I'm in my 30s with a career in conservation and want to save the animals and even I don't know how.

God speed, Devon.

145

u/clomclom Oct 16 '25

Well he isn't wrong that eating less animals results in less being killed. In case you didn't know that already.

We watched the Attenborough documentary where he finishes off saying 'the one thing we can definitely do is eat less meat, particularly beef'. My wife then took us to Edgar's Mission where we met intelligent pigs, funky goats, harmless sheep and lambs JUST SO CUTE, and friendly, kind-eyed, wet-nosed cows that are essentially car sized grass-eating labradors that happen to taste nice.

Anyway, since then, I've not done any more pork or lamb shoulders in the smoker, we have tried to reduce beef consumption (Ottolenghi's mushroom ragu is amazing. Takes a while, but worth it) and have massively reduced our consumption of dairy milk, replacing it with Oat in our morning coffees and dramatically reducing cereal consumption.

I say all this not as virtue signalling (because my values are mine), but instead to highlight once you have a personal revelation about the need, can appropriate the decision to try to do something about it, and have access to viable options/replacements, it's definitely possible to begin/at least do something.

Just don't introduce me to any cool chickens. I know they exist. But please. I need the eggs. I need the legs. Tofu is great, but I'm just a middle aged middle class man. I can only spend so long cooking each night. And I love ducks, but then...I LOVE ducks, you know?

47

u/bitch_is_cray_cray Oct 16 '25

You might want to check out Vincent Vegetarian and Lamyong (frozen veggie options of meat). They do a pretty decent "roast duck" like you'd find in peking duck.

11

u/propargyl Oct 16 '25

For me keeping chickens: seeing a chicken hunt a mouse indicated that they have higher intelligence than an orange muppet.

4

u/rangda Oct 17 '25

Seeing a hen hunt a mouse would have creeped me out as a kid but that was when I saw my nana’s hens hunting bugs and had that same sense of “okay, you girls have some skills”. Astonishing eyesight and clever enough to follow my Nana when she was digging in the garden to collect the bugs she’d flush out. They learned quickly that I’d give them food and my brother wouldn’t and became my little entourage outside, even sitting on my knee sometimes.

Never felt quite okay with eating hens after that, especially not the sight of a whole freezer pack of wings next to the BBQ representing however many animals and being turned into a pile of bones over the night without those animals even entering peoples’ minds.
Nor with this idea people have that they’re so stupid that their experience of life is not worth any consideration.

6

u/denpakuma Oct 16 '25

Try the Lamyong salted crispy chicken, just do it.

6

u/zaro3785 Oct 17 '25

I mean, anything Lamyong is banging

4

u/denpakuma Oct 17 '25

100% that brand has a chokehold over me

7

u/yelawolf89 Oct 17 '25

The reason I don’t eat anymore was a profound experience with a cow. I don’t talk about it much cause it was my experience, but it can really rock you when you have those moments!!

6

u/NeatKaleidoscope9157 Oct 16 '25

can you please tell me more about the mushroom ragu? it sounds awesome, id love to give it a try

As a chicken haver eat the eggs! Just make sure they’re truly free range. We have a chicken and as long as she’s happy she’s laying! Laying eggs is good for them, and unless fertilised they go to waste so eat up!

1

u/DoDoDoTheFunkyGibbon Inner North: Beard √ Colourful Socks √ Fixie x Oct 17 '25

Absolutely! Have been buying free range for years; always try to get the ones with the lower chicken:space density

Have you tried eating less of the endangered animals?

1

u/MissZoeLaLa Oct 19 '25

I don’t mean to sound like a dick, but with your career and wanting to save animals, not eating them never crossed your mind? Not factory farming them for milk and eggs?

That's very sweet of him.

People might be surprised how young some people are when they develop these interests, and parental influence is not necessary. My parents were voracious meat eaters and I went through periods of vegetarianism and pescatarianism and ultimately went vegan as an adult.

One of my best friends refused and hated meat from around the age of four to the dismay of her parents who lived in a place where meat is the heart of local culture. It made it hard for them and for her (I know her parents too).

At least two of my friends when I was little were vegetarian, only one with veggie parents.

Most kids will get upset if you tell them you have to kill an animal to get meat. When you tell those kids that not eating meat means no more nuggets, most of them will opt for the nuggets. Some refuse meat thereafter though and it's still a valid choice.

26

u/alchemicaldreaming Oct 16 '25

Yes, this is so true. My Cousin's two kids decided independently that they wanted to go vegetarian around the same age, a few years apart. The adults in the family decided to do so, in solidarity and also, because it was more time efficient. The kids are now almost not kids, and the oldest has started to eat meat but I'm not sure how long that will last.

16

u/withnailandpie Oct 16 '25

Having flashbacks to my first stint as vegetarian and finding chicken at the bottom of my soup because mum was so worried about PROTEIN

21

u/Catfoxdogbro Oct 16 '25

When I first started bringing my boyfriend over to my mum's house, she would always have "leftover" steak and things on the kitchen counter for him, because she was worried about him dating me (the vegan) who only ever cooked vegan food for him.

That boyfriend has been vegan for 7 years now and we have an enormous, healthy vegan toddler together! Mum doesn't worry about us anymore haha

7

u/bitch_is_cray_cray Oct 16 '25

my family have too, given me trust issues 🙃🙃

17

u/FreerangeWitch Oct 16 '25

My ten year old has 24 hour fits of vegetarianism because he remembers where meat comes from, which is fine, I ate a plant based diet for over a decade so it's easy enough for me to modify meals. If he wants to go full time vego at some point, and I suspect he will, it'll definitely be a bit difficult eating outside of the house where we are, but we can make it work at home.

9

u/mylifeisaboogerbubbl Oct 16 '25

I had my "save the animals" moment when I was 9 and decided to become a vegetarian. It's been 28 years since then and I'm still happy with the choice I made!

7

u/spacelama Oct 16 '25

I had to look up to your username to see whether you were my wife. And then I remembered how to mathematics. Anyway, where is she?

About a decade ago, tofu was not a thing I tolerated. She's found some nice methods of cooking it so it's not gross. Even if she does occasionally just shove a slab of it into a saucepan and eat the entire slab in one go by itself on a lazy night.

9

u/ineedhelpthankyou29 Oct 16 '25

Me too! I was 9 and my parents were supportive enough to be on board. Haven’t had meat in 20 years now.

Another thing you can do is keep your cat inside. Get them toys, a scratching post, and train them to use a litter tray and millions of tiny critters, possums and birds will not get murdered by your cat. Cats don't always hunt for food; sometimes it's just to torture and kill something for fun.

Also desex your cat, so they won't scent mark your house or get genital cancer. Microchip them and register it too.

44

u/MagicOrpheus310 Oct 16 '25

Someone isn't pleased their parents named them after processed meat haha

7

u/colourful_space Oct 17 '25

I’m working on it, Devon. I’m learning to cook vegetable proteins, I’ve got some good chickpea and lentil meals now and I’m getting better at using tofu. I live alone and batch cook so I don’t like to take risks with cooking in case I get stuck with something I don’t like for the week and I don’t want to throw out large amounts of food, so some meals I’ve been doing half meat and half tofu. That way at least if the tofu is a bit disappointing I know the rest of it will work fine.

For any other tofu-curious omnivores - my preferred way so far to use it in things like stir fries and curries is to slice it into thin bite sized pieces, sear in batches, then put it to the side while making the rest of the dish and add back near the end.

u/AutisticPenguin2 Oct 16 '25

27

u/Undertheoceandragons Oct 16 '25

Eating less meat, or none at all, is objectively better for the animals, the planet and your health. The world has been changing for the better in this space, catch up or be a caveman, up to you!

31

u/Feeling-Change-1750 Oct 16 '25

Adorable! Thank you for your contribution to the planet Devon & caring so much for animals

13

u/felixsapiens Oct 16 '25

He's actually entirely right as well.

None of us really need to be hardcore vegetarian/vegan. If the whole West ate two, three or four fewer meat meals a week, the overall impact on the environment would be significant.

2

u/Skiztiz Oct 17 '25

Totally agree. It would drastically reduce emissions.

4

u/Feeling-Change-1750 Oct 16 '25

57

6

u/thow_me_away12 Oct 16 '25

Absolutely love this, and am conscious about my own eating habits.

But I hate that I immediately thought that this may be written by an adult, not a child, to get more attention.

That said my 8 year old is stubborn. So I think he'd only do 'no meat' rather than 'try to cut down on meat'

42

u/hollyjazzy Oct 16 '25

He’s not wrong.

55

u/NorthernSkeptic Oct 16 '25

disturbing number of people here trying to ‘WELL AKSHUALLY’ an 8 year old who is developing a normal conscience

86

u/ozias_leduc Oct 16 '25

lots of meat eaters getting triggered here

37

u/Undertheoceandragons Oct 16 '25

They get extremely triggered anytime there’s ANY social media post about veganism/vegetarianism/anti-meat eating. And it’s normal that they do, they have a lot of guilt and don’t know what to do with those feelings so they get angry or offensive or joke about it to try and cope and forget about the reality of what they’re paying for and to instead, reinstate the black and white thought of ‘meat good, I am man, meat good’ that has been ingrained in them by the nonstop advertising and propaganda they’ve been forced to consume by animal agriculture their whole lives. They don’t know what to do when this is challenged and find comfort in doubling down instead of trying to comprehend empathy which takes more effort.

13

u/ozias_leduc Oct 16 '25

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is in a nutshell why people hate anything they deem as "woke" - they basically feel attacked. And rather than pause to interrogate these feelings, they just get angry.

11

u/SuperstarDJay Oct 16 '25

I don't know that it's guilt. From the Americans at least, it seems to be political like pretty much everything else these days. Eating meat = patriotic, masculine, MAGA, etc. Vegetarian = woke emasculated lefties.

13

u/Undertheoceandragons Oct 16 '25

Yes for sure! That is a big issue, also fuelled by life long propaganda. Not just American too, think about Invasion Day ads saying “It’s unaustralian if you don’t eat lamb on Australia Day”… Real men protect the innocent, IMHO.

It makes sense to reduce a behaviour that you’ve learned causes some kind of harm, even if you get no personal reward. Just like doing more of something that benefits something/one other than yourself. That’s kindness.

My 2¢: Don’t feel bad for eating meat, make small changes here and there. Tiny individual efforts add up massively.

I have a completely half baked theory on how we could reduce beef consumption.

If we start farming more kangaroos, land doesn't have to be cleared for paddocks, and their feet are unhooved, so they dont destroy the land so much.

They are lean and fairly similar to beef, however can get overcooked quite easily and have a stronger flavour that some people may not like. (Im sure they could get used to it eventually, kangaroo mince in a bolognese sauce tastes exactly like beef)

Kangaroo leather is one of the strongest leathers in its weight class.

I cant think of too many drawbacks other than maybe less meat on a kangaroo and how to keep them all kinda in the one spot.

But we could all do with less meat in our diets, if we all ate meat-free for one day a week, then meat consumption is dropped by 1/7, ~ 15%

9

u/martylindleyart Oct 16 '25

"How about instead of killing this animal, we kill this one instead."

12

u/plsendmysufferring Oct 16 '25

Yeah, how about we stop breeding animals that destroy the environment in favour of animals with less impact?

4

u/martylindleyart Oct 16 '25

Or how about none of the above? Mind blown. Wowsers.

6

u/plsendmysufferring Oct 16 '25

2

u/Silverboax Oct 16 '25

Efficiency. We domesticate animals for the same reason we farm crops (which is also terrible for the environment and for biodiversity but the snooty vegans don't like to talk about that,) its more cost efficient since food is shipped worldwide these days so the more you can farm for the lowest price, the more money you make (and at the ground level farming and ranching aren't things that'll make you rich, they make other companies rich further up the chain.)

tl;dr people suck whether they're meat munchers or vegetarians or vegans.

Let's fully radicalise him.

22

u/NorthernSkeptic Oct 16 '25

let’s give Devon jus a little more time before they have to realise the true horror of the world

10

u/CanadianBadass Oct 16 '25 edited Oct 16 '25

Sure, corporations create crazy amount of greenhouse gases, but let's not ignore what a collective can do, right now. Going vegan is the #1 thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. It's estimated it can reduce global GHG by at least 38% - that's the Paris Climate Accord and then some in one fell swoop, if everyone becomes vegan overnight, let alone the massive swaths of lands that will be saved for regreening/carbon sink and the billions of animals not killed on an almost daily basis.

So yeah, por que no los dos?

3

u/astrobarn Oct 16 '25

The number 1 thing you can do to effectively decrease your carbon footprint is to not procreate.

2

u/Drofreg Oct 17 '25

C'mon brah! Why you gotta ruin the party like that? No one wants to ruin the illusion that us little folk have influence over the world under capitalism🥳

1

u/astrobarn Oct 17 '25

It's a beautiful dream, absolving the greatest villains by shifting the blame and responsibility.

I think a lot of people think I'm therefore advocating for apathy, which is not true. I still do everything I can, but it's a drop in the ocean.

2

u/Drofreg Oct 17 '25

For real. I actually think the anti meat focus of climate change is particularly harmful to the cause as it acts as a hail Mary pressure vent which allows us all to stay invested in all the other carbon intensive conveniences. You too can have a clear conscience as long as you eat a little less meat

Okay and who do those corporations cater to? Are you really going to act like most people in privileged countries like ours don't have consumer choice?

Ironically eating more Devon results in less wasted animals.

Guyt named after processed Meat Roll calls for less consumption of him

Ironic that the poor kid is named after cheap lunch meat.

The irony that he is called Devon, ie. processed Sandwich meat

5

u/rhinobin Oct 16 '25

Let’s face it, Devon probably has little meat in it 😂

It's probably meme material printed off the net and posted on a wall. Memes usually contain such a contradictory anomaly as 'a vegan named Devon' to generate controversy. But to add confusion make him almost vegan, so we can't simply argue one side or another.

I'd be amazed if his parents weren't vegan and didn't have 100% to do with this

1

u/Raffybaby Oct 16 '25

Deal!

I’ll commit to eating a little less meat just for you Devon!

The irony is the poor kid has a name which is type of emulsified sausage used as a luncheon! 😂

u/Convenientjellybean Oct 16 '25

u/MDInvesting Oct 16 '25

Devon, being anti-meat.

1

u/SkittleMonk3y Oct 16 '25

Lol, devon like the highly process meat🤣

1

u/Jadel210 Oct 16 '25

Don’t worry, there’s no meat in Devon.

I remember in grade 4 during lunch finding out that beef came from a cow. I did not eat that delicious lunch and threw it away.

However, it look only a few days for me to not associate a dead cow with beef and pretty much forget it, cause food with meat was too delicious especially when I was already a picky eater.

Do the animals flatulate more or less after they are consumed Devon?
