Question How impossible is to play with these dudes? These are the worst offenders of the kill team I did, in terms of modifications

u/Akabranca Apr 29 '26
Add magnet to the smoke, so you can plug it in when you want to show off, and remove it when playing
6
u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
I did. But, sadly, the magnet broke from the plumes and got stuck inside the model. So, I just had to glue them in place.

u/Norman2_0 Apr 30 '26
You could get some tiny nuts and threaded bars for any future projects.
It should provide extra support for the model as well, just make sure it's properly supported
In the case of your models, it would work for the top smoke coming out of the backpacks.

u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
Good idea thanks. Next time I do something like those plumes I will definitely not simply glue a magnet. What you propose or maybe just pinning it in place, for easy removal
4
u/NeonMorv Apr 30 '26
May I suggest thick sprue goo to fill the void just under where the magnets are going. All assuming it's doable for you and isn't a pain. Let the sprue good set and the magnets shouldn't drop in again and you should be able to tip it out.

Don't take em to a tournament, but I think they're rad and if you wanted to play me I'd say that the smoke and fire don't count for visibility. But I would tell you that they have to fit to sit, so you might not be hiding under any vantage (narrative justification - they choke on their own smog if they get into an enclosed space like that)

u/Flamante_Bafle Thousand Sons Apr 29 '26
You cant be under terrain if the mini does not fit under the terrain (this is mainly for playing Volkus)
Also your mini can be shot if its vissible, any part of the mini counts so you will have problems hiding your minis.
Other than that, you can play with them if you want xd
75
u/Crisis_panzersuit Apr 29 '26
House-rule the smoke as untargetable— but yeah, technically incompatible with KT
18
u/Flamante_Bafle Thousand Sons Apr 29 '26
Yeah but that does not fix the "under terrain" limitations
13
u/SnoozingHamster123 Apr 29 '26
Have a mini that doesnt have the smoke. Then when he needs to go under terrain, just swap him with the one that has no smoke.
And yes, smoke is untargetable. Noone called for the apothecary cause someone shot their fart cloud :D

u/tehsax Apr 30 '26
Noone called for the apothecary cause someone shot their fart cloud :D
I'd say that depends on the weapon. A flamer might warrant an apothecary 😅

Bring an empty 32mm base and push it under volkus roof instead of the plague marines
11
u/jon_the_mako Deathwatch Apr 29 '26
Love them. The plague mist is my only concern cause there's some tight spaces in the maps.
Walking under things just use a token or another model stand in. My friend and I had a knife fight on tip top of an oil pump piston. The figures wouldn't stay up so we used tokens.

u/SinkerPenguin Apr 29 '26
That lighting on the smoke is i think the first time i find osl actually super sick

If I was playing against you I'd say that the smoke and flamethrower stream don't count, and if you wanted to place your models beneath a ceiling I'd throw my 32mm marker underneath a ceiling and insist that you could place the model there.
Anyone that wouldn't accommodate these is an asshole. These are the best plague marine models I have ever seen.

Thanks a lot for that! I have just posted more pics, if you're interested. And agree. I have never played, so I'm not going to win, anyway. Playing with me would just be to have fun, I'm not interested in being too strict, so if someone wants to consider the smokes for line of sight, fair to them, but not my kind of game, to be honest. I was more worried about how uncomfortable they would be to move around
8
u/RudeDM Apr 29 '26
As people have mentioned, you'll face two main issues here: Line of sight can be drawn from the opponent's head to any part of the model, including the VFX, and 2, models must be able to physically fit under terrain to be placed there. (This is relevant for at least a few teams.)
In casual settings both of these are pretty fixable: 1, a gentleman's agreement that the smoke be disregarded for LOS, and 2. A proxy base with a standee the same height as the original model to stand in for the painted model while underneath Vantage.
In a more competitive setting, where exactness and precision are required, you may not be able to rely on those two patches, and playing these models would put you at a significant disadvantage.

If kill team ends up a game where cool conversions like this cannot be ruled in. It’s might as well become a card game.
Looks really cool. Enjoy playing with them. Adopt the rules to match the miniatures!
13
u/Hrothgrar Space Marine Apr 29 '26
You're not wrong. Hobbying/creativity is my favorite part of warhammer. I love kit-bashing.
The main issue here is not being able to fit within buildings on Volkus. It'll be mega annoying going anywhere inside buildings with these models.
11
u/The-Adorno Apr 29 '26
Honestly 😂 I get that it's hard to manoeuvre under terrain, but people saying "well the smoke is now a part of the model so you're a target" are being silly or unfun to play with. Why can't you just not target the smoke, the head is still visible as normal
6
u/little-con-decending Apr 29 '26
100% agree. These comments have been making me want to leave this subreddit. Its a board game with plastic army men, people here need to chill tf out.
Dudes conversion is awesome, I would hella love to play against these models, and obviously the smoke isn't targetable. If people said that those didn't fit under cover and I was playing against them I would politely congratulate them on their tp1 victory and not play with them again.
2
u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
Thanks for that! And yeah, I have never played, so I am not going to win anyway, whether the smoke is targeted or not haha

u/One_Classy_Cookie Apr 29 '26
There aren't many instances where having true LoS matters in a roofed building. What you can do is use a 32 mm base as a stand in for these models when they are standing under something.
5
u/TheBigSkeeto Apr 29 '26
Ok I understand that you use the whole model as a Los, but it’s fucking smoke? I feel like you should be able to pull up a picture of the model and it be understood that the smoke is not a physical part of the model.
That’s just me. Im not gonna draw line of sight to the smoke.
2
u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
Yeah, thanks for that! I made them just for the fun of it, but I was wondering if they would be too uncomfortable to use in a game, not so much worried about line of sight. But, yeah, I wouldn't consider the effects part of the model. I mean, I have never played, I am not going to win, nor really care to win, so if someone wants to take advantage of bits are there for the cool factor, kinda sounds like they wouldn't be my type of player
4
u/twinklyfoot Apr 29 '26
These would be too amazing to NOT play against! Amazing work and I would absolutely not count the smoke for visibility.
2
u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
Thanks a lot! I have just posted some more pics as people seemed to like them
4
u/-Ephereal- Apr 30 '26
Is it possible to drill and pin so you can detach them when you're playing, then place back when on display?
3
u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
Sadly, not anymore. They used to be magnetized, but eventually the magnet broke from the plumes and got stuck inside, so I had to glue them in place. It was inevitable, in hindsight, as the contact point was too small for those very "heavy" pieces
1
u/-Ephereal- May 07 '26
Possibly get some proxy units? when they're not in cover use these, but when they have to go under terrain, use a proxy?
10
u/Zepby Imperial Navy Breacher Apr 29 '26
I mean, this is pretty massive modelling for disadvantage - gonna be real easy to shoot these guys when they're on engage. So not impossible, but you'd make it easier for your opponent.

The bases look like the wrong size and they might be hard to move but I would not mind. Not sure about other people

Make two sets. One for show, one to go. They look incredible, but trying to play with display quality with extra effects built into your minis is going to be rough. Imagine trying to balance these guys on a precarious piece of terrain for vantage.

u/YamForward3600 Apr 29 '26
Those models are sick and I’d love to play a game against them. If you are playing games out of tournament, anyone worth playing against will allow the smoke to not count towards visibility. For fitting under terrain you can throw a 32 mm base where the operative would be, shouldn’t be an issue with anyone as the smoke is not a piece of the original model.
1
u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
Thanks a lot! Yeah, I am not worried about tournaments because I have never even played a single game yet haha. I was just worried if they would be too uncomfortable to move around the board. But, yeah, I wouldn't consider the effects to be part of the models for line of sight. If someone wants to be too strict, fair for them, but that's not really my type of player I would want to play with
3
u/CatarinaOnion Exaction Squad Apr 29 '26
If you could snip the mist off and magnetize it they'd be fucking rad; just pop them off when you need to move under vantage or go on engage.
AFAIK those kinds of mid-game modifications are allowed in edge cases like this?

u/Impossible_Weight507 Apr 30 '26
This community is hella gay, imagine being such a waacfag that you'd penalize someone for a cool modeling job.

I can take or leave the flame, but man, thaf smoke looks AMAZING. I might steal that idea for my sick boys.
2
u/Neither_Pirate5903 Farstalker Kinband Apr 29 '26
unless you magnetized the smoke these are unplayable on volkus and the orc terrain because you won't be able to fit
2
u/Blanck7 Wrecka Krew Apr 29 '26
If you magnet it it would be better to have the smoke for 40k and then remove it for killteam maybe
1
u/Table_Elegant Apr 30 '26
Man this are GORGEOUS! If you were playing against me, even competitive, I would not consider smoke an would let you put a token inside terrain so they could be there even if they don’t fit.
Absolutely gorgeous

u/cancelmyculture May 01 '26
Just tell your opponent "hey, I dod this for the cool factor, I dont draw LoS from the smoke/effects" Anyone who says no is an odd specimen
1
u/Tielc May 04 '26
These look super cool. But how hard will it be to place these guys like under vantage?
2
1
u/L1feguard51 Apr 29 '26
They look awesome but you’d be at a massive disadvantage. As soon as they are on engage pretty much the entire board will be able to see them.
1
u/TheHatWarmer Apr 29 '26
Play them. They're awesome. As a T.O. myself I'd 100 percent let you play them in a tournament, the way they're modelled hinders you, so no sweat in regards to fairness.

I've been looking for smoke plumes recently but really come up short, where are these from? Cheers!
2
u/Shuyuin_mg Death Guard Apr 30 '26
They are all from deadlyprintstudio. From different models, I cannot tell you exactly which is which, as I made these guys literally years ago. But you will find lots of different smokes bits there

1
u/PrincepsMagnus Apr 29 '26
I’d let em run, might have to use ravener rules for going under vantage.
1
u/Hrothgrar Space Marine Apr 29 '26
I would heavily recommend cutting and magnetizing the smoke. They can't fit below a ceiling in Volkus.
That aside, they look great. The practicality is just going to be super annoying on the Volkus map.

If you are playing friendly games it doesn't matter if your opponent doesn't mind. The biggest issue is these guys can move under any terrain so volkus will be a terrible map to play on. they are cool models, but probably should have figured out a way to remove the smoke and flame when playing.
