What's worst is when "no tip" requires choosing "custom" and typing the 0 in yourself

391

u/kyl792 11d ago

What’s worst is when they reach over to the screen and tip themselves

436

u/sim0ny03 11d ago

I was in a bar once. I ordered a beer, then the tip screen showed up, and the bartenser reached over to tap the “no tip” option. I still cant believe it happened.

u/Even_Dark7612 11d ago

I did this at the bar I used to work at regularly. Drunk people constantly cancelled the whole payment on accident a whole lot and the tip they might give was not worth the headache of dealing with all those cancelations

-68

u/Nachowelas 11d ago

as a bartender, if they’re that drunk, I’ll press the tip option myself, especially if they’ve been annoying/not tipping all night. It’s the least I can do for having to deal with these people every weekend

79

u/Even_Dark7612 11d ago

That is literally theft

-61

u/Nachowelas 11d ago

they steal years of life expectancy every night, sue me

68

u/DogeDoRight 11d ago

You choose to work there.

-49

u/Nachowelas 11d ago

im a student, and this is the best option available to me at the moment. Y’all are so quick to judge, be mad

44

u/DogeDoRight 11d ago

It's easy to judge someone when the admit to being a thief. Don't admit to committing a crime then cry when you get called out for it.

Clearly it's not if you're btching so much about it. You'd get paid better as a janitor/cleaner somewhere, but we know very well why you aren't going for that instead

1

u/obviouslyanonymous5 9d ago

I'd love to see you work their jobs for a week. Most of em are probably a lot worse than yours is

35

u/DogeDoRight 11d ago

So you're a theif

-4

u/Nachowelas 11d ago

i prefer to think of myself as a Robin Hood, my guests aren’t particularly gonna miss the money from their bank accounts

29

u/DogeDoRight 11d ago

Robin hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor, not stole from the working class to give to himself. You're just a common thief. A lowlife.

-2

u/Nachowelas 11d ago

I can assure you it’s not working class from whom i’m “stealing” from. And I share the tips with my actual working class colleagues

16

u/DogeDoRight 11d ago

So you make your colleagues an accessory to your crime. That makes it worse.

You're stealing from people who probably make less money than you, like teachers or EMTs. People with real jobs who provide real value to society.

12

u/awry_lynx 11d ago

tbh this sounds more like your fantasy than something you actually do. it only takes a couple people to catch on to cause you a fuck ton of trouble, and if this job is actually your best choice at the moment and you aren't trying to be quit of it, you'd know better. but... then again....... maybe not.

u/preciousbodyparts 11d ago

Damn, that bartender deserves a tip.

10

u/Consistent-Winter-67 11d ago

Dude is playing 4D chess

37

u/ApartInfluence4429 11d ago

they do that a lot in the UK which I admire

Is there really no option to turn the Tip Screen off?

Or is this the case of a widespread annoyance that could be easily solved by someone in charge doing one extra thing during configuration?

7

u/IsThatGruffLoner 11d ago

That's a pretty good sign the worker isn't the one receiving tips from the machines. The workers at a coffee shop I used to go to do the same thing and that was their explanation. They literally say to every customer "Don't tip on there" because they don't trust the owner. I stopped going after learning that.

That or because minimum wage laws often factor tips in, so the owner can pay less than minimum wage if tips make up the difference. So tip cash and the owner will pay them a higher per hour wage. It's all fucked up

2

u/_blip_ 11d ago

Happens all the time in Australia

2

u/unknownpoltroon 11d ago

Thats because the corporation steals the system tips.

2

u/247christmas 11d ago

That’s how it is at a local frozen yogurt shop. The woman reaches over and presses the No Tip option

2

u/Candymom 11d ago

A local Mexican restaurant here does that, too.

45

u/TotallySavageSzym 11d ago

well thats one way to get a chargeback, sorry

25

u/Lightningtow123 11d ago

And the manager called too. Might do nothing but might also fire them on the spot (as deserved for stealing from customers) which is worth the hassle

15

u/MrXwiix 11d ago

In a place that’s got multiple locations calling the manager won’t do anything. Those poor “managers” are just corporate mouthpieces employed for the sole reason of forcing idiotic strategies onto their employees. They have no say in anything. They take the heat from both corporate and the employees for barely a living wage

96

u/Prestigious-Wish-176 11d ago

that’s illegal af

14

u/SangreAppalachia 11d ago

Has that actually happened to you?

21

u/noodlesvonsoup 11d ago

What's worse is when they reach over the counter and into your pocket....

5

u/Drefann 11d ago

That depends on what pants I'm wearing. They might accidentally catch a snake if they try that.

29

u/pitshands 11d ago

That's when they get their hand slapped to prevent a fraudulent transaction. If you don't do that or at a minimum make a huge fuss you are the victim you made yourself to be. Fuck that shit

-23

u/kyl792 11d ago

Ah yes silly me, I should assault people instead of filing a chargeback later

27

u/thesplendor 11d ago

Reddit loves calling anything and everything assault

6

u/NamerNotLiteral 11d ago

Which is funny because legally it isn't even assault.

Threatening someone physically is assault. Actually hitting them is battery.

2

u/thissexypoptart 11d ago edited 11d ago

Reddit loves saying this too, but the funny thing is, even in the U.S. (let alone in non anglophone countries), there are plenty of jurisdictions that classify unwanted physical touch as just a higher degree of assault.

In New York State, for example, there is no such thing as a charge for “battery”. It’s all just different degrees of assault. Texas and Washington state as well.

It’s by no means universal that assault is a threat and battery is actually touching, but that doesn’t stop a Redditor from chiming in with that any time the topic of assault come up.

1

u/pitshands 11d ago

Why not both. And that's not assault but theft prevention

11

u/alexizh 11d ago

What’s worse is when they say “it’s going to ask you some questions” and it’s just one

2

u/NoTrollGaming 11d ago

In Ireland the person at the till will automatically reach over and select 0% / no tip for us lol

1

u/kyl792 11d ago

Huh, strange that they can’t skip the tip screen option when setting up Square or whatever service they use

2

u/NoTrollGaming 11d ago

This happens at multiple places too, not just the one business so it’s kinda weird it’s set like that

2

u/SmexyRubberDuck69 11d ago

The worst is when they tape over the "no tip" button.

1

u/justjooshing 11d ago

In Australia they reach over and tap no tip themselves

1

u/Chirimorin 11d ago

That's called theft, report it to the police.

1

u/JohnBrownsMyFather 11d ago

That’s illegal

1

u/SlyBox 11d ago

I've never had this happen lol

1

u/CaptainPoset 11d ago

It's the only right behaviour to choose "no tip" for the customer, as several card payment providers offer a fixed tip screen with highly inappropriate tips for countries outside the USA.

If you show up to your customers with a card payment terminal demanding 10%, 15% or 20% tips in Germany, that's likely the last time you will ever see this customer.

1

u/whabt 11d ago

Oh you can just complete the transaction on 99% of these terminals.

1

u/Hyrikul 9d ago

Sound like theft.

1

u/curleyfries111 8d ago

Ive only ever done this to preemptively hit no tip on tables I thought deserved a better experience. Anyone who tips themselves this eay is a crook

0

u/ProcyonHabilis 11d ago

I absolutely do not believe that has ever happened to you in real life.

People just say any old thing on the internet I guess.

27

u/teddbe 11d ago

I do negative numbers, depending on service I go from -10 to -50%

2

u/HistorianBusy2262 11d ago

Does it work? lol

19

u/GrynaiTaip 11d ago

Try typing in -50%, see if they bothered to program it properly.

2

u/DenormalHuman 11d ago

then again, see if it lets you tip '-10%' and takes money off the bill :P

1

u/ClearEater 11d ago

Or just tap the no tip button….

5

u/Badger6019 11d ago

They're saying in instances when there's not a no tip option and you need to do the above.

1

u/Acceptable_Job_5486 11d ago

These things fucking suck, however I have NEVER seen one of these that don't have a 'No Tip' option.

1

u/CommanderChiliHole 11d ago

Really? I’ve seen a fuck load that you have to hit custom then type 0 for no tip

1

u/ExerciseSad3082 11d ago

No choose custom and keep trying to put a negative number

1

u/DontMindMeFine 11d ago

As a European I would totally smile in their faces doing so. Like are we talking about tips or fees?

1

u/professor__doom 11d ago

Sometimes I type 0.01 just to let them know what I think.

1

u/RandomGoof567 11d ago

Honestly should be illegal. Some old people won’t understand that and just accept the fact they have to tip.

u/[deleted] 11d ago

10

They’re talking about other places

-1

u/irregularprotocols 11d ago

If that’s too stressful for you, maybe consider just staying home.

-18

u/chuueeriies 11d ago

It literally says "no tip" on the right

25

u/FedeFofo BULE 11d ago

They’re talking about other places

I swear comment was edited

2

1

u/Chakkoty 11d ago

Might wanna go back to sleep.

1

u/chuueeriies 11d ago

Bro that was 6 hours ago

1

u/Chakkoty 11d ago

Sleep is important.

2

u/pitshands 11d ago

There may be a "are you sure?" After that. Guilt tripping is a thing.

2

u/chuueeriies 11d ago

The chance of that is like 99%. Not arguing that.

I just noticed that mcdonalds in my country has this fuckass "donation" system forced onto you. Last time I went there like 2 years ago you had to go out of your way to "donate" anything. Now you have to go out of your way to not donate anything.

Guilt tripping you with saying, "it's just 99 cents". They have prices that compete with actual restaurants btw.

Like atp I'll just go eat in actual restaurant and order some pasta, rather than eat that shit. At least I won't be asked for a tip.

1

u/accountnumber6174 11d ago

It's not even guilt tipping at this point. They'll simply use the same loop of cancelling products/services. Probably add in a "can you tell us why"... maybe not so persistently since they still want your money.
