I’ll walk up with earbuds in pretending I don’t notice them and grab ones they’re not actively using. Don’t give them attention it’s like dealing with children

31

u/thescrapplekid Sep 10 '26

I do this when someone tries to use multiple machines at once. I'll walk up to the unoccupied one. Pre Clean it and set it up for myself. Not saying a word. Earbuds in. I haven't had pushback yet

13

u/Smvlikbutta Sep 11 '26

I do the same. They won't say anything because they know they're wrong. I also walk up to people sitting on machines on their phones and ask them how many more sets do they have. I hate the rudeness of just being selfish like it's your home gym.

I had a dude take a 45 off my bar when I was using an incline barbell bench. Finished my set and I as sitting there drinking my water and dude just took a 45 off the bar. Some people are just dicks

19

u/chi11ax Sep 10 '26

Some guy did this to me on the leg press. Took the weight right off the machine as soon as I locked the rack. I just ran up to him and demanded he return the weight.

Pick em up and use em. Alert the staff if they say anything. It’s a shared space that you all pay for. People do this shit because others let them.

2.5k

u/mono__no___aware Sep 09 '26

Absolutely. They are one of the most insufferable types of people. Plus, they usually stop coming to the gym after a few months.

867

u/FullofLovingSpite Sep 09 '26

They will absolutely quit. Losers like that get bullied out, too. Which is acceptable because they're doing their best to bully others.

227

u/mono__no___aware Sep 09 '26

Their sole aim is to show off; it is only in this way that they can make their existence visible. Formalism strikes me as one of the most pathetic complexes.

44

u/USSMcCoy Sep 09 '26

When you're in the gym, all words that end in an "O" sound must be bro.

Therefore, these guys are broing off, if you bro what I mean, and I bet they workout prettly broly.

I did try going to the gym for a while.

I gave up when there was always this group of three people who would monopolize all of the equipment.

“Hey, can I work a set in?”

“No. We are using it.” While they are actively on a different machine.

And the staff did nothing about it. This went one for a few sessions, then I just gave up. Cancelled. Will not go back no matter how many times they send me emails/sms asking me to rejoin.

8

u/BellyButtonFungus Sep 10 '26

Yeah I just hop on the one not in use and slap my earbuds in. Let them be the wanker who walks over and makes a stranger take out their earbuds, to explain how a machine they weren't on was "in use".

I just stare at them and put my earbuds back in. After a couple of seconds they usually realise that the "no actually i had dibs on that" attitude doesn't fly as an adult.

And if you aren't able to get staff before the guy really starts something, you are now armed with an extremely dense and heavy blunt object.

Obviously I'm not saying you should beat the snot out of the guy, just protect yourself against assault.

I've definitely taken dumbbells while making hard eye contact. I had an incident similar to this many years ago. Gym rat monopolized all the weights and left them on the floor. When he left somewhere else leaving all the dumbbells on the floor, I helped myself to the one set I needed.

Minutes later, he came back informing me he was still using the weights. I told him bluntly "no you weren't. There are plenty other dumbbells you left on the floor you can use."

He complained to a gym employee. Employee came over while I was still there, saw his mess informed him of gym policy of checking-out one set of weights at a time and to place all the dumbbells back on the rack or lose his membership. I didn't have to say a word and just quietly enjoyed him being humbled.

Some people are just so oblivious and don't care. If he's that sloppy at the gym, his own place must be disgusting.

363

u/vivalaroja2010 Sep 10 '26

When you finished with "his" dumbbells you should have offered them to him: "Hey im done with these, need them back?"

He would have blown a gasket....

16

u/Gigantkranion Sep 10 '26

I wouldn't have even done that.

I would have pretended that I didn't hear the staff and just drop them back off at his feet and at most say,

"Here you go, I'm done with them."

58

u/RadicalRealist22 Sep 10 '26

I remember when I was young amd in a gym employee wanted to help menwith the bench press. Some other "hot shot" left his weightscon the bar, so the employee sent me to ask him to remove them. The fool tried to mock me for being to weak to lift the weights, and the employee told him to clean up the weights or gtfo. Sweet karma.

9

u/Tacky-Terangreal Sep 10 '26

People who leave multiple 45’s on the machines are the biggest chodes on the planet. If you can’t put your weights away, you’re lifting too heavy

32

u/helipad668 Sep 10 '26

I also hate HATE the people who leave their water bottle on a machine and go somewhere else talking to there buddy’s for 5 minutes and when you try to use it they rush back and say they were using it while pointing to their water bottle, almost got into a fight with someone while he left his wrist wraps on the cable machine and was doing a different exercise on the other side of the gym talking to his friend, I wanted to rip his fucking head off when he came back and told me he was “using it” I was pissed, I’m alway nice to people and let them work in but these pieces of shit have no respect or gym etiquette

19

u/wolfmanportalberni Sep 10 '26

Is this some time of power move that people think they're doing in their little gym soap opera in their head? I had something similar. I went to use a bench and some guy said he was using it so I got up and went to go do tri-cep pull-downs and the same guy comes up to me during my set and tells me "I still have two sets left on that." So I just plainly asked "So you're on that bench so I can't use it but you're using this too so I can't use it?" He just looked at me like I was an asshole and then walked off and used a different machine. Maybe he was super setting? Either way, you don't get to call dibs on multiple machines.

9

u/SkeyFG Sep 10 '26

To put the weights back on the rack or lose his membership. Served cold. This is the way tho. Nice fitness policy 👍

3.4k

Yeah… Asking validates their behavior. Don’t ask. Let them cry about it to staff, I’m sure they’ll love it.

86

u/grantrules Sep 10 '26

I usually do a "Mind if I grab this?" as I'm grabbing it. Like.. it's not really a question.. it's leaving now.. just wondering if you mind. If they're like "yeah I do mind" then just say "K I'll be right back with it" then fuck off

32

u/Salt_Cash706 Sep 10 '26

u/OSTBear Sep 10 '26

Ooooh I like that.

84

u/Grundlestorm Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26

If you have more than 3 pairs,  absolute max, you're just being an asshole and don't need them all and I have no qualms with picking them up and using them.

Maybe, maaaybe you are tri-setting and do need all 3 pairs.  But these types never are, they're usually doing as much just sitting as working out, and the equipment is just on the floor

I can grab those 30s off of the floor and do my 3-4 sets and put them back before they would ever use them anyway.

58

u/OSTBear Sep 09 '26

I mean... Here's the thing, when I was wrestling I used to do that stuff, but really... Taking 10 seconds to go get another set? Even if I got to go 5 lb lower? It's not that big a deal. You're sharing a gym with 30 plus people? Have some goddamn decency.

If you leave gym equipment unattended for 30 seconds then I’m using it/taking it. Some of us don’t have 3 hours to spend at the gym.

28

u/anonstarcity Sep 09 '26

Absolutely. Been lifting more than 20 years, if someone is hogging weights or equipment just be polite but assertive and take it. If they’re truly doing some sort of superset, then they should be willing to go at 5am when nobody’s there, it’s perfect for that shit.

u/MONSTERBEARMAN Sep 09 '26

At most I will take two sets of dumbells and that heavily depends on how busy the gym is and if the other set of the same weight is in use or not.

My gym has two of every weight from 5-80lb. After that they only have 1 set

27

u/WKU-Alum Sep 09 '26

This is the way. I can super set if space and equipment allows, but not at the expense of others. My personal favorites are the folks running a circuit on every chest machine in the place and get all haughty when they come back after 15 mins and you’re on “their machine”.

mummy usually ties his laces for him, and picks up after him, that's why he doesn't know he's supposed to put weights away

Isn’t that when you call gym staff?

You've got 2 options here, chief:

  1. You put on your big boy pants and just pick up the dumbbells you want. What are they going to do about it?

  2. You go get the staff to intervene. They're breaking the rules and you paid to be there, someone will take care of it if you are too much of a coward to assert yourself.

I'd personally go with option 3:

  1. Seethe quietly to myself and then give up because I need to avoid social interaction at all costs.

Just take them or tattle, lol

u/Repulsive-Rock4234 Sep 09 '26

They should have their membership revoked.

In a true powerlifting gym they would get physically thrown out the door

Just walk over and take what you needed and track properly when you’re finished. If you’ve got any farts in the chamber, this seems like a good time to use them.

Edit: rack not track
Thanks for the award, kind stranger. I had brussel sprouts last night so the topic was on my mind.

“Wouldn’t share” makes absolutely zero sense. Just go grab what you want. Wtf are they gonna do?

u/Sensate613 Sep 09 '26

Dont ask. Dont talk. Just go take what you want. They are not private weights.

11

u/BigSpud41 Sep 09 '26

What happens if you just go take the ones you need without comment?

12

u/SuperbDonut2112 Sep 09 '26

You have the weights you need and they don’t do shit.

Not only are they selfish pricks, they’re complete slobs. That workout area is a disaster and a tripping hazard for anybody nearby

YOURE NOT PART OF THE TURBO TEAM

What do you expect from a child who can’t even tie there shoelaces.

7

u/Shankar_0 Enraged, but to a tasteful level Sep 09 '26

Walk up and take anything he's not currently holding.

There's no "dibs" in a gym.

8

u/Hot_Dog2376 Sep 09 '26

That's cute. You can't hoard the weights. Its like people "reserving" 5 machines. Nah, I'm just gonna use it. If they demand it back, I hit them with the Canadian "Yeahhh, naww."

4

u/letslickmyballs Sep 10 '26

Just fucking take em. What are they gonna do?

6

u/nature-in-patterns Sep 10 '26

I only see two dumbells

6

u/libraryofweird Sep 12 '26

Not to be a Karen here, but alert the gym manager. If they don’t straighten out this behavior, find a new gym

3

u/Gliese_667_Cc Sep 09 '26

Tell the gym staff, not reddit. Or go take them. One person can only use two dumbbells at once.

4

u/limbodog Sep 09 '26

Usually gyms have rules against that and the person would get spoken to.

3

u/jaykube_01 Sep 09 '26

Stare at them grab them “I’m taking these” walkaway

3

u/TacoLvR- Sep 09 '26

Tell staff after you take the dumbbells you need.

4

u/Iminurcomputer Sep 09 '26

I have spent a lot of time in the gym. Probably way more time than my appearance would show. But this isnt about my insecurities...

Its about theirs. I haven't seen this but I have seen a lot of tools grab weights and lift them like 2 ft or less from the dumbell rack. I just go right into them, get close enough to show them they're in the way BUT not close enough Im getting in their personal space. There's a difference.

A very few times these people have said anything. I didn't need to come up with anything. I didnt need to construct a supreme court argument... I say, "I was getting the fuckin weights I needed. How is this a problem for you?"

Thats it. Dont need to be antagonistic. Dont need to be a tough guy. Just be very clear about what your right are an exercise (no pun intended) them. In my experience 100 out of 100 of these people are scared, insecure people and wont DO A DAMN THING about anything.

*Or, worst case, the gym has cameras, the person assaults you, get a lawyer and absolutely dick down their financial future. Idk about yall but I'll gladly get hit for a good settlement. Or, maybe I get hit and nothing happens but that miserable asshole will have a TON of shit to deal with while I get high and play with my cats

3

u/V-Rixxo_ Sep 10 '26

Man if you dont take that shit from them 🤣 The fuck they gone do

4

u/Rengar_Is_Good_kitty Sep 10 '26

Tell the staff? And if the staff do nothing about it, tell them you're never coming back to that gym and walk out. Pretty simple really. Either that or walk up and grab them yourself.

5

u/FreddyNewandyke Sep 10 '26

What the fuck are those shoes? They aren't even tied up! What a dunce.

4

u/AdnamannyL11 Sep 10 '26

As someone who used to be a trainer and manage gyms, take them. I’m sorry guys but you are NOT using all of these unless every single set you’re doing for your whole workout is a drop set. If you want to hoard the weights, buy your own and set up a gym in your garage, then you can invite all the friends you want and talk for hours without being rude as hell.
