Desktop How do I disable recommended and recent subreddits in app?
I can't find a way to just get a clean feed of the subreddits I've joined. It seems to be one recommended sub, one ad, one "near you" sub, and then a post from a sub I care about, and continues in this pattern as I scroll. It's making checking the app tedious as I'm spending so much time marking everything as "show less of this".
I've only recently started using reddit again so maybe the answer is obvious but can't seem to find a solution. Thank you!

Reddit is full of cringe subredits with stupid posts. I don't want them. I just want my animal subs and some of my hobbies. This is such a dumb decision.

u/Silly_Mongoose_Dance Jun 23 '26
They removed the option? 😮💨 I was literally searching to see an answer because I thought i was going crazy having to get rid of all the "recommended" subreddits for me, like I'm incapable of finding and joining a sub on my own. Thanks reddit. Guess I won't be using reddit for a while.

It's been really bad the last few days

u/J0t4-1690 Jun 29 '26
I thought it was just me, or maybe I screwed up some settings stuff. It's horrible what's going on, but I'm glad I'm not alone in this whole mess 😅

There's another comment that says it, but I didn't see it. They now have tabs at the top of the feed. For you and following. Following is apparently what we're looking for.

thanks for this-- I somehow forgot this option exists.
now I wish there was a way to set my sorting to "new" permanently so that I dont have to manually change it every time I check the feed.

u/asipofcream 15d ago
bump
they suddenly changed this
awful for them to move it and make it look like twitter suddenly...

Just figured this out, we’ll see how long this stays true:
If you have a curated feed, aka you have a LOT of favorites and jsut want to see stuff from those, switch ti the “latest” feed and it’ll stick to stuff you’re subbed to

u/Possible_Rhubarb 14d ago
Thank you so much, I was at risk of getting RSI from individually marking posts as "show fewer posts like this". I realised that it was like cleaning a beach, one grain of sand at a time.

Well duh how else are they going to keep pushing weirdo subreddits full of incels and right-wing propaganda your feed?
Place has gone full mask off on letting botfarms push their weird propaganda over the last few months.

I disabled recommended subs a couple of years ago, then in the last few hours I’m getting recommended subs in my feed and I don’t see the option in settings any more.
3
u/JohnyFakenspea 17d ago
What's weird is this just happened to me today a full month after yall.
3
u/berbunny 17d ago
Same here. All of a sudden like 20-30 percent of posts have a "join" button because they're from a sub I'm not on.
2
u/Cphelps85 16d ago
Just noticed it the other day on my end as well, I'm pretty sure I had to disable it once before and now it's back with no option to disable.
1
u/Icy-Bed9897 16d ago
same, and im getting all sorts of posts i try to avoid.
these apps are ragebaiting us on purpose.

u/allmyfriendsaregone 13d ago
Yeah same. I have no interest in being suggested any subreddits... Removing that option to only see subs you're following is just... Evil.
1
u/Deletesoonbye 8d ago
This jist happened to me too. I’m seeing “suggested communities” of random subreddits I’ve never heard of.
2
u/DavidHogins Sep 02 '26
Yeah, same as me.
I simply stopped using reddit for a whole month and it came back to normal, thankfully

Tbh I'm just gunna go through the effort of getting my preferred third party app running again. The 10 minutes of fiddling is worth it at this point.
1
u/genteelkink Jun 23 '26
Any recommendations? I'm tired of reddits BS decisions, but i like the community
3
u/Unprovocative Jun 23 '26
I don't know how pissy admins get about people going into details, so I'll just say that people with Android phones should look into ReVanced and DM you with a bit more specifics

I know this is a couple months old but can you DM me with the details?
1
u/UKNZ0 Sep 03 '26
Same here, if anyone has an explanation of how to do this that's easy to follow, I'd love to hear it
5
u/FeeImmediate Aug 18 '26
Im late to the game here but I found that you can create a custom feed at the bottom of your joined communities list in the sidebar on mobile. This lets you make feeds for specific communities and not get recommended random stuff

u/Dandywhatsoever Jun 23 '26
I am downvoting all the recommended posts I come across but it's exhausting.
3
u/TheSevenDots Jun 25 '26
It keeps suggesting ragebait stuff to me that just makes me upset or mad. Just like Facebook and Twitter now.
1
u/Alucard-VS-Artorias Jul 07 '26
It's been so terrible lately I'm really considering just deleting my account at this point.

Specially during fifa World Cup, so much hate and arguments, I am tired.
3
u/Johnl317 Jun 29 '26
The recommended subreddits is ridiculously excessive, driving me crazy.
2
u/Top-Wolverine-8684 Jul 01 '26
I only started getting this a couple of weeks ago. Now over 90% of my feed is recommended subreddits, and I'm giving up on coming to the app altogether since it's only showing me garbage I don't have interest in.
3
u/Seraguith 15d ago
Holy moly. 95% of the posts on the home feed come from subs I haven't even joined. It's annoying and I can't turn it off.
2
u/ButterDoggirl Jun 25 '26
idk if its the same update, but i see 2 tabs at the top now. one "for you" thats full of recommended subs, and "following" which just shows followed subs.
1
2
u/mrf1uffybutt Jun 28 '26
While the setting was removed, there is now a "For you" and a "Following" tab at the top of your home feed. "For you" is stuff you are following and posts/communities they think you will like while "Following" is only stuff you have followed (as it used to be)
2
2
u/WittySteps Sep 08 '26
That's the issue, it is not. I am not following any political stuff but it keeps showing me that and other unrelated topics.
I have marked so many posts as uninterested but still similar stuff keeps popping up. I want to discover new content but only related to things I am interested in

u/TheSpookyPineapple Jun 29 '26
and muting them does not work anymore either
3
u/DavidHogins Jun 29 '26
On cellphone they reverted this stupid change (by spam muting), but not on pc unfortunately.
So i dont really use reddit on pc anymore
2
u/TheSpookyPineapple Jun 29 '26
I'm on mobile and it does not work, I've muted a subreddit that is being forced on me about 6 times, still shows up
2
u/North-Razzmatazz-481 Jul 14 '26
I wound up just disabling Reddit notifications on my phone it was so irritating. Yes they were delivered silently but I didn’t care for the majority of the recommendations.
2
u/Forsaken-Gas-8573 Aug 22 '26
I wanted to buy a handheld PC, but not anymore. Now Reddit keeps pushing me to buy one by recommending related posts. That's crazy 😭

u/Potential-Client-442 Sep 13 '26
3 months late, facing the same issue. I set the location thingy from approximate IP to nowhere, and for the past five minutes, have only seen subreddits I follow. So maybe I won?
2
u/Calm_Pie1791 Sep 14 '26
Looks like they dropped this feature. Looks like im done with reddit, these recommendations are so bad for my mental health, I smell a class action lawsuit around addiction.

Go to your profile.
If on mobile, tap the three bars in the top right corner and go to your settings (probably something similar for desktop).
Under general, go to account settings for "your username".
Find the "Privacy" section and uncheck "show recommendations in home feed"
Refresh your home feed/restart app.

I literally do not see subreddits im subscribed to in my HOME page its actually crazy
1
u/AppropriatePirate178 Jun 28 '26
Oh and I get a mere share, this is simple enough to find accidentally

Just landed here looking into the same issue. I found that the account settings has a ton of toggles you can disable, plus there is a location based recommendation that you can change. Just did this, it seems better so far.
1
u/GOST_5284-84 Sep 15 '26
Figured out a solution. Get Ublock, use the ublock picker function to nuke the "For You" Tab at the top of your feed.
1
u/Derateo Sep 15 '26
to disable it you need to go to https://old.reddit.com/prefs/ and deselect the option “show trending subreddits on the home feed”
i know im necro at this point but hope it helps someone

u/Livid_Number_ 11 Jun 22 '26
You can just see the subreddits you have joined in your home feed if you turn off the “recommended by Reddit” subs. Go to profile, then Settings, then Account Settings. Find “Show Recommendations in Home Feed” and turn that off (I’m on iOS app so your steps may vary).
8
u/DavidHogins Jun 23 '26
Yeah they removed that.
Reddit wants to be the new twitter apparently

u/Livid_Number_ 11 Jun 23 '26
How do you access Reddit? It still appears as an option on mobile app in account settings.

Android or iOS?
Edit to add: I’m on the latest update iOS and still have the option per my screenshot. Just wondering since I help in multiple new user subreddits and any info will help me keep up to date with the changes between Android, iOS, desktop and web browser.
2
u/Healthy_Intention_92 Jun 23 '26
Android. It disappeared with the most recent app update.
1
u/Livid_Number_ 11 Jun 23 '26
Thanks for the info!
3
u/Healthy_Intention_92 Jun 23 '26
Apparently they're testing out a new "feature" on some of us, which is new tabs on the home screen- "for you" and "my feed"; the "for you" being a list of recommended feeds that appear first when opening the app.

u/DavidHogins Jun 24 '26
Brave on phone and Brave on PC.
On phone it is working as intended
1
u/Livid_Number_ 11 Jun 24 '26
Here’s a recent discussion about some changes they made (I don’t have access to a desktop). Check your feed and see if it’s on the new “for you” tab: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddithelp/s/p6DXZU9xYv
2
u/DavidHogins Jun 24 '26
Not useful unfortunately, guy just recommend people to use "Following"
Problem is, "For You" is default, and it spoiled me of a series finale, of a sub that i never interacted with, first thread in the page.
2
u/Sal_1980 Jun 26 '26
This is the part that gets me the most. We need the option to select "following" as the default feed.
3
u/TheOtherFarSide Jun 23 '26
Looks like that setting is removed now.

u/Livid_Number_ 11 Jun 23 '26
Only for the Android users that are part of the “experiment”

On the desktop go to your settings > preferences and look for the content section, you’ll see a setting called “show recommendations in home feed” turn that off.
5
u/DavidHogins Jun 22 '26
It doesnt exist anymore
1
u/Old_One_I Expert Helper Jun 22 '26
Do you have the for you and following tabs?
3
u/DavidHogins Jun 22 '26
I do, but it is always empty as a wasteland, despite following some subs that are quite active.
It will usally just show a few posts, lets say 10 and then end it there
2
u/HumanAgony865 Jun 23 '26
I don't see rhe setting anymore either even though I've seen it before. I think they replaced it with the "following" tab
