Question Is Anyone Else Upset About The Killteams to be Sunset with The 2027 Edition?
Before I get into it I wanted to say that, yes, we have an insane amount of teams right now, and yes that's bad for competitive play. To that I would respond, does that really matter? These games exist primarily in our game stores and our basements/kitchen tables. We put a lot of time and love into making these teams. It feels genuinely bad to know there will be a time we can't play them without going back to a previous ruleset.
In my opinion, I think all the teams that never had a box should probably be phased out (RIP my beloved Warpcoven). They were always a way to flesh out the game while they started to release kill team boxes. I think they should keep updating the rules or even give Legends style rules for everything else that did get a killteam box, even if it's a huge amount of killteams.
I'm fine with the classified/declassified system for tournament play, but if the only reason rules support is being dropped for all these teams is that it's just a lot of rules to handle, that seems like a bad excuse to me.
What do you think?
Edit: Adding a link to the sidebar since a lot of people don't seem to be aware of this. The long and short of it is that every killteam released before the Hivestorm box is not getting any new rules in the new edition which releases October 2027.

I'd be a whole lot less bothered if we start seeing refreshes of the old teams 🤷🏻♂️

u/Crisis_panzersuit Aug 27 '26
I’ve said it before, doing the occasional expansions to pre-existing teams would have been a better way to sell new models while keeping currents players happy.
New models that go alongside the old, adding some new ploys and ways to play using the new operatives.
8
u/fiend_felgrand Aug 28 '26
Why don't they do this??? That seems like extra free money for GW
9
u/MortalSword_MTG Aug 28 '26
Because it isn't free and would lead to massive complaints.
People already get upset if a team isn't a one box team.
3
u/Crisis_panzersuit Aug 28 '26
People would be upset in the same way they are when they have to buy multiple boxes for a 40k army
1
u/ZachieWacky Aug 28 '26
It would also end up costing 20 pounds for a quarter of a spruce like the special snowflack space marine upgrade kits
31
u/Wookiees_get_Cookies Aug 27 '26
They won’t because they want to sell new models.
12
u/VindicoAtrum Aug 27 '26
Plenty of room to update some of the weaker older models, but yeah, it's a fool's hope.

I’d really love to see old teams (one’s that can still be purchased in 40K boxes) get rotated back in to classified with refreshed rules on a semi regular basis. Probably just 2 or 3 per seasons and maybe they only stay classified for a year before another old team takes their place. The rules would remain current (but declassified) for the remainder of the edition.
GW could then use those teams to fill gaps in the roster where factions don’t have a classified team or just when there’s no teams that quite fill that play style niche.
2
u/VindicoAtrum Aug 29 '26
Yeah I'll be honest I'm just salty that thousand sons have a grand total of 1 team and it's declassified. Couldn't be more forgotten about.
1
u/Dense_Hornet2790 Aug 29 '26
Not sure what an Kill Team box for Thousand Sons would actually look like but they’re well overdue for a proper release.
1
u/VindicoAtrum Aug 29 '26
Best idea I've seen so far - not mine, I'm not creative enough - is 1 or 2 sorcerer summoners + a load/variety of daemon summons!
28
u/WordlierAmlex Aug 27 '26
I agree, I only play kitchen table killteam so classified or not doesn't matter to me. In fact most of the tier lists of what's S tier and what's D tier haven't been that relevant either as the differences seem to be at the top tier of play. I'd just like all the teams that came in a box to get rules next edition, even if they are "super declassified" and can't even be played in declassified tournaments.

47
u/SudoNemesis Aug 27 '26
I think this next year of releases will be telling in that regard. Every faction needs at least one team to pull in the full range of what the 40k universe offers. At the end of the edition if there are big gaps, like Craftworld Eldar or Genestealers, without teams then there is an issue. After that I would rather the teams we have be balanced and playable than every squad be supported forever.
Also standardizing some rules would go a long way towards balance and playability. Why do we have half a dozen slightly different medic or self-heal rules scattered across the teams? Why isn’t fly, super conceal, or can’t be obscured a keyword? That’s the kind of effort I want to see in a new edition.
24
u/_Funkle_ Plague Marines Aug 27 '26
And shields! I have no idea why shields do not have their own keyword. They are consistent enough with the double blocks that they really should be.
33
u/GodEmperorLorgar Aug 28 '26
The rules bloat is one of the hardest barriers for new players imo. Anytime I try to talk to my non wargaming buddies about it they get overwhelmed. Killteam could be a perfect entry point for new players. Imo they are catering too much to the hyper competitive gamers and gatekeeping folks out.
3
u/WillingBrilliant2641 Aug 28 '26
I'm not really competitive (almost never go to tournaments, vastly prefer playing at home, running campaigns), but I want tabletop games to offer an intellectual challenge to me to be interesting. I play KT exactly because it isn't a dumb dice-chucker like other GW games.
3
u/GodEmperorLorgar Aug 28 '26
A good game can do both. There is all kinds of ways to show skill expression that aren't overly complicated rules and rules intersections. There also could be better ways to onboard and add on more rules as you go.
1
u/WillingBrilliant2641 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
That is absolutely true!
It saddens me that GW designers don't learn from modern board games how to write lean code that still offers a lot of creativity and agency. (that's why I call most GW rulesets obsolete, because their thick rulesets result in long and tedious admin -5 steps of dice rolling for a single attack is insanely dumb! - but very shallow gameplay)
8
u/Rejusu Ex-FAQ-meister Aug 27 '26
Rules should be pretty ubiquitous before they're keyworded in my opinion. It's very simple to say oh this is just the same thing used in a few places, why isn't a it a keyword. But then it's another piece of information that you have to remember or have to look up each time. There's already far too many keywords just for the weapon special rules, many of which are unintuitively named or confusing (Blast vs Torrent). KT has been trying to ape modern games with having unit cards with the rules on them. But because of the weapon rules there's already so much information that just isn't on the cards. Adding in more and more keywords just removes even more information from them and makes them even less useful.
I'd much rather they go in the direction of something like Marvel Crisis Protocol where keywords are used sparingly and nearly all you need is on the cards. That helps playability a lot more in my opinion.
3
u/NoMall2170 Aug 28 '26
I think standardising more keywords if a great idea but that doesn't necessarily mean the full rule shouldn't still be printed on the operative's data card. For all the reasons you mentioned, it makes it harder for new and less regular players.
Having it standardised under a keyword starts helping once you've already memorised a bunch of rules and are playing with or against new teams.
2
1
u/SudoNemesis Aug 28 '26
I completely agree. I think keywords should be sparse and even collapsed. Balanced, Ceaseless, and Relentless for rerolls being a prime example of keyword clutter.
What I’d like to see is standardizing the abilities to cut down on mental overload. Necrons and Raveners can heal 1d3 when they are activated. Deathwatch can do it before or after an action. Pre-nerf Wolf Scouts had abilities that worked within the storm, wholly within the storm, and if you started or ended your action or movement within the storm. One Corsair operative can block an attack outside the normal melee sequence. Another can resolve the first melee die within the normal sequence. And don’t get me started on the abilities that do or don’t require visibility…
All of these differences and exceptions add up to crunchy complexity that doesn’t feel tactical and ends up causing tons of misplays. I can’t just say “my team has a self-heal” or “that operative has first strike” without reading team rules, ploys, and data cards every other activation.
1
u/Nazgul_Khamul Aug 28 '26
Yeah, the new exodite team was a prime issue of what’s wrong with KT. A lot of my group has stopped playing it because we don’t want to do homework before playing a game. First instance my eyes ever glazed over was with the Kroot team, my friend explained each and every operatives special abilities.
3
u/BufoCurtae Aug 27 '26
Some very legitimate points you made around standardizing the rule set a bit. I've often wondered this.

I'm going to be really really bummed in there is no GSC team released between now and then. A huge part of this hobby for me is playing my faction, and them not being playable in even declassified would suck
43
u/TranslatorStraight46 Aug 27 '26
I hate it and all the arguments for it suck.
- They can’t stock all the teams.
They literally still stock all the teams in 40K boxes.
- Balance would be too hard.
Balance is about addressing outliers - overperformers and under performers. That doesn’t change whether you have 5 teams or 50 teams.
- TO’s would need to learn too much
A lot of this problem is solved by better rules writings so a TO doesn’t need to interpret random bullshit.
8
u/RaccoNooB Neophyte in hiding Aug 28 '26
100% agree.
They could even keep Declassified teams as a sort of "Legends" unit. They get an update to a new addition, but unless there's something game breaking they've got their rules for the edition.
Navy Breachers just got better slugs. That's nice, but I've played so long without it, I dont feel like its something that changes a whole lot. If they were "Legends" and didnt receive that update because they focus on a smaller group of newer units, that'd be okey. As long as they dont *remove" the units from the game! Keep that shit playable!
2
u/One_Ad4770 Aug 28 '26
An argument i have is that if you have too many teams then you end up with some teams that are broadly very similar, which would reduce the variety of gameplay. If you combined that with rule simplification and reduction, you could feasibly end up with a rock paper scissors type system, with several archetype squads and little individuality. Rotating teams out to make way for new teams does actually prevent this in some ways. Again just my opinion
2
u/TranslatorStraight46 Aug 28 '26
I don’t think they necessarily need to simplify rules, they just need to write the rules in a way that isn’t ambiguous or confusing. Perhaps that is too big of an ask for the designers that need to rewrite the ladder rule three times…
Too often they create questions with poorly written rules and have to clarify later. They fail to pre-empt obvious questions. The latest failing is with the Exodite cover rule where they provided zero examples and have differently worded rules for MOUNTED NPO and Exodite MOUNTED operatives.

u/FragRackham Hernkyn Yaegir Aug 28 '26
I'm not concerned for myself as a more active player but for my friends who I got into it a little bit. They don't build or paint or play as much as I do, but unlike a board game where they could in theory just always come back to it and the rules would be the same. If they decided to get into it and go to a store, their investment of time and energy would be fundamentally useless to them. Obviously they could sell the team to a 40K player ... And obviously they could play an older edition if someone agrees to. But without me providing that backstop or if they were to move and try to go to another city and play the game they fundamentally wouldn't be able to once this edition changed over happens. I tried to encourage them to buy more newly released teams. But knowing one of them plays corsairs makes my heart ache a little for all the people who aren't as integrated into the Kill Team scene and decide to buy a product first, not knowing that it's about to be rotated out. I'm not saying that I disagree with the decisions being made about the product support and availability. Generally it makes sense. I just hope the community is gracious enough to accept Homebrew or come to a consensus about Homebrew versions of old teams so folks can still play with their toys.

id feel less frustrated if they just did it the yugioh way: they stop actively supporting the older teams but they are still technically allowed to be played.
what would likely happen is theyd be shittier from lack of tuning after a while but every so often we'd see someone sneak through and that would be cool

The tournament companion lists all the classified teams by season. Anything before Volkus will be declassified by the end of the 3rd edition. Anything declassified will not get rules updated for 4th edition.

Considering GW has not tried to replicate the success of Spearhead for 40k, KT very much failing to work as a gateway into 40k, the good reception of Nemesis Operatives and the constant expansion/improvement of PvE elements...
who knows what will happen to any of the teams at all, KT2027 may just be as big of a shift as KT2021 was. I would not be surprised if the teams could take bigger models and combat patrols becoming a product containing a KT roster + an extra to sunk cost fallacy people into 40k.
3
u/WillingBrilliant2641 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
Saying KT could be a gateway to 40k is like saying chess could be a gateway to snakes&ladders.
The only reason why I play KT is that its mechanics have little in common with the mindnumbing borefest that is 40k.
Let a well designed, semi-modern (for GW standards) game stand on its own. Don't tie it down to an obsolete, tedious, old-fashioned dinosaur.
0
u/Bioweaponry_wielder Death Guard Aug 28 '26
You are missing the forest for the trees.
To preface, GW is constantly making smaller systems to hook you into the large buy-in that is their mainline games. Board games (Rogue Trader, Darkwater etc...), game modes (Zone Mortalis, Boarding actions...) and sub- game systems are some of the ways they do it. These game systems may not share an ounce of their rules, but the main products of Games Workshop are not the game systems - but miniatures, and 40k miniatures are sad as they are sold only for one game system.
KT 2018 was made as a gateway to 40k, with Warcry doing the same for AoS a year later. Both of these game systems were different from their "big" counterparts, but worked as a way to capture people that were reasonable enough to not buy a whole army at once.
GW then had the idea of making gamemodes for the "starter" boxes they make, so they would be a more effective hook into the full game. They hit the jackpot with Spearhead, being an excellent hook into the game system and majorly increasing the sales of the now Spearhead boxes. Considering the lack of need for Warcry, they abandoned it, only introducing Chaos dwarfes to it.
40k combat patrol launched sooner than Spearhead, with less functional system and is pretty much unplayable. It had a chance to be upgraded to the standard of the highly profitable Spearhead with the launch of 11th (it could have even served as an advertisement for their new pre-painted terrain), but they passed on it.
Back to Kill Team.
KT2018 was not that succesful, which changed with KT2021 completely changing teh game system and tightly restricting what models can be used. Over time KT2021 became profitable enough to have bespoke kits made for it. By the time KT2024, an improved KT2021 system instead of a full rework, hit the shelves, it became apparent that KT players are not migrating to 40k or playing both systems. Thus the design team expanded the range of models that can be taken in KT games, even if non-tournament ones, with Nemesis Operatives and other mostly PvE expansions. Nemesis Operatives were actually successful enough to have tournaments/events of their own! One more note for tournaments is that they experience time limit issues due to the lenght of the game, which is an issue for such a competitive-focused game.
Meanwhile what models were released for KT shifted drastically. From reused assets (Gellerpox) to upgrade sprues that may or may not recieve 40k rule support (Hand of Archon, Brood brothers) to holes in 40k armies (Yaegirs) to kits seemingly both designed for both KT and 40k (Raveners, Exodites, presumably Ork Nobz....) with the more specialist build option featuring in KT and the other "normal" one being useless (Raveners) or outright not playable (Exodites, Ork Nobz presumably). The game also switched to making the lowest amount of game pieces possible to be played i.e. every hyper elite team we got over KT2024 - and they are not stopping.
What this all points to, is that 40k lacks a smaller game systems, to hook players into 40k proper. So while trying not sacrificing the KT-only target audience, GW is modifying KT to serve as a better hook into buying a bigger portion of the 40k product line. The recent releases all try to make you buy non-KT models, or outright sell them to you. The kits building KT-only and non-KT units might also be another step - want to use the dragon lancer elves? go play 40k. Continuing to encourage the use of 40k models, maybe even at tournament level, is a thing they will do.
(I forgot to mention the rotation, but that is a well known thing)
2
u/Due_Skill_7467 Aug 28 '26
These last boxes are mostly a result of the production requirements for 11th edition. Leaks and such had exodites and spectre as one box. They split them so they would use less production time. The NPOs in the exodite box were all old orks (a line getting a refresh) models that didn't particulary sell well and GW thought the exodites would be in enough demand people wouldn't mind buying models they didn't want (that proved to not be as true as they thought since you can still find exodite boxes at some retailers).
If they turn KT into 40k lite it would kill the game and they are aware of that. KT sells extremely well and is bringing the company a lot of money and is more meant as a way to get people into the hobby for a smaller opening price. Their hope is that they eventually try out of of the other game systems or that they go deep into their side products like paints, black library and more.
Designing a box that can be sold as a kill team and then as a 40k box is just good business. Why pay to design to boxes when you can just make one set of models and give them rules for both games. 40k tried smaller game systems to bring people into bighammer and they never proved popular as GW wanted. KT was designed to be an entirely different game that brings people into the hobby. Once you start buying models and painting them you will likely keep buying models and painting them. If you don't play 40k no worries. 40k boxes still sell out. People still bought up the starter box.
Turning KT rules into 40k rules would literally kill the game. So many people play kt because they don't like bighammer. making models work in both games is just smart business and hopefully will encourage people to try which ever game they aren't currently playing. If it is just tinier bighammer than it wouldn't succeed. The difference is what makes the KT popular.
If they kill the game they won't be selling any models.
0
u/Bioweaponry_wielder Death Guard Aug 28 '26
Do not misunderstand, I am neither saying that having dual-purpose kits is a bad thing nor am I saying that Kill Team is going to become 40k lite.
The short version of my point is that KT will move to include more of 40k range as playable game pieces, as there is currently no lower-cost-of entry game system for this purpose. The rules will change to accomodate this increase in model size variety, which will likely not sacrifice the overall game system concept.
Every KT release is testing new model types, I have to point out. Luckily that means that cavalry movement will ve reworked from what the Exodites and Orks use....
(In regards to the post, this means we do not know the form of classified teams in the next edition)
0
u/WillingBrilliant2641 Aug 28 '26
I see these games totally separately and judge them by quality of rules solely. One is more modern, slick and interesting. The other is oldfashioned, tedious and boring.
The fact that they share models isn't relevant any more than the fact the same models can be used in dozens of miniature agnostic games out there. I still decide whether to play them or not only based on which offers an interesting, intellectually satisfying puzzle full of difficult decisions and which is a RNG-driven borefest where players turn off their brains and just let the game play itself on a dice-fueled rails.
0
u/Bioweaponry_wielder Death Guard Aug 28 '26
...I truthfully did not expect the "forest for the trees" metaphor to be so utterly accurate.
Kill Team and Warhammer 40k share everything from the individual people designing them to the products sold. Them being separate is superficial and only limited to the rules themselves.
2
u/WillingBrilliant2641 Aug 28 '26
Rules are everything, though. You can use a lot of different models for both games if you want (different editions, producers, scratch-builts etc)
0
u/Bioweaponry_wielder Death Guard Aug 28 '26
Rules are really not everything, especially in this case.
GW is a company that mainly sells miniatures (with licences being no.2 currently). For them, the rules are ways to add value to their product - NOT the product itself (for the most part). KT reflects the product they want to sell, not the opposite of their product reflecting the rules. And it is clear they do not want to sell only the current range of products through KT, So it will change to accomodate that.

There are several reasons for the Classified system:
- Practical reasons. It is already difficult for stores to keep a stock of the currently-available teams, imagine how difficult it would be to manage stock of every team that there has ever been, even the ones that nobody cares about any more because more come out every few months.
- Balance reasons. Kill Team is a complex game with a lot of rules interactions and a lot of ways that specific teams and operatives break the rules. It must be a nightmare to keep up with balance, and again imagine doing it for every team that has ever existed.
- Tournament reasons. Similar to balance, TOs need to ensure that tournaments are fair plus have a reasonable knowledge of how the majority of the game works. The more teams there are, the harder that job becomes.
14
u/BufoCurtae Aug 27 '26
I totally get your points here, but we're not actually in disagreement. I think it's totally legitimate to have a more narrow list of recently released killteams as the only killteams able to be played at tournaments. That's great for the competitive scene and encourages that scene to keep up to date with new releases.
What I'm saying is, keep making the rules for all the currently declassified teams that exist that released in a killteam box so we can keep playing them ourselves, and focus the rules team only on those classified teams currently in play/in print. All they have to do is give these teams an update largely based on the old rules assuming the game doesn't drastically change moving forward.
If things get unbalanced with declassified teams, that's totally ok. Ultimately it doesn't affect tournament play since they aren't legal regardless. Just give us something to work with so my killteams aren't destined to rot on the shelf.
9
u/SnooCakes1148 Aug 27 '26
Term rotation implies something comming and going, not just going away forever. They could make old teams made to order, put the away for a edition and then bring back with new rules. To fully destroy them is done mostly for money grabbing.
9
u/dorward Gellerpox Infected Aug 27 '26
It's pretty clear that for 3rd edition they've settled into releasing Kill Teams that are also new units for 40K, and when they leave Kill Team they settle into the regular 40K range.

I'm just never going to build a 40k army tbh. I prefer skirmish games.

It's about the rules support, not the actual kill teams themselves being available. Anything out of print I can proxy with something else anyway.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect a for profit corporation to consider that there may be a reduction in profits from players leaving their game systems all together over being forced wholesale into new minis given the entire concept of legends rules in 40k and how they've spend over a decade very slowly phasing out first born marines.
They have literally done this for their other games before to other degrees. I think it's reasonable to ask them to take a stance they've already taken with their other games.

It is unreasonable for a random Reddit user to think they know better than GW what GWs long term goals and optimal release schedules for models should be.
None of us have the data to remotely determine that.
People (overall) aren’t leaving GW games, and they aren’t leaving KT, both are growing and KT is probably their third most popular game currently. A few people sure, but that’s more than made up by newcomers.
GW is going to GW. We get to choose to accept it or just move along.

u/BufoCurtae Aug 27 '26
I see this kind of statement written here all the time and I can never get over how completely whipped it always sounds. If the consumers are unwilling to advocate for their best interests, then the company will simply get to charge you more for less. Everything in this world is a power struggle and when you give up and say "this corporation clearly knows what's best for me" you lose.
There's a difference between acknowledging that you, individually, have no control over how a large corporation behaves and acting like there is no possible way to ever make a corporation alter the terms of the deal to be more in your favor via public pressure and sales pressure. You are doing the latter for free to their benefit right now. I can't imagine why anyone would act that way.
1
u/Flat_Explanation_849 Blades of Khaine Aug 28 '26
Acknowledging reality isn’t being “whipped” dawg.
I’m not here for the hopium/ copium. I know what GW is, I like their product and their IP for the most part so I pay the price and enjoy the games I play with friends.
GW has been successfully pumping out miniatures for decades and built their company into a huge entity. If you think your opinion is so relevant then get a bunch of people together to boycott GW and their products and see what happens. Until then you’re just screaming into the void.
So far attempts like that have had zero to very minimal impact from what I’ve seen, but I encourage you to organize a bunch of people and try make a huge company follow your perception of how they make money.
1
u/MortalSword_MTG Aug 28 '26
Agreed here. These dudes just don't get that you can't buy a $60 team or two and think you have control over the huge multinational corporation.
0
u/MortalSword_MTG Aug 28 '26
If you're unwilling to buy a new team or two every couple years then you aren't really a customer anymore.
The part of your attitude you're not being forthcoming about is that you think once you buy a $60 team box you should have that product supported forever.
That's just not really a tenable business strategy for GW. They're not a small scale mini manufacturer that is going to put out one ruleset every decade or so.and be content with some piecemeal sales here and there.
Love is or hate it, it's a huge beast and that beast needs to eat.
1
u/BufoCurtae Aug 28 '26
I'm literally hobby-ing my 4th kill team at the moment, it's inquisitorial agents aka 3 kill teams minimum in a trench coat. And it's getting killed in a year.
I'm very much their customer. I be buying minis, I be buying paints. I have a god damn vortex paint mixer for christ sake.
I just want my teams to be playable.
Any dog owner knows that a beast will eat literally everything and anything they can get their hands on. No isn't in their vocabulary. Hell, they eat themselves to death if you let them.
1
u/One_Ad4770 Aug 28 '26
4th kill team isn't nothing, but realistically its also not that much. I don't consider myself to be a huge spender on warhammer but I have 18 teams. Across the past 5 years of kill team, thats 3-4 teams a year. Your average for the lifespan of killteam is less than a team a year, I think its probable they are more concerned with keeping customers who make regular repeat purchases than those who buy a team and want to play it for years on end.
No shade, just a realistic view of their business model. Those they risk losing by removing support are probably those they don't sell many minis to in the first place

GW have enough revenue from KT to have resources to balance out all kill teams for competitive play, dont give them excuses. If anything I would argue bigger pool of teams creates a healthier wr distribution and not just rock scissors paper situation. In my opinion, there should be more permanent teams like AoD, purely for the sake of keeping KT identity and easier entry point, but thats whole another discussion

u/Crisis_panzersuit Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
Kommandos, Phobos, Farstalker Kinband, AoD/Deathwatch, Voidscarred— hell, even kasrkins; all iconic and extremely well designed teams that should arguably have some sort of evergreen presence.
2
u/L0ng5h0t303 Aug 27 '26
Was there an official announcement that I missed?
5
u/Crisis_panzersuit Aug 27 '26
It’s been announced for over a year; the older teams get declassified, then they don’t get rules for the next edition.
1
u/L0ng5h0t303 Aug 28 '26
where can I find the list?
3
u/Crisis_panzersuit Aug 28 '26
They are in the official app, under the ‘APPROVED OPS 2025 TOURNAMENT COMPANION‘

2
u/ilore Declassified Aug 28 '26
That's why I will stay in this edition. My favourite teams won't have rules next edition, so I won't buy it. GW won't have my money. That's the only language companies understand.

u/whoareyouguys Aug 28 '26
I don't get the fuss. I understand being attached to an old team - but I guarantee there will be community rules for all the old teams. So your kitchen table game with your friends will be just fine. And I don't understand being into Warhammer and not being excited for new releases enough to occasionally buy one. Like if you can't buy one team every 3 years then honestly do you even like the game? Hell, even if you just stuck to one faction you still have in-rotation teams. Sure, it's not perfect and without any downsides, but it's better than the game swelling to more than 50 teams and making the competitive scene impossible. It's already too difficult to learn the game to an expert level, there are just too many teams.
1
u/fett4hire Kommando Aug 28 '26
Y’all need to remember that you can always still proxy your hard worked beloved models as something. Match the base size, model size at least the same size as the one your proxy is for.
Send it.
1
u/mervolio_griffin Aug 28 '26
I think it totally depends on your community and the local scene.
Where I play, proxying is fine. I've seen vet guard used as Brood Brothers because most models have a basic 1:1 proxy.
You should be able to carry over your XYZ guard team models to the new addition with a few spare bodies and bits to add things you can't proxy.

u/jameswales75 Aug 28 '26
Has GW said explicitly anywhere that every team from 2nd edition will stop receiving rules updates at the launch of the next edition? All I can see is a pledge in the tournament companion that declassified teams will continue to receive updates throughout the current edition, which isn't the same thing. Also, on the current timetable, the Bheta Decima season teams will still be classified by the time they launch next edition.
3
u/dorward Gellerpox Infected Aug 28 '26
Has GW said explicitly anywhere that every team from 2nd edition will stop receiving rules updates at the launch of the next edition?
Yes. When (possibly just before) 3rd edition came out.
Also, on the current timetable, the Bheta Decima season teams will still be classified by the time they launch next edition.
They will lose classified status during the gap between 3rd and 4th ed.
1
u/jameswales75 Aug 28 '26
It doesn't say that rules updates will stop, it says they will continue throughout this edition. Rather than have dozens of teams lose their rules in one fell swoop, I wouldn't be surprised if the devs give all of them one last update to make sure they're in line with the ruleset for the next edition, but cease regular balance updates.
1
u/BufoCurtae Aug 28 '26
0
u/jameswales75 Aug 28 '26
That's one interpretation of what GW has said. Here's a different interpretation: https://canishoot.it/rotation
2
u/BufoCurtae Aug 28 '26
There's nothing to lead me to believe this interpretation is accurate but a man can dream
1
u/jameswales75 Aug 28 '26
I just think that wiping out half the teams in the game in one move would be such an obvious mistake that the devs will avoid it.
1
u/AnthemSkyla Aug 28 '26
Depending on how 4th shapes up, I'll either find homebrew versions of extinct teams or make them myself. I might even keep playing 3rd, though I'm sure it won't be that bad.
1
u/Jurat2390 Aug 28 '26
I'm curious because teams like legionnaires are kinda essential to their faction overall, so unless they plan to get rid of that unit entirely I don't see how they can retire it.
1
u/johnbburg Aug 28 '26
I picked up the exaction squad on sale over the summer… are they phasing out?
I own three kill teams, all still unassembled, I’ve never played kill team, but might be the more realistic way to get a playable “army” painted. Since I seem to be moving credibly slow on my regular 40K stuff.

1
u/bark_wahlberg Aug 28 '26
From the way GW has handled Kill Team since 2021 there hasn't been too many big changes with the game mechanics (action points/ movement/ ect.). If this stays true, which it probably will, then if you don't want to play old editions you should be able to play old teams with a little homebrewing. Sure you won't be able to play in tournaments but if that's your thing you know that whatever team your playing is always going to be temporary. The beauty of traditional war games vs video games is that there are no servers to shut down, your game and your team will always be playable.
1
u/IronManLegoFan Aug 28 '26
I'm gonna be completely honest, this is one of the reasons that I absolutely hate the new bespoke rules system. In the short term, you can introduce some really cool and hyper-specific concepts! In the long term, though, you inevitably have to choose between "insane and fundamentally impossible-to-balance bloat" and "the subset of things that the game actually allows you to represent is absurdly restrictive due less to a creative vision and more to practical limitations."
I would legitimately welcome back a system that has more 40k style list building over even my most pipe-dream concepts getting a bespoke team in the modern system. I resent that I own four Imperial Guard kill teams (Death Korps, Kasrkin, Aquilons, and Spectres) and instead of learning a single ruleset and getting to use models I own, I have to learn distinctive rules for each and they're all gonna get phased out at different times, not because the concepts are less relevant but because GW wants to sell more plastic.
I really just miss Heralds of Ruin's old Kill Team rules, man...
1
u/Dirty_Dan2201 Aug 29 '26
I honestly just might not pick up the new edition. I have specific teams i like to play and them going out of cycle is just meh to me. Not to mention its been a very hot minute since any team has grabbed my attention
1
u/yamabushi101 Aug 29 '26
No I love it so much when 4/5 of my teams just evaporate from the game. Especially when two of those are their respective faction's battle line unit so you know the boxes aren't going anywhere. Doubly so when I buy an extra box for one of them to get all the various build options. Triply so when I haven't even assembled two of them yet.
I knew about the classified system when I got into this game, didn't care, it's like Legends but with updated rules. It's perfectly fine to not keep producing every box forever and to have a competitive format with a rotation, I can always just play declassified events and casual games. I didn't know that half the game goes poof every edition, and that's bullshit.
I will for sure buy more teams from GW in the future, the two 3D printers I own are just for their aesthetic quality.

u/Agreeable_Rope9015 Aug 29 '26
Rumor says we could have a Grey Knights versus Thousand Sons boxset in the coming year? That would be GREAT! Magnus did nothing wrong! The first Supreme Grand Master of the Grey Knights was a Thousand Son named Ianus or Janus!
1
u/_Funkle_ Plague Marines 24d ago
A little late to the party, but hopefully the teams being sunset can survive in a sort of “Legends” way. Like if the new edition is mostly just a rework of the edition and doesn’t completely have new rules, it’ll be great since we can just port our teams over mostly unchanged. That being said, even if they just got legends rules and could continue to be used even without balance updates, I’d be cool with that!

u/csRemoteThrowAway Aug 27 '26
I mean, just part of being a GW game. My ad mech kill team from 4th edition kill team isn't viable and there doesn't seem to be any indication they ever will be again. So sure when 7th edition likely comes in 2027 will it mean some teams aren't viable anymore sure does. Just sort of a GW thing, I still have plenty of models from 40k 3rd edition that have been obsolete for years. GW is out to make money, they make money buy selling us things, not supporting them for 20 years, so just one of the prices we pay to play the game. If you want to keep using your teams then just keep playing 6th edition, nothing stopping you.
1
u/GlaiveGary Kommando Aug 28 '26
I think they should bring back the compendium system alongside the bespoke teams, so that we can still use our models that way. Sure the compendium teams would be a lot less competitive but it's something
1
u/SHADOWSTRIKE1 Aug 28 '26
I’m blown away that Games Workshop feels like the number of kill teams is too much to work with to maintain. They act like there’s hundreds. I’m tired of feeling like Kill Team is a subscription service where my models expire after just a few years.
GW continues to be a multi-billion-dollar company that acts like it only has 8 people running it. For the money it pulls in, there’s no reason they don’t have a large team hired to do nothing but balance/update Killteam and nothing else.
1
u/PopeofShrek Aug 28 '26
Yes, kill team has been horrible about making sure every faction has some representation. Numerous factions hasn't seen any kill team content since the compendium last edition.
Like I waited years just for plague marines to get a passable ruleset (very fun and thematic rules but no customization at all), will be very frustrating to see them dissappear again in a year or two with likely years to wait again before dg make it back in.
They really need to make a compendium again. Just a solid set of rules for the basic troops of each faction, but with a good amount of flavor instead of what thsy gave us the first time around.
0
u/MikeZ421 Aug 27 '26
They should release a supplement giving us the ability to create our own teams. My thought anyway.
1
u/LordHoughtenWeen Corsair Voidscarred Aug 27 '26
That's how Kill Team 2018 worked, I'm sure you could find an old rulebook if you looked around.
2
u/MikeZ421 Aug 27 '26
Weren’t the rules way different though as that was the initial release? In any case, maybe just an updated compendium for casual/narrative play. The could still keep the classified and normal release schedule which would satisfy tourney players, while also giving more of us normys access to a great pool of models to use.
-2
u/LordHoughtenWeen Corsair Voidscarred Aug 27 '26
Of course the rules were different; if the rules were the same it wouldn't be another edition! Most crucially, the team composition rules were different in a way that lines up with the thing you want.
2
1
u/MikeZ421 Aug 27 '26
Ok, so explain to me how a well outdated book would help in this situation.
2
u/vix- Aug 27 '26
Because you could plays 1st and make your own team?
1
u/MikeZ421 Aug 27 '26
That is not what I was suggesting. I like the current edition and am hoping they release something to give people more freedom to build teams outside the bespoke ones.

1
u/gekidorage8185 Aug 28 '26
These issues that everyone is bringing up is why some people are switching over to games like One Page Rules, that have pretty much the same setup as kill team but the rules are have been simplified
-3
u/MortalSword_MTG Aug 28 '26
Yeah the dozens of people who are too cheap to stay in a GW ecosystem are going to go buy the system that is simpler and way more affordable.
They're also going to be big mad when they can't find people willing to play it.
1
u/Lionhearth92 Aug 28 '26
I'm interested in what comes next. Even though I have most of the teams that came out. So about half of my sizeable roster will be gone.
But I would be very happy if some of these teams got the AoD treatment.
For example Nemesis claw and Legionaries could be folded into one team. Vet guard and Kasrkin also. Brood brothers and Wyrmblade. The list goes on. The roster size could be reduced, we could get new and interesting ways to play our teams and GW could sell old models to people who want the "new" teams.
1
u/Expensive_Trash_8474 Veteran Guardsman Aug 28 '26
I dobt play that often and I spend months painting each new team, only to have them completely kerfed or modified before playing even once.
Im kinda exhausted of rule updates that render useless datacards in seconds, new teams with more and more complex rules each time, and phasing out teams. Will probably stick to this edition and drop out.
Not a tournament player so no need to be using the last update of everything in the end.
1
u/Individual_Thanks309 Aug 28 '26
I mean if you play competitive you have to follow the meta and updates to win. But nobody is forcing you to do that if you play to have fun with friends? Kill Team is like dnd meet xcom for me and my friends, we follow the base rules but then add whatever we want to make it fun and cinematic.
-2
u/Flat_Explanation_849 Blades of Khaine Aug 27 '26
No one is stopping you from playing whatever edition you like.
If you prefer teams with rules only for this edition, keep playing this edition with them. Easy.
8
u/wastecadet Aug 27 '26
that's just not true though.
You have to play whichever edition the people you want to play with play.
2
u/MortalSword_MTG Aug 28 '26
If you want to keep playing the current edition of a game you'll have to support it by being willing to buy something once in awhile.
1
u/Flat_Explanation_849 Blades of Khaine Aug 27 '26
Well if you can’t convince others to play your preferred edition, that’s kind of your answer too.
0
u/Exact-Trifle-3550 Aug 28 '26
Not at all to be quite honest. From a competitive players standpoint theirs a lot of older teams that are just tired/played out to play against. Combine that with the fact that a lot of older teams either don’t balance well, or are so over tuned to catch up with the newer teams they end up being ridiculous monsters. A great example being something like Fellgor, who at this point have one of the most contentious and hard to balance faction rules in the game. I’d like for them to rotate out. That being said, I do think having scenes where you do declassified/retro team events and classified events is important to allow people to play teams they enjoy. I just personally don’t enjoy playing against older teams or the amount of teams in the game right now the same way I don’t like that almost every new team is a marine team with zero character besides ceramite
0
u/Revolutionary-Skin81 Blooded Aug 28 '26
I switched to necromunda because of gw's 'fuck you and the teams you like buy new stuff right now!' policy.
0
u/No_Mud_8228 Aug 28 '26
This game needs an archetype system similar to what they did with the NPOs. Standardized rules to make your team picking up rules and operatives from a point based system.
-1
u/cruiseruse11 Aug 28 '26
This was the last straw for me. I'm done with GW. They're so anti gamer and I'm very dissatisfied with their business.
0
u/Zapdraws Aug 28 '26
I hated that they decided to make teams rotate. So many players put a great deal of effort into building their teams with kitbashing, customization, and putting in extra effort on painting. It takes a lot of time.
Kill Team shouldn’t be treated like MtG Standard seasons. It takes less to buy and trade for the cards to build a deck. I think Magic sets even stay in standard longer than Kill Teams do, now that I think about it…
2
u/Skanedog Aug 28 '26
"It takes less to buy and trade for the cards to build a deck."
You really don't play Magic do you?
Kill Team is hella cheap. You need one small team and you get to play them for the entire season. Comparatively tiny investment compared to other types of hobbies like this.
1
u/Zapdraws Aug 28 '26
I do play. I limit myself to Premodern now because it got so expensive. It just takes less effort to collect the cards for a deck. You’re putting a list together. With Kill Team, you still have to assemble and paint the models. A lot of players customize their minis to be more unique.
0
u/Additional_Wrap_2004 Aug 29 '26
Nope, not worried in the slightest. Only play for fun so my opponents and I can play whatever want, however we want. GW killed the hobby editions ago. <old man yells at clouds>
0
u/mephistophotron Aug 29 '26
I don't have much KT experience yet but if they made the Kill Zone larger would that address some of the balance concerns between shooting focused teams vs fighting focused teams? A little bit larger field of play would allow shooters more opportunities to take out fighters before they get too close.
0
u/Purple_Comfortable38 Aug 30 '26
I understand what you are saying, but once this current rule set gets its last update we will all be in a position where we can play all the teams there are rules for at that point in time (that can be bought or you already own) and that someone else wants to play. Forever. With stable rules. A weaker point, but if you can’t find someone to play against, there are also the solo PvE ops. And the best part is that playing the ‘old’ rules does not prevent you also playing new rules - with teams that are not retired or often using your lovingly constructed models as proxies.

u/Mental_Midnight8247 Sep 08 '26
It's GWs way
The fact that this game is even still supported at all is actually quite unique in GW terms...

Just keep playing em?
They're just declassified, not deleted.
2
u/BufoCurtae Aug 28 '26
Have you not looked at the sidebar of this very subreddit? Consistently surprised how few people don't know that literally every kill team released pre volkus won't get any rules by October of next year.
Why would I make this post if that wasn't the case? They are essentially getting "deleted" from the next edition.
-1
u/Crisis88 Stealth Kroots Aug 28 '26
Gellarpox and Starstriders got a re-release, despite being almost explicitly produced for last edition.
Everything valid for 40k won't be disappearing as part of the model range, and that means I wouldn't rule out re-release for next edition for almost any of the baseline faction teams, like Legionary etc.
That's before even knowing anything about subsequent edition rules, or anything in general about it, which also means you can't state anything about how difficult teams rules being easily ported over to next edition would be.
That's also ignoring proxying, kitchen table, or any homebrew rules for running teams you want to without them explicitly supporting them.
They're your tiny toys, do with them whatever you want. What's the alternative?
90 Killteams in the game?
That's an almost insurmountable info volume for newer players, which is hardly going to aid the longevity of the game itself. What's your reasonable alternative?
1
u/BufoCurtae Aug 28 '26
Didn't read the sidebar nor my post eh?
2
u/Crisis88 Stealth Kroots Aug 28 '26
I did, but what's your point?
Do you just want 1 edition of eternal killteam?
I've come across you having a whinge about this across multiple posts, without anything constructive or useful, so I'm not sure what you actually want. They're a miniature company first, and produce games second.
If they don't make new editions, or new teams, and phase out old ones, games get both bloated and stale, and their bottom line suffers.Saying "Read the sidebar" doesn't add anything to the conversation, yes, I'm aware of the dates teams aren't getting supported after.
What's your actual, reasonable, viable alternative?0
u/BufoCurtae Aug 28 '26
Probably a literal description of my viable alternative that they currently use in multiple existing game systems in my post if you care to read it. I'm grown tired of repeating myself and you're clearly not interesting in reading it anyway.
1
u/Crisis88 Stealth Kroots Aug 28 '26
By all means, just ignore any points anyone else puts up, and refuse to actually defend your position, but don't expect that to get you anywhere.
As for you repeating yourself, that which can be asserted without evidence can be disproved without effort1
u/Crisis88 Stealth Kroots Aug 28 '26
See, there's your issue.
You have a suggestion, but that doesn't make it reasonable or viable.
You think that updating (at time of release) ~47 teams, keeping them balanced with all future releases, is reasonable. Even if we only get 2 teams a quarter, that's another 8 a year to balance, even ruling out some of the wild release states of teams requiring shorter-time frame adjustments ie sanctifiers, Murderwing.
Going beyond that date in 2027, we'd have upwards of 60 teams. It's a factorial issue with regards to balancing teams. Every team you release has unique interactions with pretty much every other, and the more there are, the more there are likely to be balance issues.
Each additional team adds time to how much work per slate, especially after each Crit Ops update. Just saying "Do legends support" doesn't really fix it.Balance work takes time, effort, and costs money; GW is a company who's foremost goal is make money.
Having one of their larger IP formats/games becoming bloated, harder to navigate for new players and no more profitable for them to maintain is hardly going to be good for the game, is it?0
u/BufoCurtae Aug 28 '26
First, it would be less teams to start with if we start only with teams that got a kill team box release. They could do them all regardless but yeah, I even gave them an out for a bunch of currently supported teams.
Second, it's completely reasonable and viable to have them make legends rules for all the teams. They already have a classified/declassified system that solves all your tournament issues for rules bloat, balance, new players, etc. It simply doesn't matter that much if they just get some rules at the beginning of the edition and aren't touched again. Even if they're unbalanced. It isn't something they need to spend resources on because it's locked to casual play. They even already spend resources on doing this for their other games that have way, way more rules bloat so it's well within the realm of reasonable and viable.
Third, every game company is performing a balancing act between making a game people actually want to play and making money from that game. It's not my job to advocate for their side of the equation, I advocate for my side of the equation. We both struggle and a compromise is the result. You don't have to do free work to the benefit of a corporation that creates a game you love but is explicitly out to make you pay the maximum amount possible for it. When you don't do this, you are actually contributing to making the game worse for yourself.
Consider this, In a world in which we are a more discerning community that actually stops buying this crap when they decide it's time to make you rebuy your space marines for a 3rd time, GW would actually be motivated to sell us new models on the basis of them actually improving the models on multiple vectors to make us never want to deal with the old ones again. We're talking better sculpts, more included bits, selling bits separately, multipose support where possible, more frequent releases, better rules support, etc, all while your friends that played in school could still unpack their old minis from a cardboard box, go down to the game store with you and actually play! No more "damn this isn't worth getting back into because all my stuff has no modern rules" or "god I'd have to find a specific group of old heads with access to old editions to play" or "I don't have a pile of money and time to restart from scratch". Your friends could just get back into the hobby with no friction and probably end up buying way more new minis than if they never bothered to get back into it in the first place.
We get the product we collectively accept, ultimately.
1
u/Crisis88 Stealth Kroots Aug 28 '26
The teams from the current list who didn't get a box only totals 5 or 6, less than 6 months average releases, so doesn't really solve much of the bloat.
Legends works for games that balance via points, KT is much less list-building and so you can't just perform the equivalent of giving them a profile then adjusting points to shift win-rate.
The issue is that anything over performing or warping the meta will need to be touched, regardless of source.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the compendium, but man did some of those teams just languish, and was almost worse having something crap but present and ignored, compared to just proxying to use better balanced rules with the models you want.I agree there, and the wolf scouts reception in EU was a great example of voting with your wallet.
I'm not advocating for their end, just being realistic that there are more pertinent factors to their decision making than how a small % of the factions spending money on the game think.
KT has a strangely large population of "whales" using the gaming mtx term.I appreciate the last part, and I'd love that, but nature of the process that produces the actual product means some of that is just not viable, because there's just not enough benefit to the cost/benefit of doing it.
And unless GW physically pinkertons you and smashes your models, there's no reason you can't say in fact your insert model name here is actually new model replacement on tabletop. It's a laugh when people say a game is miniature agnostic; every game is miniature agnostic unless it's prescribed by silhouette.I'm for voting for your wallet, they're not forcing you to buy the new stuff, or throw out all your old rules. Hell, people still play discontinued games that don't even have new versions, continued and maintained by the community.
I totally get your position, I do, I just don't see a good compromise when people will buy stuff just because it's novel
-1
u/TheSlothDuster Aug 28 '26
