Question WHY would GW do this??
I’m already used to GW doing everything possible to get more money from us… I’m even OK with it… but why on earth would they make a map part of the OFFICIAL competitive scene… and then not out it on sale?
I mean… I’m willing to let them take my money… I am offering it… and no. They are making something official for tournaments, and don’t given me the option to get it, master it and be comfortable playing it…
Why would they push the need of a product and then decide not to sell it? I guess I will print it, I just don’t get the logic of this.
Thoughts?

u/TallGiraffe117 Apr 25 '26
I thought they only added support to it. Are they forcing tournaments to use the terrain?
-239
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
Not forcing… but if your store has it, you may be having to play on it on tournaments… and you can’t practice positioning before it because… you can’t buy it 😅. So they open the option for a map to be used in competitive tournaments but you can’t try it out and find your strategy before having it in front of you. And it is as easy as offering it for purchase.
95
u/TallGiraffe117 Apr 25 '26
So, talk to the TO about it?
-174
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
Yeah… they will not use a map because some players don’t agree to use it… older players will support it. Putting it as an option and having 1 guy asking on a 32 people tournament to take it out doesn’t sound logical… we just have to deal with it, instead of being able to purchase it

u/topheavyhookjaws Blades of Khaine Apr 25 '26
Have you even tried? What a ridiculous and shitty attitude honestly
62
u/ExodiaHobby Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26
yeah, I agree. heaven forbid the old terrain I bought be supported again, or the heuristics of a map not be completely min-maxed, or the stores that bought it for tournament use find value in it again.
mfr thinks the inconvenience of "Why I can't I buy this?" outweighs the value brought by returning the set to the scene for the old heads and stores to enjoy.
Yeesh, what a whiny-ass take
42
u/topheavyhookjaws Blades of Khaine Apr 25 '26
Also it might actually be fun to play some games on some unfamiliar terrain, a new challenge
12
u/ExodiaHobby Apr 25 '26
Its actually super fun. a few maps have a single heavy and a light piece in the deployment zone, which makes deployment strats much more important.
While melee teams can make use of the amount of scatter, unsurprisingly rangeless guns are awesome on it. I think of it much more or a "Shooting Gallery Version" of Volkus. its got a play style of shoot, reposition closer to enemy, then pick-off exposed operatives that is a lot of fun for dakka and pew pew.
Plays a lot like a "Gears of War" entry on tabletop imho
23
u/sirbootiez Apr 25 '26
If youre one out of 32 with a problem with it.. I think we found the problem homie
6
u/TallGiraffe117 Apr 25 '26
Talking to the community/TO is still an option. Hell, you can offer your own terrain as a substitute if it is that big of a deal.
1
u/LiftedGround Apr 30 '26
Good kill team is played on random maps. I hate how solved the maps currently are.
67
u/FerrusManlyManus Apr 25 '26
Do you see all those downvotes in an hour? Please consider how you are sounding to everyone.
Hint - It’s because you are whining an incredible amount because… you think you won’t be able to practice enough on it. That’s insane. If you are this much of a try hard doofus, find out if your store has Octarius and visit the store and practice on it then. Jesus.
14
u/Optimaximal Apr 25 '26
I'm not sure the argument given is even valid. You can proxy it many ways if you need to practice on it (not that the game rules aren't standard enough that you can't infer how the set and maps play from pictures).
This is just another 'GW won't let me buy X' moan...

Thanks! I designed it for a t-shirt a few years ago, but it seemed fitting. ;p
9
u/cabbagebatman Apr 25 '26
If your store has it then you DO have the chance to practice on that terrain...
10
u/AreetPal Apr 25 '26
I think if you're honestly worrying about not being able to practice with the exact scenery beforehand, you might be taking this game too seriously.
3
u/TheBannaMeister Apr 26 '26
op probably buys whatever box is currently the most OP and then complains gw is forcing him to spend money
3
u/ozbourn Apr 25 '26
Having to play on it at a tournament because the store that you go to the tournament for has it, but you can’t go to the store to practice on it is such a conundrum.

1
u/jjjjssssqqqq Hearthkyn Salvager Apr 28 '26
If store has it, then you can go and practice days before the tournament, also if a bigger event has it you can practice going to a LFGS that has it or ask beforehand. Honestly this is just a lame excuse to not put back one of the best looking and more balanced terrains back into the competitive scene.
53
u/Candescent_Cascade Apr 25 '26
Having some backwards support is nice. Maybe it was a little early, but it's very likely to go on sale again early in 11th edition 40k - we know they are releasing multiple terrain sets to go with the new maps and as Octarius is already widely used in GW events...
As far as leaving money on the table - that's not really the case all the time that their new releases all sell out. Capacity is not unlimited and they'll happily take the sales in Q3.
-62
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
If you create demand on something and not sell it, you are literally leaving money on the table. I’m hoping the same for 11th but it is still a weird timeline since GT tournaments are in season and people that play competitive need the map yesterday to practice on it. If they start selling it by the end of the year, the ones that need it now will be printing. I still find it weird
15
u/homeless0alien All Things Chaos Apr 25 '26
They simply do not have enough factory production to meet demand. Everything they make sells out instantly so it doesnt matter if they make primaris marine number 678 or more octarius terrain, it sells. They cannot simply magic more factories into existence so until they finish building them, they literally cannot do anything to get the theoretical "money on the table" your talking about because if they did make more octarius, you would have other people complaining they cant get something else that got cut from production to make room for that terrain.
11
u/Squatch102 Apr 25 '26
What do you mean they don't summon the stuff from the warp when it's made to order!? I feel lied to!
3
u/hibikir_40k Apr 25 '26
For the last year, the vast majority of production capacity has been spent on making boxes of Armaggeddon. It happens on every new 40k edition: Printings of things before leviathan were very low. You can see it all over the place with other releases that were getting very short first printings.
Things will improve later in the year, when the new edition stops eating capacity.
4
u/Candescent_Cascade Apr 25 '26
Only if there is enough demand for it to be profitable and nothing more profitable exists that could be made instead.
The number of people who don't have Octarius from before and want it so badly now that they'll get an alternative is low. If they released it now for just KT it wouldn't sell well and would take up room that could be used on things that will sell. Besides, we know that they're stockpiling as much as they can for the launch of 11th to avoid bad press AND that they're increasing manufacturing capacity as quickly as they can. Logistics are complicated when you have as many products as they do.
1
u/pierresito Apr 25 '26
Id wager the opposite, they're counting on not getting those sales since there's a bunch of competition out there through proxies and 3d prints. Also you can just make your own terrain

What I'm gathering here is that
A) this is going to be released soon.
B) there are a few people with this terrain already out there from older editions.
C) you haven't actually come across a tournament running, much less forcing, the terrain.
You are worrying and whining over nothing.
18
u/NathanDnd Apr 25 '26
Yeah, feels like this is a sign they are re-releasing it.

u/Runliftfight91 Apr 25 '26
I think a better question would be why were you OK with it not having rules.
If they don’t give the old Maps rules, then it’s a continual phase and phase out of terrain. Which means that soon when the new editions drop ( looking forward the next ten years) your volkus will be useless, and you will have spent all that money for nothing, it means your beta decima will be useless.( even more so then normal), it means you’re tomb world be useless.
What about all the players who don’t have terrain, and are in the position you just described no matter what?
Is it at all possible, and I know it’s difficult to think about other people, that this release was not geared towards people who don’t have the terrain already? Is it at all possible that it was just a nice thing for them to do so that we could continue using previous terrain, that until now had to be home brewed?
And if it really bothers you that much, and you’re unable to visualize a terrain set up in your head, and you absolutely need to have set ups in order to practice your lines of concealment and stuff. May I offer tabletop strategy to you? Don’t even need to set anything physical up.
5
u/sobrwydd Apr 25 '26
I'm going to hijack the thread here. How do the rules for different terrain sets work? I'm coming from a background of MESBG, middlehammer 40k, Mordheim and Osprey games so assumed the different terrain sets for Kill Team are just available to create different visual and tactical options.
7
u/rust_tg Apr 25 '26
The efforts to “streamline” the rules for more recent gw rulesets like modern 40k and killteam mean that terrain interaction requires per-terrain rules rather than rules that apply to all terrain.
Imo, the route that games like MESBG take is the best: make the core rules a little more complicated, but require less per-case exceptions
3
u/Optimaximal Apr 25 '26
They are. There are some basic unique actions in there, but this is just OP complaining that they can't buy something that someone else did...
2
u/HawocX Apr 25 '26
Yes, it is only different terrain with (mostly) the same rules. But the layout differences have a big impact on the game.
This holds for Octarius vs. Volkus and Gallowdark vs. Tomb World. We'll see how next season compares to Beta Decima. As the former wasn't very popular, my guess is something completely new. Sixth time's a charm for a jungle board?
23
u/Lord_Ezelpax Ecclesiarchy Apr 25 '26
A lot of people already have it. You should print it too
-20
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
Yeah I’m printing it… I’m just clueless why wouldn’t they just take our money. BTW the map stop being sold in stores late 2021… that is 5 years ago. So any player that started playing during the last 4 years would have the same issue. Again, I agree that printing is the solution but is weird not selling something after you put it back in rotation. Sounds like telling any new player: “We love you to print stuff”
12
u/Lord_Ezelpax Ecclesiarchy Apr 25 '26
Their production is probably busy with 11th ed 40k to give octarius another spin. I for one am glad they release rules for older terrain. This release was 1.5 years late lol
-1
9
u/denten62 Apr 25 '26
I own like 4 sets of this, it was so cheap on the secondary market when everyone wanted lots of Kriegers and kommandos for 40k
11
u/fefecascas Apr 25 '26
If they stopped supporting the terrain with updated rules the moment it went out of production, people would've been 10 times more mad (rightfully so)
Not every niche little thing can be in production forever, and rules are better than no rules.
If you so passionately need them, try to print or make them out of scrap! It might be one of the easiest set of terrain to build from a pile of scrap.
8
u/AriaBabee Apr 25 '26
As an ancient veteran from Rogue Trader era ... Can you not scratch build your own fascimile to practice on / with ? I used to make my own copies of 40k terrain from plasticard with some regularity. Wasn't as pretty as those necromunda bulkheads but it had the same foot print and connected to heavy card stock for the flats
1
u/thekennanator Apr 29 '26
My wife is annoyed at this habit I developed from those days of continuously saving packing materials. "Just in case"
2
u/AriaBabee Apr 29 '26
Biggest thing that helped me declutter on that was getting into 3d printing honestly. But yea before that I had totes full of plasticard, corrugated card board and Styrofoam in neat shapes
7
u/r3xomega Apr 25 '26
The dimensions are readily available online, if not being able to practice on this specific terrain is such a concern for you, you could proxy them with prints or MDF cutouts.
6
u/Squatch102 Apr 25 '26
I am willing to bet this comes out in June with the rest of the very orky new edition.... as for competitive tournaments having this first, I doubt it, and even if they do run it, get good? It's a brilliant way to add an a new degree of difficulty and challenge imo.
5
u/fett4hire Kommando Apr 25 '26
Maybe you should just the play the game, and not try to memorize terrain?
It’s an open board with heavy cover, vantage and light scatter.
Go!
4
u/left-Dane-right-Dane Apr 26 '26
I hate that Kill Team has become competitive to the point that people complain about this stuff. Don’t forget that it’s a game.
4
u/CaptainBenzie Apr 26 '26
Lmao, such a weak argument. They're supporting old sets, which is awesome for those of us who have it. Your "outrage" (as shown in other comments) is that because you don't own it, you can't practice on it IF a tourney happens to use it, and that's GWs fault and they're being awful.
Right.
9
u/Jinofthesheep Apr 25 '26
There’s absolutely second hand copies of this available if you searched! It was the launch box for KT21, was on sale as a separate product for three years afterwards. We were all pretty sick of it by the end of the third year lol.
Not quite sure why you’re so excessively angry about it not being on sale now (I’ve read your other posts and honestly it comes across as petulant), but thank you for proving the old adage “you can’t please everyone” true.
3
u/oneWeek2024 Apr 25 '26
i mean... can buy the kill team octarius box still from 3rd party retailers. can also find the terrain items on ebay or sometimes even in "lots" on 3rd party sites.
GW is not a good company. they clearly barely have the ability/logistics to keep up with current product lines, there's likely very little profit/motivation for them to maintain production of older kits that don't have a direct sale through purpose.
ie they can barely keep needed/current models in stock. they don't likely give a fuck about keeping old terrain there's limited market for in stock/dies made/re-made, and taking up space in their production lines.
that being said. from what i understand, this is getting some sort of treatment of the stand alone terrain box. like what's in that photo.
OR can buy the kill team big box it came in originally ...so if you've got a hard on to spend money. go spend the money. quick google search found the krieg box on several retailers. just under $300
ebay has sprues from the KT box for anywhere from $200-70ish in auction.
if what you're asking for is it to be effortless to get baseline/discounted pricing for the product directly. yeah. good luck with that. IF it's released. likely it's sold out instantly, and instantly spikes scalping price.
as again... GW isn't really a good company when it comes to fair/good logistics.
3
u/CrudeLord Brood Brother Apr 25 '26
This tracks with previous release cycles. I think the last time there was s new edition of 40k we got repurposed mechanicum terrain in the form of Beta Decima.
What I am saying is; thank fuck its not Beta Decima.
3
u/davesoft Apr 26 '26
As someone who's worked at a business before, it's bold of you to assume the people making tournament decisions have any decision making ability over, well, anything else in the company.

Same thing for never making the expansions for into the dark/boarding actions available. Truly a crime. Even the book they remade for 10th has the maps with these options.
1
u/Jinofthesheep Apr 25 '26
Did you mean the extras like breachable walls and escape pods? Those were on sale separately at the time, but once they sold out that was it. Can’t realistically expect GW to stock everything forever.

u/MotuUk Apr 25 '26
I think the intention from GW is a lot more deliberate than everyone says. The reverse side of the volkus shadowhunt board is octarius. Its been in the pipeline for a while
2
u/homeless0alien All Things Chaos Apr 25 '26
There was so much of that terrain sold that its literally everywhere lol. Just buy a set second hand on eBay or something. Hell a bunch of LGS still have old starter sets of it.

u/a_ksj Apr 25 '26
My take is its nice that they've given some rules to an old set of terrain that I have. I played a game with it last week, and I got slammed. So my hot take is that is that it isn't as good to play on compared to the newer stuff.

2
u/Altruistic_Post6867 Apr 25 '26
Oh, Octarius got current edition support? Sweet. I love that terrain.
2
u/DiceThrowerApparel Apr 26 '26
The specifically did it because people like me have 16 sets of it and orher people wouldn't shut the fuck up when I would make them play on it at a tournament they didn't have official rules
2
u/stephenstephen7 Apr 26 '26
TT Combat have an MDF clone of this set that's a fraction of the price. If you want to play Octatius, I reccomend it! Its called Ork Sektor if I remember correctly.
2
u/g446589 Apr 26 '26
Are we sure they aren’t going to make the kill zone available? All I know is I would love to grab it if they do!
2
u/ksbsnowowl Apr 27 '26
As soon as Orks were rumored to be the 11th edition Xeno, I expected this old KT terrain to be available in the post-launch biggest starter set, like some of the KT Moroch terrain is now in the 10th Ultumate Starter Set.
Will have to see if I’m right in a few months.
3
u/Jealous_Stick5942 Apr 25 '26
The secondary market has a pile of those terrain sets around. GW would have to do a whole new run for that terrain set.
1
u/nogganootch Apr 25 '26
I have the original octarius set, all i did was remove the terrain from the sprues then it went back into the pile of shame. Do people still buy it?
Might wack it on ebay as i don't think I'll ever get round to painting any of it.
1
1
u/robot-0 Death Guard Apr 25 '26
You don’t need the exact terrain to practice, you can easily build the structural parts from other kits or cardboard (or both). Use crumpled paper or make something nicer with cardboard for scatter terrain (it’s nothing special).
And always remember, every kit is an Ork kit. So this is one of the best OOP kits to be legal, because there are any number of random kits you could break up for scatter terrain and so on.
1
u/SPF10k Apr 25 '26
The crazy part is that these were widely available super cheap when the box came out. Everyone wanted those Kreigers bad, bad, bad.
I'm hoping I can get a 40k table together out of the two sets I own with the new layouts. Wish I had grabbed four when they were dirt cheap.
1
u/WLLWGLMMR Apr 25 '26
Absolutely no one ever plays any game with the actual official terrain sets exclusively , every tournament ever uses at best very similar proxy terrain at worst rainbow MDF non immersive nonsense
1
1
u/TopsyKretts87 Apr 25 '26
Possibly GW earns a lot more with limited runs and FOMO, than having products available all time or re-emerging. Which means if GW sell something new, you must buy it or be SOL
1
u/MDRLOz Apr 25 '26
They are clearly planning to re-release at some point. We have 40k Ork edition about to be released. Dropping this so those 40k people have some cool Ork terrain to fight over would make some sense.
1
u/CoffeeCola49 Apr 26 '26
Just build it yourself. There are plenty of hobby guides. Hell GW has their old homebrew terrain manuals if you want that sort of reference.
1
u/BernieNL Apr 26 '26
And that is why we use 3D printers in our club. Cheaper, readily available and a lot more fun/educational.

Been playing since Rogue Trader edition and I treat Wh40k and DnD the same way I bought the early editions and just add my own rules, expansions and improvements - that’s what they both were originally about, not selling you new requires stuff every year. That came after the creators got pushed out but board committees.
Nothing they sell or don’t is required to play my “fantasy” games

-4
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
Looking for one too. Still even if they put it back on the market… it is already officially a competitive map, they are just loosing money by not selling it right now 😅
13
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 Apr 25 '26
Terrain sets take up a lot of space on the production line, and Kill Team already has a lot of moulds running.
-2
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
Then it would be enough by not making it usable in tournaments… now any competitive player that wasn’t playing the game when the map was out is just screw. Or forced to buy a proxy
12
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 Apr 25 '26
A significant portion of people who play Kill Team now have a set of Octarius at home, and most places that host tournaments have it from the previous edition.. Make sense to have it be officially useable even if they're not able to produce more.
-3
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
Any player that entered the game the last 3 years won’t. And stores having it means that in order to practice on it you neee to be on those stores… instead of just giving people to option of buying it.
10
u/Fearless-Dust-2073 Apr 25 '26
Octarius only left competitive play a year and a half ago.
I'm not sure what the problem is. If you're not a super-pro player, the intricacies and sight-lines of the map aren't incredibly important. If you are a super-pro player, you probably have a set already.
They're giving the option to people who already have the stuff so they can use it, but it's not viable to do another production run when there's already multiple sets in current production. GW isn't a global super-corporation, they've got a single (large, but single-site) factory.
3
u/homeless0alien All Things Chaos Apr 25 '26
I believe they have more than just the one factory (three in fact) and are in the process of building more, but regardless your point still stands that they are at production cap right now.
-2
u/Table_Elegant Apr 25 '26
Left competitive a year and a half ago… stopped being available in stores officially late 2021… almost 5 years ago.

GW has been weird for decades when it comes to their terrain.
Perfectly good pieces of terrain has been randomly abandoned, without any warning. Always.
Every terrain they produce is there temporarly, only the Emperor knows why.

u/KillianQuain Apr 25 '26
As someone who put hours and hours into painting this set I’m glad they’re at least supporting it by giving us rules & board layouts. It was way more insulting to not have rules for this since it’s such a good set and there are thousands of people who have it and play on it.
40K terrain has always been difficult to acquire, I love to see support for the “old” sets.
