Personally I have a rule about couples in my dnd group. Either the game has to be a one off, or the relationship has to be super serious. I've had way too many groups derailed because someone absolutely had to have their new boyfriend or girlfriend join. They pick an important role, I try to give them some new player spotlight with a plot arc and everything, but then they break up.
Last time a friend argued me into letting him bring his boyfriend, the group devolved into a group therapy session afterwards. I rewrote the ex's character to be a (literal) rat fucking villain.
I mean to be fair the guy in the example was a dick.
But also it's weird for an ex to continue to be in a dnd group that meets weekly or biweekly. Being friends with your ex is something that usually takes at least some space, but if I am committing to running a game every other week, I have to keep the momentum. Like if we have to skip two sessions that's like a whole month.
