Updated rules for r/Hobart

Hi All,

We've updated the rules for r/Hobart after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

  • Added doxxing to Rule about no illegal content;
  • Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
  • Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);
  • Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

Living in Kingston Beach

From my few times visiting there, Kingston Beach looks pretty liveable. Walkable, a few shops and cafes, pub, the beach right there.

The couple of downsides I can see are:

  • it gets busy on weekends and in summer,
  • there's no convenience store and the closest supermarket is a couple of km away in Kingston

What am I not seeing? What is the commute into the city like - driving, public transport, cycling? There seems to be quite a mix of housing. What's the demographic and, I don't know, general vibe?

UTAS Hobart appartments

hey. I am hoping to get a studio in the UTAS Hobart Apartments, or if not, Hytten. I will be a second year UTAS student as I spend my first year at Jane college. I’ve already applied.

im wondering if I’m disadvantaged as I am not a new or returning resident, and is it hard to get a studio at either? secondly, is it hard to get a car park permit? I applied for one on my application.

I have a place at Jane next year just in case but super keen to leave as I need my own space. and Jane isn’t idea tbh

Who would have guessed?

Congratulations to all the people who thought this money-pit was a good idea. Thanks for the endless debt this state will endure.

A special shout out to Chuq for deleting comments that make him uncomfortable.

I was walking up Amy St in Moonah today and I saw this in a front yard. Any thoughts as to where it came from? We think it's just standard Tasmanian DMR but it might not be.

HTF is a COVER BAND charging $122 a ticket?

Many great original Australian and even international bands have run through the Odeon over the years for $60-90. I find this just offensive and blood boiling to the core. WTAF? How can this band sleep at night?

An open letter to Ryan Posselt. The Wannabe Mamdani, an illustration in failure.

Good afternoon Ryan

People are deeply frustrated with local delivery failures for the real bread and butter of council. Our rates sit higher than any other metropolitan area, CBD vacancies are climbing at an alarming rate. Infrastructure and maintenance are falling behind, and we sit at the precipice of demographic decline and growing irrelevance compared to the councils around us.

I'm in Mount Nelson, perennially neglected to the point where I'd honestly rather we seceded to Kingborough. Our street lighting is constantly inadequate and deficient compared to topographically similar areas in Glenorchy (I can't say your light dimming idea won much favour here). Our "footpaths", which are mostly either non-existent or bitumen spillover which is nigh indistinguishable from road, haven't been updated since the Olympic torch came through over 25 years ago.

The only substantive improvements to our area have come from private enterprise, council have done bugger all. The doctors, store, dentists, the new pharmacy, Hell even any new footpaths we might have have come about from new housing developments. That's not inherently a bad thing, but the differences between the new privately developed areas and the old council maintained parts are stark.

Forgive me, but at the start of this campaign, I envisaged putting you towards the top of my ticket. You can probably tell from my profile picture that I'm very sympathetic towards Labor. However, not only have you got into the mud with the disgusting far right pigs on our council, you've come out of it with a snout of your own.

You promised a comprehensive policy focus on housing, and yet you've spent all of your airtime this campaign away from that, and instead focusing on niche and frankly weird issues that are all CBD obsessed, to the point I wonder if you forgot the vast majority of us don't actually live there, and have communities of our own that you'd be just as responsible for as our Lord Mayor. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if more people lived on Nelson Rd than Collins St. I know you have your policies on the big bread and butter issues, but you never champion them when you can find some mindless thought bubble to parrot instead.

And then there's the never-ending rejections and humiliations. The council right, city officials, Bridget Archer, *your own parents*! As a Labor voter I generally want someone more pragmatic and grounded than the Greens, more people focused than the Liberals, and less elitist than both. Instead, you spend a huge quantity of your time elite virtue signalling with your grand CBD objectives and your antics like reading poetry in response to the Bondi shooting, and the Socialist candidate, to his very legitimate credit, has been far, far more grounded than you.

It all feels very despondent. You were supposed to offer something very different, something hopeful. The Greens who've hitherto dominated council look tired and jaded, worn down by their ineffectual opposition to public sector cuts at the state level and by scandal both locally and Federally. The council right have become dominated by their chudded up hard right wing, same as is happening across the country.

And here you were at one point as the only alternative. Now? Congratulations, you've made it so the only realistic choices are now some old bloke who has been there forever, another old bloke who has been there forever but is a Green, and Louise Bloomfield, a leftover remnant of the moderate and pragmatic centre right.

I'm viscerally disappointed in you; the other Labor candidates have been fantastic in my opinion, but you having the highest profile has gone a long way to ruining things. I know you'll be unfortunately reelected; your seat really should go to Wallace or Bari, but name recognition trumps all. Next time, please think on your mistakes from this time, stay above the constant petty spats, and bring a program that focuses on where people live, rather than just creating more amenities and boondoggles to be enjoyed by people who don't live here!

Next time, please take a good hard look at yourself and consider whether you really have lived up to your idol, Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, unlike you, is laser focused on local issues. Potholes, rents, budget management, housing supply. That's what he's focused on, with the occasional foray into government run supermarkets and condemning (rightly) Netanyahu. All politicians have an ego, but the good ones go into bat for those they claim to represent, and in that respect, even Louise Elliot does a far better job than you, it's just that she goes into bat for the landlord class.

Your constituency isn't supposed to be the well to do old luvvies and former hippies with million dollar plus paid off houses. It's supposed to be workers and the young struggling to get a foothold to climb up and improve their lives, and the older people who didn't win the property lottery, the same as Mamdani. They can't afford rent, they're buried in negative equity on an overpriced house, groceries and bills creep ever upward, and infrastructure fails around them as a pervasive miasma of dealing blankets the city. This campaign, in a vain attempt to get attention for yourself, you've let all of them, all of us, down.

Next time, do better.

Regards, a disgusted, disheartened voter.

Advice for home gym gear, half power rack

Hey guys,

I’m after anyone in Tassie/Aus that could help recommend me a few pieces of gear to set up home gym.
I’m in Tasmania.
I’m looking at a half power rack or bar bell stand, mainly for incline press/squat/ohp, one that can hold a normal 20kg bar, I have a lot or space under my house so size shouldn’t be a problem, I’m buying a set of those 23kg each hand db with the ability to twist and do different weight and an incline bench.

Any help would be great, some of the gear doesn’t seem to expensive but can’t tell if it’s worthless or will be shaky/break/fall over, to someone who lifts, been in gyms for the past 20yrs but just moved, the gym near me is small and useless and just want to cut down driving time and hit it downstairs after work.

Any advice on what you’ve bought, photos even that you can vouch for would be amazing.
If you have something feel free to message me link or photos.
Thank you.

Hobart hiking group recommendations

Hi everyone!

I'm keen to get out hiking and bushwalking more regularly around Hobart and across Tasmania, and would love to meet some like-minded people along the way (Woman early 30s).

Does anyone have recommendations for friendly hiking or bushwalking groups that organise regular walks? Ideally a mix of day hikes and perhaps some longer or more adventurous

Thanks!

Hobart party venue

Any recommendations on a party venue in Hobart? I want to host my husband’s 50th. His friends and family will be coming from interstate, so I want the venue to be beautiful. Maybe the waterfront or somewhere not too far from town + accommodation. I want to have a bar, somewhere I can organise catering, and I have a DJ. Any ideas? 🙏

Ambulance Tasmania staff based at the Brisbane/Melville St offices - have you experienced anything paranormal on site?

Ambulance Tasmania's State HQ and Hobart depot is built on what was previously the Convict Barracks and later HM Gaol Hobart before it was demolished in the early 1960s.

We've heard a few stories of supernatural occurrences throughout the current buildings but would love to hear more!

Feel free to DM if you don't want to post publicly.

Thanks!

Is a mandatory % fee on all meals, every day, no matter the type of payment legal?

Post image
41 Upvotes

Doesn't this contravene the law, or am I misunderstanding something?

For clarity, the image says "A 1.2% hospitality service charge applies to all accounts. This charge contributes towards the costs associated with providing our hospitality services."

There's also a 10% surcharge but that's explicitly only for Sundays and public holidays, and that's in line with guidelines. However, the 1.2% charge applies every day, to all payment methods, and my understanding is that is not permissible.

It's supposed to a be a beautiful, warm, blue sky weekend. Hobart at its best!

What's the best thing to do in Hobart and surrounds when the weather is great?

I'm thinking maybe a drive up the east coast with my family, but would love to hear other suggestions!

Anna Reynolds warns of “significant threat to the economy” of Hobart city

The irony here is off the charts.

Between Rocky sacking staff for the stadium and Anna's subtle "no entry" signs around the city, we might as well just make Eastlands the new CBD and reserve the old one for the hospital and car yards.

Hobart is the wettest capital city in Australia

I often hear the argument that Hobart is the driest capital city in Australia, but I never felt that was right.

So, I did some research.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Hobart is actually the wettest (edit: has the highest frequency of rainy days)!

Hobart gets measurable rain on roughly 44% of days, yet comparatively little rain accumulates over the year.

It's often light showers or drizzle rather the substantial downpours that Brisbane and Sydney receive.

We have the most wet days with any recordable rain (over 0.2mm) (edit: but despite having the most wet days by a fair margin, we can't, apparently, claim the title of wettest).

Most rainy days per year:

  1. Hobart – 160 days
  2. Melbourne – 151 days
  3. Sydney – 143 days
  4. Adelaide – 121 days
  5. Brisbane – 118 days
  6. Darwin – 113 days
  7. Perth – 108 days
  8. Canberra – 106 days

Wettest by total:

  1. Darwin – 1,723 mm
  2. Sydney – 1,213 mm
  3. Brisbane – 1,149 mm
  4. Perth – 731 mm
  5. Melbourne – 648 mm
  6. Canberra – 615 mm
  7. Hobart – 612 mm
  8. Adelaide – 527 mm

So, Hobart: 1st for rainy days, but 7th for total rainfall.

And yes, I am bored today, because it is drizzling outside (but not raining!)

EDIT: After apparently causing a stir among the pedantic wordsmiths, I've replaced the word "wettest" with the more meteorlogically precise "highest frequency of rainy days".

My apologies to those who found the original terminology so deeply distressing.
