A succulent Chinese meal
43
u/pete_68 Aug 31 '26
He's enjoying TF out of that and it's making me hungry.
It reminds me of the time I was 19 and backpacking through Europe. I was about to order at this little restaurant in Paris trying to decide if I was going to man up and do the escargot or not. I noticed this guy at another table eating it and he looked like he was in heaven and I was sold. I got them and they were absolutely amazing! So much butter and garlic and the bread...
I love seeing people enjoying food like that.

That was one of the best things I tried when we first travelled to France too back in middle school for an international student ambassador program. Everyone in our group had the exact same experience,….scared to try it, but as soon as it came to the table it was all eaten up in under a minute. Garlicy pesto goodness!! They’re wasn’t a weird texture or anything!! I was pleasantly surprised. I would try it again if I ever get the chance to travel back. Honestly the frog legs were so disappointing. Tasted like very bland chicken…..ugh.

Why would you film some random person eating in a restaurant? That’s something a sick person would do.

Its literally staged scripted content.
The post was shared a couple of days ago too and the guy eating is a content creator, and is mimicking how people often eat in anime. Nothing random about this.
26
u/I_Ponders Aug 31 '26
Even the mundane is staged now…
Life is fake.

Which is so fucking stupid... i grew up in a chinese household and this is just how you eat... the small bowl gets rice in the bottom usually... then you pick and choose what to eat and place it on top... then you hold the bowl near your mouth and eat... how else would you use chopsticks for rice?... one at a time??!... ffs people go touch grass

u/YourUncleBuck Aug 31 '26
It's the weird quick stilted motions that people are finding odd. That's not how normal people eat, that's how spiders eat.

Im guessing this is in China, filmed by some chinese person who's never seen a foreigner and he's thinking "wow a foreigner! eating chinese food! and using chopsticks like a pro!"
37
92
u/LookAtMyUnderbite Aug 31 '26
In China it’s referred to just food lol
6
12
u/corgi-king Aug 31 '26
Actually Chinese love to see foreigners enjoying Chinese stuff. There is no cultural appropriation shit in China or Asia for that matter.
4
u/clintj1975 Aug 31 '26
Judging from how popular videos of World Cup visitors trying things like Texas BBQ were, it's not exclusive to China.
2
u/Ecstatic-Island-9778 Sep 01 '26
Basically, real people who aren't dicks tend to appreciate when foreigners enjoy aspects of the local culture, contrary to what the "internet trolls" would try to make us believe in.

u/Dependent_Paper9993 Aug 31 '26
I don't get it? What is staged? It's just a guy eating
4
u/Feltonlu Aug 31 '26
It seems you are new to the short video dominanted internet. Staged means this actor is performing with scripts.
8
u/pick_your_user_name Aug 31 '26
He didn’t ask what staged means. He’s asking why you think it’s staged
6
u/Heavy-Echidna-3473 Aug 31 '26
Because that is definitely not a random person and this whole thing is set up for views.
8
9
u/Ruser-94 Aug 31 '26
This is clearly a skit. They obviously know each other, and no one actually eats like that. It’s meant to be a meme and to generate comments and discussion, that’s pretty obvious.
Way too many people watch these reels and automatically assume everything they see is real. This is literally how people make money off social media nowadays: “Let’s go to a restaurant, you eat like a complete freak or Goku from DBZ, people will react to it, we’ll get views and make money.” “Alright, let’s do it.”
And then you’ve got people in the comments taking the whole thing completely seriously and going full white knight with the “You shan’t film your neighbor without their consent!” 😭 Like come on, you’re falling for the exact engagement bait they made the video for. It’s genuinely cringe and boomer-like.

u/kwpang Aug 31 '26 edited Sep 01 '26
no one actually eats like that
Where did this confident statement come from?
It's normal to eat like that in Chinese / Japanese culture if you're hungry.
I grew up eating like this. My uncles too, when we had meals at my grandparents'. We're ethnically Chinese.
Thousands of years of Chinese people ate like this.
Korean culture is omitted only because they don't lift their bowls and use a spoon in their left hand. I'm sure they have their voracious eaters too.
Edit: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-xH3QEegrGs
Here is a random example found on youtube of a random teenage boy wolfing down his food.
2
u/aitigie Aug 31 '26
I've never been to China and I eat like this, I am not sure what part is supposed to be weird. Holding the bowl? Is that weird?
→ More replies (1)2
u/Moonlightdancer7 Aug 31 '26
I don't believe most videos filmed in this fashion which are meant to look like they randomly spotted someone doing something weird or out of the ordinary. 9/10 times staged for Internet reactions. In most cases you probably wouldn't have the audacity to film someone this upclose just having a meal.

It's staged and filmed like this so people can ask questions like:

It’s a little less bad if for private/family use and only as part of me being in the background or something. Heck, even if I do something funny or stupid and you want to share with your cousin to laugh about it, fine, but don’t post on forums with millions of views.

14
u/AnguavonUW Aug 31 '26
Yep. I hate it with the heat of a thousand suns. I don't know when it became okay and even rewarded to film people you don't know in order to embarrass/mock them? I don't think it's cool. I don't think it's cute. I think it makes the person filming an asshole. A gaping gaping asshole.
I know there is no expectation of privacy when one is in public, legally speaking. Ethically? Entirely different story. People who film and post things like this are suffering from main character syndrome. They can't possibly believe others have feelings and are entitled to basic fucking respect, if they're doing shit like this

There is nothing interesting about this. This person doesn’t even know he was filmed and if he finds out, he’ll be hesitant to enjoy a meal outside. Not everything needs to be recorded and shared online.

A lot of people seem offended, I suppose with good reason, but it's not certain that this person was being filmed without his knowledge or permission. It could have been a stranger, but I'm not sure that it wasn't a friend or partner.
