Desktop Why am I suddenly getting "You've been blocked by network security" error message on reddit, but only when I try to access old reddit (AskReddit)?

More specifically, I have the subreddit AskReddit bookmarked cause that's generally my favorite to go to whenever I'm on reddit and I have it bookmarked as old reddit cause I for the most part can't stand how new reddit looks. I've had it this way for like years now but suddenly I'm getting this error message of being blocked when I click it. Oddly it doesn't show it when I just go to "old.reddit.com", it only shows the "blocked by network security" error for the old reddit AskReddit bookmarked address.

It's just weird. And for more context I always log on to the website via my laptop at home.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Update: I just noticed if I hit "reload" the page, the error goes away and I'm able to see it like normal. It only comes up when I first click on the bookmarked link. I always log into most things using incognito mode, not sure if that's triggering something now or not.

Update 6/23: Idk if anyone else is experiencing this but it just got worse for me. Instead of seeing the reddit alien wearing the hat saying, "You've been blocked..." when trying to access old reddit through a bookmark and the simple fix being to just reload the page. Now I get "woah there, pardner!". And a thing saying my request was blocked due to a network policy... when I try my usual workaround by reloading the page the same thing happens only it gives me a different code to use for contacting support. So, I tried typing in the address for new reddit and the picture I used to see with the alien wearing the hat showed up again saying I've been blocked... but reloading the page fixed it. After logging into new reddit I was able to type in old reddit in a different tab and I accessed it without issue... Idk what's going on with getting blocked while trying to access these websites, especially with old reddit. Why is old reddit having this issue more? It's almost like they just don't want us using it for some reason.

I'm going to try and keep this post updated but it may be getting close to hitting 6 months old which is when they archive posts in some subreddits. A lot of times I wish they wouldn't archive posts when they reach 6 months old cause older posts are sometimes still useful or relevant, especially if an issue comes up again.

Desktop reddit feed just changed

I remember quite a while ago going into my reddit settings and turning of suggested posts in my feed and to only show posts from communities I joined. All of a sudden, reddit feed started showing suggested posts from communities I'm not in again. I can't find the setting to turn it off. How do I change it back?

Desktop How do I disable recommended and recent subreddits in app?

I can't find a way to just get a clean feed of the subreddits I've joined. It seems to be one recommended sub, one ad, one "near you" sub, and then a post from a sub I care about, and continues in this pattern as I scroll. It's making checking the app tedious as I'm spending so much time marking everything as "show less of this".

I've only recently started using reddit again so maybe the answer is obvious but can't seem to find a solution. Thank you!

Desktop Is it just me or did Reddit just remove the ability to search a curated profile on desktop?

You used to be able to view all of the content of a curated profile by searching for a space, *, or by searching for author:username, but I tried it today and all three methods failed.

Does searching for author:StephenWelker1024 still show my comments?

Desktop Does reddit intentionally try to degrade user experience? Unable to disable 'for you' page

It really makes me believe that they sit around thinking of ways not just to monetize, but to make the users hate using the site. Why can't we opt out of this, disable it, or set "Following" to default? Because maybe they don't want us using reddit at all? I can't figure it out.

Desktop Ever since downtime a few days ago, Reddit on Safari has been unusable

Safari on Mac is very, very slow to render Reddit pages, and usually needs to be opened up in a new tab to actually load. Started after the downtime of Reddit earlier this week. PLEASE FIX THIS!

Desktop What is going on? Since Friday, Sept 4th, Reddit has been outrageously slow. It's been taking up to 10 seconds to load pages, is freezing, hanging, and generating "this page is slowing down firefox" errors (on Windows 11). I updated browser, cleared cookies/cache--makes no difference. Anyone else?

Desktop Why is Reddit sorting comment sections by 'best' then showing me comments that have ~2 upvotes before showing me comments that have thousands of upvotes?

What broken algorithm is deciding that those are the best comments? Is there a way to set every comment universally to top?

Desktop (Desktop) How to turn off "Related Communities" in your feed?

Post image
132 Upvotes

I think this started happening today, because I havent noticed before, but how do i turn off "related communities" in my feed?

![img](bz6ojkiul3kg1)

I googled some answers, but everything seems to suggest turning off recommendations in home feed, and i already have it off. So what else can I do?

Is it possible this is forced on me by the subreddit itself? because it seems only some show that. And if so, does it have to be a manual turn on by reddit owner/mods or does that happen without their knowledge?

Desktop How do I get my feed back to only showing my communities ? (desktop)

For years, my homepage used to only show posts from the communities I've joined, and now it's showing all kinds of random stuff, and I don't want that.

I also don't want to be browsing just one specific community. Like before, I want my feed to just show the communities I've joined, and nothing else. How do I do that ?

Desktop Stop Sudden Flood of Unwanted Reddit Recommendations

Lately, Reddit has been aggressively pushing its suggestion algorithm. All day long my feed is clogged with the following unwanted suggestions:

  1. Because you've shown interest in a similar topic
  2. Because you've shown interest in a similar post
  3. Because you've visited this community before
  4. Popular on Reddit right now
  5. Because you've shown interest in this community
  6. Suggested for you
  7. Similar to r/<subreddit>
  8. New community related to your interests

This has caused me to navigate to my settings and turn off all recommendations - located here:

Profile >> Settings >> Notifications >> Recommendations

A day later (I waited to just be sure) I still get all of these unwanted suggestions that have absolutely no interest for me. It's just needless algorithmic junk.

So, is there another setting that I missed - or should I plan to visit Reddit less and less?

FYI - I use my laptop to view Reddit using a browser (I don't have a Reddit app on my phone).

Desktop Getting site-breaking pop up on Reddit desktop now. Anyway to remove it?

Post image
25 Upvotes

Like a lot of people I have been getting the pop up on the mobile site trying to force users to download the app and completely breaking the site. It has specifically driven me to using Reddit purely on desktop.

Only now I'm getting a whole new site-breaking pop up on desktop.

No matter which option you click it requires an account to keep browsing Reddit.

Obviously I have an account, but I have been trying to break a serious bad habit with the amount of time I spend on here, and part of that is logging out of all my accounts.

Does this essentially disqualify anyone who just wants to browse Reddit without an account? Is there a way to remove this pop up without an account?

Desktop Full Guide: how you get animated subreddit icons and animated profile pictures!

Edit: this guide is now useless cus they patched it. This post is staying for archival purposes. Sorry bro.

Step 1: Find a GIF that represents yourself and/or your community

Step 2: go to https://ezgif.com/ change its size to 256×256 pixels, make sure that its file size is less than 500 kilobytes, and change its format to GIF to APNG. (If the APNG comes out weird on the website simply change the format of the file on your device from .gif to .png)

Step 3: Log in to Reddit using a browser (not the app, and make sure you're using the desktop site settings if you're on mobile.)

Animated subreddit icons

Step 4: While still logged in on the same browser, open old Reddit via this link https://old.reddit.com/ and go to the subreddit you moderate.

Step 5: scroll down to the sidebar of the subreddit, and you'll see a subreddit settings option, click it.

Step 6: scroll down a bit more and you'll see a "mobile look and feel" section, upload your APNG, and then remove the old sub PFP on new Reddit.

Animated profile pictures

Step 4: While still logged in on the same browser, open old Reddit and paste this link in the address bar: https://old.reddit.com/user/me/about/edit

Step 5: scroll down a bit and you'll see a "mobile look and feel" section, remove your old PFP and upload your APNG.

And viola! You've done it!

I made this post because I wasn't able to find a full guide on animated sub icons/pfps and after fully knowing how to do both I wanted to lend my knowledge to everyone, hope this helped you, and have a good day!

NOTE: Do keep in mind that the animation won't always load but it'll work in most places such as chats, on desktop, and viewing the profile/subreddit!

Desktop Clicking inbox on old reddit no longer marks all messages as read?

This has been going on for at least a week. it used to mark everything as read, now I have to click every message one by one to mark it as read or just leave the orange new message notification on. So annoying. Is this intentional or can I fix this? Getting sick of old reddit features getting gutted constantly lately

Desktop Get RID of the suggested posts feature or at least....

Or at least make it obey our preferences. All I'm doing is clicking "Show fewer posts like this" through my whole feed when I have suggested posts turned OFF. After I post this, I'm going to fix my reddit bookmark to take me only to the sub I moderate so I can ignore all of the garbage reddit is trying to foist on me.

Desktop My upvotes kept getting decreased until it fell by almost 80%

Hi, I was recently checking one of my comment on a megathread and my comment kept getting more upvotes (close to a 50% conversion ratio of views and upvotes). I was suspicious because of it but then the upvote stayed at 30 and it kept staying at 30 for an hour or two. But after that, the upvotes kept getting disappearing one by one and now the final count stays at 6. I checked the upvote percentage and it was 100% on 30 votes and its still 100%. There weren't any visible bot comment farming in megathread as everyone had sort of 1 or 2 upvotes (comments that were either before or after me). I also checked my upvotes with an incognito window (desktop) and with another mobile and acc and it was all showing 30 and now its 6. Is there any reason for this drastic decrease in upvotes

Desktop Literally 9/10 of my feed is now suggested posts

Post image
51 Upvotes

Sorry to complain, but besides just being annoying there are medical issues this could seriously screw with if it suggests and shows me the wrong post and my fee is now literally less than half posts from subreddits I have joined and purposely only view my feed and stay off popular or anything to prevent medical issues that being in the subs I am in can help me a bit and can communicate with others with the same issues or people with same interests, but today reddit started forcing so much BS when I know what subs I want to be in. All this is doing is making me consider not using reddit. I was going to post 2 images of my feed with the 2nd being 3 out of 4 posts being suggested to show how bad it is, but can only post one.

Is there any way to change it to actually only be showing content from subs I have subbed to? I don't see anything in settings that will help.

Desktop What's the deal with "unable to leave the room"?

Some random bot or spammer asks to chat with you. Then you try to ignore the request and you can't it just says "unable to leave the room" as an error message. This happens all the time. How to deal with it?
