To allow larger bodies without being stupidly long.
Same concept as a curled shell, like on a nautilus, just a different shape.25

Literally my dream/fantasy pet. A silkmoth the size of a dog, minus the dust and insect stupidity.

Did you know the one you listed as "very cool snail" has iron in its "scales"?
Unrelated: It used to be really meta for r/Gojicenter but it is dysfunctional due to homology.
4
u/Holiday_Yam_561 22d ago
Really? Thatβs so cool
1
u/Arcane_Aries 22d ago
They are called volcano snails and live in the deep sea near hydrothermal vents which are basically underwater volcanos. That's how they get the iron shells, they absorb the iron sulfide from the water around the vents

Hollow caterpillar.
I think i like that name
Edit: oh wait, those arent species names nvm. They propably sound better than whatever scientists called it

u/FatRiceCat 22d ago
I thought these were their actual names until bug 6 was called "idk how to describe this fella"

u/mandiblesmooch 23d ago
6 looks like something that would slash you with its horn in Hollow Knight. It literally has the color scheme.

Giraffe weevils. I will not provide an image as they look exactly how you expect (I'm too lazy)

u/Minti-Roze 23d ago
I know number 7 is a scaly foot gastropod, or volcano snail - they're aquatic creatures that hang around super hot thermal vents deep in the ocean
They're also the only known animal to contain iron in their shells

u/InternetUserAgain 22d ago
I love all these guys but genuinely what purpose do these dudes serve
What do they even do that requires them to be built like that
God didn't make these guys with divine intention he made them with the Spore creature creator
2
u/famineharbinger 22d ago
by "what purpose" do you mean ljke the animal in an ecosystem or do you mean the purpose of their funky looking adaptations?
2
u/InternetUserAgain 22d ago
Both
2
u/famineharbinger 22d ago
in an ecosystem, almost all organisms are super important! unless theyve been transported there, theyve evolved alongside every other organism there to form their ecosystem, they could be predators or prey but they are certainly very useful!
in terms of their adaptations, some of them we know about (e.g. the lava snail has iron sulphides in its shell), and some we ourselves dont really know why they look like that! (e.g. the treehoppers with funky looking heads), though often in nature especially with invertebrates you can guess that a weird looking feature is probably threat display of some kind (like the hollow knight caterpillar), not always though, its possible some traits just emerged truly randomly even!
