Can't help but think of this box art when I see that

It definitely looks influenced by Yoji Shinkawa for the figures and Trash Polka for the backgrounds. Slick as hell.

All of the kill team covers are by the talented Miguel Iglesias. It’ll probably be him doing inside pics as well

He also did the art for Darktide. So many cool pieces.

My favourite warhammer piece was his portraits of the Primarchs

2

u/bullintheheather Apr 04 '26

Ah yeah, the actors as primarchs one.

Shit mb, I’ll change it

Miguel is this generation’s Kopinski, really brought that secret sauce back to 40k art for me :)

GW hates crediting artists. I wish we knew.

u/selifator Death Guard Apr 04 '26

Crediting people has led to hate campaigns in the past, so this one is in fact on 'fans'.

Edit: it sucks that you can't compliment people directly, but you can still talk about art you like, put compliments in the comments, etc.

I think that was only towards rule makers though

37

u/Pandacron Apr 04 '26

It expands into artists because such fans blame the artists as 'accomplices' to the rules makers for 'allowing' GW to use their art with the offending supposed rules.

Unreasonable people are unreasonable.

Could be safety measure broadened or internal policy, idk. What with online vitriol being what it is

11

u/_LemonEater_ Hive Fleet Apr 04 '26

I guess there are some miserable people who would send hate to artists for getting slight details wrong

8

u/GlaiveGary Kommando Apr 04 '26

There are people out there so miserable they'd send hate to artists even if they didn't get anything wrong. Just hate for the sake of hate. Misery loves company and all that

5

u/StolenRocket Apr 04 '26

That’s a cop out. Marvel and Star Wars get much more deranged hate but if Disney decided to remove the names of the people who worked on the movies from the end credits, there would be outrage and they’d rightly get sued.

It isn't solely the Matt Ward hate, that's mostly just the public excuse. The art credits policy comes, primarily, from GW v Chapterhouse Studios case, which GW lost because they couldn't prove any of the alleged infringed upon artwork was produced in-house instead of by freelance artists.

7

u/5Cents1989 Apr 04 '26

Even if GW paid a freelance artist to make artwork, GW still owns that artwork for the purposes of infringement

2

u/Afraid_Reputation_51 Apr 04 '26

GW lost their infringement suit against Chapterhouse.

12

u/5Cents1989 Apr 04 '26

GW lost based on Chapterhouse selling models that had rules but no official model. The parts that GW won on were smaller infringement on IP like advertising female guardsmen.

It had nothing to do with art, it was models.

27

u/Pandapeep Apr 04 '26

That's just the shit excuse GW used to justify not crediting artists.

15

u/selifator Death Guard Apr 04 '26

I imagine that artists have a professional portfolio they can reference when looking for work and that GW credits them in such a capacity when asked.

5

u/Heyitskit Apr 04 '26

It's a shit policy that has the possibility to hamper an artists ability to get further work outside of GW. If someone sees their illustrations but can't place a name to the work they're not going to go through all the friction to scour the internet to see if maybe they can find them, they'll just find another artist with a similar style that works. It's the same stupid crap with not crediting their animators (where credits are even more important as it places your name solidly in that production where your work may be iterated on by other artists).

5

u/BabyProper9938 Apr 04 '26

its an excuse, but do you think even for a second that fans dont resport to hating on artists?

-1

u/Pandapeep Apr 04 '26

I think that the artists would tolerate a few errant morons with proper credit.

2

u/maxfax2828 Apr 04 '26

Yeah thats definately the Public excuse

In that sense, GW want a monopoly on everything they have, no matter the cost. That's why they release rules updates that render their own models obsolete

3

u/Vali-duz Apr 04 '26

Oh yeah i forgot about this... The good of the many keeps getting ruined by the madness of the few.

1

u/George_G_Geef Apr 04 '26

It's also why they've rolled back staff meet and greets at conventions and open days.

1

u/Ensiferal Apr 07 '26

That was towards writers though, never artists. It came from people who took it too far when they got angry because a codex or army book was bad.

I've never heard anything but praise for the artists

28

u/Arch_Magos_Remus Explorators Apr 04 '26

Unfortunately GW doesn’t credit their artists.

8

u/Fair-Cranberry-9970 Apr 05 '26

I assume GW has their artists liquidated and background history expunged.

14

u/Misknator Nemesis Claw Apr 04 '26

GW doesn't do "credit"

2

u/Confident_Reach9989 Apr 04 '26

What would you even call this style?

2

u/mental_invalid Apr 04 '26

Not an art expert by any stretch but I think chiaroscuro might apply here?

3

u/Heyitskit Apr 05 '26

It's a duotone (black + another color)

2

u/Bzrk357 Apr 05 '26

Reminds me of the old killzone art

3

u/Imaginary-Raise2351 Apr 04 '26

What book is this?

1

u/alkxx Apr 04 '26

everybody says Yoji Shinkawa and for good reasons. But I also suggest Ashley Woods, his stuff is great even outside MGS, check out "Lore" by him

https://characterdesignreferences.com/artist-of-the-week-16/ashley-wood

-1

u/Codexier Apr 04 '26

I believe it is Karl Kopinsky. I cannot find the originals online, but the style is very similar with the same scratchy hatching and it sort of looks like his KK signature there at the bottom. Just my guess though, not confirmed.

0

u/Cattledude89 Apr 04 '26

James Workshop

-7

u/Either-Web-8045 Death Guard Apr 04 '26

Is it in the credits of the book?

4

u/Afraid_Reputation_51 Apr 04 '26

GW doesn't give artists specific credit anymore. It's all "The Games Workshop Design Team" or the "Art Team."

Its pronounced OPEN AI lol

5

u/ViviVillainous Apr 04 '26

This is from the Kill Team 2nd edition rules book. Which came out when those generative AI models were still in their infancy.

Just a joke lol
