A New Feature in r/Laundry - Reply With Resource

The Problem:

The Reddit wiki/community resource tools still suck. But we get tons of new posts where the fix to the problem is well-plowed ground. Scrud, color transfer and polyquat spots are good examples. Questions about Spa Day are perhaps the archetype.

The Solution:

One of the mods over at [r/CapitalOne](r/CapitalOne) has developed a VERY useful tool for letting any commenter reply to a post with a link to an FAQ-type post, and they can even pin it to the top of the comments. It's called Reply With Resource, and I've posted a couple of comments to this post so you can see how the replies look when you use it. Feel free to try it for yourself here.

How to use it:

User Instructions

To summon the app and make it comment a resource on a post or comment:

  1. Locate the context menu for the post or comment you want to reply to. The button for this typically looks like three dots ("...").
  2. Scroll down to "Reply with resource."
  3. Select a resource via its title in the drop-down.
  4. Choose whether or not you want to pin the resource to the post. In some cases, this option may not be available.
  5. Click OK. That's it!

If you wish to delete the comment (for example, if you accidentally selected the wrong resource), simply comment "!delete" (without quotes).

A Request:

I've gathered some of my most popular posts that get used this way as a starting point, as well as [u/Far-Shift-1962](u/Far-Shift-1962)'s Sunscreen Stains Guide.

If you maintain regional Lipase Lists or other country-specific product recommendations, technique documents, or any other sort of reference post that would be helpful to posters, please send a Modmail with:

  1. Subject: Reply With Resource Addition
  2. The URL of the post you want linked to
  3. A brief description of what information it provides
  4. A proposed short description for the menu

I'll work through getting them added. Please send it to the Modmail rather than messaging me directly or commenting here, so it can actually get worked.

I'm genuinely hopeful that this will help point people to high-quality resources.

FEBU is legit so good

I just used FEBU for the first time yesterday. It made the majority of my clothes feel amazing so far. The shirts are so incredibly soft and fluffy like organic cotton feels. Does anyone know if this feeling goes away, do you get used to it feeling so good you no longer register it?

I had this same experience when we bought a new washer a couple years ago. Almost everything felt so soft and fluffy initially. However, after awhile I didn't notice that amazing feeling anymore.

I experienced this same feeling again when I first started using Down Rinse and Refresh. The fabrics felt so soft and fluffy, but eventually I didn't notice it anymore. I wonder if I just got used to it?

Ok now y’all. My drawers are full..

I’ve been doing a slow dive into laundry. Detergents, rinses, stank spa days. The works. I first noticed a difference when I replaced my softeners with citric acid. I could BARELY stuff all my towels in the linen closet but kinda blew it off to laundry fervor. Nope. It’s real. My towels are fluffier, cleaner and my linen closet runneth over. Then I got into spa day and all the funk and glory that it beholds. Now THAT was quite the journey! THEN I got some rinse and refresh and I’ll be gawd damned but I can for real barely stuff all my undies and socks into their respective drawers. It’s crazy how much of a difference these changes have made. I’ve just received my first batch of Febu so I anticipate that this will bring forth something else amazing. This whole laundry journey has been a wild ride!

Thank y’all for being the laundry weirdos I never knew I needed. My kid is side eying the shelf of laundry products and is likely concerned for my mental health at this point but his previously gross socks and yuck athletic wear is clean and smelling good so he’s not asking questions 🤣

I've got a lot happening in my life that's beyond my control, but thanks to this sub I've made some awesome changes for the better in my laundry. Got a washed/dryed-in ink stain out of some jeans, and also got most of the yellowing out of a duvet cover via spa day. Thanks all you laundry gurus!

Aldi Free & Clear - Formulacide

Post image

After more than a year of $8 wonder jugs of quality formula with lipase, the dreaded straight handle jugs formula without lipase and including optical brightener has landed at my local Aldi.

I have two good jugs left but I am officially in mourning...

How often do you laundry?

My husband and I (it’s only the two of us) both work from home and we only do laundry once every two weeks (outside of towels and sheets). Do you think this is normal?

Cleaning microfiber rags

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hey ya’ll! I’m a house cleaner but not that good with laundry. I have a bunch of microfiber rags that I clean on a weekly basis and need some help getting them refreshed. Of course I use it to clean everything: dust, oils, sticky messes, toilets, etc. and have to wash it in cold water which doesn’t break down the grease and oils very well.

I currently wash with just tide free and gentle. I’ve tried it with oxyclean as an additive but don’t seam to make much of a difference.

Please educate me!

tide evo appreciation post

i absolutely love tide evo. they are a bit expensive but sam’s club is running a 66 for $19.98 sale which i feel is really reasonable. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ For reference, I work a warehouse job so my clothes get moderately sweaty but not overly dirty or soiled. My partner works an office job. Our clothes aren’t super dirty or smelly. I throw one tile in with my clothes and use with warm water. I have zero issues with the tile dissolving and my clothes come out smelling clean. Leaves no extra residue. I wish there were some way to split the tile in halves if needed without having to cut it but I usually have all medium loads so it’s not a terrible inconvenience. They are incredibly easy to use though and it takes out the guesswork of having to dose liquids or powder. I’ve been using these for about 2 months or so and I’m pleased. I stocked up on a Free and Gentle box last week and just bought a giant box from Sam’s today and as long as Tide keeps them, I will most likely keep using them. My main hope is that eventually they will bring more scents (Hygienic Clean, Sport, Botanical Rain, Ocean Mist), etc. But, their current scent options are perfectly fine. I do also wish they were a bit cheaper but I feel like a 66pk for 20 bucks can’t be beat and will most likely last me all of next year.

How do I get rid of that "dude funk" in the laundry?

Whenever I wash my clothes with my boyfriend's, they get this sort of slightly sour dude funk smell. I've pointed it out to him and he agrees he wishes it wasn't in his clothes either. Does anyone know what it is, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it in the future? If it helps, he uses a laundromat and the provided box of tide laundry detergent.

Thank you in advance! :))

Is a spa day still mostly effective if I can’t keep the soak water warm?

Looking at the spa day instructions but I don’t have a cooler only a plastic tub so I don’t think I can keep the water a consistent heat. I could try boiling water in a kettle periodically but since it’s enzymes that might backfire?

Looking for top loader best practices

This sub has fully converted me to most of the methods preached here. Now using F&G tide odor refresh liquid, febu, and citric acid in the fabric softener dispenser and loving the results. Problem is, that recipe worked flawlessly in my parents lg front loader, but isn’t performing the same in our brand new ge top loader at our new house. This machine is brand new, literally delivered two days ago so I’m not dealing with scrud or any former tenants’ bad habits. Even still, the results are not the same. It seems to be oversudsing and having a hard time rinsing the detergent even if I only fill to line 1 for a medium size load. I’m not noticing any of the nice effects from the febu or citric acid either, our clothes used to smell perfectly like nothing, just CLEAN, but now seem different idk.
This is my first time using a top loader with agitator ever so hoping the experts here can point me in the right direction and bring back the joy I felt when I first converted to all the methods suggested here!!! TIA.

How to get out "grease" easily?

This might be TMI but I feel like the context is important. My partner has very greasy skin. Within 20 minutes of a shower its already back. Our sheets and our bed on his side are stained. The bed- I don't care that much. But I want to get the stains out of our sheets. Im hoping for a pre-soak or laundry additive, putting a paste over 6 feet of bed weekly would be challenging. Any advice would be appreciated.

Benefit of dry cleaning?

I just started an office job. I get my pants dry cleaned as some require them and it’s nice to not have to press them myself.

As for shirts—what’s the difference between washing on cold delicate and air drying vs dry cleaning? Why pay the money to dry clean when I can just clean and iron them myself?

Fresh and Gentle vs Free and Gentle

Is the Tide “fresh and gentle” as good as the Tide “free and gentle?” I personally enjoy fragrance, but keep seeing that the free and gentle is the holy grail haha. Help a laundry newbie out.

Enzyme additives?

Hi. I’m wondering what everyone’s favorite thing to add to their laundry with enzymes and stuff is. I have BioKleen, Lume, Puracy, and a few others.

Please help me. I need to deep clean.

My family is still sleeping. There was a horrible act of violence at a school a couple of miles from my house on Friday. I’ve been spending so much time helping to keep my family afloat since then, I haven’t had to pay attention to anything else. The house is so quiet. Now I’m saaadddd. So….. I’m wanting to focus on cleaning.

Best use of All Free and Clear liquid

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I know that All Free and clear is a very poor detergent (relatively speaking) but I have a decent size jug of it and I can’t stand wasting things. Any thoughts on a good use for it? I was thinking about just putting it in a spray bottle and using it as stain/pre-treatment?

One other thought was to just use it at 50% alongside my usual much better detergent regime (tide w/ dirty land).

Not so sure about Tide powdered laundry detergent.

A bit of background.

Using a Whirlpool Cabrio top load washer with auto sensing for water load. (Silver ball looking thing in the middle of where there would usually be an agitator arm.)

Live in the city. No hard water.

Wife and I decided to go all in on Tide. We usually use the liquid detergent, but I picked up pods and powder just to switch things up.

As I stand here watching the washer- I don’t see anything indicating my clothes are actually being washed in detergent.

Put in a small scoop directly into the wash tub, added clothes, and the washer does the rest. (Washing in cold water for this load.)

Washer does this routine where is sprays and spins the clothes and spins them around for the first 7-8 mins. Tub fills with water and the agitator takes over. In this case, a small, bordering on medium load.

No suds, nada. If I didn’t know better, it looks like my clothes are literally just being swished around in water.

Machine is about 10 years old. No issues with the machine. My experience with liquid detergent is suds.

Am I missing something here? I’d take a photo but the reflection with the ceiling light is awful.

Any harm in adding Tyler detergent for fragrance only?

I’ve been using Ginger Lily Farms unscented liquid (along with occasional use of Febu and citric acid) but sometimes I like to have some fragrance. I know Tyler candle company laundry detergent isn’t great as a detergent, but is there any harm in mixing a small amount just for the fragrance? I’m unsure if there are any chemical reactions where something is being cancelled out, causing a negative reaction etc.

Scent suggestions?

I’m really triggered by scents so I use tide free and gentle. But I also hate it when I cannot tell if my laundry is clean. I want to be able to smell that they are clean as “evidence”. But I know if I use something scented I’ll be forever attaching that smell to memories I have in one place, which I do not particularly enjoy.

Anyways, I think I would prefer something tangy and fresh, not sweet/floral/soft at all. Think…Aesop.I did not like downy folia (not a fan of eucalyptus).

Anyways, maybe I’ll just stick to f&g.

For the laundry history nerds: how Japan did laundry in the 1900s

I stumbled across this deep dive article on how laundry was done in Japan at the turn of the 20th century and thought this sub might find it interesting - I certainly felt quite grateful to own a modern washing machine and easy care clothing after reading it!
