Asian babies look way older and younger at the same time. You never know what age they are just like their grandmas and mothers.

I have a photo of my mom and her two best friends in their 20s and they all look the same now. My mom is now in her 40s.

The dexterity is what is bothering me. A baby of this apparent age still flails and mashes things around. But this kid can somehow hold one piece to the side while slotting the other one below. Not buying it.
180
u/OrigamiMarie Aug 12 '26
Same here, they succeed at every grab attempt, and they go the right direction almost all the time. And the baby doesn't squirm or lean in the direction that they're trying to move stuff.
100
u/borgenhaust Aug 13 '26
It's because this video is the 4875th attempt. This child has done nothing but eat, sleep and this puzzle since birth, all under the watchful eye of the camera.

If it matters at all, since moving to Japan I am constantly misjudging the age of kids here because of how dang tiny they are. I still can't get over the fact that a little human is walking by themselves that I would consider can't hold their head up themselves size back home.
20
u/peritonlogon Aug 13 '26
I think the baby is older than people think. More like 2. My daughter was hyper focused on puzzles around 2 and could do some impressive stuff, not because she's a super genius (I mean, I think she is) but because she would obsess over them until they became very easy. At 18-24 months she would do this Melissa and Doug animal alphabet puzzle for hours every day, and before she was 2 she knew all the letters, their order, and an animal that started with each letter, all because she probably spent over 200 hours on this one puzzle. Now that she's 3.5 and that puzzle was half a lifetime ago, and her alphabet knowledge seems to have some gaps.

Based on the hand movement, I think this could be a 2-3 year-old that just looks young due to the lack of hair. It's more believable that way

u/Ghosts_of_the_maze Aug 12 '26
The hands don’t look right to me. They’re really twitchy. Like frames were taken out of a video. They look like they’re moving faster than the rest of the baby

I think that this is a totally normal video and this child is just older than people think. Some kids don't grow hair right away and it severely affects how old a child looks. If this kid is 6 months old, wow, unbelievable. If this child is almost 2, this is just perfectly ordinary.

Indeed those movements look very off. Especially when they 'drop' one.
One possibility: The video is real, but it started solved and they're playing it backwards.

If they played it backwards, the dropped pieces wouldn't fall down. I don't think it's real, but it's not just reversed either.

But it's not like babies/toddlers/kids don't sometimes reach developmental milestones sooner than is typical, my cousin's kid started reading entire story books at 2 which obviously is way earlier than usual, but they don't all follow the exact same timeline for developmental skills.
Then there's my brother with autism who didn't speak at all until almost 3, and then all at once started talking in complete grammatically correct sentences - so didn't follow the usual timeline, then skipped usual developmental stages for speech (single words, then sentences with syntax errors).

19
u/pricision Aug 12 '26
It's possible she looks younger than she is, but have you seen videos of some toddlers eating with chopsticks and Rock climbing? Most toddlers have the coordination of a potato but I believe this is real
6
u/Amidormi Aug 12 '26
My sister adopted a baby boy who was walking around at something like 7 months old, who I told 'you're going to be a rocket scientist aren't you?' when he walked over to me and smiled like he knew what I was saying. Some kids are INSANE.
3
u/SilvRS Aug 12 '26
My kid also walked extremely early, but this is completely different. The cognition required, and the fine motor control both, are associated with toddlers, not babies. Babies literally take months to work out that if you drop something, it falls. Because their brains aren't ready to make connections between cause and effect.
This kid is either older than they look, or the video's edited/not real.

I once played a prank on my parents by forcing my 3 year old sister to read the same picture book with me over and over and over again until she could memorize what words were on what pages. Then I sent her into the living room to read the book to our parents. They were so impressed until we both started laughing and revealed she had no idea what the words on the pages were.
I agree that this toddler has probably done this activity a ridiculous amount of times and probably does not fully understand how to solve the puzzle.

If you pointed at the words as you read them to her, you would have just genuinely been teaching her how to read :) Kids will first memorize specific lines and stories and then later associate and generalize it.
