I refuse to acknowledge "pfört" as just "horse" in their language because it's a funny name.
35
u/Dovahkiinthesardine 14d ago
The actual word is "Pferd"
25
u/MajorBootyhole420 14d ago
is this the dutch (norwegian?? idk) version of someone saying "hons" instead of "horse"

“Klopf klopf” is German for knock-knock. It’s also like the sound a horse hoof makes.
“Wer ist da” is “who’s there”, the expected response to a knock knock joke.
“Pferd” is German for horse. “pfört” is a funny mispronunciation of Pferd, like “honse” in English
This is funny as an unexpected outcome to a knock knock joke (the sound was the horse hooves), because of the surprise of the horse walking through a door like a person, and because the horse is saying its name in a silly way.

u/Thejacensolo 14d ago
Imo the only "knock Knock" joke that works in german, as usually "Knock Knock" isnt really a joke category there:
"Klopf Klopf"
"Wer ist da?"
"Macht."
"Wer Macht?"
"Genau die."
31
u/Ezwa 14d ago
HAHAHAHAHAHA classic !! (I do not speak german)
29
u/jobblejosh 14d ago
"Knock knock"
"Who is there?"
"Makes"
"Who makes?" (But it's a homophone for 'Wehrmacht'; the German military specifically during WW2).
"Yes, exactly us"
11
u/IRefuseToGiveAName 14d ago edited 14d ago
Wer macht = macht who? (Or who makes? The joke doesn't translate well 1:1)
Wehrmacht = the nazi German army (modern term is Bundeswehr)
So
Knock knock
Who's there?
Macht.
Macht who? (The army?)
Exactly, us.
I'm not a native German speaker so the "wer macht" might not be completely correct. But the gist is the same.
Edit: changed die to us, mixed my German and English. It's been like a decade since I was in Germany. I'm.... rusty

Pfört also sounds a little bit like Pforte, which is an old fashioned term for door or gate, I always felt like that added another layer of whimsy because the horse is at the door

Wait, it's not? My my rule of thumb is if it sounds like a mix of English and German it's dutch, but what language is it?

Yeah and the biiiig difference in this case is that in Dutch you'd use 'wat nu' instead of 'wat nou'. The second option isn't even all that incorrect, it just sounds impolite. Source: am Dutch and used to think this was a pic of a Dutch newspaper (I never read the body text though that's definitely Afrikaans)

The best part is that poopensharten isnt a real word. They borrowed a joke word from an English post mocking German words knowing their German audience would be anle to recognize its meaning.

27
u/HeccinFloofOwO 14d ago
estrogen commonly makes you crave sodium, and pickles are a very good source of it. it's a common joke in trans circles that transfems eat a lot of pickles due to said craving.
not even transfem, but i do crave pickles a lot. personally i just like the taste.

Fun fact about Dutch: for core vocabulary it shares roughly 50% to 60% lexical overlap with English. Which means you should be able to read 50 to 60% of Dutch words if you sort of sound them out. This does not apply to spoken Dutch.

I agree. An adequate translation of Federvieh is tricky. It means both, feathered beast and feathered lifestock i.e. poultry.

I’m really curious if anyone has examples of memes in English that are still understandable to a degree from the perspective of their native language
I mean I guess if you can read this comment then you would be able to read the English memes but still

Iean this works pretty well with simple phrases between English, Dutch and German, because they're all very closely related. I doubt this would work between English and any other language.

Well, that and I get the feeling that this isn't "proper" German, and is using actual English words as slang. I'm pretty sure the non-slang way to say it in German would be something like "Ist es die Ende für Mich?" or something.
I'm willing to be wrong on that one though, because I haven't studied German for nearly a decade and I wasn't even particularly good at it back then.
→ More replies (3)28
u/FoxGuy303 14d ago
German here, the proper saying would be "Ist es zu Ende für mich?" but no person under 25 talks like that anymore. Especially Gen Z and younger have A LOT and I mean A LOT of english words mixed in as slang.

This meme is always so disappointing to me because whoever made this didn't bother to conjugate poopensharten to past perfect, which kinda ruins the effect of this tweet actually having been made by a dutch person.
It would have taken them like 2 seconds to just search up conjugations.
