Legit I've seen this particular art (and fanarts of it) on so many disco elysium media that I kinda just assumed it was from the game itself. It's kinda mind boggling to learn now that no, it's just a fanart. It's just that good.
That one's absolutely fantastic. The song choice is great and all the little snippets they animated just perfectly captures the vibe and essence of the game.
This is kagurabachi fanart that the author himself retweeted.
It’s called “I miss you”.
For context chihiro's (the one in black) dad (the one in white) is dead. He seemingly raised chihiro as a single father and despite having a very shitty childhood with an abusive family he gave chihiro a loving and caring home. Chihiro loves him so much that he went on a crusade to recover his master pieces so that no one can tarnish his name by using them. At one point chihiro even breaks down and cries at the thought that he may die not being able to achieve his goal
It’s really good fanart but I think it’s fitting for the series. It’s one of the most beautiful Mangas in production right now and the image is very fitting for the themes and style of the series.
Its actually really interesting how it came to be.
Long story short: people made edits of the garfield comics where the cat didnt talk, which made Jon's dialogue seem really surprisingly depressing. This manafested into a series of comics where Garfield is actually a manafestation of Jon's depression and insecurities. This then mutated further into a body horror called Gorefield, same idea, but now garfield is a monster on Jon's creation.
This comment reminds me of that part where someone said, "whoever decided September(7) is the 9th month, October(8) is the tenth month, etc.. November(9), December(10) should be stabbed".
And the response was something like, "I have weirdly good news for you".
The release of FRLG.ips has made me so interested in the old school pokemon glitches and their application in horror stuff. I know that’s been done since like the 90s but I still think it holds up as something disturbing
I fucking love the Isaac one, saw it yesterday. It really sells you how fucking horrifying the whole story is now that there’s no art style to lighten the blow
Edmund Mcmillen is overall really good at taking a taking a highly disturbing premise and putting it through a lens that keeps your brain from identifying that it should be disturbed.
I think the main component (besides the art style) is the way everything is exaggerated and gamified way everything works, it’s ridiculous so you never really think about how Issac is an innocent child being murdered by his own insane mother because in the game you’re killing enemies with tears and the basement is absurdly massive and filled with said enemies. Same way your brain doesn’t feel like it should be disturbed when you send a group of cats out to kill everything they come across because they’re casting spells and speaking english.
I’m a big fan of that style because sometimes there’s something that slips through and makes you think like “Oh damn that’s horrifying.” which kind of results in a chain reaction from the single crack that formed in the windshield.
Or Mewgenics being you, a resurrected zombie (or something along those lines, idk what the doc did), using an army of deformed cats to fight supernatural beings.
The game actually hurts me a lot because even with all the style the game has i can still hear the poor things getting hurt and i feel like shit for not planning better
The background story is only really hinted at, either obtusely through the environment or more explicitly through some of the ending cut scenes, but basically Isaac's parent split because his dad was an alcoholic with a gambling problem and his mom was losing herself to religious fundamentalism, and his dad leaves them. After his mom has a full on psychotic break and attacks him, Isaac locks himself in a toy chest to hide and ends up suffocating.
If you mean more what the gameplay is about, you play as Isaac running from his mother through several levels, fighting enemies and finding items that all have to do with religion, health problems, or abuse. It's generally understood that the actual gameplay is oxygen deprived Isaac in the chest, hallucinating in his final moments.
I see this a lot so I just wanted to clarify a little bit about the story
SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRETY OF ISAAC'S STORY:
Maggie never actually tries to kill Isaac, she is abusive and neglectful but never meant for him to die, she is actually very distraught by his death.
Maggie and Abraham were together with Isaac, Abraham develops a drinking and gambling problem eventually stealing from their savings and Maggie's purse. Tensions rise in the household and Maggie turns to religion as a way to bring their family back together and help Abraham repent (ha) for his alcoholism. Abraham thinks she's crazy and eventually he leaves her and Isaac.
Maggie goes deeper into religion and starts taking away the things Isaac has that remind her of Abraham so he wont grow up to be like him. This just makes Isaac feel guilty that HE was the reason behind his parents' breakup, and he begins to think he is evil. Because all of Isaac's toys are taken away he only has his drawings, and he starts drawing his mom as a horrible beast due to her behavior, which she finds.
Maggie becomes increasingly abusive to try to curb Isaac's behavior, shoving him in the closet for bad behavior and seemingly beating him with a spoon.
This eventually boils over, and Isaac believes he needs to lock himself away because he is the one who ruined him family, so he climbs into the chest and shuts it behind him. He eventually suffocates to death, and Maggie puts up missing posters and searches around the neighborhood, thinking he ran away, not knowing that his corpse was right there in her own home. Time passes and she eventually goes through Isaac's few remaining belongings, finding his remains in his toy chest.
SPOILERS FOR THE MAIN PLOT OF MEWGENICS BELOW:
An unspecified amount of time passes, and Maggie dies, seemingly self inflicted due to the loss of Isaac. You can find her belongs strewn about like a lot of pills and a locket with Isaac's face in it saying "The original owner must have cared about them" so it seems like (intentional or otherwise) Maggie had succumbed to her pill addiction. Dr. Beanies revives her and manipulates her into getting revenge on god for taking away his childhood cat, playing on her guilt over Isaac, saying that god is the one who took Isaac away, and it's all their fault. We don't know her thought process, but I'd like to think that Maggie actually wanted to repent for her actions. We'll probably get more story as Mewgenics DLC gets released.
I always figured that it was deliberately left ambivalent - we don't know whether the mom was literally trying to kill him at the beginning, and just felt bad about it afterwards or her abuse had just escalated to the point that Isaac thought she was trying to kill him. In the end, it doesn't make a huge difference either way.
The opening cutscene is just one of Isaac's drawings like with the final cutscene, the sketchy drawings in the cutscenes are Isaac's, and the last ending is him reflecting on his life on the other side talking with his "father" (We still don't know if he's dead or if it's meant to be the voice of god but again I'm thinking more will be in the Mewgenics DLC). In the first ending where you beat Mom that scenario plays out and is shown to just be a story. Maggie bursts into the room trying to kill Isaac, bible falls on her head killing her, Isaac wins, then it cuts to reality showing Maggie is standing there with a knife ominously. There is a photograph of Maggie holding a knife and yelling, so yes, it's likely that she would brandish it threateningly at Isaac and Abraham leading to Isaac's view of her in his stories but I don't believe she would genuinely try to kill Isaac. She loves him in a fucked up way and is trying to make sure he grows up "the right way".
We see what leads to him going into the chest, he reads the bible, sighs looking at himself in the mirror and seeing a monster, goes into the chest.
Which is a reinterpretation of Francis Bacon's 1953 painting "Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X" (which itself is a reinterpretation of Diego Velázquez's "Portrait of Innocent X", painted in 1650)
If I had a nickel for each time I saw a cookie game get into some weird Eldritch shit I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it’s happened twice
Touhou fans are just that cracked. Look up any doujin song and it's illustration and then at the official song and character they were based off. It's ridiculous
Can somebody find that minecraft art that went around recently? I love it so much but forgot where I saw it. It was called like “day 15” of the two week phase.
IKR??? Theres an artist I saw on twitter that made this big ass portrait with valentine half-naked in the middle surrounded by race participants and it looked like something you'd deadass see in a museum. It had 400K+ likes
I love when art actually depicts makima as terrifying as she is. I cannot recall the artist and i’ll try to post it in the thread if I can, but there was a fanart depicting Makima like this but stalking young denji in the forest as if she was a predator stalking its prey.
"What happened to classical artists and classical paintings?" they still exist but they're all digital artists now and they draw fanart for indie games
Deimos art. From Fallout New Vegas, one of the available companions, Boone, a retired army sniper. I love this one for the fallen angel reference as well as one classic wartime photo. It's a great piece of art on it's own, and I love this game, and this artist has so many incredible pieces.
This one especially gets me because it's the moment before Boone mercy kills his wife who has been captured and being sold off as a slave, by an enemy force way too big for him to rescue her from.
Not sure if it counts as "fanart" since it is made by the series director, but also it fits the energy of "completely different tonality" and also isn't official marketing by any stretch of the imagination. Speaking, of course, about Shinya Kumazaki's various reinterpretative paintings of Kirby series villains. Soul of Sectonia pictured here, as an example.
Oh just wait until you see the beloved Forgiveness of Jon from r/imsorryjon
Met by Saint Jon The Archangel in the writhing pits of hell, the beast was pinned, prone on the floor. He had taken many forms throughout the ages. From the creator of man to the far reaches of the universe, his perpetual reincarnations reigned throughout space and time… until now. His form was weak, the opposition strong. The time for atonement had finally come.
Battered, torn, exposed, the beast slacked his gaping maw.
Archon of Flesh is, in my opinion, the best 40k artist out there. Official and fan art. Yes, he does draw horny stuff, yes he loves twinkifing everyone. But goddamn his art is full of characterization and perfectly capture the tragedy of the characters. That's without saying his art is just gorgeous.
That TBOI fanart is one of my favorite fanarts I've ever seen. I love the story and lore from that game but people usually talk about the gameplay, not so much the story which is a shame.
