I just wanted a hot dog Landlord replaced washer with tiny washer- fits 2 towels!
Backstory- my washer broke and it took 2 weeks to get my landlord to replace it- just hours before I left for a trip. I’ve got a family of 4, one in sports, so the laundry has piled up. We could have taken laundry to get it washed somewhere but the landlord kept stringing me along making me think I was about to get a call that the delivery was on the way and to keep my phone near.
This is what the replacement looks like. Original was significantly bigger than this. I’m thinking this one is for a tiny home or RV?! Not a house.

It legitimately just looks like they went on home depot's website, filtered by least expensive, and bought the top result no questions asked. That's abysmal.

u/Apprehensive_Log8046 12d ago
I’d think that but the guys that delivered it needed to borrow my tools and supplies to install it and I would expect more from Home Depot 🤣 I asked where it came from because my dad is offering to return it and pay the difference for a normal size. Landlord won’t tell me where it came from.

Landlord passing up a free appliance upgrade means he thinks a smaller machine means you'll use less water. Because you certainly won't need to do 10x as many loads now
88
u/TiredAndTiredOfIt 12d ago
OP do you rent water included? If so? One garmet at a time. For a month, if he kicks a fuss? Tell him the only thing that changed is the washer and he CHOSE an inefficient model

u/notpaulrudd 11d ago
City water is usually billed per 1000 gallons, that washing machine uses maybe 20 gallons per load. Drop in the bucket.
Also if you're looking to waste water, just leave the sink on overnight. Still wouldn't recommend.

u/bbhrae 12d ago
Yeah I had Home Depot come install my washer and dryer and they just didn’t do the dryer. They said “all you need to do is connect the hose” and it’s like then whyyyyy don’t you do it! Because they brought the wrong size hose.

They refused to hook up my driver because they "didn't know if the vent was up to code". Ok thanks then.

u/lostarchitect 12d ago
I got an almost free dishwasher because of this kind of thing.
They brought the new dishwasher and unpacked it on the porch, THEN looked at my existing hookup and said it wasn't to code (correct, but this is an old house) and they wouldn't do it. I said, OK, I'll do it and get a refund, just take the old one with you like you're supposed to. They said "No."
So they left me with a half disconnected old dishwasher and a new one unboxed on the porch. I removed the old one and installed the new one myself. My wife called to get the install refund, and gave them a hard time, so they agreed not only to the refund, but to a gift certificate too.
In 2 weeks, we hadn't gotten the certificate, so she called them again and chewed them out. 15 minutes later, the gift certificate arrived via email. Then 15 minutes after that, ANOTHER gift certificate arrived. They both worked.
So anyway, that's how I got a $600 dishwasher for $150.

u/BreadKnifeSeppuku 12d ago
It's probably 10+ years old and refurbished.
Probably sat in some lot or something. I doubt he bought a brand new washer. Larger places will just rotate shit out because it's more expensive to replace parts
You shouldn't have provided tools lol. You can always replace the washer if your LL doesn't do anything. You WILL need to put their washer back etc but, seems like a waste and I'll place a gentleman's bet on the LL claiming your washer was theirs so keep receipts lol
35
u/Frost_moss 12d ago
I've seen these before. They are intended to be put into hotel suites and airbnbs. Does your landlord have a bunch of units? If so I can almost guarantee that he went to a hotel supplier to buy in bulk and get a discount rate. Either he always intended to put this crap in, or he thought they were bigger and is now stuck with them.
16
14
u/NanoRaptoro 12d ago
Couple things:
1) in the future if a repair person asks to borrow your tools, the answer is, "I'm sorry, I don't have any." If they are not competent enough to bring needed tools to a job site (or too insolvent to purchase tools), they are not competent or solvent enough to have insurance.
2) This is the best advice I've seen. In most places in the US, landlords aren't required to supply washers and dryers (depending on local laws and what is written in your lease). That said, generally if they do choose to provide them, they are required to fix them or replace them with comparable units if they cannot be repaired. You signed a contract to rent the apartment under the understanding that it had full size appliances.

The type of landlord to do this has a whole deck of underhanded tactics up their sleeve. I’d probably be petty enough to poke that bear but there’s not a real way for a tenant to win in this situation, just find a new table to play at once your lease expires
47
u/rcowie 12d ago
The tiny appliances can be more expensive tan the full size. A buddy bought a condo that has a half size oven and range. Without ripping out the counter thats all that will fit. They cost more than my full size I bought for my place.
17
u/Pep2385 12d ago
Yeah, you see them a lot in rental beach houses where there isn't always a lot of space for appliances since those properties are expensive per square foot. I have had to fix or replace a few and they are always weirdly expensive for much lower capacity.

u/MiyagiJunior 12d ago
I had a landlord that promised us air conditioning to be installed (as agreed per our lease) and then when we moved, we found he bought the cheapest, weakest AC units he could find. Not only this was very cheap on his end and really didn't get us to like him, but also, it would've deterred future tenants from coming (as we only stayed for a year). Some landlords are just shortsighted a-holes.

Guess I got lucky with ours. Then again the LL I had at the time was a sweet older lady and when they bought a new dishwasher over (I think it was Lowes) they sat it in side the unit as the installers were lazy AF and the store did charge an installation fee.
The LL was upset and the store wouldn't help, so my uncle (who works in construction and maintenance) came over and installed it and worked fine. My aunt called the store and chewed the manager's rear. They refunded the install fee and gave a gift card worth $200, which I gave to the LL.
Month later the next unit's fridge took a dump and my uncle took care of it. The LL hired him to do work. Can't trust the installers used by stores nowadays.

Just tell landlord "there was a mistake and mini-RV sized washing machine was delivered. Can you tell your source to take it back and send the correct size for an apartment." Give the landlord a chance to either be unreasonable or be a good person. Putting them on the spot like this, without assigning blame, might help the situation ... unless LL is truly an asshole .... but then you'll know where you stand for sure.
512
u/Dorajuarez21 12d ago edited 12d ago
Perfect answer. Ask to verify and mention the size is so small that you cant even fit or have room for a towel and mention that they must have sent him the wrong item send him the picture and say I hope you didn't get riped off when you paid or something better worded and ask when he can verify and replace it as it is unusable and unreasonable for a family of your size otherwise since you cant use it a rent reduction since you will no longer be able to wash there and will be consuming less water.
71
u/procrastinatorsuprem 11d ago
You cant wash a queen sized sheet in that, never mind a set of sheets. Even a heavy pair of pants would tilt it.
86
u/Ok_Problem426 11d ago
Adding to this—it’s very possible that a contractor or property manager was being a dumbass bringing a washing machine which they knew would fit and your landlord also got scammed and has no idea. If it was intentional, it at least gives them a chance to save face

Depending on where OP lives, renters don’t have options for something better a lot of the time and landlords know that. My townhouse came with hookups only and I had to find my own used washer/dryer. My landlord wouldn’t let anyone else install them either because the spacing isn’t up to code. This is pretty standard in my town too.

Agreed, I pay over $3k in rent a month, have so for the last 5 years where I’m currently at. Don’t frequently submit maintenance requests, but I did one last month bc the faucet was spraying and the button kept getting stuck. They came out and replaced my nice chrome Pfister faucet head with a stainless steel one that they seemed to have bought from 5below. OP, depending on where you are, the landlord may be obligated by law to replace apartment fixtures with comparable equipment. As this is so much smaller, you could argue that this is a downgrade. In many places, the landlord could be forced to lower your rent going forward, provide backpay or replace the machine with a proper one. Look into your local tenancy laws
48
u/Silent_Advance7506 12d ago
Very good point! Check into that. Does your lease even say there's a washer in unit though? If not, then they may not be obligated to replace it. Either way, landlord sounds pretty dense/ cheap. That said, I (single person) had one of those for YEARS! I bought one because my apt didn't have one. They're solid little beasts and cleaned well, but i wouldn't suggest one for a family. Two people tops, and even then you're doing one towel and some shirts/load, not multiple towels, sheets, jeans....

u/fcocyclone 12d ago
Yeah, oftentimes landlords aren't required to provide all appliances, but if they do provide them they are required to maintain them or replace with similar quality. Which makes sense, quality of the appliances is something renters consider when touring a unit, it would be a bait and switch if the landlord could just swap those out for something inferior.

But then you saw in the trash a receipt from Home Depot for a toilet the exact same size as yours, but with a joke hole that's just for farts! They found the cheapest washer money could buy it seems.
You should invite the landlord over and ask to see if that was the correct washing machine or they accidently bought the wrong size.
Be polite and see what happens.
If they say that was the intended size it might be a good idea to think of moving out in the future. They are likely to make more corner cutting repairs.

I’m not sure if this is what you intended to get as a replacement because the size difference is so significant and we can only fit 2 towels in it.” And she said it was the best she could do. After that I was mad and I would love to use that line some day when it’s time to pay rent….

This is a red flag that you have a slumlord.
It also tells you every future repair will be approached in the same manner. The cheapest legal fix, and done on their time. If this is the bullshit you can see, imagine the bullshit you can't see.
I would start keeping my eyes open for other places to live when your lease is up if it was me.
I've been lucky that when my water heater broke, my landlord replaced it within 3 days. Same with my dishwasher. After always having a slumlord, it really is life changing to have a landlord that acts quickly.
Admittedly, my landlord goes the cheap route as well, but not to this degree. Like my water heater is one of the least efficient on the market, but it's 3x more efficient than the 20yo one they replaced at least.
14
u/SubieGal9 12d ago
Thank you for supplying a temporary washer. When will the permanent replacement arrive?
12
u/le_putwain 12d ago
So the law may be different where I am but if you rent an apartment with certain amenities attached and those amenities are removed or degraded (like this) you have a case for a rent reduction. Look up tenants’ rights regarding amenities because a landlord can’t just do that without some kind of recompense for you.
Also this is true in America in many states so I imagine in Europe if you’re there it’s even moreso the case.

The irony here is that they could have bought a used, full size machine for the same price as this apartment sized washer.

As an Aussie, I find it weird that the washing machine is the land lords responsibility. Is it the same with the fridge?

In the US, apartments typically come with refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishwasher. It was about 50/50 on if the apartment had washer/dryer connections, and of those that had connections some places come with washer/dryer. One apartment I rented they offered the appliances for rent during my lease term. It was $40/month extra.
It is less common to find a fully-outfitted kitchen among rental houses. They almost always come with a stove and dishwasher, and many come with a fridge. But some do not. My current lease says if the landlord-supplied refrigerator breaks I am responsible for repairing or replacing. The replacement would belong to me after the lease term though.

Ive never rented a place without a fridge. Washer machines and dryers are not always included. But are becoming more common. Probably the larger the house the less likely to have one.

Canadian here. Most half-decent apartments here have laundry in the unit too, but I've never heard of somewhere that the landlord didn't supply a fridge. Do you guys have to get your own stove/range too?

In the UK we supply literally everything ourselves unless agreed otherwise which is a lot less common. We supplied fridge, freezer, washing machine, dryer, gas cooker and so on.

Do Australians lug around washing machines and dryers when they move?

Typically yeah, unless you are renting a house in the boonies for super cheap.
Landlords typically don’t want their tenants fiddling around with plumbing as it’s a massive liability

In California, fridge yes. Washer and dryer, no. Every state is different though.

It depends if the rental includes appliances or not. If it does (most rentals do), landlord covers it.

Depends on the agreement but typically yes, all basic home appliances are covered. Sometimes if you rent a house not so much but apartments are almost always a yes.

Mine did this too. I think he thought only the smaller model would fit. I talked to him, told him the larger model would fit and was more comparable to my previous machine (and similarly priced). He had them swap it.
Granted, my landlord is a really decent dude. But it’s always worth talking to them.

Your landlord will be asking you why you used more water come the utilities, unaware it's his fault

Do you have to pay for the water bill? You can start running your sink all the time and hike the bill on your landlord, then mention that your washing machine has to run 24/7 because its so small.

The problem is you have it set to M for Mini, when it should be set to W for Wumbo!

Tell them you'll be running 4+ loads a day, not only wearing it down fast but using a ton more water and electricity. Anyone with half a brain would realize this isnt a good option for family.

u/No-Channel3917 12d ago
Why would the landlord care about water/electricity? Most renters pay for those.

u/AngelLK16 12d ago
Check to make sure they knew how small it is. They might have thought it was a full-size washer.

u/apathy-sofa 12d ago
Careful that you don't inject water onto the control board the next time you have it unplugged, because the next time you power it up, the board will short. Those thing are expensive.

Lol I didn't even know they made washers this small, holy shit. That sucks, sorry OP.

Okay, this sucks but it looks like the stacker I had in an apartment in my 20s that was the best washer ever. Everything got so clean, and dried so quickly I loved it. But I also did not have kids! Sorry bout that OP, landlords are notoriously shitheads. Have you talked to them though? I would seriously send the pic to them

Might as well wash the two towels by hand. What’s even the point of this? The point of washers and all appliances is EFFICIENCY, and this is highly inefficient.

Haha, probably took so long to get this in place because the local appliance stores don’t have it in stock and it was a special order.

They're sending you a hint to use a laundromat. Not a subtle hint either. Respond accordingly. Doing smaller loads more often may cost him money on utilities but detergent, etc, isn't cheap on your end. A reasonable conversation may be in order before escalating.

I'm renting an apartment in Utah and my stove went out. They replaced it, but the stove they replaced it with has four small burners on it instead of two big ones and two small ones. I can't even boil a pot of spaghetti.
$2300 rent. I'm ready to die. I don't even care about retiring anymore.

It kind of reminds me of the bathing suit wringer things they put in some public pools. Definitely tiny!
