As a non-North American. When ordering take out, should I still tip? I remember ordering a hot drink from a cafe and the barista gave me a look when I selected no tip.
As a North American, I think tipping needs to be outlawed in general. Even with delivery drivers, the company should just pay a flat rate per mile instead of expecting ME to pay THEIR EMPLOYEE a wage so they can afford gas.
The only time tipping is good is when its treated as a bonus for exceptional service, but if corpos and feds can't be trusted to not steal said gift through taxes and $2 wages where the difference is made up by the tip pool, then the practice should die.
Edit: I've seen enough times now the argument "but wait staff/bartenders/delivery drivers don't want a fair wage because it means less money." Yeah, they are part of the problem, I'm aware. Hustle culture is bad for society, always has been.
More like the restaurant can't survive under the weight of its owners millionaire aspirations and high cost lifestyle. Restaurants shouldn't be millionaire makers, they should be owned by the people that actually work them and the profit should afford a modest and comfortable lifestyle. If I see a restaurant owner with a Maserati I just know they're a leech whose lifestyle is subsidized by tipped slave wage labor.
