Real Estate law Purchased my home 2 years ago and now this where do I stand

Bought a home over 2 years ago , 6 months ago my front door was knocked on at 7pm. It was the guy who rents/farms the field next door, said our septic was leaking into field, he said i needed to do this and do that, I disregarded as we had a septic "inspection" the renter of the field called health department and long story short they determined a lateral of mine is tied into a field tile in the field over a 1000 feet from property line. And now we have to get everything up to code. What can I do? I did not do this , this was done before I was born as I looked into it and at one point a previous owner owned my property/the farmland and the farmhouse across from us. I am just trying to be a home owner and hit with this. Where do i stand, what can i do? The health department is making me out to be the culprit and blaming me. Thanks LOCATION: midwes usa illinois

Employment Law My boss is telling me to pay him back after firing me.

1.4k Upvotes

A couple months ago, I was fired from my job, I was getting ready to move in to a new house with some of my close friends, to make bills and living cheaper on all of us. My old boss knew I was moving into a new home, and decided that he would give me and extra $1000 for moving expenses, I didn’t sign anything for the extra money nor did I make any deals for that 1000.

A couple months later he texts me out of the blue asking if I filed for unemployment, which I did. Then he proceeds to pressure me into stop filing for it because he thought the 1000 dollars would be enough for me to hold myself off until I found a new job. Of course I told him it’s impossible for me to do such while I’m still searching for a job, as well as paying for groceries and bills.

Finally he tells me I either pay him back and keep my unemployment, or I take myself off of said unemployment. I haven’t texted him back and wanted to seek advice about the legal ramifications about all of this before anything. Any and all information helps! Thank you!

Location: Virginia

UPDATE: I appreciate all of the messages and information you guys have all shared and I took A LOT of it into consideration, so thank you all so much! I’ll be sure to update if anything new happens.
I left one final message regarding my choice to continue my unemployment, as well as reminding him that there was nothing on paper or recording of me agreeing to any deal about me not going on unemployment, as that was never even a topic when I was fired from my position. I let him know that any further communication on the matter will be considered harassment.
When I was officially fired, he gave my final check as well as a separate check for $1k because he wanted to “help me out” I can tell that’s not the case now. And then I proceeded with my unemployment application a couple days afterwards.
That place was always shady, and being there for 5 years straight can’t say I’m really surprised this is happening.

My employer wants me to sign safety records from before I even worked there

Location: Ohio

I work at a small food packaging plant. We recently had a safety inspection and management has been trying to get everyone's training paperwork in order.

My supervisor handed me several forms confirming I'd completed machine safety training earlier this year. Problem is two of those forms have dates from before I was even hired.

I told her I'd sign for training I actually attended, but not something that never happened. She got annoyed and told me I was making a simple thing difficult.

Yesterday I noticed all my shifts for next week were removed. When I asked why, she texted that I couldn't return until my employee file was complete.

I have pictures of the forms and the messages. Is this something I can report as retaliation, or can they legally take me off the schedule for refusing to sign?

Business Law I own 50% of a business, but my partner won't allow me to hire an employee even if I’m willing to pay out of my pocket. What are my legal rights? (California)

I’m a 50% owner of a coffee shop in California, structured as a general partnership. My business partner and I have spent years building this business, and I’ve invested a significant amount of time, effort, and money into making it successful.
We currently split the days we operate the business.
I would like to hire an employee to cover my designated shifts so I don’t have to physically work at the business every day. I’m willing to pay the employee’s wages, payroll taxes, and associated expenses entirely out of my own portion of the profits.
However, my business partner refuses to allow me to hire anyone.
He has also told me that I either need to continue physically working at the business because “this is America,” or sell my 50% ownership to him.
I don’t want to sell. I’ve worked incredibly hard for years to build this business, and I believe I should be able to retain my ownership while finding a reasonable staffing arrangement.
I’m not trying to avoid my financial responsibilities or leave him with additional work. I simply want to hire someone to handle my shifts at my own expense.
My questions are:
Can my business partner legally force me to sell my ownership because I no longer want to personally work my shifts?
Does being a 50% owner mean I’m legally required to physically work at the business?
Can he prevent me from hiring an employee if I’m covering all the costs from my own share?
What rights do I have if we’re at a 50/50 deadlock?
What kind of attorney should I consult to protect my ownership and negotiate a fair management agreement?
I’m looking for guidance on how to protect my investment and ownership without escalating the conflict unnecessarily. I would appreciate advice from anyone familiar with California partnership law or who has experienced a similar situation.

Other Civil Matters Neighbors dog has been at our house for 3 months straight and had puppies here 3 weeks ago. Do I have any legal rights to them? Mississippi

Location: Mississippi: My family and I moved to Mississippi over a year ago. Our neighbors have a dog they let free roam, she started coming to our house and refusing to leave. She would occasionally go back to their house for a few minutes at a time, maybe once or twice a week just to greet them, but they ignored her so she stopped even doing that. For the most part, she's been at our house nearly 24/7 for at least a year.

We're very attached to her, and she is to us as well. Recently she got pregnant again because her owners refused to let me get her spayed, even though I offered to take her, pay for everything myself and take care of her afterwards. They claimed they would take her to be spayed but they never did.

When she went into heat, I had to lock her outside of our house and gate to prevent her and my male dog from breeding (he can't be neutered yet due to health issues, he's a rescue). She stayed outside of our gate whining to get inside. It was making my male dog physically sick from the stress of wanting to get outside to her. We eventually had to leave the state and spend a week and a half staying with family until her heat cycle ended. During that time, my uncle, who lives with us, told me she slept on our porch on the dog beds, and he fed her while we were gone and he said she never went home.

There have been several times when she needed medical attention, and her owners did nothing. At one point, she was sick for a week, she wasn't eating or drinking. I took care of her because her owners ignored me when I contacted them about how she was feeling. Later, she hurt her shoulder and limped for like four months. I told her owners about the limp and she acknowledged it and she told me they were "monitoring her." Meanwhile, she continued spending nearly 24 hours a day at our house.

About four months ago, I texted the owner and explained how much the dog means to us, how much we love her, and how we wanted to keep her and get her properly vetted. For some reason, that seemed to make the owner even more annoyed and spiteful toward me. I eventually dropped the subject because I didn't want to start a conflict and hurt the dog some how. Ever since then, she's been hostile towards me. She comes across as a very mean and spiteful person to begin with.

Recently, the dog got pregnant again, and throughout her entire pregnancy, she stayed at our house and refused to go home at all. When she was getting ready to have the puppies, I let her outside because she wanted to go onto our porch and I contacted the neighbors to let them know what was happening. I wanted to give them the opportunity to come and get their dog before she went into labor.

Their responses were dismissive. The owner responded with short messages like "nope, haven't seen her" and "haha,". or "hope she doesn't have too many puppies." She ended up having them inside our house, I made her up a place because apparently they were not coming to get her. I sent the owner pictures and updates while she was having puppies, but she continued responding with short, dismissive texts or not at all.

That was three weeks ago. Since then, the owner has sent only one text saying something about coming to see the puppies. Every other message has been from me, updating her about what's going on. I also asked what they planned to do with the puppies, and she told me I could give them away because that's what they planned to do anyway.

A few weeks ago, we had a hurricane near our area. We saw the owners at a local store in town, and they told us they planned to leave for the hurricane, they were going to go three hours away (one way) 6 hours total. The storm wasn't even expected to be bad where we live, so we decided to stay home, all we got was a little rain and wind anyway.

While at the store, prior to the hurricane, the owners told us they were going to come get the mother dog and her puppies and take them with them, which would have meant a three-hour drive each way with puppies who were only about three days old and have them stay in a hotel room. On the day the hurricane was supposed to hit, the owner texted me and asked if we were leaving. I told her we weren't, and she asked if the dog could stay with me. Of course, I said yes.

The mother and puppies have been with us ever since as well, and it's now been almost three weeks. I feed the mother every day, she sleeps inside my house, I bathe her, and I take her on walks. I've been taking care of the puppies as well. I've also been taking timestamped pictures and videos to prove all of this. I even had a livestream of the puppies running for a few days to show that they were here 24.7.

This dog has spent nearly a year at our house, almost all day, she has now been staying with us continuously for about three months, and her puppies have been here since birth, 3 weeks ago.

Some background about these people that has me extremely worried about what could happen if the dog goes back to them.

According to other neighbors, they don't take proper care of their animals. They have a bloodhound who has been chained up at their property for five or six years. She keeps getting pregnant, and the last time she had puppies, the owners shot and killed four of the puppies because they chased their chickens.

A neighbor who is friends with both me and the dog's owners, told me that she was visiting the owners one day back when the dog would go back and forth between our homes, the dog chased their chickens, according to my neighbor, the female owner started beating the dog with a stick, kicking her in the stomach, and punching her in the head.

The problem is that we live in a rural area of Mississippi where we don't have animal control. The female owner used to work for the sheriff's office and still has connections there. Other people told me that they have reportedly tried to get something done about these owners and their animals in the past, but the sheriff's office refused to do anything.

I'm really worried about what will happen if they decide they want the dog back. I'm really worried they might decide to chain her up like their other dog.

Another thing, my family and I are thinking about moving in six months or so, and I'm trying to figure out what my options are before then. If we move, I would love to take her with us, but I don't know whether I have any legal rights to her or whether I could get into trouble for taking her?

I have timestamped photographs, videos, witnesses and text messages showing how long she has been staying with us and the care I've provided. I also have text messages showing that I contacted the owners about her health, offered to pay to have her spayed, updated them throughout her pregnancy, and agreed to keep her and the puppies when they asked me to during the hurricane.

Do I have any chance of legally keeping this dog? Is there anything I can do now to establish ownership or protect her legally so if we move states I can take her with us? What would happen if the owners showed up tomorrow and wanted to take her and the puppies back? Would I have any legal grounds to do anything about it?

I really love this dog, and I want to give her a safe home so I'm playing nice for now, so she doesn't suffer at the end of the day.

What are my actual legal options in a situation like this? If any?

Coworker stole debit card info and spent over $700 USD, evidence is on camera.

Location: NYC.
Noticed on my bank app there's been some purchases that I had not done on Sunday, so I called my bank to close my debit card and ask for a new one. They said they could not refund me because the payments were still pending, and to call back once they went through to open a case and a refund request.
I leave my bag in the work area right next to a camera just to be sure, and it caught one of my coworkers on Friday fiddling around my bag and taking pictures of my debit card after they took it out of my wallet. I spoke to my manager and sent him the videos, he said we'd be contacting the police about it tomorrow.

I would like advice on what to do moving forward? How should I proceed with the Bank and the Police? What should I expect from similar cases like this?

Thanks for the help!

My ex fiancée wants a protective order

Location: Indiana US
Ok reddit, so last weekend I was served paperwork stating that my ex fiancée is taking me to court for a protection order.

Backstory information: Me and her ended up having an ugly breakup after 4 years. This was 3 weeks ago now when she packed her things and left the house snd moved back with her parents. She has been back to the house three times since to collect more of her belongings. First two times I was there, third time I wasn’t. Both two times I was there we ended up taking a lot and even being intimate. The third time i wasnt she also took a bunch of my belongings. As far as the house goes the mortgage is in her name so technically i am living in her house now and she is effectively my landlord. There has been almost no contact since she left the first time.

Now honestly, I dont want anything to do with her anymore but I do want my belongings back. So as far as the protection order stopping me from contacting her i have no problem with. But i need to sue her for my belongings as well as she has all the information for the bills in her name so I cant pay or see what that status of them are. she has no job so i know its not just getting paid.

I also want to add that there was never a case of violence at any point during our relationship, even since it ended it never got violent.

So, is there anything I can or should do? Currently still live at the house, haven’t received an eviction yet. If she does “win” how does that affect me. I will be answering questions all day so please ask and send your advice.

Court is friday this week.

Can an employer legally tell you that you cannot be friends with or see coworkers outside of work?

I am employed in the state of Georgia by a retail employer that is based in California. My company is trying to say it is policy that we cannot have friendships with or have any interaction with our coworkers outside of work. Can they legally do this? For some basic policies it seems like they go based on California laws but others seem to go by the state in which the individual store is. It’s like whichever suits their needs better that’s what they go by 🙄 I have scoured our “handbook” and cannot find anything about this policy but yet our district manager keeps reiterating it so I’m beginning to wonder if it’s even legal for them to say this in either state.

Business Law An Arizona web domain provider seized all my domains, suspended, and locked my account because of a 'routine check' after I didn't reply in 72 hours with my ID to a single email.

I have been with them for 12 years, never once this had happened before. No domain is used for any illegal purpose, and not even marginally illegal, they are just boring business. I had one forum but it's been disabled for almost 14 years. All my domains so far are renewals, I hadn't logged in to my account in almost 20 days before the incident, and didn't make any changes or charge-backs or anything.

They sent me a single email, which I didn't notice on time, then proceeded to suspend everything and lock me out of my account. The lockdown happened this Friday (16th). I noticed and went to chat with them, they refused to provide any further details and mentioned I needed to contact through email, even after I explained what they just did disabled my server completely. Just went full cop mode 'we'll contact you' but never provided any straight reason, justification, evidence, nor anything, and haven't provided any detail to this date. They just said I was breaching their ToS. The only info I have is mentioned as I breaching the "Accounts, Accurate Information, Transfer of Data Abroad" of their ToS.

What they disabled with this, besides my domains was my main hostname, which links everything together so my server and the service to all my clients. Everything went offline, like 50 business, because of this.

I submitted an old ID first the very same Friday (I freaked out and thought it was a scam or a hack), but they told me it wasn't valid so I sent a new one that day. Since then they haven't given any other answer except "we'll contact you", it's been 72 hours since then.

My clients are furious, they have a lot of problems with logistics, government, tax offices, customs, etc. and are pressuring me constantly to get it fixed. I have been not great with the stress but I'm managing it.

I don't know what to do, since I'm in another country right now and can't travel to the USA to deal with it, and also don't have the money to pay for a lawyer.

I don't know if ICANN will look into this and how much time it'll take and if my domains will stay locked longer because of it.

The company is aware I'm being public about it and was warned several times about it, I've ranted at them, leashed out and told them I'd get this to be very public, since I don't have any other tool.

I don't really know what to do.

Wills Trusts and Estates [MI] Sister says Dad left no will or money, but I found records of accounts and life insurance

Location: Michigan, USA

My father died in April 2024 in Grand Rapids (Kent County), Michigan. He’d been living with my sister. I live abroad. He was divorced from my mother over 25 years ago and never remarried. My sister and I are his only children.

I flew back after he died. When I asked my sister about a will or the estate, she told me:

  • He had no will.
  • He had no money and had been living off her.
  • So nothing needed to be done legally besides paying for the cremation.

She also gave us a handwritten, signed letter he’d left for both of us. In it he says he leaves his “meagre earthly possessions” to us both. I don’t remember whether it was dated. She kept the letter.

At the time I was severely depressed and had recently been hospitalized, so I accepted what she said. The only things I signed were the crematorium authorizations. I signed nothing related to his estate.

Looking back, it didn’t add up. My father was extremely careful with money and kept detailed financial records of everything in his life. My mother also says she’s sure he had a will.

Recently I found an old backup I made of his computer. It contains:

  • A financial document, last edited in 2010, showing about $126,000 in savings, including a Bank of America account (I have the account number), a Wells Fargo IRA, and a Western National annuity worth about $35,000. It also shows Social Security income.

  • A file titled “last letter,” addressed to my sister and me, saying “my inheritance is for you to split” and that he left a small life insurance policy for us, naming his agent.

I know the financial document is old. But he had almost no expenses while living with my sister (no car, no travel), so I find it hard to believe it was all gone by 2024.

I don’t know whether my sister had power of attorney or was a joint owner on any account. I haven’t raised any of this with her yet.

I’m unemployed, without stable housing, and can’t afford a lawyer.

Questions:

  • How do I find out whether an estate was opened in Kent County, or a will filed?
UPDATE - I contacted Kent County Probate, and was informed there were no filings for my Father's name. It seems no estate was ever opened for your father in Kent County.

  • Can I find out who the beneficiaries were on the IRA, annuity and life insurance, and whether they’ve been paid out?

  • If no estate was opened, should I open one myself? Can I do that from abroad?

  • What deadlines apply? He died April 2024.

  • Are there free or low-cost legal resources, or lawyers who’d take this on contingency?

Can I choose my own custody?

My dad is a narcissist. He denies me any medical care because he thinks, as a chiropractor that will fix everything, I have some sort of vaginal infection and my refused to let me go to a doctor. He claimed he would disown me if I went, and I told a teacher who mandate reported me. My principle called my dad saying if I’m denied medical care it’s neglect and he would have to call cps. My dad played along with it just to get very very mad at me and saying I cant go and then switching the story to how I have to go immediately. My mom is suing for medical custody since their current divorce agreement is they both have to agree before doing anything medicinal. My mom said to show my principal the texts between me and dad because it will help her get the mc if it is documented, but I just think he will find out and take it out on me. What do I do?

Wife Denied Entry To Concert Due to Disability

5.6k Upvotes

Location: Illinois

Yesterday my wife and I went to Hollywood Casino Aurora in Illinois for a concert and my wife who has an implanted defibrillator and pacemaker and cannot go through metal detectors or be wanded due to the complications it could cause to the hardware attached to her heart, was denied entry to the concert. We showed them her medical card that clearly states she can’t go through the metal detectors or be wanded but they kept trying to push the point and get her to allow them to wand her. Normally in these situations like when we go to the airport, sporting events, other concerts, the cruise we just went on, amusement parks, you name it, they always just pat her down before they let her in. In this case they refused to pat her down and said the only way she can come in is if she gets wanded or goes through a metal detector. I brought up the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it says they have to do an alternative method to allow her to enter but they claimed that the state gaming law supersedes federal law which I’ve never heard of before.

Is this something I should pursue legally? I whole heartedly believe what they did is discrimination to a handicapped person

Real Estate law [CA] Relative wants me to see a notary to "clear my name from the title" of a house I transferred to her via quitclaim deed, does this make any sense?

Location: California. My grandmother passed away in 2020 without a will. At this point I learned that in 2012 (which would've made me 7 years old) she put me and another (much older) relative on the deed to her house alongside her in lieu of a will, I guess. Once my grandma died this other relative immediately moved in, and has been living there since.

My relative has left the house in complete disrepair and hasn't paid any taxes or bills. Over the past two years she's been attempting to harass me into agreeing to a home equity loan, which I've been incredibly uncomfortable with for many reasons. This relative has a history of stealing from family members. She was putting me in a really tricky position so early this year, I decided to fill out a quitclaim deed. Several months prior I'd obtained a copy of the grant deed my grandma filled out, which I used for reference. My father (who used to work in real estate) instructed me to put my grandmother's name alongside my relative's on the new quitclaim deed since it was never removed from the deed once she passed.

I sent the forms via mail alongside a money order for the fee. It got rejected and sent back to me due to the fee amount I sent having been incorrect. I had a friend take it back to the Assessor-Recorder-Clerk's office in person so she could pay there, turns out the amount I sent initially was correct and it getting rejected the first time was an error on their part. My friend said it was being processed, in her words "They said it will take a few days for it to be public record or something."

I expected that to be the end of that, and said I'd effectively forfeited my stake in the property. Tonight my relative sent me this text message:

"Hi so they need to send a mobile notary to you for escrow I know you did the quit claim deed but some shit happened when the judge signed and he still gave the house to me and you . The mobile notary is to clear your name from the title not to get you on the loan

They need your contact info if you could send it to guysname@lendingcompany.com he can set up the notary to go to you"

Does this make any sense? I'm very hesitant about all of this since I wouldn't put manipulating me past her, but since she wants me to contact someone from the lending company she's working with I'm not sure. Sketchy either way, although the company seems legit from my very surface level research.

Personal Injury Dog bite - occupational - my wife was bit

Location: mid-atlantic

Summary version, my wife is a receptionist/assistant at a Vet clinic. This past summer she was bit by a clients dog, after the appointment had ended and they were getting ready to walk out.

Should mention, she was bit across the entire left side of her face, the dog was actively attached to her and trying to kill her, 30 stitches in her face right up to the bottom of her eye.

The owners were shocked and appalled, "he's never done this before", Well, he has, and he has a history we've since found out. This WAS preventable, the dog had an aggression history, and a muzzle would have prevented all of this. The dog was thankfully put down, but my wife is STRUGGLING with work now. She's not new to this, she's been working small and large animal for 15 years. She doesn't want to walk in the building, she doesn't want to see dogs, she can't walk in the exam room this all went down in.

We are NOT the litigious type, but this is a real problem affecting her career now. Finding out after the fact that the animal did have an aggressive history has been a tough pill to swallow.

My question - is this worth pursuing? I am truly concerned that this is having a very real negative effect on her ability to earn a living, which is certainly having the parallel of negatively impacting self-worth etc. (I absolutely do my part to encourage etc, to the point I've told her to quit so she doesn't have to deal with the psychological part, but my wife absolutely has to contribute, it's just how she is)

I am just very unsure what to do at this point.

Employment Law Terminated shortly after reporting a major safety and compliance issue

• Upvotes

Location: TX / OK US

I was just terminated.

June - reported out of compliance discovery to my supervisor, manager, and director via email.
July - had my work access locked out and sent a random screening. I noticed I couldn't access my emails so I contacted IT. Which unlocked my account and said that I had no logs or notes of why my account was locked. I have confirmation of this from IT. After getting into my email, I see the random screening. I believe they sent the random and blocked me from seeing it as missing or becoming a no-show would be a terminating offense.

I managed to get back into my email with enough time to take my random the next morning.

September, my supervisor appears in my area of operation for the first time ever, and the first time in the state I am working in. He drove over unannounced 8+ hours to surprise me and see what my day to day activities are.

The following day the director and my supervisor wanted to move me out of state and begin performing work 8+ hours away from my home. This is new. After 18 months, they want to drag me out of my state.

That day I reported them to STAA under OSHA.

I received my OSHA paperwork from the investigator on week 3 or Sept 2026. OSHA told me the employer would receive their notice of the investigation a day after I receive mine.

4 days later I was surprised by my supervisor, and handed paperwork. He told me to go home. He wouldn't say it was a termination, but wanted my laptop and electronic devices. The paperwork says its a confidential severance agreement. A few days later I was emailed from corporate with another notification that I have been terminated.

I did not sign it. Do I let the OSHA investigator know I was terminated?

Already damaged vehicle damaged further during an oil change

• Upvotes

Location: is US

I brought my truck in for an oil change. I had been in am accident last summer and my driver's door is still damaged from it. The damage is noticeable. The door still works but the window does not.

I've had the oil changed a couple of times with this damage already and didn't even think of it. This time they decided to roll my window down so they don't lock the keys inside. Of course they rolled down the window without even asking or bringing it up.

They broke it so badly somehow the window won't go back up. So now I'm lucky to have my window rigged shut which I had to do. Mind you all of my other windows work fine besides my driver's window.

They said they'd quote me to fix it. I get it was partially broken before but the window stayed up. Am I responsible for them breaking my window or should the shop be responsible to fix it?

Considering legal action against my children's daycare

• Upvotes

Location: Indiana, USA.

On Friday, 10/16, while driving my children home from their daycare, my daughter disclosed to me that while standing in front of a toy bin, playing with a toy, her teacher (which I will refer to as Teacher A) picked her up, set her down hard onto the floor, and then threw her own shoe at her. I was pretty shocked and told my daughter that I needed to speak with Teacher A about this, thinking it was likely embellished from her point of view, but she became so terrified, begging me not to talk to her teacher, that I pretty well believed her and decided to discuss this with my wife before taking any action. Over the course of the weekend, we questioned our daughter multiple times, and her story remained consistent: she was standing and playing with a toy when Teacher A picked her up without knowing her knowing why, and she was slammed to the floor hard enough for her shoe to pop off of her foot, at which point Teacher A picked up the shoe and threw it at her, striking her arm, bouncing off and then hitting her leg.

We asked if Teacher A was trying to get her attention and/or if she was ignoring Teacher A's instructions to put the toy away and sit down (obviously not an excuse to be picked up, slammed down, and have a shoe thrown at her), but she does not remember the teacher trying to get her attention at all. We asked if anything like this has ever happened before, and she said it has happened with other kids in her class, specifically naming two other boys. I don't know one of the boys or his parents, but I do know the mother of the other boy pretty well, so I reached out to her over the weekend to ask if she has ever heard anything like this from her son. She advised that she put in a complaint with the Assistant Director (AD) of the daycare "a couple of months ago," and was told it would be brought the the Director's attention, but she never heard anything back. It is important to note here that when the AD is not acting as the AD, she is usually the other teacher in our daughter's room, but never on a Friday as the Director is always out that day.

My wife is pretty good friends with our daughter's previous teacher, Teacher B, so they went back and forth several times over the weekend and what we learned is that there was another teacher in the room, Teacher C, who corroborated our daughter's story exactly to Teacher B at the end of the day on Friday.

My wife and I developed a game plan to confront the daycare director at drop off yesterday morning, but when we got there, we were informed by AD that the Director was still out on vacation and would be back on Tuesday (today). Feeling like this needed to be looked into immediately, I sent an email to the Director advising we had an urgent situation that needed to be looked into regarding the safety of our daughter - no specifics outlined. Knowing that she was still on vacation, I copied the owners of the daycare system (multiple locations) to ensure someone would see it and get back with me or my wife. They did, even though they are all on vacation for Fall Break as well, and the Director called me as she was getting ready to board her flight back home. I relayed the information to her, as well as what I knew about Teacher C allegedly being present and corroborating our daughter's story. I was assured that she would be looking into this first thing today and would interview all staff who might possibly have information regarding this, but at the same time, she stated that this seemed very out of character for Teacher A.

This morning at drop off, the Director and AD were at the front talking, and she informed my wife and I that she was just discussing this with AD, and they were both shocked (even though AD has already fielded a report of this nature). I left feeling a bit less confident that they are going to find merit to our daughter's allegation, or otherwise claim it is not provable and try to keep Teacher A in this classroom, whereas I feel, at minimum, this woman should be fired, if not lose her license and face legal repurcussions.

I guess my legal question is this: if the daycare does not pursue removing Teacher A, should I be contacting the police and/or CPS, and should my wife and I be seeking legal counsel to potentially sue the daycare for allowing this to happen? I am not a litigious person and have never been involved in anything like this. We also don't want the entire daycare shut down. We have overwhelmingly dealt with fantastic staff at this daycare and would hate for others to be put out or displaced by us taking legal action, but at the end of the day, our daughter's safety and wellbeing is our utmost concern.

Rental companies bank towed their car and left me stranded

Location: Miami/Broward

Hello, so I rented a car in Fort Lauderdale that seemed super cheap but when I got there I had to pay extra for insurance and other fees like a $150 security deposit. I needed the car so I just accepted it. I decided to rent from October 12-November 2. On Saturday October 17, I decided to go to a festival (iiipoints) in Miami. When exiting the festival I walked to where I had parked my car only to find it wasn’t there. I called the non-emergency police line and they had told me that the system says that the car was repossessed by the bank. I eventually had to get a taxi and thankfully had enough cash to get home. While on the phone the police told me it is not my responsibility to get the car back but the responsibility of the rental place because the car was taken from THEM not from me. After several calls I got an email from the rental company apologizing and offering me a new car. Unfortunately, I don’t want a new car anymore because I had such a bad experience already and spent a lot of money getting home and on Ubers for work. On top of everything I have a new $300 charge on my card from the rental company.

I think it’s important to say I signed a contract which in one line states the following:

“No Refund and Early Termination Policy:
NO REFUNDS will be issued for early termination of the rental. The renter understands and accepts that no refund will be issued if the vehicle is retumed earlier than the agreed rental period.”

Since in this case they are giving me another car that’s not listed in my rental agreement and I’m not returning the car early because it was TAKEN by their bank….

  1. Does anyone know what I can do?
  2. Will I be able to just decline the new car and get my money back for the remaining days?
  3. Are they allowed to give me a random charge of 300 without consulting me about it?
  4. Can I sue if they give me a hard time and try to force me to pay them for a service that has put me through such a dangerous, difficult and costly situation?
  5. Can I take ANY type of legal action at all?

These were the charges:
21 day rental: 98.28
SLI: 839.79
Total adjustments: 59.00
Taxes: 11.01
Surcharge: 42.00
Refundable security deposit: 150.00
Unknown charge: 300.00

PS: Sorry if this post is all over the place, I’ve been so stressed and upset about the whole situation.

Criminal Law Location: Texas. Should I take my (court appointed) lawyers advice and take a deferred deal or push for charges to be dropped entirely?

I have a clean record. No prior arrests or history of violence before this. My girlfriend has borderline / bipolar disorder. Last year she went off her meds and started a really bad cycle of drugs and alcohol. It culminated with me hiding all her bottles and drugs and her flipping out and breaking things in my house. I tried to stop her but she got increasingly violent. I admit that I had to defend myself but nothing more than holding her arms so she could no longer hit me and pushing her aside from the door when things had become too escalated for me to want to be present. She got a few extra punches in as i was leaving but I managed to get out. Apparently after I left she threw a vase through our front door window which caused the neighbor to call the police. When the police arrived she showed them marks on her arms where I was holding her and they also took pictures of her eyes (dark circles from binging coke and tequila for a weekend, no punches were thrown). She told me they come but didn’t think anything would come of it and I didn’t know she had accused me of anything. Months later I was arrested while driving home from work for a family violence warrant. She was with me. She begged and pleaded the cops to let me go and that she hadn’t been truthful but they took me to jail anyways. I lost my job over being arrested. For months no one believed me. Not even my lawyer I don’t think. And the best I was offered was 2 years probation or 40 days in jail. Last month she attacked me again. This time I managed to get it on video. My lawyer brought it to the DA and they offered me a differed sentence now. My lawyer says I should just take it. Is that really the best I can get or should I fight for a better outcome? I’m having an extremely hard time finding employment with a family violence arrest and am on the verge of being homeless / losing my vehicle due to this which makes me worried about taking any sort of probation and fucking it up. Is this really the best option for me or does them finally budging and offering me something better mean I should continue to fight this? I don’t want this lingering over me forever for something I didn’t do. Thanks for your help in advance

Hertz blames me for pre-existing damage that was documented at pickup, rental was two years ago in Illinois, $8,660 claim revived in 2026 and collections threatened.

Location: Illinois. The rental was at Chicago Midway Airport in August 2024.

What happened

  1. Aug 29 to Sep 2, 2024, Hertz rental. The first car assigned to me was a red 2022 Tesla Model 3. Rental charge was $559.44.
  2. At pickup, before the car left the lot, I filmed and photographed it. My video and photos are timestamped Aug 29, 2024, 4:55 pm, Chicago Garfield Ridge, and they show the car on the lot with a reduced acceleration and top speed warning on the screen. I exchanged the red Tesla and drove a black replacement Tesla for the rest of the rental.
  3. Hertz said in 2026 that the high voltage battery pack for the red Tesla was damaged and wants $8,660.34, which is $8,371 damage, $139.34 loss of use and a $150 admin fee. https://imgur.com/a/g5mzMMc
  4. The Tesla repair estimate in Hertz's own demand packet describes the problem in the same words, customer states alerts, drivability, acceleration and top speed reduced, performance may be restored on next drive. Hertz says the high voltage battery pack was damaged.

What I did

  1. Sep 15, 2026, after Hertz provided the claim with no explanation for the roughly two year gap, I sent the return video of the replacement car, denied liability again in writing, and copied Executive Customer Service and Customer Relations.
  2. Sep 23, 2026, I provided the pickup video and explained in writing that the warning in my pickup video is the same warning quoted in Hertz's repair bill and that it was present before delivery to me.
  3. Oct 9, 2026, after receiving a Sep 28 letter threatening referral to collections, I disputed the claim in full in writing.
  4. Oct 12, 2026, I filed a consumer complaint with the Illinois Attorney General, asking for cancellation of the full $8,660.34.

My questions

  1. Collections -- I know we can dispute the collections in 30 days -- but how does dispute verification work? Do I need to exaplain the story to dispute agency again?
  2. Liability. Under 625 ILCS 5/6-305.2, does Hertz have to show the damage happened during my rental period? I am glad I took those videos and photos two years ago and still kept them (thank you iCloud).
  3. Anything else I should be doing? Their customer service is not helping as well. I dont think they care about any complaints as there are already tons of them.

Question for anyone who has been in this situation. I’m legally married, but I do not want my husband listed on my baby’s birth certificate. I’m trying to understand what my options are in California and what steps I would need to take.

Custody Divorce and Family Trying to decide if I need a prenup

Location: Texas

I know that prenups are never a bad idea and I'm expecting most people here are going to advise me to get one, but my fiance is incredibly sensitive to the topic. She just can't get it out of her head that doing one is planning for an eventual divorce, so before I push further I want to just make sure my circumstances really necessitate it.

  • I have 2 kids from a prior marriage, a home worth ~$500k (which we will live in together), and about $2 million almost entirely in retirement accounts.
  • She has a home worth ~$250k (which will be rented out) and about $250k in retirement accounts.

It's my understanding that without a prenup, if we were to divorce then everything we each had prior to marriage gets classified as separate property and as long as there's clear documentation on what we each had then that shouldn't be open to dispute. I can set beneficiaries on my retirement accounts however I want to split things between kids and wife in the event of my death.

I'm OK with not overriding the default state laws on things like alimony (since Texas is not generous about awarding alimony anyway) and I'm OK with equally splitting all assets accumulated after marriage.

My question is, if I don't do a prenup, what risk am I taking on? It seems the default state laws accomplish what I need them to regarding pre-existing assets and assets accumulated post-marriage but I want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Ex wants his senior cat back eventually, but I’ve housed, funded, and cared for him for 8 months. Need advice on taking permanent ownership vs giving him a choice.

Location: Oregon

TL;DR: I agreed to foster my ex's 11yo cat for a few months after he lost his housing, but it's been 8 months and he won't be able to house him for another 1-2 years. I've covered all vet care and daily costs while my ex lives in a room where pets aren't allowed. After breaking up over a deeply unbalanced relationship marked by a 10+ year age gap, covert emotional abuse, and stonewalling, I'm torn between taking legal ownership of the cat to protect his well-being and my mental health, or giving my ex the choice to take him back even though it guarantees the cat goes into an unstable environment. I agreed to foster my ex's 11yo cat for a few months after he lost his apartment, but it's been 8 months and will likely be 1 to 2 years before he has a place of his own. I’ve paid for all his vet care, vaccinations, and daily needs while my ex lives in an under-the-table room where pets aren't allowed. We broke up last month after a deeply unbalanced 2-year relationship full of covert emotional abuse and extreme stonewalling. I am torn between taking legal ownership of the cat to protect his well-being and my mental health, or giving my ex the choice to take him back even though it guarantees the cat goes into a chaotic, unstable environment.

I need perspective on a situation with my ex and his cat because I am terrified of making the wrong choice or acting out of spite, even though my gut tells me I need to protect this animal and myself.

We met when I was barely out of my teens and he was in his early 30s. I had just come out of a bad relationship and was hesitant about the age gap, but he reassured me, brought up the power dynamic himself to put me at ease, and we bonded deeply over shared grief and creative interests. Eventually, we started dating. Shortly after, he hit a terrible patch in his life involving housing loss, legal trouble, job loss, severe depression, and family stress.

I stayed by his side through all of it. I cooked for him, cleaned his place, bought household necessities for him, helped him with errands, and loaned him money. He absolved himself of responsibility by telling me I was free to leave and that he didn't want to hold me back, but I loved him and stayed.

As time went on, covert patterns of isolation and control emerged. I eventually found out he had hidden our entire serious relationship from his close social group for months, and when I tried to address how much that hurt, he shut it down and accused me of being dramatic and unhealthy. At social events, he would introduce me as a friend or acquaintance so it wouldn't be awkward.

He also became obsessed with a time-consuming local hobby, spending over 20 hours a week on it, and asked me not to come around his regular spots because he didn't want people making comments about our age gap. When I made new friends my own age or went out for coffee with coworkers, he got sharp, suspicious, and made me feel so guilty that I stopped socializing while he excluded me from his own social life.

Whenever we had conflict, he shut it down instantly, told me to move on, or beat himself up so hard that I had to comfort him instead. Conflicts were never resolved. If I cried or expressed anxiety, he’d tell me to save my feelings for when they were useful or call my reactions unsustainable without offering any support. My sleep and mental health tanked from the constant unpredictability.

Eventually, I reached my absolute limit. After months of being stonewalled, cancelled on, and treated like an inconvenience, I snapped. He pointed at my reaction, said this was why he had been pulling away, and used it to justify distancing himself for weeks while insisting everything was fine. I finally forced an in-person talk and ended things. Post-breakup, he kept texting me crying about how hard it was, accusing me of moving on too fast, sending emotional songs, and dropping hints that we might get back together later. Interacting with him derails my mental health for days.

Eight months ago, my ex lost his housing and needed someone to foster his 11-year-old senior cat for 3 months while he couch-surfed. I checked with my roommates, and the cat moved in with me. Shortly after, my ex took an under-the-table room in a house for cheap rent, but the landlord is allergic to cats and strictly forbids pets. This meant the temporary foster agreement was blown up, and the cat was stuck living with me indefinitely.

The cat is 11 years old, fully settled, bonded with the resident pets, and thriving in my quiet home. My ex agreed to pay $100 a month for expenses while the cat was with me, but he stopped after a couple of months and I have paid for everything since. The cat was also overdue for basic medical care, and because my ex kept putting off scheduling the appointment, I booked it and paid several hundred dollars out of pocket. He eventually paid me back in small installments over a month and a half, but before this, he hadn't taken the cat to the vet in years, allowed him outside unvaxxed, and the microchip isn't even registered in my ex's name.

My ex has no stable housing timeline. He is in school full-time, working part-time, paying child support, relying on student aid, and about to wipe his savings to buy a used car. He has an eviction record, so it will realistically be 1 to 2 years before he could ever rent a pet-friendly place on his own, if ever.

I cannot stay tethered to him for years, allowing him visits or open communication just because of this cat, as interacting with him triggers severe anxiety and resets my healing. Furthermore, if I give him the cat back or give him the choice to take him, he will make an emotional, impulsive decision to take him, meaning a senior cat will be bounced around temporary spots, put in a facility, or forced into an unsafe living situation.

A family member thinks I should register the cat's microchip under my name, get pet insurance, and tell my ex or keep him blocked that the cat is permanently staying with me. Another family member is warning me that taking a cat without giving him a choice is wrong and out of character for me.

Part of me feels guilty because my ex genuinely loves this cat and he was a huge emotional support for him during hard times. But my ex operates purely on emotion and impulsivity, not logic or financial planning, and I don't think love is enough to care for a senior animal when you lack stability, safety, and vet care.

I am torn between giving him the choice to take the cat back, which respects his technical ownership but practically guarantees the cat goes into an unstable living situation while keeping me dragged through my ex's emotional wake, or taking legal ownership without giving him a choice, which protects the cat's health and my own mental peace, but feels aggressive, unilateral, and makes me feel guilty for taking his pet.

What is the right, objective thing to do here?

DUI Kentucky keeps forgetting to suspend my license

AIA if my post is not acceptable.

Location: Kentucky

Living location: Ohio

11/26/25 Last year I got a DUI in Kentucky. First offense, no previous record.

I served a day, made bail, got a lawyer, went home to ohio.

I did not take a breathyzer test, by Kentucky law my license is automatically suspended for 6 months.

It never happened. My license was still valid in both states through 2026.

Oct 5th'26 I pled guilty. My terms were court costs, 20h of alcohol awareness class, and since they never suspended my license, my license would be suspended for 6 months, within 48h of the proceeding. I could continue driving if I got an ignition lock.

I do not drink anymore period. I applied for the ignition lock but they rejected it as my license is still valid in both states.

I want to follow the law but Im not sure what to do. It appears I "slipped through the cracks" - judge, again.

People have told me Im doing the best to follow the terms. I check my license every day to see if its suspended but no luck.

I just ran a background check and I still don't see any records in Kentucky.

I texted the lawyer but no response yet.

Edit: Just got off the phone with the lawyer. They said do the classes regardless, but he confirmed the Judge never submitted the suspension order so it's up to me. Essentially I'd have to go back to court and ask them to suspend my license. He can't suggest a route one way or the other. can't say I enjoy being in the wind, but I suppose that's karma.

Sewer Backups and Municipal Immunity

Location: Iowa

Due to a main line sewer backup, me and 11 neighboring houses had our basements flooded with sewer water.

The city has already admitted, in writing, to the following:

‐ they admitted that a basketball and chunk of broken PVC pipe were found to have caused the sewer main backup

- they admitted that the sewer main access pipe at the end of the street was found to be broken

- they admitted that the broken pipe was the likely point of entry of the basketball

- they admitted that they have now repaired and buried that pipe to protect it following the incident, admitting that this pipe is theirs to maintain

The only point in dispute is the timeline. The city claims that this pipe was "recently broken." However, I have photographs showing that the pipe stood 2' tall when intact in 2021, and was reduced to a 6" tall shards off PVC in 2022.

We'll be filing municipal tort claim notices with the city, because we believe that the city was negligent in failing to repair the pipe. Is this case a slam dunk, or does the municipality have immunity to being sued over this?

Also, would an attorney be needed to file this notice, or would one only be needed for the actual litigation if a settlement isn't reached?
