I just wanted a hot dog Landlord replaced washer with tiny washer- fits 2 towels!

Post image

Backstory- my washer broke and it took 2 weeks to get my landlord to replace it- just hours before I left for a trip. I’ve got a family of 4, one in sports, so the laundry has piled up. We could have taken laundry to get it washed somewhere but the landlord kept stringing me along making me think I was about to get a call that the delivery was on the way and to keep my phone near.

This is what the replacement looks like. Original was significantly bigger than this. I’m thinking this one is for a tiny home or RV?! Not a house.

In Germany they take kitchen fixtures like cabinets in most cases too.

This is crazy to me. Are German apartments more uniform? If I took cabinets out of an apartment in the US, I wouldn't be able to put them up in another one. They wouldn't be sized correctly.

Same in Germany. No, it doesn’t make any sense. Yes, they still do it this way.

Depends. If you move often you gotta look for appartments with a provided kitchen or you get one that doesnt need to be fitted.

How tf do you install new cabinets in a rental? I'm renting it. It's not mine. The landlord should be responsible for providing basic things like a kitchen cabinet

Apparently people move their hardwood floors too in some cases. It’s fascinating and renting sucks enough without having to maintain and move all of that.

If the owner is an asshole yes. Most of the time its "Leave it the way you got it". So if you installed flooring (for some reason) you might have to remove it.

A friend from Germany had an apartment in Mannheim with plywood - it was expected you’d drop your own flooring or carpet over it.

There is plywood under most floors. But yeah cheapskates are everywhere

These people aren't even talking about cheapskates, this is apparently a common thing in places like the Netherlands.

Have never lived there, in the appartments i lived in there has always been floor. Newly built appartments might be different.

Shit next time I have a bad landlord I'm taking the carpet when I leave 😂

You install them and then uninstall when you leave and take them to your new place. It was very weird to me as an American but that’s just how they do it.

I barely even bring a couch with me when I move. I couldn't imagine packing up the cabinets 😂

This is usually due to the length of the lease and the difficulty of terminating it. Knowing the conditions in the US, I wouldn't be surprised if a tenant could be evicted very quickly, so he wouldn't have time to prepare or pack up his furniture

and a couple of times I even came across options like "apartment without renovation, only bare concrete walls, you can do renovation instead of rent"

Sometimes in the US it's difficult to evict, but usually it's 30 days for minor reasons and 48 hours for more major reasons unless police remove you for a crime immediately and you get out of jail greeted to a locked/evicted apartment because those 48 hours happened in jail.

Almost all apartment kitchens in the USA have built-in cabinetry. Most have a refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher installed. A washing machine and clothes dryer are sometimes included. Some apartments have a community laundry room with machines you pay to use.

What?? How?

As an American cabinet maker, this is just impossible here. Almost all cabinets are built to their specific spaces, and almost all those spaces are too variated. They are permanent fixtures of rooms.

We do have that a lot here as well. Normally you sell it to the next tennant.

Maybe the difference is that leases here are normally indefinetly and a landlord cant really kick renters out as long as they pay and act relatively normal.
