Ruined by Technology Stupid AI is taking over everything way too fast.

Post image

This is at a local fair I was at this weekend. It definitely infringes on copyrights.

Is there a subreddit dedicated to these airbrush fever dreams saddling a ride made for puking? If there isn't there should be.

32

u/I_am_Unk Sep 06 '26

I'm not sure, but there should be!

95

u/mapotoful Sep 06 '26

I love how this style has essentially become folk art in the wake of AI slop.

55

u/GremlinSquishFace47 Sep 06 '26

I have developed such an appreciation for ALL kinds of art made by humans at this point. I genuinely love to see extremely amateurish art with odd proportions. You’re right that these air brush carnival paintings now qualify as folk art. Give me the weirdest, strangest outsider art, please, my eyes and brain need it! I remember when AI “art” first started taking over, someone said that we are now able to prove that humans have a soul… you can see it and feel it in all types of art. It is noticeably lacking in what AI produces (visual art, music, writing, etc).

I really hate the new trend I’ve seen pop up where a business makes a simple flyer, drawn in crayon, saying “hey at least we didn’t use AI for this”… but their flyer is clearly AI just drawn in a simple crayon style 🤦‍♀️ just make the crayon flyer yourself! The whole point is that it looks simple and amateurish! If you use AI it’s always detectable 😠

30

u/Tricky-Ad7897 Sep 06 '26

Man yeah you used to see some insane airbrushed art at carnivals.

The teddy bear on the left is the subject of multiple video games and movies. They definitely do not have permission to depict it

People obviously have issues differentiating a statement of fact from some sort of deeply passionate remark

160

u/LikeALincolnLog42 Sep 06 '26

To be fair, all the traveling funhouses I’ve ever seen were always covered in bootleg characters. They used to be painted by a human using an airbrush though.

56

u/14Pleiadians Sep 06 '26

Seriously, the only thing infuriating about this is the slop. Complaining about copyright infringement is some soulless businessman shit though, sure thing Disney.

6

u/jhascal23 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Most people here literally don't care, at all. I saw someone post on reddit that they opened a magazine and one of the models was AI generated and not a actual paid model.

I understand its taking peoples jobs, so unless you're in a field where your job was taken by AI, most people don't actually care and will forget about this in 5 minutes.

3

u/Bircka Sep 06 '26

You can also find plenty of low quality bootleg plushies as prizes for the games.

The part that baffles me the most is that if they were going to do this with both AI and blatant copyright infringement, why did they make most of it so generic?

25

u/thehelldoesthatmean Sep 06 '26

It's a traveling fair. It was probably made by the receptionist who has one arm and 13 DUIs.

4

u/Creative-Captain9278 TEAL Sep 06 '26

They don't, its because AI was used. That's why they care.

10

u/14Pleiadians Sep 06 '26

Who gives a shit? Carnies have been using unlicensed material for decades.

I get it if you want to complain about it being slop, I'm fully behind that, but "wahhh they didn't license that likeliness" is such a lame critique. Pay someone with actual talent to make the unlicensed art should be the critique.

5

u/ExceptionEX Sep 06 '26

Actually the creator and copyright holder of FNAF is pretty relaxed about his copyright, and really only concerns himself with direct asset usage, this is at best a derivative work.

People loose their mind over what they think is a big copyright issue, when in reality it isn't even worth the effort to attempt to bring legal action over it.

Its from a game called Five Nights at Freddie's.

Pretty simple pc game thats the basic playground game red light/green light.

But its a horror game, set in an abandoned chucky cheese style restaurant where you're the security guard watching over the murderous animatronics that move when you're not looking at them.

The game should not be introduced to kids young enough, that this ride would be targeted at.

Im a grown man, and it gave me nightmares.

66

u/0freelancer0 Sep 06 '26

dude kids are the majority of the player base for these games. I've seen SO many fnaf toys. they're not really gorey at all, it's mostly just a time management simulator with jumpscares

21

u/stardigan Sep 06 '26

Honestly, all of the games up to the most recent one (Secret of the Mimic) are pretty much fine for a kid who can handle a jumpscare. The story would go right over their heads. The movies are more intense, but tame for a horror movie. The books, though, are absolutely horrifying.

18

u/not_a_moogle Sep 06 '26

Yeah, but like over 11 or 12.

Like should I have been playing doom in 3rd grade? Probably not.

6

I only recently learned there’s a difference between bootleg and counterfeit. A counterfeit is trying to be an exact copy of he real thing, whereas a bootleg is more like on homage, using the well known IP but in a relatively new way. Which I think is why I like bootleg carny art, it at least brings something new and weird

32

u/Goldeniccarus RED Sep 06 '26

Oh so like a Mucci bag is a counterfeit, but a t-shirt that says "If you see 'da police Warn a Brotha" with a drawing of Daffy Duck smoking a blunt is a bootleg?

25

u/DED_HAMPSTER Sep 06 '26

Lippy's explaination isnt quite right regarding counterfeit vs bootleg.

"Bootleg" is more like a bad quality counterfeit. It is intended to be a replacement of the original more to cheat someone or grab some of the profit by selling inferior products. A good example would be something like Disney's Frozen movie:

1.) Original - Disney's Frozen on DVD bought through an official retailer like Wal-Mart.

2.) Counterfeit - Someone selling movie theater screen recordings of Frozen and buring them to DVD and using low resolution stolen images from Disney's website to print the DVD cases and advertise them as real Disney DVDs.

3.) Bootleg - would be the discount general store's $3 DVDs of "The Ice Queen " the has similar charachers in the same poses on the cover, is animated with Flash rather than 3D rendering, and is only 30 minutes long instead of 90 minutes.

And one more...

3.) Transformative Art - This is where parody, homage lies. This would be the fanart of Elsa and Rise of the Guardiens, Jack Frost paring up sold on tshirts, mugs etc on Etsy. Or someone using Olaf to make a Global Warming poster. Or a you tuber making a commentary video. None of this is trying to actually be the product. They are peripheral products of the influence the movie had on current culture.

As for the legality of transformative art against copyright laws and rights, thats more complicated...

9

u/sender2bender Sep 06 '26

Growing up in the 90s and 00s bootleg CDs were still the original artist just unreleased. Just mix tapes and the quality wasn't the greatest. I remember buying g unit bootlegs like every week at the corner store. But the bootleg man would sell bootleg DVDs which were the actual movie but you didn't know what you were getting, cam recordings with people walking past the screen or something legit. It was all kinda under the same umbrella even if it was counterfeit. And then it slowly disappeared with the Internet.

5

u/nhalliday Sep 06 '26

Like many groupings of similar terms, while these definitions might be the intended meaning for some people (or even in a dictionary), not everyone uses them this way so it's pointless to try to be pedantic about which is which. See also the difference between remake and remaster for games.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/alphazero925 Sep 06 '26

That's definitely not a widespread split in the definition as anyone who grew up in the 80s, 90s, and 00s will know a "bootleg" of something to be a cheap, usually low quality, usually homemade copy of it. For example, if The Matrix was in theaters and you bought a bootleg copy of it, it would be a burned DVD with "The Matrix" written on it in sharpie, and it was just a dude videotaping the screen on a camera he snuck into the theater.

117

u/Ok_Pipe_2790 Sep 06 '26

And its usually always 50% light and 50% dark. You can't get a solid color out of it

70

u/western_red_cedar Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

They still haven't gotten rid of the obvious shit gloss that makes your brain process it as obvious shit AI in a second, and I find this encouraging because according to the AI boosters they got rid of that 5 iterations ago

32

u/14Pleiadians Sep 06 '26

I mean they pretty much did. The issue is the type of person to use AI isn't the type of person to tinker and figure out how to make anything worthwhile because the goal for them is to do no effort at all, and they have no taste so they somehow don't see the slop

10

u/western_red_cedar Sep 06 '26

Like I said slop merchants keep saying this and it keeps not being true, your slop is obvious no matter how well done you think it is

4

u/ChilternRailways Sep 06 '26

What a great way to ensure you'll be easily tricked by quality AI art. Genuinely, there is nothing more stupid than convincing yourself you can't be fooled, it makes you an easy mark in all areas.

It's already happening with literature.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0kmpd6lr80o

And just on a fundamental, critical thinking level - anything that can be identified as a marker can be mitigated by the designer. You aren't somehow the best person in the world at detecting these markers, but you and a lot of others are absolutely ensuring that you will be easily fooled.

3

u/jibbodahibbo Sep 06 '26

I think there’s a near unlimited amount of visual details our brains interpret and sure you can fool some people some of the time, but I don’t expect ai to be perfect any time soon

Carnival ride art used to be fun and weird and interesting. It had already fallen off in the era of just swiping a bunch of pictures from a Google image search, but the rapid shift to entirely AI-generated imagery has killed the artform once and for all. It’s disheartening.

33

u/certnneed Sep 06 '26

The awkward part is, if they had included in their prompt, “make it in the style of a nostalgic carnival advertisement”…

6

u/Winter-Steak-1532 Sep 06 '26

In 40 years.. The prompt of "Nostalgic carnival advertisement" will be the hideous AI imagery and posters of 2026! (as pictured in this post)

9

u/DisastrousChapter841 Sep 06 '26

I worked at an events space (large American city) last year that hosted a big fundraiser with a circus theme. These images look almost exactly the same but with children.

The organizers of this event had all of these different circus "characters" in various posters, signs, etc., and the one thing I noticed immediately was that they were all white, and they could have all been siblings, just very little variation. And I feel as though if they had a human with art experience in the loop, that could have been prevented.

A lot of the staff and people in that industry are not white, so it felt like a big f you.

It's pretty twisted to think the kids born in the 2020s will likely be desensitized to it as it seems so much artwork is cheaply made with AI for children. It will be on their media, in their schools, places like this. Wonder if it will result in them not caring at all by the time they are older and it truly takes over once their generation grows up.

101

u/Dreaming_of_Rlyeh Sep 05 '26

18

u/GeneralRando Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Will it? From what I've seen it's the younger generations who are more averse to soulless, meaningless AI slop, and the Boomers who are chomping at the bit to devour that shit.

I think the younger generations will resist it just like they're getting back into digital cameras and CDs.

If you thought The Algorithm was bad for your health when it was shoving exclusively human content down your throat, consider the toxicity of an Algorithm that can generate fake made up bullshit on the spot and keep you locked into a doomscroll that's completely divorced from anything resembling reality.

My older relatives are constantly immersed in Facebook slop, and when I tell them its AI they'll say "whatever I just thought it was interesting". ...BUT WHY? If someone uses AI for a flyer or a logo, I at least understand why. It's lazy, but it's fulfilling a need. When meemaw burns hours watching AI reels of fake shit that never happened, what the fuck is the point?

168

u/Wboy2006 WHY?! Sep 05 '26

It’s royalty free. A lot of carnaval rides are made on the cheap and are usually made with stolen assets anyways. This was always the logical next step, since now companies can’t sue over copyright infringement. It’s horrible, the carnaval’s in my town have been flooded with this crap

29

u/RunnerBakerDesigner Sep 06 '26

5

u/nhalliday Sep 06 '26

2

u/_MUY Sep 06 '26

It absolutely is. Training is a transformative process that American intellectual property analogizes to human learning. If AI companies had to pay money for training generative AI systems on assets found publicly online, then you would have to pay for every time you saw anything online. You just read my copyrighted paragraph on Reddit. That’ll be $7.

3

u/bombjon Sep 06 '26

It's neither legal nor illegal as of yet. The courts are still figuring out the legality of using copyrighted material for AI training data.

"Found publicly online" is not part of that debate, at all.

Whether they think it’s higher quality varies on the individual: I’ve seen people who don’t like the end results as much as art made by a human but are only concerned with budget and speed, and I’ve seen AI loyalists who think the images it produces is the pinnacle of visual design.

The issue wasn't the materials apparently but the cost of the artist, now that the artist is just chat gpt all they have to pay for is the materials

7

u/EthanielRain Sep 06 '26

The corporations that own the companies that own the businesses that own these things, have pumped a lot into AI

Christ that is hideously garish. One of the worst ones I've seen

28

u/fiercebanana Sep 05 '26

Exit to reality, points to AI slop image

30

u/Gizmopopapalus Sep 05 '26

People need to stop using their kids in ai slop. Especially after what that federal judge ruled.

20

u/Dankey_kang91 Sep 05 '26

Please can I?

19

u/Riley__64 Sep 06 '26

Where’s the topless women, members of kiss, Spider-Man, Batman, minions, Mickey Mouse and miscellaneous looney tunes characters that have nothing to do with the ride

15

u/Mazasaurus Sep 05 '26

Ah yes, Fur Ausements, copyright infringement and a haunted ass carousel where people appear to be animorphing into horses with too many legs. I’ll take exit to reality, thanks.

13

u/ProbioticOnARobotic Sep 05 '26

Let's just be real. We hate paying artists.

5

u/Frostborn1990 Sep 06 '26

They. Not we, they

5

u/Neon_Camouflage Sep 06 '26

People do tend to hate paying for something they can get for free.

4

u/FourPlayInTheBay Sep 06 '26

it's because getting custom made art is otherwise an expensive and time consuming (relatively) to just talking to chat for a few minutes.

9

u/NieMonD Sep 05 '26

You think they’re gonna PAY? An ARTIST? With MONEY? Preposterous!

Nooo! I've always loved the airbrush art on carnival rides 😭

I prefer the copyright infringement to be hand painted on the side of the attraction. This is bullshit.

9

u/Background-Set4610 Sep 05 '26

Saw a lot of carnival games with AI branding like that at the fair near me, I didn’t go to any of them. I’m not giving my money to a dumb game with “art” they couldn’t even hire a real human to make.

20

u/Boxing_joshing111 Sep 05 '26

Part of the charm of these carnivals is seeing a tilt-a-wheel covered in the most ridiculous airbrushed paintings.

8

u/Bignholy Sep 06 '26

Yep. AI slop is blandifying the world as hard as possible. Why accept the charming, weird little things, when you can have free hi-res abomination art? Why go through the trouble of taking photos of the food on your menu when you can just slop together some Chicken Chow Maggot, or whatever the hell the slop machine decides your food optimally looks like? Why the weird incredible hulk with the squashed head hand painted by a dude who enjoyed the hell out of the challenge when you can have creepy soulless children with exceedingly busy backgrounds and motherfucking horror monsters slopped out at no cost to you?

I go to the fair frequently when its in season and yeah the past 2 years its been absolutely full of ai garbage on all the rides, foodtrucks and even people selling ai t shirts and shit. It really fucking sucks. There was a haunted house at one of the fairs this year one of the ones where you sit in the car. And instead of any practical effects or anything it was just playing shitty ai videos on a projector.

5

u/Screen_TimeR i am mildly infuriated at the fact that the "RED" flair is blue. Sep 06 '26

if i was a kid and i saw this i would not enter that thing

I just left a farmers market. 90% off the food vendors that had photos of food on their menu used Ai to make the food. I refuse to eat anyplace that uses Ai food photos.

OMG I see the Gravatron is still going strong in the left part of the picture. That spaceship has been renamed so many times over the years.

2

u/Yaboisanka Sep 06 '26

The AI sucks but I believe I see a gravitron on the left ... I'll be upside down in that for the afternoon.

2

u/Astolfomartel Sep 06 '26

AI generated adverts should be an official reason to shut down any business being inspected.

2

u/flob_v2 Sep 06 '26

Yes my child, enter the slop house

2

u/MagicCurtis Sep 06 '26

Sadly Ai is cheaper, which means more profit to be made

2

u/Clear_Writer5944 Sep 06 '26

OOF. That's scarier than the TERRIFYING "Wizard's World" "funhouse" we had at The Erie County Fair in the late 80s/early 90s with a wizard who's loooong beard had naked chicks tangled in it! HORRIFYING as a toddler then kiddo, but this is uncanny valley crap.

2

u/Mother-Attention2600 Sep 06 '26

It looks like shit and why is everything little kids. Yuck.

Edit: No wonder... It's "Ayden's" play house. All Aydens are fucked up criminals but not aa bad as Jayden's.

2

u/BuckalooMcGee Sep 06 '26

No way this punk ass named their kid ayden

2

u/AccomplishedSugar490 Sep 06 '26

Are you sure it’s AI taking over rather than people using AI to do stuff they shouldn’t?

3

u/hoofie242 Sep 05 '26

I saw this in another post but at night.

4

u/kencam Sep 06 '26

Oh no what will the world's worst airbrush artists do now?

2

u/Bitcoin1x Sep 06 '26

These kinds of carnival decorations infringed on copyrights before AI.. Also who's to say that the amusement company doesn't have a licensing deal? You don't get to make the rules...

This makes me sad in a way I can't even express. There's literally no soul to it. Is this the death of art??

4

u/Made_Human_Music Sep 06 '26

Yes, AI art on a local fair ride is the death of art. Do you people even listen to yourselves?

4

u/Jens1la Sep 06 '26

2

u/snowdn Sep 05 '26

I hope AI art is just a 20’s trend.

2

u/snewchybewchies Sep 06 '26

She the thing is, that ride probably isn't brand new. They took down the art they had there and replaced it with this slop

2

u/keithstonee Sep 06 '26

boycott anything using AI

2

u/aPOPblops Sep 06 '26

Oh no not our shitty death trap fair rides!

2

u/russellamcleod Sep 06 '26

I still have an obsession with the beautiful art carnival rides had in the 80s and 90s. The unhinged airbrush art that jumped from touring vans to the midway.

I wish someone cared as much and preserved it all in a museum somewhere but I looked it up and no one else really cared the way I do.

I still remember the first time I laid eyes on the hedonistic panorama that graced the Crazy Dance backdrop. I was obsessed.

2

u/Danidaivido BLUE Sep 06 '26

I’m heavily invested in this subplot

2

u/ArtisticPersonaliTea Sep 06 '26

“Fur Ausements”

“Fun & Des”

2

u/Ok-Advantage4191 Sep 06 '26

Of course the parents who bought this named their kid "Ayden"

I was just at a carnival that had an intricate hand painted one of these with so many Easter eggs hidden across it. It was magnificent and just magic.

NO ONE WANTS THIS

2

u/dahsoleppy Sep 06 '26

I used to love the wierd art, random popstars and celebrities on these types of fair attractions. I hate AI

2

u/Bearded-Menace Sep 06 '26

Carnivals used to have hand painted signs now it’s just AI garbage even the food trucks
