Desktop Getting site-breaking pop up on Reddit desktop now. Anyway to remove it?

Post image

Like a lot of people I have been getting the pop up on the mobile site trying to force users to download the app and completely breaking the site. It has specifically driven me to using Reddit purely on desktop.

Only now I'm getting a whole new site-breaking pop up on desktop.

No matter which option you click it requires an account to keep browsing Reddit.

Obviously I have an account, but I have been trying to break a serious bad habit with the amount of time I spend on here, and part of that is logging out of all my accounts.

Does this essentially disqualify anyone who just wants to browse Reddit without an account? Is there a way to remove this pop up without an account?

Just because I'm trying to use Reddit less doesn't mean I don't want to use Reddit at all.

Depends on what browser that you’re using on your mobile phone, but some come with settings where you can disable pop-ups. Due to some of the age ban requirements for social media that are coming down the pipeline in other countries we’re going to see more of this.

The USA has COPPA which prohibits websites and online services from knowingly collecting personal data from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent, which prompted standard industry terms setting the minimum age at 13 many years ago.

I’m a social media professional, so this is definitely in my wheelhouse. And I’ve been doing this since it was called digital PR.

OP is very clear that this is on desktop. It's happening to me when not logged in too.

1

u/blondie956 2 Jul 24 '26

The same also applies to desktop. Reddit is a social media platform and it’s easier to push code across an entire platform to comply with global law versus doing it based on IP as VPN access is all to common to try and skirt the laws.

2

u/greatcum Jul 25 '26

And? Sorry but you haven't addressed OP's point. Creating an account in no way verifies age, and you're incorrect about popup blockers since they do not work with Reddit's site. You've tried to answer a question that you don't know the answer to, which is completely unhelpful.

1

u/cgoelkel Jul 27 '26

When you create an account they ask for your birthday. That’s all the verification they need. Even if you lie about it they can still point to it and say that YOU told them you were x age and it’s not their fault if it turns out you’re not.

1

u/greatcum Aug 18 '26

Exactly. You've just typed it out and you clearly don't understand, so I'll explain.

blondie stated that this is happening "to comply with global law" (there's no such thing but let's pretend there is). This isn't complying with any law because it doesn't actually verify age. Unlike sites working under the "Online Safety Act" in the UK which requires actual age verification via official ID.
Under that law it absolutely IS reddit's fault that you told them you were x age and they didn't verify it.

Especially while at work, Reddit can be a great source of obscure answers that are actually what you needed.

It's possible it could be disabled via uBlock Origin, but some detective work might be necessary. If someone figures it out, share it please.

An extension to hide elements might work. I've heard Chrome has that feature built in, but it didn't sound like it was just clicking a button.

Here's what's working for me currently, under UBlock setting, pasted into the My Filters box. No warranties expressed or implied!

! Remove the central login and 18+ age-wall modals

www.reddit.com###blocking-modal:remove()

! Remove bottom banner pop-ups and prompts

www.reddit.com##.rpl-bottom-sheet

! Remove the scroll-lock class from the page body so you can scroll

www.reddit.com##+js(rc, scroll-is-blocked, body, stay)

! Unlock scrolling 2: Electic Boogaloo

www.reddit.com##+js(prevent-addEventListener, touchmove)

! Once more, with feeling

www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock, html, stay)

www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock, body, stay)

! Block the pop up itself

Works perfectly for me with these backslashes added:

www.reddit.com##.p-lg.justify-center.items-center.flex-col.w-1\/2.flex

--------------------------------------------------------------------^

www.reddit.com##.w-\[720px\].min-h-\[480px\].flex

------------------------^------^---------^------^
UBlock said invalid filter without them. Thanks!

Thanks.

Browser differences between you and the authors browser? 🤷‍♂️

1

u/TopLand26 Aug 03 '26

how do you remove intrusive banners from the comments ?

1

u/midlifecrisishotline Aug 11 '26

the backslash works for me but how do i get the scroll lock filter to work? the above filters didnt work. only yours did. thanks!

1

u/5DR-S54 Aug 11 '26

If the problem is that it says invalid filter, what I did to find the two I posted was use the element picker and find the same elements from the og filter list, which on my browser or whatever (Firefox, Windows) had those backslashes.

You can probably look up each filter that's giving you problems and find some variation of them that might work for you, like these I just found:

www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, html, stay)
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, body, stay)

1

u/Lazy-Narwhal-5457 10 Aug 12 '26

Well, I'm on iOS, Safari & almost every browser is severely hobbled, so my ability to check anything is close to nil.

I got the same errors; your suggestions worked for me as well!

Here's Conan766 filters list with 5DR-S54's adjustments if anyone else wants to give it a go:

Congratulations, after suggesting multiple times that UBlock might be the solution to certain pesky problems (for someone brighter than I), you are the one that actually worked it out.

Reaching out to Gorhill and/or stashing on Github might be appropriate. r/Privacy might have interest as well.

I added this after the above script and was able to get it to work again(looks like they updated something):

www.reddit.com##rpl-modal-card:remove()

I've used these Conan776's rules to prevent scroll lock/freeze:

! Remove the scroll-lock class from the page body so you can scroll
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, scroll-is-blocked, body, stay)

! Once more, with feeling
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock, html, stay)
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock, body, stay)

In fact, in a shortened form – with the first one combined with the other two, as advised by TrumpetsInMyAss in another thread, so the total set of the rules was:

www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, html, stay)
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, body, stay)

But for me an additional one to the two scroll-freeze-prevention rules was needed:

www.reddit.com#$#html, body, shreddit-app { overflow-y: scroll !important; -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch !important; touch-action: pan-y !important; overscroll-behavior: auto !important; }

, advised by u/BusterCrystal in the thread Reddit seems to be blocking mobile web now .

However, I now think that just another Conan776's rule might have sufficed (I saw it only later), so one might try it instead if prefer:

! Unlock scrolling 2: Electic Boogaloo
www.reddit.com##+js(prevent-addEventListener, touchmove)

And I also used, to prevent the August 2026 "Get the Reddit App" banner, Conan776's banner blocking rule (rpl-bottom-sheet), in a bit longer form:

www.reddit.com##.configured-xpromo-bottom-sheet.configured-xpromo.rpl-bottom-sheet

So my total list of rules for preventing the August 2026 "Get the Reddit App" banner was/is this (I entered them simply one by one into uBlock Origin Lite on mobile):

www.reddit.com##.configured-xpromo-bottom-sheet.configured-xpromo.rpl-bottom-sheet
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, html, stay)
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, body, stay)
www.reddit.com#$#html, body, shreddit-app { overflow-y: scroll !important; -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch !important; touch-action: pan-y !important; overscroll-behavior: auto !important; }

(Edit: Expanded the comment to be clearer and fuller).

1

u/_musesan_ Sep 05 '26

I added those two and yours and it's not working for me unfortunately. Will paste it all down here for someone else to try:

www.reddit.com##.igured-xpromo-bottom-sheet.configured-xpromo.rpl-bottom-sheet
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, html, stay)
www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, body, stay)

www.reddit.com#$#html, body, shreddit-app { overflow-y: scroll !important; -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch !important; touch-action: pan-y !important; overscroll-behavior: auto !important; }

1

u/The_value_is_people Sep 12 '26
  1. That's the exact set that helped me get rid of that banner. But isn't there a typo in your first row? "igured".
  2. Are you speaking about the banner "Editors' Choice ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Get the app to keep using Reddit. Search better, personalize your feed, and never miss an update on your favorite communities. Get the Reddit App" (with no cross or slide handle to close it, a screenshot is available in another comment of that same thread I've linked to above)? If not, the rules might need adjustments. For example, Reddit has recently started showing me another banner at the bottom, this one is of much less height and is hideable. This set of rules doesn't hide it (but being an easily manually hideable one it's of much less bother).

2

u/gridtunnel Jul 27 '26

It's called a "lightbox." Your reasoning for not logging in is sound. I predict Reddit will lose ad revenue because of this move.

1

u/StoicFable Jul 28 '26

I would imagine they are still making plenty off of selling user data though.

1

u/gridtunnel Jul 28 '26

At the same time, user data can be spoofed.

This has nothing to do with bots. Someone who is not logged in cannot interact with the site in any way.

1

u/Key-Tumbleweed3799 Aug 17 '26

I think it's more about bots that scrape data. Which they can still do, behind the login popup the data is still visible, it only prevents normal users from using reddit. LMAO

1

u/greatcum Aug 18 '26

Exactly.

1

u/BigCSFan Aug 20 '26

You can still scrape data with a bot. The pop up doesnt stop that whatsoever.

Its literally just to block people from scrolling without an account

1

u/Key-Tumbleweed3799 Aug 20 '26

said the same thing differently

1

u/ddxcb Jul 26 '26

I found it funny that it started to popup once they killed old.reddit, like they are trying to annoy people...

1

u/Trumpizap3d040987 Jul 27 '26

I'll just make lots of burner accounts. GFYS Reddit and the internet

2

u/cgoelkel Jul 27 '26

The whole point is to make you create an account so I don’t think they will mind you making multiple to have burners.

1

u/Trumpizap3d040987 Jul 28 '26

VPN and fake emails and all I do is troll. goodluck with that data

1

u/Few-Nebula-6546 Aug 16 '26

That still wouldn’t make your data useless. Just from the four comments on your account, you can already see an interest in tech and privacy. Combine that with browsing and interaction data and compare it with similar users, and there’s still plenty there to build a useful behavioral profile.

Burner accounts also don’t fundamentally change how you behave. The data doesn’t have to be tied to you personally to be valuable. It would still reinforce their datasaet that users who act one way tend to react a certain way. Reddit would still see that users with a similar profile to you have an inclination to trolling ;) Then it can serve you tech-related ragebait headlines to keep you engaged with their platform. It's all very insiduous. The age laws are just a convenient excuse.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '26

Logged in to help out with a possible solution. Similar to the mobile popups, it seems to be targeted at users who visit the site frequently. Switching to Incognito or clearing site cookies seems to keep the popup from appearing.

They don't want to bully and harass potential new users, but if they know you use the site often they can twist your arm until you create an account (so they can then curate a profile of your entire browsing history and sell it to a data broker for marketing purposes, similar to how grocery stores give you a "free" rewards membership so long as you tie all of your purchases to a centralized log for easy harvesting).

1

u/-2qt Jul 28 '26

I have that too and it's driving me up the wall.

You could do what I did:

  • create a fresh account
  • subscribe to at least 3 extremely low volume subreddits. I use /r/BearJokes, /r/WatchPaintDry, and... idk, I forget which other one
  • deactivate any weird features like posts from your area and "recommended" communities and whatnot

Now you should have a completely empty home feed! Mine just says there's no content to display. I can still read posts when I need to, though.

1

u/prid13 Aug 19 '26

thank God i almost exclusively use AI now 😇 this will sadly just make me want to visit reddit even less (while in incognito)

1

u/AromaticProperty1107 Aug 20 '26

It will only pop up if you log out of reddit  or clear your cached data. The popup won't let you log in on the regular site anymore, a way to force peopleto get the app. But, If you goto old.reddit.com you can log in there and the current reddit sites will register that you are logged in and yay no more popup.
