Too mild for school I did a 5K that was 7.4 kilometers
Every year my college does a small low stakes 5K “fun run” which was actually not fun, and not because it went up and down a bunch of steep hills during a rain storm, but because nobody on the school faculty is capable of basic counting.
First of all despite being labeled a “5K” the official description said it was 2.5 miles. You might have noticed this is significantly less than 5 kilometers, which is 3.1 miles. Insert jokes about Americans not understanding kilometers here.
I showed up a half hour early and I spoke to all the staff and several non staff present, referring to it as a 5K. “Are you doing the 5k? Is there where I sign up for the 5K? When does the 5K start? (There was also inconsistent information about the start time and where to register) Etc. Nobody corrected me and told me it wasn’t actually 5K.
I knew something was wrong when my fitness device said I had travelled 3.5 miles and Google Maps said I still had a mile to go. Frankly my feet were hurting and I was late to something I wanted to do so and there was a nor’easter (storm) happening so I called a couple people to pick me up who didn’t respond. Thankfully the person in charge of the 5K checked up on me and drove me back to campus.
I told her I was kind of mad nobody said it was more than 5 kilometers and she said she warned everyone it was actually 4 miles (6.4 km) and they changed the route last night because the previous route was shorter than 5 kilometers. So apparently this school is capable of charting a course less than 5K or more than 5K but not exactly 5K.
After returning to campus I spoke to a professor who had participated in the race, and she said none of them were warned it was over 5 kilometers and she was kind of mad because it made her late to a lecture and she has arthritis so she can’t push herself too hard.
To make matters worse the race was not even 4 miles like they claimed, it was 4.6 miles or 7.4 kilometers. I double checked by charting the distance using Google Maps.
TLDR I signed up for a 5K which was advertised as actually being 4 kilometers but I was told it was changed last night to be 6.4 kilometers but the actual distance was 7.4 kilometers.
Edit: To all the “it was an extra 10 minutes of running“ people, first of all not everybody is in good enough shape to do a 10 minute mile, second it’s called “mildly infuriating“ not “it ruined my life infuriating.”

Not enough people seem to recognize that this is r/mildlyinfuriating. Thankfully this was a fun run, because a real 5k race that measured long would wreck people going all out. Racing a 5k is almost a sprint, an extra 2.4 km would prove impossible to continue going at those paces without significantly slowing down.

u/run_bike_run 21d ago
Every time I've set a personal best in a 5k, I've been at least a little bit uncertain that I'll make it to the finish line without collapsing.
If I ran a 5k the way I typically run a 5k, I would be genuinely unable to get to 7.4k. I'd probably struggle horribly to get to six.
101
u/Clean_Bat5547 21d ago
Exactly. You pace yourself so you are really pushing the last kilometre and aiming to hit that finish line fully spent. Not "collapse and need paramedics" spent but "I'm going to be gasping and if I'm doing any more it's a slow recovery jog" spent.
39
u/carson63000 20d ago
I’ve nearly flamed out because my watch GPS was a little off and I realised the finish line was 100m further away than I expected.
3
u/UncleJoesLandscaping 19d ago
I will tell you the secret to setting new personal bests at 5k, run a 5k that is not 5k.
I ran one where I clocked in at 17 minutes. I didn't have a GPS tracker, but there was no way I just beat my PB with 2 minutes and it seemed like the staff had estimated it with google maps.
92
u/mousefactors 21d ago
Yeah, it's like if you sign up to lift a 50lb weight and it's 74lb.
75
u/shotouw 20d ago
Or to be more precise: It's having people pick a weight that they think they can lift 15 times, then when they did it 15 times you inform them they have to do it 23 times.
17
u/mousefactors 20d ago
Yeah. I chose the example where it's clear how injured someone might get. Because it's really easy to try to finish a race because of the pressure and have a bad outcome.
58
u/Top-Ad4532 21d ago
You're god damn right. Any race 50 % longer than advertised would destroy people. It might actually be dangerous.
17
u/Additional_Meeting_2 20d ago
And op said there was rain and hills. Lots of people probably stopped in middle of some hill between 5 and 7.4 km.
16
u/Positive_Throwaway1 20d ago
100 percent correct. I had it happen to me on what was supposed to be a 100k bike race and budgeted my body for 62.14 miles. They made it 68. I ended up with Rhabdo and almost lost consciousness on the bike.
31
u/a2_d2 21d ago
It’s not quite a sprint but if I had planned to run 5k I’d be feeling pretty bad when running the 6/7/8th k. You run at a pace that will leave you tired but not destroyed, and running a distance different than the published one is not enjoyable (aka there is nothing fun about this fun run).
OP, sounds like the planning committee needs help!

The problem is the word infuriating is very far on the emotion scale so what even does being mildly infuriated look like. Like to me being normal infuriated is basically so mad you’re ready to fight so what mildly is like half ready to fight?
6
u/Klutzy_Finance5296 20d ago
I agree. Any level of “infuriated” is pretty intense. Mildly annoying would be a more reasonable fit for this situation.

Seeing people say oh its just an extra 10minutes... Yeah not everyone is capable of keeping the pace for the whole run.
Also not a professional event but a fun run. And none of that matters as people often plan on strict schedules when they think they got correct info.

Lmao since it’s only extra 10 mins, let’s see how many people won’t mind sitting in traffic for an extra 10 minutes, stay at work for an extra 10 minutes, wait for their take out an extra 10 minutes, stay in line for an extra 10 minutes, wait in their plane seat an extra 10 minutes before take off. I’m sure the 10 minutes becomes a burden then.

When I was in the Marines the NCOs used to take us on "practice PFTs". The PFT has a three mile run. They would always, every time, say we ran way too slow and would fail the real one, and show us our time. One of us recorded the route on his smart watch and we were going four miles
55
u/free_slurpee_day 20d ago
This is actually a nice prank though, because once you get to the real PFT you'd absolutely crush the three mile run

Someone once persuaded me to go see their play on the promise that it was only an hour and a half long and it turned out to be three and a half hours. When I confronted them about it they said well you wouldn't have gone if I'd told you the real time. I didn't have the heart to tell them I hated every second of that extra two hours. I picked the whole thing apart.
20
u/Civil-Big-754 20d ago
There's an incredibly underrated HBO show called the Life and Times of Tim (basically an animated Curb Your Enthusiam) that deals with this and the character played by Nick Kroll goes off on the guy who invited him to the play because he just wanted weed (the actor in the play played by Will Forte was also his pot dealer).
13
u/NotMuchTooSayStill 20d ago
I had someone invite me to their hometown and said it was only a 45 minute bus ride there. 2.5 hours later we get there and I told her to just tell me the truth next time. It was a great time there as they were having a big celebration but still, tell me the truth.

u/tesseracts 21d ago
They had maps of the route available before the run but I didn’t double check the distance or anything. The map just told you where to go it didn’t say how long the run was.
392
u/pohart 21d ago
I've never checked a route either. I just assume the organizer has done it.
Not every spot has a convenient 5k loop, but that's why sometimes the end is a little farther from the start or there's a weird little turn around
88
u/captjellystar 21d ago
I’ve done a few runs that the organizers just have a U turn at a random street to make it the right distance. Having the wrong distance is a choice basically anytime you have the appropriate space to do a race.
69
u/tesseracts 21d ago
This is kind of a weird location to be fair and I think it would’ve been easiest for them to just do a loop around the college campus multiple times. I think it would be better for the course to be too short rather than 50% too long, however.

u/MedicalMixtape 21d ago

To the idiots saying stuff like "it's just 10 more minutes of running" - even for someone fast like me this is very much mildly infuriating. If I ran hard for 5k (around 19mins) and then had to slog thru another 50% of the distance, I'd be ready to throttle someone.
Abyone claiming is no big deal is just showing themselves up that they've never entered a race
10
u/ZekkPacus 20d ago
Yeah I know what sort of pace I can sustain over 5km. I absolutely could not sustain that same pace for another 2.4km.

I have encountered many folks who either don’t understand “race” distances in general or (if American) don’t get anything miles versus kilometers related. After running my first marathon (26.2 miles), my mom was bragging to a friend about it. The friend responded, seemingly unimpressed, that she was surprised I hadn’t run a 5k before. My mom was very quick to correct her that a marathon was not in fact a 5k.
32
u/dessertcactus0 20d ago
What did your mom’s friend think a 5k was? 5000 miles? I guess in that case yeah that would be way more impressive than a measly 26.2 lol
26
u/stirwise 20d ago
Friend probably thought a “marathon” was a road running race of any distance. It’s a very common misunderstanding.

Every time I see a marathon quoted as (26.2 miles or 26 miles and 385 yards) I have a chuckle.
Because, where as the 1896 marathon was 24.8 miles (under 40Km by 88.25m), the 1900 Paris marathon was 25 miles (rounding up), the 1904 St. Louis marathon was 24.85 miles (off by only 7.8m), and then the 1920 Antwerp marathon stretched to 26.56 miles (42.75 km ANTWERP!).
The accepted distance today was set at the 1908 London Olympics, only so that by Royal request it could start at Windsor Castle & finish in front of the royal box at White City. This specific adjustment added 2.2 miles to the original ~24-mile plan, resulting in a total distance of 26 miles and 385 yards (42,195 meters).
An unsatisfactory number in any measurement unit, except perhaps that it is One Marathon
33
u/BootToTheHeadNahNah 20d ago edited 20d ago
My wife once ran the Portland marathon and the course marshals (who had not been given clear instructions) sent about a third of the field in the wrong direction adding a full 1km to the route. Sucked for her as she was hoping to Boston Qualify, but the race director basically shrugged and said people like her should just have run faster to make up the difference. Anyways, the race director ended up being arrested on unrelated fraud charges so karma had it's day.

u/tesseracts 20d ago
It’s funny how common this problem is for serious races, I had no idea it was a big problem before I made this post.
25
u/ironicmirror 20d ago
About 10 years ago I did 5k, I was sort of out of shape, but not really out of shape. So there's a group of people who were in shape and they were off and running, and I was sort of like in front of the group that was not in shape and going a little slower, and I guess the markings on the trail was not 100% clear... At least to me... So I went went around 200 meters off of the path we were supposed to be on, and then I realize there are no more signs and I saw behind me and there was like 40 people following me, so I told them hey I think we're in the wrong direction we can go back.
Not a lot of those people were happy with me.
49
u/Positive_Throwaway1 20d ago edited 17d ago
Similar thing happened to me last year. I did the American Diabetes Association bike ride near Chicago last year, and signed up for the 100k and raised a bunch of money for them. Should've been 62.14 miles. They inexplicably made the course 68 miles. Adding 10 percent to a race that long, where people are budgeting energy (and I'm type 1--you gotta calculate shit). Add to that a 20 mph headwind and record high temps that day, and I got fucking mild/moderate Rhabdo without even knowing it--until I ended up in the ER a couple days later when I wasn't recovering properly.
I get that they can't control the weather or the wind of course, but nobody seemed to think it was a big deal that the race had an extra 10 percent added to the end that wrecked everyone. I asked the organizers when they solicited feedback and they didn't seem to be aware of any issue with it at all.
3
u/tesseracts 20d ago
That is super fucking infuriating. At least my thing was a small low stakes race, yours was a serious race that would take you like 4-5 hours at least and you raised a bunch of money for. I'm sorry you went to the hospital, I would have fucking sued them or something. You didn't say if you have diabetes but if you do that makes their carelessness extra bad.
To the credit of the people in charge of my race they listened to me and took me seriously.

I ran cross country and track throughout high school and college. I was OK, got some money for school, but was not competitive. I have run many of these types of events. This is very rare and it would annoy me. Not because I had to run a little longer like some of the comments say, but because I would run my 5K pace and completely blow up with a mile+ left. It isn't about fitness. It is about participating in the event you signed up for.
49
u/tesseracts 20d ago
That’s a good point, but also, a lot of participants of 5Ks are not fit and it’s kind of bullshit to shame them for it. It’s a common starter exercise for out of shape people.
16
u/Slash_Root 20d ago

The last time I did a 5k, I had my inhaler with me and used it a bunch, but felt my throat constricting extra just before I finished. I pushed through because I saw the finish line so close, but my throat was so closed I genuinely could not gasp any air in as I crossed the finish line. My vision started turning green at the edges and my heart rate was 199 bpm.
If I had another 2ish miles to go, I think I genuinely would have died.

Something similar happened a little while ago in Edmonton for their marathon. They miscalculated and the total distance was 650m over. It doesn’t sound like a whole lot, but it affected people’s times. Times that are used to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

I did a sprint distance triathlon once which started with a 500m swim in a river. They put the buoy you were meant to go around (ie 250m each way) 500m from the start line...
1000m feels a looooot longer than 500m that's for sure.
13
u/Skinnwork 20d ago
Related to this, when I was in the army we had to do an annual Battle Fitness Test, which includes a 13km weighted march. The officer in charge was too stupid to figure out any way to reliably calculate the route. I think he used his truck and odometer, but he must have been running larger tires, because it was longer by about 2 km.
Keep in mind, this was an annual requirement, and failing meant being "counselled" by a supervisor, mandatory physical training, and a redo in the future.
14
u/LopsidedBottle 20d ago
To make matters worse the race was not even 4 miles like they claimed, it was 4.6 miles or 7.4 kilometers.
7.4 kilometres is almost exactly 4 nautical miles, by the way.

You’re right to be upset, doesn’t matter if it’s a casual fun run, a turkey trot, a half or full marathon. The basic expectation for all these is that the course distance be correct.
In 2024 the second half of the San Francisco marathon was 12.6 miles instead of 13.1, and it was such a big mistake it made the local news. Anyone signing up for any running event would be upset if the distance they signed up for is not what they ended up running.

My last unit in the army was doing peoples' 2 mile run on a course that was 2.25 miles.
A lot of people were failing. People knew, but weren't really raising a stink. I made a deal of it cause I was a weak runner and kept failing. They let me run annother unit's measured out run area and I passed by a minute or something.
They ended up changing the course and it saved a few people, including myself, from getting kicked out of the army.

As a runner, the effort you make when running 5km and 8km is TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
It is like if I had asked you "We can have a bathroom stop right now or in 20 minutes." and you think to yourself "I can hold off 20 minutes. I am not really that eager to pee." Only to find out 30 minutes later you still have to hold it for another 15 minutes.
It is uncomfortable, painful and really annoying tbh

u/punkwalrus 20d ago
So, when I became a president of a volunteer-run non-profit, I studied how other non-profits were run, and a huge amount of testimony were from runs like this. "5K Run for Cancer Awareness" and such. Apparently, a majority of them are not measured, except in some cases where runners are "career runners" and metrics are important. For example, like on the level of the NYC Marathon where professional course measurers use a calibrated bicycle fitted with a precision counting device. Most small charities on use GPS or street maps. Rarely is "that's not really 5k" brought up because that's not the point. Most of them are performative, because it's for awareness, not actual arithmetic. Some of them are actually far less than what they claim due to permits or just logistics getting in the way. "Well, it would be 5K, but the people in that neighborhood got the HOA to deny access, so we looped in front of the supermarket, which shortens the course by 800 ft, but... meh. Good enough."
In addition, most are run by volunteers, and sometimes they don't have relevant experience actually running and even like this. So the "ad hoc, poor communication," is not unusual.

So take the final course, and subtract the first course they had from it. 7.4k - 2.5k = 4.9k

Start from where the first course claimed to have ended, and go to the end of this course and voila!

The last race I ever ran was a marathon relay race. My part was the shortest, just over 3 miles. I’m slow but I volunteered. The first part was supposed to be on soft, sandy soil, so I chose shoes that suited that. I showed up and they tell us that there’s been a change and we’re now running on asphalt. My lower body did not appreciate the change in terrain on those shoes.
An extra mile would definitely make a difference so I get why you’re ticked.

Oddly, according to AI, that’s only about 8-9 one-pound boxes of spaghetti. I could sanity check it by counting the strands in a box, but that seems like a little much for Reddit comment.
Edit: I think I have to do it, because the Internet is telling me there’s 500 +/- strand of spaghetti and a standard 1 pound box, and that just seems absurdly high to me.

Ok, my daughter and I just counted a 1 pound bag of Trader Joe’s spaghetti. 556 noodles.
They measure in at 26 cm each, which means that it’s just shy of seven bags per kilometer.
One box of spaghetti, laid end to end is 144m - longer than a football field!

Wow! That is very cool!

If only there was some kind of device we have at our fingertips that has the ability to convert any distance to another unit. Oh well, back to doom scrolling.

You must be from the future. There is no way we can carry that type of device, let alone in our pocket.

The thing about recipes is Americans use volume (cups or fl.oz. or pint, quart, teaspoons, tablespoons) and the rest of the planet uses weight. Just get a scale and set it to grams and you can use all those foreign recipes and its so much easier, you dont need all these spoons and cups and half/quarter/eighth cups. Every single thing just measure out on the scale.

As someone said somewhere on my feed, "Why do recipes always ask for a cup of onions? Onions don't come in cups. They come in onions."

This is not true. It depends. Sometimes it's weight (10g of butter), sometimes it's volume (a cup of flour / 250 ml of milk), and sometimes it's quantity (2 eggs). Sometimes the entire recipe doesn't use weight, sometimes the recipe uses both volume/quantity and weight (cup of flour - x g of flour).

Usually if it's not weight, then it's an approximate measure. If the recipie says "2 tbs butter" then anything from 1.5-3 is probably fine.

Level or heeped? Melted or solid butter? This is the part I always get stuck on.

but converting from US recipes to metric is a pain in the ass. How much does a cup of granulated sugar weigh? And how much dose a cup of powdered sugar weigh?

Clicks and kilometers are the same.
Recipes are harder but there are conversion sites and apps out there. Pick one and stay consistent it helps.
One km is about .6 miles.

Just use the fibonacci method. Or remember that 5 mile = 8 km. You can calculate most distances easily with that.

All of it throws me off, especially in recipes.
It is really tough when I try to use 2 kilometers of cinnamon in my baking recipes. No one loves it like I do.

1 km is 0.6 miles, give or take. It's not precise but close enough for most daily use. So 5 km is ~3 miles. Going the other way you can use 1.6, so ex 5 miles is 8 km.
For quick mental math just knowing 10 km is 6 miles and 10 miles is 16 km makes a lot of rough estimates pretty simple to do.

60 mph is a very common speed limit, which is close enough to 100 kph for mental math. That's how I remember the conversion.

There was an Australian chef, whose recipe I was following for some pork belly.
He just said 180 for a couple hours and it'll be done.
Four hours and I cut into it and it looked nothing like his. I didn't think to convert, as every other YouTuber chef I watch speaks in freedom units. It's supposed to be 350° F (356 but my oven is too picky for that).

I ran a 5k at CU and was on pace for easily my best ever. I crossed the finish line, stopped my watch and walked around to recover. When I looked at the run, it registered 4.9k. I’m still salty years later.

We had the opposite problem at our first annual fire department 5k fundraiser this summer.
The organizer made it closer to 2 miles than 3.1 for some reason...
None of us there for the fundraiser really cared, it was like 90% FD people and their friends/family.
But there were a handful of serious runners who do 5ks like every week and they were PISSED.
Oops. 🤷♀️🤦♀️

Ran a "5K" once at a local university and it was totally unorganized. unmarked. I have a GPS watch so I ran extra so I could get my 3.1 in. avoid poorly organized races. lesson leaned. I probably won but there were no medals. lol

There is an organization that is responsible for measuring, setting up, timing and recording races. Your college chose not to use this organization and did it themselves and this is what you get.
For future, only sign up for run that are chip timed and put on by an actual organization.
Signed, Someone who has run a bunch of 5k's and cannot run further than that in one sitting.

They can just tag it as a trail race and all of this has been solved. They are always a minimum of what’s advertised; did a 14 mile half marathon on this, and 10ks which end up being 12k.

u/citynights 20d ago
The level of organisation here is so bad I can't help imagine it's how someone gets their kicks.
They probably steal ketchups from diners too. and put salt in sugar dispensers.

As someone who never does stuff like this, I would be foaming-at-the-mouth pissed if they lengthened the course without telling anyone.

This happened in Wichita, KS. The organizers thought a 5k was actually 5 miles.
