Interviews Are undergrads not taught how to interview anymore?

I'm the hiring manager for a small internship program (3-4 interns per semester). It's a paid internship program, 15 hours a week, and only available to undergraduate students attending a list of ~70 eligible schools. We get a reasonable number of applications (15-20 per position) and then from there, I select 4 for 30-minute virtual interviews. I ask pretty traditional interview questions such as: tell me about your educational journey and future career goals, tell me about your extracurricular involvement, what drew you to apply for this internship position, and how would this internship fit in with your future career goals?

I've noticed an increase in internship interviewees who are woefully unprepared, have extremely poor interview skills, are not appropriately dressed for the interview (look, for a virtual interview, I don't expect a suit but a t-shirt won't do) and can't even string a sentence together. Are students not being taught how to interview anymore? Most times, I can tell that they haven't even bothered to Google our organization before the interview. What is going on?

Interviews The person who got my dream internship knew the exact questions beforehand

Title says it all. Interviewed for a PM role at Microsoft, genuinely thought I crushed it. Prepped for weeks, (literally 2-3 hours per day) got so nervous leading up to it I thought I was gonna throw up before joining the meet. The interview itself went amazing, maybe one tricky question but the interviewers seemed impressed.

Then comes the rejection email 4 days later. The best part was I found out through a mutual friend that the guy who got the offer knew every single question a week before the interview. Apparently someone who interviewed there last term gave him everything (questions, what they're looking for, skills to talk about etc.)

Basically I'm sitting here studying my ass off while this guy walks in with the answer key. Can't even be mad honestly, I would've done the same thing if I had access to that. It just made me realize how much of intern/co-op recruiting is about who you know both on the recruiting and student side.

So my main question, how on earth am I supposed to compete??? I'm what you'd call very introverted and do not have many friends in the same boat as me. Searching up 'Microsoft intern interview questions' on google only shows me Glassdoor interviews that took place in Texas 4 years ago. Still need a summer internship, am I cooked?

Interviews Versant 2026-2027 Academic Year Internships

Has anyone heard back from the hiring team at Versant for the Academic Year internships? I've received a HireVue and a confirmation that my application was passed on to the hiring team, but I'm just curious if anyone has actually had someone that isn't an auto-reply reach out to them to confirm interviews and such.

Interviews We analysed 1,000+ internship interviews - Here are the numbers nobody wants to admit.

Title. After analysing 1,000+ interviews, here's what stood out for tech and business roles specifically:

GPA: Does it actually matter? Yes, more than you think.

  • 3.7+ = 41% offer rate
  • 3.3 - 3.6 = 30% offer rate
  • 2.9 - 3.2 = 14% offer rate
  • 2.5 - 2.8 = 11% offer rate

You'll always hear people say grades don't matter. Sure, once you get a full-time job that may be true but internships are no doubt checking transcripts.

Most common technical skills mentioned:

  1. SQL - 8.0%
  2. Python - 4.3%
  3. Java - 2.0%
  4. Excel - 1.9%
  5. DSA - 1.8%

The majority of people grinding leetcode fail when it comes to a simple database question. SQL is being asked in interviews 2x as much as Python.

Past internships compound hard:

  • 0 past internships - 9% offer rate
  • 1 past internship - 19% offer rate
  • 2 past internships - 28% offer rate
  • 3+ past internships - 40% offer rate

Numbers speak for themselves, the first one is always the hardest.

Those of you applying for Summer 2027, do your research before blindly applying.

Interviews Amazon interview urgent!!!

I’m a sophomore studying computer science and a day ago i applied to a junior software development program at Amazon. I honestly just applied randomly and i wasn’t expecting a reply but the next day they emailed me with some questions. Then the same day I got a interview.

Now I have a 60 minute interview scheduled that includes both technical and leadership parts.

The thing is… I haven’t really done any LeetCode or any prep like deadass nothing cause i never expected this 😭😭 so I’m feeling cooked.

I’ve heard this one isn’t as intense as a usual sde internship and they usually stick to easy maybe medium leetcode problems. Also i had no OA either straight interview

I’ve got about 13 days to prepare, and I’m starting from zero. I know I’m cooked… but I really want this so any advice at all would really help.

Edit: Really weird but there was mock interview in my email (its for this exact jr dev role) . But in the mock interview for this position they asked no dsa? Simply code building, concepts, and like basic questions on cs??? Like huh (and behavioral ofc)

Edit: Also a lot of people assume that im just starting of 0 😭 im not i have experience and I’ve done and completed lots of projects. Its just i never did any DSA at all (LC specifically) so thats what im lacking at!

Interviews Tech Internship Open for All Students - Real Work, Not Just for the Resume

Hey everyone 👋

We're StackX, a growing startup building an ecosystem of tech and marketing. We build our own products, offer services, and our tech stack changes depending on the project - so no two projects look the same here.

*We're looking for:

We want people who are genuinely good with tech - not someone who just learns on AI tools to get by. The work you'll do depends entirely on the project you're assigned, so you'll need solid, real skills to back you up.

*Who can apply:

~Open to all tech students ~Final year students are not eligible for this internship

▪︎Role: Tech Intern

*What you'll get:

•Real-time, hands-on experience : not just observing -actually building •Exposure to multiple live projects, not just one fixed task •Direct mentorship from the team working on real products •A genuine learning curve that adds real value to your skillset •Startup exposure , see how things are actually built from the ground up

☆One honest ask:

We want people who actually want to work and contribute to the company - not just collect a title for their LinkedIn profile. If you're genuinely interested in learning and building, this internship is for you.

DM if you're interested

lets build something cool🚀

Interviews Intern Interviewing Mistakes

I recently interviewed 10 candidates out of 1000+ applicants. I want to give some advice to anyone reading this feed because small changes can make a big difference in how you present yourself to the person responsible for making the hiring decision.

  1. If the interview is virtual, I would suggest making arrangements with your school to use an open office or classroom or someplace with a professional aesthetic. While this isn't going to typically make or break you - in a "bake off" situation, it can give you the edge. If forced to take the call from your dorm, either use a professional looking background, blur the background, or make sure your room is tidy. I had a candidate giving me decent answers, but his towel was hanging off a bunk bed post and very close to his head. Nothing in the background convinced me that he was well organized. Yes, I should be paying more attention to his answers, but I'm telling you what people who have been hiring for 20 years pick up. Everything is a signal. If you can't send a good signal, send no signal at all.

  2. I am in my 50's. I have a kid out of college. I am in tech. The internship is in tech. I have people of all ages working for me. While I wouldn't allow this to stop me from hiring somebody - while answering a question about a current project, a candidate stopped their answer and said "do you know what Spotify is?". My father is 80 and uses Spotify for podcasts. Just because your parent might not be clued in to the real world, please don't assume everyone past a certain age is the same way. Use your best judgement. Yes, there are apps for music and podcasts in the 2% marketshare that you might have to explain. In general, we're trying to figure out what YOU know in a relatively short amount of time.

  3. If the HR recruiter tells you who you will be interviewing with or if it's on the calendar invite, PLEASE look them up on LinkedIn and understand what they do. Our listing asked for AI coursework. AI is mentioned on my LinkedIn profile. I had a candidate ask me before explaining something if I knew what ChatGPT was. Much like #2 above, make some assumptions off of the listing and any info you can find out via LinkedIn. Our IT department has over 500 resources. I guarantee you, all 500 know what ChatGPT is and have a working understand of it. Again, not going to rule this person out, but it does signal me.

  4. If your interview is in person, I would highly suggest driving to the location a day or two prior to the interview around the same time you will be leaving that day. Traffic patterns are weird near large cities and you want to get a good feel for the timing, the parking lot, the multiple entrances, etc. Plan to be at the parking lot 30 minutes before you are due and be at the front desk 10-15 minutes before the interview. You do not want to be rushed. Sit in the parking lot and doom scroll for 15 minutes. The alternative is not good. I had a kid a few years ago show up to a 45 minute interview 20 minutes late. I didn't even want to meet him but our HR Dept works closely with his school and they asked me to still meet him. Needless to say, there was nothing he could do to win me over.

  5. Lastly - don't embellish! I had a candidate this year tell me his greatest accomplishment which sounded very impressive. I'm extremely close to the technology that he used for the project so I started asking questions and after 2-3 really bad answers I knew that he either didn't do what he claimed he did - or he was part of a team that built it and he knew very little about how it worked.

  6. Don't worry about what you don't know! HR filtered many resumes down to a manageable amount so we assume we are only interviewing the best of the best. I'm looking for enthusiasm, curiosity and fit. I don't care what tech you know. I'm giving you 10 weeks to prove yourself. Show me you can learn our tech.

I hope you find these suggestions useful. The person interviewing you is BUSY. Do everything you can to be helpful. Ask good questions at the end. I freaking LOVE a question that is a follow-up to something we discussed in the interview, not a canned question. Canned questions are ok, but asking me something that proves you were listening and following along is a big positive for me.

Interviews Just failed for a chance at an interview due to a surprise call from the company

I haven’t done an internship interview in like a year and frankly I had no clue this was a thing..

I was so nervous and unprepared I was caught so of guard and I had no clue what to say. They asked easy questions “Tell me about yourself” and “Why do you want to work here” I genuinely stumbled on each question. At one point they had to cut me off because I was just yapping too much. I apologized to them like 10x explaining that i was unprepared.

They made contact yesterday asking me to fill a form out but I was not expecting a call the next day..

Ik I missed my chance but I feel like theres genuinely nothing I could have done to change the situation (If it were to replay again the same thing would’ve happened). I’ll take this as a learning experience and next time a company reaches back to me i will start preparing myself asap.

If anyone has advice on what to do next time or what I should do now or should’ve done it would be appreciated!

Interviews Tesla cancelled my Interview

I was invited to an interview for an intern role for Tesla, but they didn't mention specifically which position it was for and it was also at a set time without asking for my availability so I was already kind of cautious about this potential position. So I emailed them to ask which position the interview was for only to be told they made a mistake where they put me in an interview the wrong team, so they cancelled my interview. Anyone had similar experience?

Interviews They said 2026 is the new 2016. They lied! internship hit different now.

Internship hunt in 2016:

  • Upload CV
  • Write a cover letter
  • Interview
  • Offer

Internship hunt in 2026:

  • Upload CV
  • Re-enter CV… manually… again
  • Cover letter (but “keep it short”)
  • Psychometric test
  • Situational judgement test (apparently morals are quantifiable now)
  • One-way video interview talking to a blank screen
  • Group assessment centre
  • Another interview
  • Final interview
  • Radio silence for weeks

Somehow the “internship” now requires more rounds than a full-time job.

If this process feels way harder than it should, it’s not a skill issue. The system is just cooked.

Anyone else stuck refreshing email like it’s a full-time role?

Interviews Capital One BA Interns - How did you do on your Powerday?

I just had my Powerday a few days ago and did fine on the product and one case (I think). On the other one, I got nervous and made mistakes in the math that I caught on my own, but was still embarrassing. I mis entered numbers / signs into the calculator, etc. I would love to hear especailly from those with an offer for the BA Internship about how your powerdays went especially if any of you struggled and still got offers (coping). Thanks!
