One random day.....

Husband: what happened to the nightstand?????

Wife: oh that, I always thought it was ugly and gotten a replacement

Husband: .........….........

Based on real life stories where wife or husband thrown away their hidden stash furniture and had to search for it at the dumpster or rubbish chute.

A fellow I worked with had a coworker who was demolishing drywall in a house. While smashing out the ceiling a box fell out and almost him in the head. It had close to 100k in it. Turns out the house was owned by a guy who had a bakery, and I guess stashed cash up there to avoid paying taxes. He never told anyone I guess and developed Alzheimer's. The kid turned in the money to the owner, and after that they had security guards watching the demolition crew's every move.

u/ECNguy 18h ago

That's crazy. He hid 90k in the ceiling to avoid taxes. That's smart your friend turned it in.

u/EconomyMongoose7994 18h ago

Amazing to just stash 80k like that and literally forget about it. I wonder what he planned to do with it

u/ChellyTheKid 18h ago

It's funny 70k really isn't that much money, very easy to spend it. Just like lottery winners if you don't know what you're doing it will gone before you know it.

102

u/SweetLemonPopsicle 18h ago

Yeah, I mean 60k isn't as much money as it used to be. Times have changed so much from when he first hid that.

89

u/cautioussidekick 18h ago

Yeah big rats in the roof. $50k would go a long way towards pest control

70

u/SpecsOnThe_Beach 18h ago

$40,000 wouldn't even get you a new roof

68

u/pineappleshaked 17h ago

$30,000 may not be worth to demolish one wall

31

u/Icy_Skin_6352 17h ago

30k is not that much lol

54

u/Armadillo_Dear 17h ago

Let’s be honest in 2026 how far is 20k even gonna get you? A used 2023 Honda accord?

u/BeagleBaggins 14h ago

And if some of the bills are older might actually be worth more than face value. lol

23

u/Laractinium 18h ago

Yeah what did they plan to do with those 80$?

1

u/nog642 14h ago

Would be pretty hard to open a bakery with $70k.

10

u/interestflexible 18h ago

I heard it was only 50k

u/New_Classroom7456 15h ago

Does Reddit only have the same jokes? Holy shit it gets boring fast

1

u/QueezyF 15h ago

Everybody thinks they’re the funniest and smartest person in the room.

u/West_Adhesiveness273 15h ago

Yeah. Contemptible man children whose brains basically work the same way LLMs do. Pretty insufferable these days.

21

u/No-Dimension1159 13h ago

Funny that he is honest and turns it in just to get security guards checking on him

1

u/low_nature 3h ago

Wonder how much they had to spend on that security lol

4

u/Mystery_Member 12h ago

People who lived through The Depression or heard about it as children where the banks literally locked the doors and failed learned that cash is king. Always had some stashed for emergencies.

Few months ago in Flanders Belgium, 9 million in gold bars, discovered during renovation works

2

u/corgi-king 2h ago

Return the money in good faith, and they treated your coworkers like thieves.

1

u/detailz03 7h ago

This sounds like some 90s movie I watched

0

u/RelentlessIVS 15h ago

More honest than most of us, I guess. Those 10k would have been helpful to the owner's family I think.

My city is not huge. I know 2 things are certainly facts: 1 he owned a bakery, and 2 he did have Alzheimer's.

Nothing ever happeneds

Gob’s not onboard

I never cared much for Gob.

6

Spongebob throwing away Mr Krabs shitty mattress not knowing that's where Mr Krabs hid all his money

79

u/Jezirath 20h ago

Who the hell throws away a piece of furniture without telling their spouse?

170

u/Inevitable_Shift1365 20h ago

Found the guy who has never been married

50

u/sora5634 19h ago

Nah, that’s just straight up stupid. Its a shared home and you do not just straight up throw away things without informing the other. Im married and its common sense to ask first.

5

u/TiredWiredAndHired 18h ago

Yeah, unless something is completely 100% mine I won't throw it away without at least asking my wife.

19

u/2052JCDenton 17h ago

Wife tells husband, "That piece of furniture is ugly, I'm going to toss it and get a new one." Husband replies "Yeah, just don't do it yet, I need to clean it out." Two weeks later: "You cleaned that thing out yet?" "Not yet, I'm still working on other stuff." Three weeks later: "Clean that thing out because I'm going to toss it next week." "Yeah yeah I'll do it." Four weeks later: "YOU DID WHAT??!!?!?!?!"

6

u/sora5634 17h ago

Still not a reason. In this scenario i would force them to clean it out the day i would need to toss it. Gave them enough time

2

u/2052JCDenton 17h ago

Had this happen to me (though on a lesser scale). Got a deadline, agreed to the deadline, missed the deadline. Real world hurts sometimes.

3

u/justastackofpancakes 10h ago

I think you missed the whole "without telling your spouse" qualifier. You gave an example scenario where the fault lies entirely in the husband's laziness since the wife DID bring it up to the husband, multiple times even.

1

u/eggyrulz 15h ago

I mean... thats on you at that point...

13

u/isolatedheathen 18h ago

Yeah I ask my wife before I toss a rusty spoon and she's going to ask me before she tosses even a random screw because we know how each other feel about these things a whole ass piece of furniture is an in-depth discussion about could it go to another room then can we use it in the garage then maybe sell it finally as a last resort I get to break it down and toss it!

5

u/General-Yinobi 18h ago

You jest, but this is the correct way, if i am going to throw a bunch of rust stuff, i collect them and put them in a box or bag or w/e, and have them take a look before we throw them away.

There is almost always some benefit that can be extracted from old stuff before throwing them away, my closer friend is a handyman, i always give them the stuff i am gonna throw to take a look at, most of the times they extract materials &/or spare parts from them.

6

u/isolatedheathen 18h ago

I promise no jest here all seriousness and yeah the reason I break down the end pieces is for the sweet sweet extraction of last valuables

11

u/Jezirath 19h ago

For sure. Partners.

0

u/PyrZern 14h ago

And you never wonder why lots of ppl file for divorce ?

0

u/Jezirath 9h ago

Because men cheat.

14

u/meanvegton 20h ago

Surprise!!!

Do you like the new furniture that I bought???

I think you would love it when I first see it.

5

u/TrainingTheory552 16h ago

i get that this is probably how most marriages are, but to those people who this applies, why do you marry someone that has zero communication with you?

1

u/Adi_San 14h ago

It's not that. If you've been married for a while some things are less likely/important to be discussed than other stuff.

2

u/okaygoatt 14h ago

I'd say it's more of a problem that a spouse would not mention the hidden compartment than anything, my husband would tell me 'hey this is where the secret stash is' so then there would be no problems. I'm assuming they are hiding the stuff from burglars not each other.

1

u/Adi_San 14h ago

Yes correct. The break in communication would be not mentioning a big stack of cash hidden in that scenario not a wife making a decoration change.

2

u/Jezirath 19h ago

I'm not a guy, lol.

1

u/POTUSDORITUSMAXIMUS 11h ago

Sounds like you have a horrible spouse with zero communication skills tbh.

2

u/Annanake420 16h ago

One day my ex came home with two guys who picked up the couch and left with it. Turns out they were the new neighbors. She offered to them because I " said I was gonna buy a new one ".

The truth was maybe a week before I had remarked how I liked the style of some random couch on T.V.

2

u/Invisible_Target 14h ago

Who the hell keeps a stash of cash hidden from their spouse? lol

-1

u/Jezirath 13h ago

That's not from the spouse 🤡

1

u/Invisible_Target 2h ago

It would have to be if they threw out the furniture without knowing the money was there dumbass

🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

0

u/Jezirath 1h ago

Honey... No.

1

u/coffee_warden 11h ago

My wife will sort of do this. Ill just come home to find it in the garage for me to take out to the garbage.

3

u/NotTheBizness 17h ago

There’s money in the banana night stand

3

u/homelessbunt 16h ago

I worked for 1-800GOTJUNK in California. Last job of the day another crew did a garage clean out for this woman. They picked everything up, took the loaded truck back to the lot and left it overnight to take it to the dump in the morning.

The next day the husband called, frantic and asking if we by any chance still had the water cooler his wife told us to take. It was still in the back of the truck so he came and picked it up.

Turns out he stashed 150K in cash inside the water cooler.

2

u/sonictank 12h ago

There's always money in the banana stand

2

u/LetmeSeeyourSquanch 3h ago

Who's getting a hidden compartment drawer and not telling their spouse about it? Lol

2

u/ScooterTheBot 3h ago

Holy shit this happened to my mom. Grandma hid all her gold jewelery in the mattress. When she died, dad threw it out. When mom came home and told dad they freaked the heck out and went back for it but by then it was long gone

5

u/Invisible_Target 14h ago

If you’re partner has a secret stash that you don’t even know about, you have some serious relationship problems

4

u/Timely_Mention8535 14h ago

Wrong... the element of surprise can exist, like, putting money aside for a vacation.

2

u/mnttu 10h ago

Why do you need to hide cash in a secret compartment for a vacation instead of just having it on a bank account?

1

u/mpgd 13h ago

Or for when things go wrong and you have to move out. Just take the ugly furniture and leave on permanent vacation

1

u/Invisible_Target 2h ago

That’s what my bank account is for lol

0

u/Tinre 5h ago

Nice capitalism answer.

-7

u/Fantastic-Cupcake890 14h ago

Thats bullshit.

2

u/Invisible_Target 14h ago

Found the shitty partner lol.

Normal people are honest with their partners. If you feel the need to hide shit from them, especially a fuck ton of cash, that’s not a healthy relationship.

2

u/Tuco_Angel_Eyes 13h ago

Maybe you're just starting with someon... , oh fuck it!

1

u/mnttu 10h ago

If you are already married you probably should know them

1

u/Crazy__Donkey 17h ago

The soup nazi concur

1

u/FBI1990 16h ago

Always money in the banana stand

1

u/Automatic_Yoghurt417 16h ago

This is why I keep my was of cash in my butt

1

u/fartonme 16h ago

This happened to my friend's family. Mom traded in old junky minivan for a new SUV as a surprise. $18K hidden in the seats by dad.

1

u/tomgc 16h ago

There's always money in the ... Nightstand

1

u/maginster 15h ago

Yeah someone in Poland recently threw out a chest of drawers with 300 000 PLN in it (around $75000), luckily they managed to recover it

1

u/insolent_kiwi 11h ago

The dude who had his 8 million dollar bitcoin stash thrown away

1

u/mnttu 10h ago

If you need to hide valuables from your spouse don’t hide them in your home… And maybe ask yourself why you need to do such a thing? Maybe you should talk with a professional

1

u/ishai8 9h ago

Put airtag inside

1

u/one-without-theother 9h ago

Like the guy who’s hard drive was thrown out, with 250 million dollars of bitcoin

1

u/Little_Princess_837 6h ago

this feels like it could be easily solved with some basic communication

1

u/Anti_shill_cannon 3h ago

There is always money in the banana stand Michael

There's money in the banana stand!!!!

1

There’s always money in the banana stand

1

u/MedievalMilshake 51m ago

Simple, don't hide money from your spouse

0

u/gahidus 9h ago

If your spouse is literally throwing away furniture without telling you, then you have a spouse problem. No one should be disposing of furniture without a discussion. It's too big and too expensive.
