I'm slightly vexed Being told my tea steeper is unprofessional

I 3d printed this tea steeper for my desk at work. I thought it was really cute and it makes me happy when I use it. Apparently because I printed it in all white, someone made a comment in front of my bosses boss, that it looks like the little guy is sitting on a toilet. Now I got an email from HR stating that I have "objects inappropriate for the work environment" on my desk, and that it must be removed before the end of the day. Like it's just a dude holding a fishing pole.

So frustrating.

UPDATE: after this post has quickly blown up, and made me laugh a few times. I talked to my immediate boss who agreed with a few of you that HR probably doesn't even know what item I'm supposed to remove. So I have emailed HR back, and cc'd my boss, for them to come identify the "inappropriate object" as neither myself or my boss are able to identify what might be the problem. So we shall see what happens.

UPDATE 2: Electric Boogaloo: Just got off the phone with someone in HR. They are going to come over around 2pm (about an hour and 15 minutes from now) and look at the item. All they told me was that they received an email from an AVP (my bosses boss) that it was said to him that I had a 3d printed item on my desk that was about potty humor and that my "whole team" (it's just the one coworker who has a problem, none of the other 7 do) finds it offensive. The person in HR said they will look at it and determine if there is any reason for the complaint.

UPDATE 3 - Update with a vengeance: HR just left my office. Saw no problems, thinks the whole complaint is dumb and is going to write it up that way. Also asked if I could print them one too. So I will be doing that this evening. She (the HR person) asked me if I wanted to make a report of possible harassment by the coworker. I stated that I will write up something to put into a file with HR if needed for a future report, but not to open a case now on this issue.

someone made a comment in front of my bosses boss

That person should be at the top of the list for the next workforce reduction. Anyone who would deign to make this an issue is a toxic asshole who sucks at their job and manufactures drama like this to distract from their incompetence. People like that need to be identified and removed as quickly as possible. Their ongoing presence is symptomatic of something wrong with the organizational culture.

6

u/Silver-Training-9942 18d ago

Yup thats a toxic workplace virus transmitter right there.

Like who the fuck would look at that mug and go 'urgh disgusting, how could they possibly be good at their job, with the individualism of a slightly amusing mug".

6

u/Callidonaut 18d ago

The worst thing is how readily those toxic, incompetent, pathologically combative assholes seem to get promoted to positions of authority over everyone else, instead of fucking fired.

3

u/Constant-Plant-9378 18d ago

Its the rule more than the exception. Most organizations kind of suck. It is rare to work in a company that is led by people who are both intelligent and kind, but also have the backbone to not tolerate bullshit. They are rare but do exist. I work at one.

4

u/smokeweedNgarden 18d ago

I once was chewed out by the CEO of a small startup because he saw me having a cup of ice cream on a bench outside the ice cream shop a few blocks from the office on my lunch break. He fully freaked out on me when I got back from lunch like 15 minutes later saying it was unprofessional and I looked ridiculous.

I was an adult woman, in a work appropriate dress with no branding, quietly eating ice cream on a bench on a warm summer day, on my own time. I left not long after and his business failed.

I got a t-shirt from a burrito place. It was in the style of WW2 airplane nose art with a girl in flight gear riding a burrito as if it were a bomb. I was in the office and the sole HR lady pulled me aside and asked "do you really think that shirt is appropriate?"

We work in construction, lady. It's a burrito. Relax. God she was a miserable tight-ass.

294

u/SatiesUmbrellaCloset oh no 18d ago

i've long thought that most people in power got into those positions of power because they had this mentality. they cannot notice a situation without inserting themselves into it and changing it, regardless of whether they're improving it (and most of the time they're making it worse)

101

u/mythrilcrafter 18d ago

Dealt with that with a site manager that our company fired a few months after hiring.

Guy was obsessed with inserting himself into problems and portraying himself as being the solution to what he always perceived as everyone else's stupidity (although he was a very DARVO/"Respectability Politics" type so he would never actually use that wording).

He always talked down to our technicians, assembly crews, and our not technical role (shipping, acquisitions, and general admin) staff; constantly lectured to me and the other engineers, and our technical seniors that "every problem was just us not trying very hard because the solution was easy because ChatGPT said so!", while also constantly pulling our attention away from our tasks to do random tasks that only served to make him look good despite his claims that "it'll be good for your career!" (but if any of the directors asked questions, suddenly it would shift to "you need to get a better perspective on what your priorities are")

On top of all that, he treated all the women in our company as glorified secretaries; regardless of their position int he company, be they our engineers, managers, or even the women at the "executives of the company who owns our company" level.

Guy couldn't have been fired fast enough.

These are mostly middle managers who are resentful they don't have real power, so they cause unnecessary problems for their colleagues. The ones who succeed in life and attain real power are busy destroying countries.

16

u/randalpinkfloyd 18d ago

Totally, they just can't see a reality where their input isn't important to any given situation. It sucks but it also gives me great pleasure to tell people like this to fuck off when I can do so with no repercussions.

14

u/Dear_Palpitation4838 18d ago

Yup. Like when you notice that a building's lobby is remodeled every 5 years but the toilets don't work. Middle managers are always looking for a way to prove that they're actually doing something.

11

I recently started a new hospitality supervisor job. I asked for 40-45 hours and my manager asked if I'd be happy to do 4 10hr shifts. Absolutely! It's my favourite way to work.

The other supervisor got all pissy because "supervisor are expected to work 5 days a week". Said supervisor only works opens and refused to close...So HR emailed the manager and said all supervisors must be scheduled for 5 shifts a week.

So I asked if I could just do 48-50 hours rather than waste my time with 2 5 hour shifts. So that's is what I've been doing.

Backfired on the other supervisor because I'm getting so much praise from upper management and owner for my dedication. And everyone is suddenly seeing the other supervisor as the lazy entitled person she is.

Some people really do think it's their god-given mission on earth to insert themselves in situations that have nothing to do with them. Like, come on. It's obvious the figure is fishing here. Even if he was sitting on a toilet, who cares? There are way more important things to worry about. The person who reported it is probably one of those coworkers that is constantly watching what everyone else is doing while ignoring their own work.

This post reminds me of something that happened to me last week. I work at a church which also runs a half day preschool. Note I do not technically work FOR the preschool, I work for the church, but I do help at the preschool a lot. Like helping check out kids at dismissal, I do it every day with the director. I’ve worked here for almost 9 years. The parents know who I am. My kids went here, etc etc.

I was asked to remove a sticker from the back of my car because a parent had complained about it. The sticker was of a chunky cartoon frog holding a tiny knife with the phrase “I have had just about enough” underneath it. The reason the parent gave was that it seemed a bit inappropriate with all the Lindsay Clancy case stuff happening. Fair enough I suppose, but I’ve had this sticker on my car for almost a year. And for some reason, this parent isn’t bothered by my “I love my cult” sticker. Idk man. Just irked me that I had to remove something from my own car that in my opinion was silly and not offensive.

I wouldn't be able to mind my own business with this thing around.

Some people have filthy minds.

Kind of ironic considering a lot of this sub has to do with complaining about how other people live their lives as it doesn't even affect anyone else's life

Per the update: The only reason a VP would be getting involved with this sort of dumb shit is if they are fucking whoever the complainer is. And people who complain about this sort of thing are 100% the types that fuck VPs for validation.
