I would wipe the mounded portion off and eat it. I have gone through 4lbs of crushed red pepper on pizza so far this year. I buy it in bulk

Do you get heartburn from it? I used to eat it all the time but have to go super easy now.

Not yet but I just turned 30, I anticipate that is on the horizon for me too sooner or later
