I don’t want to blow your mind but there’s something about storm that bigots might not like

They're intimidated by a ****ing goddess.

bigotry means intolerant of other points of view. this entire thread is a self confession by the OP as a bigot.

Psssh. Magik got it going on.

u/AnonymousFriend80 1h ago

Rogue got that huge push with the 90 animated series, then again with the Fox movies. And because of that, Evolution gave so many their goth girl awakenings. Magik's been around a long time but hasn't really been pushed until more recently. Too bad her movie sort of stunk because Anya Taylor-Joy was fantastic as her.

"They better not make it woke!"

Idiots.

24

u/DavoSeaworth96 3h ago

Honestly, you joke but someone criticising the bloody x men for being woke is bound to happen and will inevitably not fail to annoy me ahah

15

u/vmeloni1232 3h ago

Oh, it's already happened on reddit. I don't remember what sub it was but someone was talking about gender and race swapping in the X-Men and I had to argue that it would be the dumbest thing for X-Men to do that. There's so many prominent women, people of color and LGBT characters that any swapping is pointless.

3

u/DavoSeaworth96 2h ago

Truly feel like truly any xmen character can be race swapped and it won't take away from them or change their story, but expect marvel to do the 'safe' thing and cast a black actor to play beast or nightcrawler so they are blue anyway but they get points for trying

7

u/vmeloni1232 2h ago

And I certainly wouldn't cry about it, I'd rather just see Marvel put the minority characters high instead of swapping

0

u/DavoSeaworth96 2h ago

Yeah, it's such a diverse cast that it's unneeded agreed. I do wonder how the MCU will handle a lot of the cast. People like Xavier, Magneto and Storm almost feel impossible to introduce so late. They are so powerful I'm wondering how they'll explain what they've been doing.

Omegas like Bobby are young enough to explain, at least. I guess Storm could be too but I would much prefer an experienced Storm, Cyclops etc

3

u/vmeloni1232 2h ago

I always figure that come from the multiverse, but having Jean Gray is Spider-Man ended that thought.

If Secret Wars is the soft reboot, I guess they wouldn't be introduced so late

2

u/DavoSeaworth96 2h ago

Yeah, isn't Ms Marvel also meant to be a mutant in the MCU? It's a difficult timeline to manage simply because Magneto HAS to be from WW2 unless retconnned so it's so hard to scale them to not be prevalent during the main MCU timeframe. I do feel for writers in every redo of x men for that reason

1

u/vmeloni1232 2h ago

Yeah, they switched Ms Marvel from being an Inhuman to a mutant in the comics, so I'm sure she'll be a mutant in the MCU.

I know I'm in the minority here, but Magneto can't have the WW2 origin. I very much understand the importance of it, but it isn't going to translate to the late 2020s and into the 2030s. Unless they do timeline shenanigans, which i don't want, I don't know how it could be done. You can say his powers age him slower, but then he starts to age real time in the Movies.

I bet they won't even touch it, so we get the same character without having to have the details and get messy

1

u/DavoSeaworth96 2h ago

Agreed honestly. Like I've seen the takes to swap him to being Rwandan but that feels... Insensitive for some reason? Almost like marvel would be pouncing on a more recent tragedy for logistical reasons. Maybe it could be done well and respectfully but it would be tricky. I agree with you, best way is just to introduce magneto and leave it open to interpretation

Xavier

IMO Xavier being white and having the associated privilege that comes with it informs his naivety about mutant/human cooperation

But other than him, I don’t disagree

It’s happened in this very thread mate.

37

u/jr_randolph 3h ago

Lol you have racists that love Michael Jordan haha it is what it is with some people.

32

u/withgreatpower 3h ago

Because they like people being in "their place."

My racist as shit father in law loved the NFL because he liked that there was a whole place for those (redacted) to do what they were best at, like he was really proud of them for finding a way to use their strength even though (HIS ACTUAL WORDS) the quarterback had to be a white guy because they needed to have brains.

Pretty cool when he died!

7

u/Thisisgotham 1h ago

Absolutely untrue, some of us want to smash Emma Frost too.

6

u/GONKworshipper 3h ago

The worst part to me is the insistence on demonizing every other superhero team

4

u/ell_hou 3h ago

Mutants and the X-men do kinda put a lot of shade on every other Marvel hero just by their mere existence. How are we supposed to cheer for Captain America or Spider-Man whenever their latest comic issue happens alongside an ongoing mutant holocaust?

8

u/MikeofK72 2h ago

Because plenty of them are busy ensuring there's still a planet for the Mutants and Humans to fight over.

•

u/cornstalks2033 39m ago

COMPLETELY AGREE Thats why I'm worried about the next phase of The MCU

"I like the X-Men, but the prejudice just doesn't make sense...unlike REAL LIFE!" - Actual posts that pop up in Marvel subreddits damn near once a week.

14

u/Longjumping_Spite_35 4h ago

The X-Men and comics have ALWAYS been woke! Makes you wonder how the hell someone like Ike Perlmutter got a job at Marvel.

14

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man 3h ago

Toys. Loved to sell toys. He bought Toy Biz, became Marvel Ceo, etc

8

u/Longjumping_Spite_35 3h ago

And thought that boys don't want Black Widow toys.

Can confirm many X-Men fans arent interested in sex with Rogue. I've been one in both senses since I was a young kid in the 80s.

What exactly are we agreeing or disagreeing with here? If it's that there are bigoted X-Men fans out there who somehow completely miss the point of X-Men I can definitely attest to that. I've met maaaaaany over the years who whine and bitch about female, POC, or LGBT X-Men.

Just yesterday I saw a poll post of which of the three most popular mutants (Wolvie, Magneto, Storm) is your favorite and a sadly not surprising of replies were whining Storm shouldnt even be on the list and that Storm fans dont actually like her, they only pretend to because she's black and female.

EDIT: Even while editing this comment I watched the votes bounce wildly from 5 and then down to 1 and then up/down several times.

no, it’s bc you made a whole anecdotal argument over a meme

-6

u/justagayguyinnyc Wiccan 3h ago edited 3h ago

You're right: how awful of me to have asked what the meme is trying to say or discussed the deeper thought of a post on a site intended for people to have discussions on.

My total bad.

8

u/AChineseSpyBalloon 3h ago

You’re putting words in my mouth, my friend. I mean no hostility

-> you said people are downvoting you bc you’re a gay man trying to talk about it

-> I think people are downvoting the content of what you’ve written in the context of the meme, nothing more or less

Sorry if I came off aggressive, I typed my above message very fast! I hope you have a lovely day! :)

Mmm-hmm.

Of course that weird side of the fandom would want to bang the hot mutant who would unintentionally kill them or send them into a coma during said banging.

Her first kiss, iirc, sent the boy into a coma. These larpers have no clue about their own source material.

u/BasedAustralhungary 3h ago

I'm a woke X-Men fan that understand the X-Men and appreciate their stories and nuance about minorities and how they became the perfect ground to make stories about queer people and explore cultural contexts usually unknown for the average American to explore an experience all around the world. I also like Wolverine and want to smash Rogue.

-3

u/AnonymousFriend80 1h ago

People keep saying "always been woke". No it hasn't. It dealt with a group within society be ostracized, and that was supposed to parallel the civil rights movement, and possibly women's rights. Being "woke" involves so much more and a completely different way those groups went about things, versus today. Back then, people were being denied basic human rights, and we're having laws aggressively attacking them.

Also, I've never much cared for using mutants or mages or whatever, trying to say they should not be feared when 95% of them are walking nuclear explosions who can not control their powers or one stumble away from bringing down a building or killing large amounts of people. Hell, each movie that features Scott Summers has him blowing holes in whatever building he's in. And how many people died because Charles Xavier had an aneurysm? And we're not even looking at the Brotherhood of EVIL Mutants and those purposely causing trouble.

Blacks, gays, trans, or whatever people are not a threat in anyway and are essentially the same as any other person.

5

u/DaNoahLP Avengers 1h ago

The problem about this discussion is that there is no unified definition of woke or even human rights. And in universe, 95% if mutants have abilities like "float an inch above the floor" we just see the top of top fighting each other.

•

u/AnonymousFriend80 54m ago

Most mutants featured in the comics, animated series, and movies don't have any physical abnormalities. They could be walking around and no one would know. If all you had going on was float an inch off the floor, you'd have no problem. You'd even probably not even know your a mutant until Xavier came knocking at your door.

The Morlocks exist as the ones who can not hide that they are different. I can grasp and understand how people feel about them because the look like monsters and freaks, and are disgusting looking. I also feel sympathy for them as well. Most of them don't even have any really cool powers. Hell, Hank McCoy was mostly normal passing until he kept messing with himself.

Fuck you, mutants that look like Halle Barry and Famke Janssen. With your incredibly awesome abilities, talking about there's nothing wrong when Rogue can't even touch those she cares about.

Yeah pretty much exactly this is why I don't like that parallel. X Men is about othering entire groups of people as a whole and humanity being prone to conflict and tribalism.

The read that Mutants = Minorities is contrived nonsense to me. Because the justifications for hating/fearing one or the other are not equal. Me having a certain amount of melanin in my skin doesn't make me a present or active threat. Me touching someone and having them disintegrate into acid even on accident? Yeah that's gonna be seen as a problem.

It's really hard to get that analogy when the people in universe have totally legitimate concerns about general safety. When the whole idea about bigotry FABRICATING the idea of a threat is that said threats ARE fabrications.

-14

u/Eazy-Eid 3h ago

It's just a comic book, relax. Doesn't need to be another ridiculous culture war battlefield.

4

u/ARquantam 3h ago

LMAO they're talking bout you in the post.
The X-Men represent marginalised communities. Especially queer people. That was the whole point. Why do you think captain America is such a dick in X Men issues ? It's because they use him to represent the US govt. at times. If you think comics, especially X-Men don't have anything to do with culture you're a clown. YOU don't like to think or talk bout it because your life is probably comfortable in that sense. That's why you have no interest in talking bout it or changing culture.

-5

u/Eazy-Eid 3h ago

Lol actually my point is different people like stories for different reasons, not because they necessarily relate to or 100% agree with the message. You don't have to turn it into a battleground.

9

u/ThisIsNotACryForHelp 3h ago

X-Men can't become cultural commentary, because X-Men is cultural commentary. It already is a culture war battlefield, and always has been.

-1

u/ARquantam 3h ago

That's what I'm saying...lol. Some People like X men because they see themselves in them.

-1

u/_Cromwell_ 3h ago

Well arguably the "purpose" is to help those people experience and thus comprehend ideas and concepts they would otherwise avoid or be adverse to by sneaking them in under the guise of a superhero story.

While it won't work on everybody, some small percentage will walk away with a better understanding of bigotry and other concepts that they may then eventually apply to the real world and real people. Hopefully.

If sexy Rogue and badass Logan get them to read in the first place, that's literally part of the plan/idea.

The idea isn't supposed to be that the comics are excluding people like that. It's that they are inviting them (everybody) in, and then communicating important ideas irregardless.

Tldr: bigots who understand the xmen's plight are better situated to maybe not be bigots someday than bigots who don't read xmen

Mutants.

Born the way they are.

Have to hide the way they were born from society at large, because society thinks they’re abhorrent and shouldn’t exist, even though they can’t change who they are.

I wonder what that’s supposed to be a metaphor for in real life?

Couldn’t possibly be representative of queer people’s existence in a lot of societies. Not at all. 🙄😒 /s
