Advice ☎️ Considering swapping fiber provider any suggestions?
Getting really frustrated with Maxis. I work from home fully so reliable internet is really important.
With Maxis, I have gotten random outages with no notice including one time for 2 days straight (required several calls just to get it back up). Went into the maxis shop one time for a different issue and glanced at the computer & noticed that they had put me back on contract after years of me being off contract without any notice. I hadn't upgraded or anything (according to them it was an accident because of a technical error but how TF does that even happen).
TLDR:
I'm sick of Maxis and really considering swapping my fiber provider but I'm worried the other ones will be equally garbage tbh. TIME is unfortunately not available for my area.
Any suggestions/experience with other service providers? Good or bad I'd love to hear about it so I know who to avoid also 😂

I’ve been on Time Fibre 600mbps for the past 4 years. Don’t think I’ve ever had any downtime.
Honestly, first time ever not having internet issues in Malaysia. If you’ve got coverage, I would recommend a look at Time.
Edit: I’ve swapped out their supplied router with my own, and it’s been solid since 2021 haha

What kind of outage?
No internet whatsoever? Could it be a problem with your modem/router? May need to replace it.
Also could be an issue with the fiber line or box. Changing providers won't matter. They all use the same lines. (Except for Time. If you do have them as an option, then it may be worth a switch)

Maxis is moving to their own infrastructure now from what I understood (not fully rolled out nationwide yet). That's what caused the outage rn. They migrated my line on their backend without upgrading my modem which caused a mismatch of the infrastructure vs the modem hence no wifi (just my understanding based off what they told me not sure about the technical details)
Previous outages were random, some were just random drops for about 5-10 seconds and others were for like an hour or two. Previous ones no problem with modem or anything else just a Maxis/TM fiber line issue I'm guessing. Modem was provided by maxis haha

been on celcomdigi for about 4 years years now and have had only 1 downtime vs unifi previously which had downtime every few months

Been on unifi for 10 years +. Never had issues with speed and commection. If issues arise its from personal hardware like aging router or AP.

Maxis piggyback on Unifi. Maxis outage means unifi fibre is the problem in your area. When you call maxis to fix fibre issues, they then call unifi technician, unifi technician the one who came to repair the issue. So if you're considering to change maxis to unifi, it's like replacing Najibuntut to Pig JoLow as PM.
You can try 5g tech like unifi, Yes5g etc....in my area, speed is faster against my 100mbps maxis, but connection is spotty not fit for online gaming.
Or you can try Starlink. I've played online FPS with people on starlink quite often, means the signal is quite good too

Not fiber but i made the change to starlink from unifi. Super happy considering for some reason when it rains, on unifi fibre speeds will drop and latency increases. Rarely have that problem with starlink despite it being satellite based internet

Unifi, but change to a good router (not what they provide). You can even ask their team for that if you don't know, some of their technicians will provide alternatives. More expensive, but less hassle for 5/10 year later.

I use time for 2 years now, sometimes i had high latency which is annoying.
Parents house using unifi had 0 issues except 1 time they did port extension messed up the whole connection, after that is just smooth sailing until today. Customer support also friendly to help me when i change to my own wifi modem, through phone call so its free.

I'm using unifi, mostly no problem, chatting with their agent can be tricky for the 1st time but it gets easier after that.

There are only 2 providers that pull the actual fiber cables: Time and TM. Others are resellers. I had used Celcom, Digi, Maxis and Unifi. Any issue with the fiber cable, you still have to deal with TM.

Maxis moving to their own cables (afaik based on what the technicians and customer service told me - couldn't find the public announcements for it online)

They lied. Its running to TM all along so your best choice is TMnet which to be fair, have been dependable for me.

Time.Com.
Excellent service. VERY fast internet.
But their coverage is very low. High chance yourr not even in them.
But in case you do, give em a try!

Whatever you do don't get unifi

Why?

There's no way out. Idk why so many people push for unifi.

u/Ryker_Reinhart 22h ago
Ah like they make it hard to cancel? Good to know that always sucks 😅

Oh yeah, it's borderline impossible and you need to go out of your way to do it. That said in some areas you only have unifi

I manage all 3, TIME, Maxis, Unifi all have a 99% reliability. TIME took the longest time to fix a downtime around 3-4 days which isn't acceptable.
My house is next to a tower, so if my Maxis home fibre goes down(typically at 12am while playing Dota 2) I'll switch up to my Celcom 5G modem and continue playing.
Take my advice. Get a backup internet connection like I do rather than complaining, money shouldn't be a problem for you if you're serious about having an internet connection all the time.

Ngl kinda nuts to have more than one internet provider just to have reliable uptime. Feels like rewarding bad service, just on principle I'd probably avoid doing that personally
Also if money wasn't a consideration, I wouldn't be working at all haha 😂

probably just turn on hotspot and use phone 5g as a backup. Don't need a 2nd internet provider. Our phone 5g has catch up to fibre speed. Although it depends on connection quality to tower. Like u/kimi_rules lives next to tower, don't even need separate 5g modem. Just use your phone hotspot for that occasional fibre outage

The modem is for my weekend house, which acts as a backup for my main house for when I'm WFH and gaming.
Remember I said I was playing Dota 2? I play on my desktop PC, and desktop PC don't come with Wifi. My PCIe slots are maxed out and the B580 doesn't accept lane sharing on the X370. If I want to use my phone, I'll need to convert it to a router with a Type-C to RJ45 + PD adapter just to make it work. It's not feasible when I can't use my phone like this and my family doesn't have access to internet for their IoT gadgets.
If you don't understand my 2nd point, it's okay. Don't assume it's as easy as you think.

Yeah that's what i ended up doing it worked just tough for the multi day outages (run out of hotspot data lol cause I connect to my company's internal network over vpn for work so it constantly sucks data about 2-3GB/hour) or if it happens sporadically for months (where my connection just drops for a couple minutes but several times an hour only at certain random times)

The definition of insanity here is switching provider hoping for things to change and be better.
It's not bad service, 99% of advertised uptime is good enough. The other 1% is up to the user.
If we're talking business, like my experience with TIME. It's seriously not acceptable.

I'm not saying 99% uptime isn't good but for one thing generally would be nice to know in advance about their planned outages but I've never been notified.
What you had happen with TIME, I had with Maxis also. I was without WIFI for 2-3 days until I called them several times over the course of several days. WIFI down is one thing, terrible service is another. (EDIT: just to clarify service as in customer service lol)
The definition of insanity here is switching provider hoping for things to change and be better.
I'm under no delusion that there is 100% gonna be perfect provider? That's what the post is for just to gauge if there is a better provider or if they all suck.
Also if you read my post 90% of my problems is just Maxis issues. If it was just outages, I wouldn't be so annoyed but it's outages with a lack of proper communication and issues with them promising to come/call on x day and nobody getting back to me.

The best u can try UniFi
