Okay new to trying to be the best laundry person lol- here is what I have bought so far. I did find that my first time using the powder in my front load that I had some residual powder on clothes after they came out of dryer. I use the down rinse in the fabric softener slot- how do I use the FEBU or citric acid? Anything else I need?

Reminder that you don’t need to do Everything to have cleaner clothes.

I found this sub this summer. I switched from Charlies Soap to Tide, adjusted the amount for trace suds, added citric acid instead of vinegar to the rinse (sometimes) and then kept doing my laundry like usual.

Clothes got cleaner, wash by wash. No overnight miracles but definitely improvements.

Now its cooling off and I’m getting out the warmer clothes and bedding that hasn’t gotten any Tide washes and oh my goodness some of these things have a long way to go.

The regular wash cycles will catch them up, but I am tempted to do a spa day on some of it for a quick fix.

Has anyone tried Suavitel Rinse, and if so how does it compare to Downy/Tide Rinse. Would love to hear your feedback seeing how inexpensive suavitel is compared to downy/tide rinse.

I live in Ottawa, Canada and was looking for Compliments detergent at Freshco (the one from the lipase detergent google sheet). This is the bottle I found and wanted to ask if it’s the same one as described in the list. Thanks

Added Febu - had eczematic / contact derm flare. Now trying to problem solve

• Upvotes

I am the lifelong queen of sensitive skin and, after patch testing, learned that I am allergic to all fragrance. I used to use All Free and Clear pods until I learned from this subreddit that they don't actually, well, work.

I hesitated to trial Tide Free & Gentle because years ago ended up with some really bad contact dermatitis but there were lots of sensitive skin advocates here, so I finished out my All pods and transitioned to Tide a month or two ago.

I didn't seem to be reacting to the F&G pods and have stayed with them. This past week, I added Febu to the wash. Long time listener, first time caller. One scoop into the drum over the course of 2-3 loads of laundry. I didn't think anything of it but then started to rub at my eyelids and had areas of irritation on my neck - these are the telltale signs for me of exposure to a skin irritant (my derm explained that that's because they're the most sensitive parts of our skin - makes sense, right?) and Febu was the only recent change to point fingers at.

I did some more reading here and it seems that it could be a rinse issue - I have a front loading HE LQ ThinQ and typically do a single rinse so added an extra rinse to the cycle today (and re-washed the pillow cases, towels, etc from the last load) and added a tsp of citric acid to the fabric softener slot (no Febu).

We'll see what happens but I was curious if anyone else had thoughts about the above, mainly - its likely Febu but worth pushing through with an extra rinse? Should I be using citric acid each cycle to mitigate? Other things I haven't considered? Many thank yous as always in advance.

Having problems with musk.

• Upvotes

Good morning, evening and night.

I come to you confused and frustrated. I have a whirlpool 4.5 cu ft washer and 7.0 cu ft dryer. Im having an issue with musty smelling pants and shirts.

Im a equipment operator and HD mechanic so my clothes do get out threw the ring. Pants are 99% cotton and shirts for almost all of my closet is 100 cotton or wool.

Im using the tide pods that you get at Costco as well as gain beeds with borax as needed but my clothes lack that clean smell and or feeling. What am I doing wrong?

First Time Using The “Laundry Stripping” Method Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
85 Upvotes

***Edit: Spoiler Alert: Soup photos at the end!***

I’m going to preface this by saying I am by no means a laundry expert, I just wanted to try the laundry stripping method. I will also add that there was a yellow, orange, and baby blue towel in this mix with white, tan and beige-ish coloured towels, which could explain the greenish colour. I currently have them in the washing machine (with no detergent or laundry softener). I’m excited to see how they feel out of the dryer!

I used this recipe from GoCleanCo minus the Calgon water softener because I couldn’t find it lol:

NEED:
- 2 cups (or use the scoop that comes in the box) of Tide® Powdered Laundry Detergent
- ¼ cup of Borax® Laundry Detergent and Booster
- ¼ cup Arm & Hammer® So Clean Super Washing Soda
- ¼ cup Calgon® Water Liquid Softener

HOW TO TACKLE:

- Fill a bathtub half full with water - as hot as possible!
NOTE: More clothes - more water in the tub.
- Add CLEAN sorted, like-colored clothes or bedding
- Add in the mixture: stir until it dissolves
- Let soak for 4 hours
- Stir once every hour
- Drain the tub and wring clothes out. Transport to the washing machine (use a bucket so you don't drip everywhere!)
- Run a full cycle - DO NOT add soap or fabric softener (there is already plenty of soap in the clothes)

First photo: After stirring the first hour
Second photo: Second hour
Third photo: Third hour
Fourth photo: Right before I took the towels out
Fifth photo: The after with no overhead light
Sixth photo: The after with overhead light

Why does this keep happening to my white shirts?

I started noticing that all of my white shirts get this weird brown streak after washing and drying. They fade a little but never wash out and it’s completely ruined many shirts :( What is it? Can I get it out? And how can I avoid this in the future?

Tide Ultra Oxi Boost vs Tide Ultra Oxi

Hi Everyone! I had been using Tide Ultra Oxi Boost purchased from Amazon and just switched over to a box of Tide Ultra Oxi purchased at Costco. I don’t have either box anymore and the Costco app isn’t showing the ingredients but I was wondering if there was a formula difference in these two. I didn’t have any issues with the Amazon Oxi Boost but my newborn seems to be having a reaction to the Costco version. I was hoping someone could help explain what the difference may be? I appreciate the help!

ETA: The comment was deleted, but asked about types of products, both are powders!

Why is Tide supposedly better than All or Purex?

I have tried all 3 of these brands' free and clear type detergents and I can't really tell the difference. I usually use cold water. Usually it's fine but none of them get the stink out of my towels.

Washer full of black mold, landlord hesitant to replace machine

Thumbnail gallery
305 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
My wife and I just moved into a new house, and as part of the lease, the washer and dryer were considered to be “gifts” that we are responsible for should any repairs come up. Well, we discovered loads of black mold not only all over the door seal, but inside of the detergent slot. Our property management maintenance guy is hesitating because the machines belong to the house owner, but per our lease, we should just be able to toss those duds and bring in whatever machines we desire.
The reason he is hesitant is mostly due to the lack of a spot to store them. But this seems like a safety issue and not really an option for us to not have working laundry. My whole point of all of this is to ask, is there a simple way to clean out the machine from all of this neglect? Is it even worth the time to try and clean it out? It’s pretty gross and hoping to either fix this ourselves or just push even harder on replacing them. Any help would be great, thank you!

Liquid detergent I don't like

Is it poor form to leave some laundry detergent I don't like at the laundromat for someone who may want/need it?

Which liquid to use?

I am using all free and clear. I know I know - bad choice. I switched to that a few years back after having an allergic reaction to tide post covid. I had never had an issue before. I'm willing to try Tide again. I suspect it was a temporary thing.

I have a front load. I'm am currently using the downy rinse and refresh. I like it. I have the FEBU stuff in my Amazon cart. I went to the Lipase spreadsheet and there isn't a tide liquid on there. So I assume if I use a liquid I need to use the FEBU? What's the best liquid to use in my situation? As another poster mentioned, I'm just doing a switch without a spa day. Just going to keep on washing and see where I end up. Thanks so much!

How to Best Wash/Dry Synthetic Fuzzy Items

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

My daughter has multiple pillowcases and blankets in this synthetic "fur." If I wash them with any other garments, the other garments get tiny white fibers all over them. Washing them by themselves is still a PITA, bc I have to run a tiny load and they leave those fibers all over the inside of the washer and dryer.

Is there any way to minimize the stress when cleaning and drying stuff like this?

Is this ruined?

The fuse went in my washing machine and it was locked shut for 2 whole weeks. This sweater was trapped in it and when i managed to get it open, it had these weird pink stains on... Is there anyway I can remove the stains now, a few months on? Or is dying it the best option?

I'm a bit stuck as it is very sentimental as I purchased it for my son when he was still in my stomach and he wore it every month until now where he wears it regularly.. yes, with the pink stains.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Washing a jacket that is No Longer Washable

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello again laundry friends. I'm in desperate need of your wisdom here.

I'm going to a convention this weekend, where the average weather is going to be 80's and humid. And for some unknown portion of the convention (I'll be volunteering for about half of it, and regular attending for the other half) I'll be wearing this jacket. It's a heavy, long-sleeve denim jacket. (I'm a new england girl, so t the time, it seemed smart to opt for long sleeve)

When I got it, it seemed like a brilliant idea to have beloved actors sign the back. The issue now is, I can't wash it. Some of the signatures are sharpie alcohol, some are posca paint, some are sharpie oil paint, and some are unknown. To dogpile, I don't remember which is which.

My biggest concern is washing the armpits, but I also want to be able to clean the whole jacket because I know I'm gonna be a sweaty gal come the end of the convention. I know I cannot safely machine-wash the jacket without risking signatures, but I'm also afraid of washing it by hand with regular detergent.
I know I'm asking for a miracle here, but can anyone recommend a way to safely wash a.the pits, and b.how to delicately wash the jacket as a whole?

Help! Moths?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

For a while now, we’ve been finding these holes in both T-shirts and sheets… it looks like a hole with a scorched edge around it. It happens rarely and mostly with the sheets, but it ruins our clothes 😔

What could it be? I checked the washing machine and don’t think anything is caught in it.

Could they be moths? It seems strange to me, though, that there are those “yellow” spots and that the holes also have that scorched look… plus, so far I’ve only seen them in the sheets, which are the only items we wash periodically at 60 degrees…

Liquid detergent help

• Upvotes

A few years ago I went on vacation and used the house’s detergent to wash my clothes. I ended up loving the scent but never looked to see what brand/kind it was. All I remember was it was a blue liquid in one of those large jugs with a red knob button to dispense the detergent. I believe the jug color was yellow or some variation there of. I have already tried Tide simply daybreak fresh but that isn’t quite it. The smell is not fruity, and the scent does seem to stay on the clothes for some time. Anyone have any ideas?

Help! What causing these black streaks on my white sheets?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Recently I have been noticing these black marks on my white sheets. I cannot figure out for the life of me what’s causing them.

Here’s some background info:
- washing machine is 4 months old (an LG large with the center agitator)
- for these sheets I use Biz, Tide powder Oxy and Downy rinse and refresh as well as some scent beads
- I’ve wiped our the machine before and after loads looking for the black smudges and find nothing
- I’ve run a clean cycle with the Tide washing machine cleaner
- I inspected my dryer (also new) and there are no scorch marks in it
- the sheets come out of the washing machine with the marks and I can’t get them off with any stain remover.

It’s driving me batty! Am I missing something? Where are these marks coming from? I have white towels and have no issue - same for my whites and lights loads.

Thanks!

I seriously don't know how I'm supposed to use this. No manual shows the bottom and every video I see has a valve on the back. This only has a drain. The water just goes down and it didn't come with anything to stop it.

yellow stains from storage in closet

hi everyone,

long time lurker, first time poster. curious if anyone is familiar with how to get rid of these stains (if at all)

I found this at the back of my closet and haven’t worn it for more than a decade, so I’m pretty sure it’s not body oils.

I am also located in a very humid country if there is a possibility it could be mold?

TIA!
