Do u dont wanna First got scolded for pressing and holding the button, then for pressing and releasing the button.
I entered this medical faccility twice yesterday and was treated like a dick each time.
First time, I pressed and held. Staff basically said 'Didn't you see the OTHER sign? We're very busy, and holding down the bell while we are juggling tasks and trying to help you is SUPER annoying.'
Next time, I pressed and released, and staff went 'We're very busy. If you don't hold down the button like the sign says, we won't know someone is trying to get in.'

Trying to get into the ER as my father was dying (turns out was brain dead super fun) and they had a door like this.
I explain maybe twice who I am, what room I’m going, and the patient name.
Nurse continues to be an ass about it. I start hearing more voices in the back
I say why don’t you open the door and I’ll handle it since it seems I have a better sense of what’s going on than you.
Another nurse flings the door open and says “ignore her, go, run to the room right now”
God bless that second nurse man, because I was ready to try and rip through the doors

Sure, but there's always someone who likes to read reviews for fun and I'm sure they'd get a giggle out of that.

There's a fancy block of luxury flats near me that always had 2-3 star reviews. One time, the score suddenly spiked. I looked at the reviews and someone accidentally spilled that the place was entering residents who left a positive review into a prize draw to win a £100 Amazon voucher.

“Hey so sorry to bother you but your signs to get inside are contradicting and your staff gave me contradicting instructions and it was frustrating blah blah blah”
As opposed to “hey fix your signs at the door and train your staff how to actually read them and treat customers with respect”
You can respond how you want to things, I’ve learned through trauma not to be ashamed of the emotions others cause in me. It’s not a flaw in me. It’s something they cause and human reactions are human. Someone can be shitty and you’re not the asshole for getting mad about it. In fact, I think it’s the right thing to do at this point. People are awful and nobody cares. I at least care and call people out.
14
u/Sandene 21d ago
Being ashamed of feeling that people caused in you and treating other people that have nothing to do with those feelings like shit are two completely different things.
If everyone treated complete strangers shitty because they had trauma, society would collapse. You're supposed to try to learn how to live a normal healthy life by processing it and trying to overcome it, not just sit with it for the rest of your life and make it everyone else's problem3
u/Number13Studios 21d ago
that’s the key here you’re missing. You’re pretending I’d be upset at someone out of control of the situation when the thread we’re discussing is referring to the person causing it and in charge of it so you’re arguing nonsense.
It’s like if someone kicked my dog so I punched them, that’s not projecting. Hope that makes it simple enough for you to understand.
2
u/Sandene 21d ago
But you don't know if the office manager has been replaced a day ago from an outside hire. You don't know the role of the office manager and if he actually controls any of that or if corporate does. That office manager might not have hired any of those people and has zero control over one or all of them because the district manager hired them and they have more pull.
I'm not missing anything, you're assuming everything about this business when you know nothing about it. Trust me, there are plenty of people that are stuck working in crap jobs and have no control of crap situations. If you are going to assume things about businesses and people, you are projecting and you very well could be yelling at someone who has nothing to do with the situation→ More replies (2)21

“At will employment” most likely. Meaning the employer can get rid of you for any reason at all, and it’s all legal because paperwork is signed when hired saying you understand you can be fired for any reason at all (and can also quit for any reason at all without repercussions).

I remember visiting a site which had lots of obnoxious warnings about not removing your payment card too early.
I thought, "why would I do that?".
It turns out their payment card terminal made the same kind of beep that almost every other terminal makes when the payment is complete part way through the process.
Of course, they didn't have any kind of explanation up of that specific fact so of course almost everyone attempts to pay, hears the beep, muscle memory kicks in and you lift the card away, and the staff at the site insist we're all assholes.
15
u/TheFunfighter 19d ago
At the old location of my job, we had a door with card access. Put your card to the scanner, wait for the beep, open door. Except by the time the beep came, the door wasn't unlocked yet, so you'd sort of slam against a closed door, that you were just audibly assured you could push open. Real fun while carrying lunch from the restaurant downstairs. Careful with the soup :)

Reminds of that time when I was a kid, 7 years old. It was winter, snow on the ground and I was in school. Time for recess. We go out, two staff were supervising, one at the door and one out in the play area. Play area lady told me I wasn’t dressed appropriately and needed to go back inside to put on a hat and gloves. I head to the door, only to be stop by the door lady and told I’m not allowed back in until recess is over. So I had back to play area and play area lady again approached me, said I’m not dressed appropriately and need to back inside for hat and gloves. So again I head to the door and be told again I’m not allowed back in. So I once again head back to play area and you guessed it, told to go back and dress appropriately. Got out of this cycle once the bell rang. I don’t know why I didn’t just speak up.

Went to a hospital for XRay, on the door there was a phone number and a note to call it if you want an Xray.

The note was inside the room, you couldn't see the working hours without calling him and getting inside...

At 3am with little to no sleep at a boring job you need to find ways to entertain yourself. This is one of them.
I used to call two CQ desks and make a 3 way call and then mute my phone and listen to them argue and right over who's messing with the phone. Usually it would turn into a race to find out who has the highest ranking individual around who would then yell at the others for a while.

Hospital as well: We had a sign that said "push round button for automatic doors". Button was actually square. We currently have a button located on the other side of closed fire doors that you have to push for a set of doors to radiology to open. Totally inconvenient when pushing a gurney. Who designs this crap?

Medical receptionists are always pushing the limits about how rude and snotty they can be to people. They act like this because the rest of the medical staff doesn’t really consider them medical personnel, but they desperately want the clout of being seen as a medical professional. They know so little about what’s actually going on that they think they have it all figured out and everyone’s dumb except for them.
If it were me, at my next appointment I would stand outside the door and call the front office to be let in, because the doorbell is “too confusing”. Or just knock on the door and pretend I didn’t see the bell. They’re going to act like you’re an idiot no matter what you do, so might as well troll.

u/Rumplestilskin9 22d ago
My Dad had blood cancer and was on blood thinners so any little cut would bleed profusely. He had a fall and hit his head so I rushed him to a local hospital (rural). I told the receptionists what happened and what his situation was and they were like "alright, we'll let them know". 5 or 10 minutes went by while I'm holding a towel to his head and nobody ever came.
Receptionists started laughing about something so I (loudly) told them that I was taking him to the hospital in the next town because "If y'all are going to let him fucking die it'll be on the way to get help, not in the lobby of the hospital". They shut up, left their desk, and some nurses immediately came out. There were a couple other people in the lobby for non emergency appointments who were as pissed as I was about it. Not overcrowded, not under staffed, just gross negligence by the receptionists.
22
u/kikinc14 22d ago
Wow idk what places you've worked at, the past few companies I've worked treated their reception really well, because they have to deal with disgruntled patients more than anyone else. Also any I've known (including myself when I worked front desk) are more than happy to say "that's out of my scope, I'm not a nurse, please hold while I connect you to someone that can answer your question"

I went to a Social Security office many years ago and the security guard yelled at me for following the instructions on the signs. Multiple times. When my number came up and I got up to go the service desk, she yelled at me to sit down. Literally yelled, not just talked mean. The other people in the waiting room kept looking at me, then her, then back at me as if to say "WTF did you do to piss her off so much?"
Some people are just miserable assholes who get off on what little power they have.

u/Knarz97 21d ago
Once I showed up to an office for my 5pm appointment. The door was locked, so I just kind of stood there for a second. Someone walked out so I walked in as the door was open. The receptionists promptly FREAKED out at me wondering why I was there.
“You can’t be here sir”
You locked the door to my appointment that’s right now???
“We close at 5”
So why was I able to make a 5 appointment?????

Drove 3+ hours to get fingerprinted for a job. The sign on the door says in big books angry letters "KNOCK ONLY ONCE - I am very busy and will be with you shortly." So I knock once. After 15 minutes I know again, once. 15 minutes after that I do so again. After 45 minutes in total I knock again for a third time. "Where the hell have you been, you're late for your appointment. I've already closed everything down you'll have to come back tomorrow." Lady, I followed the instructions as written. It's a small office, don't know how you didn't hear me.

Nahhhhhhh, the next move requires quick-dry superglue and a piece of cardboard. But not right away.
Hold down that button. Hold it down. Sit there and silently await their arrival. Then step away and hide when you hear them coming. Wait until they finish checking for you, frustrated, and go back.
But now we don't hold down the button.
Now the REAL game begins. Spam it. Spam the button-- rapidly click that little buzzer until they come again. Flee, hiding once more from their frustration, adding to their boiling hate.
When they leave, unable to find you, you made your way back as quickly and quietly as you can, and hit it ONCE. Then hide again. Go wait.
Spend a few minutes perusing the waiting room.
Then return, SPAM. THAT. BUTTON.
Flee again when they come.
And now?
The Final Act. Get out that superglue. Dump THE MOST HEINOUS amount of glue onto the piece of cardboard, and SMASH the concoction against that button. Then leave. Leave and never return, knowing in your heart that their insufferable headaches, the resulting migraines, will be your greatest victory.

This actually pisses me off so much, like genuinely if I were in that scenario I would be such a piece of shit about it. I genuinely don’t get why they would see this massive fucking contradiction that presumably people have to interact with every fucking day, and not just change the fucking sign? Surely it’s MORE effort to be a dick to everyone that gets confused, than it is to just idk put some fucking tape over the incorrect signage, but tbh I think more likely is that NEITHER of the two signs is correct because probably everyone who works there just does it their own way, so really the signs are entirely irrelevant and this is just an issue with the people who work there- what I am saying is, these people are lazy fucking assholes and I hate them and hope they go to take a drink of water and spill it all over their shirts.
Also like the gall to be rude to you for attempting to follow their protocols and be as un-disruptive as possible?? Imo justified to bitch at them, idk its just unfair that THEIR short-sightedness and lack of problem solving has to stress out someone entirely unaffiliated with the building, it just seems really fucking unprofessional and unnecessary

Reminds me of the time my wife went to the ER and she didn't know what was wrong but she saw a sign saying that everyone could have one visitor present so I immediately ordered an uber and got my ass over.
Then when I told the women at the ER entrance what was going on and asked where she was they were like, "uh... So why would that mean you need to go in there? 🤨"
"... Because my autistic wife is in the ER and she's scared??"
"Uh... huh..." And then they continue to both look at me like an alien while they call someone, and I'm on the phone with my wife who's like, "Why do they have that sign if no one can visit??"
And then they inform me rather coldly that she's been discharged so I won't have to worry about getting to her room and she'll be down soon and we're both like "??? Nobody told her she was discharged yet so why do you sound so annoyed goddammit????"
I hope to god they don't get the same treatment when their loved ones have an emergency, we were both in tears by the time she got down to me.

I can actually apply some context for you because I work in a really old hospital!
Modern hospitals are meant to be discreet, secure departments (hence the switch from "emergency room" to "emergency department" [ED]).
Ideally, there's just be a reception area where you could go and say, "Hey, I'm a visitor for so-and-so, please let me back". Unfortunately, that's a security risk, so a lot of mandatory renovations exist around pre-existing constructions that don't allow for proper reception areas. Because of this, medical staff get these awkward, in-between door bells that are either painfully annoying, or too hard to hear if the nurses are, ya know, in patient rooms.
Because my hospital is so old, we do have a reception area. It causes a lot of problems, since our only line of defense is our receptionist, and genuine security concerns can very easily leave the ED.
Tl;Dr these bells are a terrible middle ground between security and funding.

As a regular patient and visitor, I've managed to get away with pressing it 3 times in short bursts without a finger wag every time. For now.

First one: That intercom won't work until you release it.
Second one is easy: "make up your mind"

Flight attendant last night gave the emergency exit row speech and then started pointing at people for the verbal "yes", but she didn't actually ASK us.
Proceeded to get snotty with a woman because she prompted her seatmate to say yes when she didn't know what the pointing was about. Walked a few rows ahead and then whipped around to call her a problem.
Second flight attendant walks by a few seconds later and goes "she means it!"

Personally, I'd play Jingle Bells with it to see if they prefer that instead

Please Ring Bell, Press and Hold, Press and Release.

This reminds me when Sarah Connor used the intercom to force the staff to release the door while holding the psychiatric doctor hostage lol

I'd rip off both signs so they can make better ones that give instructions they actually want
