I'm not defending it, I just want to point out that this was like 75 years ago, so the author, publisher, anyone who worked on this book(aside from vampires) are dead - and so are most of the people that read it growing up.

u/not-ulquiorr4_ 3d ago

From the Wikipedia page for the board game, bottom right quadrant. This version of the game was made from 1860 and was called "The Checkered Game of Life", the first of the more modernized version we know was created 100 years later in 1960 and dropped "Checkered" from the title

for context in one of the thomas books (henry the green engine) there was a short story where some boys were described "as black as _" and it caused major controversy the author changed it to "as black as soot" and made a public apology (thank god)

this isnt even the only example of stuff like this happening another infamous example is the original title for "and then there were none"

287

u/Wrong-Mouse-6499 Chinese PvZ Comics Guy (also Soyspeare) 4d ago

the original title in question:

142

u/MrEmptySet 3d ago

In case anyone was curious, the title is a reference to a nursery rhyme, probably known better as "Ten Little Indians". Christie wrote a dozen or so stories with titles lifted from nursery rhymes (and often plots that metaphorically correspond in some way), though I couldn't tell you why.

61

u/Disastrous_Point8584 3d ago

After that it was named ā€œAnd Then There Were Noneā€

35

u/TomNin97 3d ago

And the poem used in the story referred to them as "soldiers" iirc

88

u/PunchingFossils 3d ago

Isn’t that basically impossible?
could it accelerate fast enough to catch the bullet?

115

u/BingusTheStupid I love you all ā¤ļø 3d ago

All I know is that when testing the F-11, they put it into a shallow dive to attack a target, fired the guns, went supersonic, and before the plane pulled out of the dive the cannon shells hit the front of the aircraft.

29

u/Excellent-Gur-8547 3d ago edited 3d ago

This has actually happened multiple times lol. The F-11 did it in testing and if I recall correctly, a dutch pilot shot himself down during a training mission in an F-16.

The plane doesn't have to accelerate. The bullets aren't powered after they leave the barrel, but the plane is, so bullets start losing speed basically instantly, but the plane can maintain, or accelerate. So if you're arcing downwards while firing and not slowing yourself down, eventually you'll catch up to the cloud of bullets if you're at a sufficiently high altitude. This is a risk for basically any combat aircraft with a gun, it's not a particularly hard feat from a speed perspective alone, bullets don't actually move that quickly for that long. Missiles on the other hand...

15

u/nogaesallowed 3d ago

bullet slowed down when the plane is accelerating. Not imposable but would be pretty crazy odds

Iirc it was something to promote nuclear power. They crashed a full-speed train into a cask, a container made to contain nuclear waste, and the train was completely wrecked, while the cask was fine. Well, it was unusable, but the waste didn't leak and could safely be transferred to another container.

During the trollhunters movie, there is an alien woman (dont worry about it) and a human jock who kiss several times. It is revealed at some point that with enough kisses has resulted in the alien woman impregnating the jock.

The jock spends half the movie having unfunny pregnancy craving and mood swings jokes until he gives birth to like 5 alien kids. But you don't have to worry about it, because the main character goes back in time, thus erasing the newborn babies from the timeline. Somehow the alien and the jock are okay with this.

126

u/HolidayInLordran 3d ago

So not only teenage mpreg but also abortion?

41

While they result in the same outcome, I don't think most people would consider altering the past in such a way that a birth no longer happens "abortion".

They were all OK and this was just a fun prank, right?

44

u/mydicksmellsgood 3d ago

They were all ok. The first one was an infant who was mailed just a mile away. The parents had basically paid the postal service to carry the 8 month old to her grandparents. The others mostly just rode in the mail cars on trains. Nobody in a sack or crate. At least for some, the mail carrier was family anyway.

17

u/Living_Murphys_Law 3d ago

They were OK, yes. A prank? Not exactly. It was just cheaper than buying an extra train ticket, so the kids would get sent through the mail while thrifty adults would take a regular transport.

Honestly, I'm surprised it was only seven.

Context: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_invasion_of_Grenada

A CBS News poll that surveyed 304 people showed that 91% of Grenadians welcomed the invasion, and that 85% of Grenadians felt that their lives were in danger while Hudson Austin was in power.[103]

25 October is a national holiday in Grenada, called Thanksgiving Day, to commemorate the invasion. St. George's University (SGU) built a monument on its True Blue campus to honor the American servicemen killed during the invasion, and marks the day with an annual memorial ceremony.[104][105]

I mean it was an easy win, he had overthrown the actually popular revolution leader, let him go after mass protests, then not long after had him randomly arrested and executed in a "not-even-trying-to-be-legit" military tribunal where he was tried and then immediately shot. He wasn't going to last long and realistically the soviets would have invaded instead soon after if the USA didn't first. It was a very obvious thing to do at the time if you're the USA government in that exact scenario in the context of that particular moment in history.

Star Trek had the N Word in an episode 10,475 days ago. Cirroc Lofton got the honour of doing a speech in a similar vein as the song "Whitey's on the moon". He says the most ridiculous part of this fictional story of a space station full of aliens is that a black man is in charge of it. "The only reason the white man would let coloureds on the moon is if they need somebody to shine their shoes. As far as they're concerned we'll always be ... " Hard R. Spat with venom because he knows exactly how powerful that word is when used as a weapon.

u/NihatAmipoglu 3d ago

I'm pretty sure Abraham Lincoln also says "what a charming n*gress" to Uhura in the original series. Then he immediately apologizes but Uhura is so far removed from the hate that her ancestors suffered, she doesn't even register the slur as a slur.

They were really optimistic about that stuff back in the day lol.
