Ruined by Technology Roblox age verification verified my 6 years old nephew as 17 years old

Post image

Most kiddos like Roblox, and nephew is no exception. So when he came to me and asked me to help him set up an account, I decided to let him(and play under my supervision since I also happen to have an account). When we reached the face recognition section, it absolutely SUCKED ASS CUS WHAT DO YOU MEAN A BOY WHO IS AT HIS TENDER AGE OF GOD DAMN SIX IS SEVENTEEN. AND THE WORST PART IS I CAN’T REVERT IT TO HIS ACTUAL AGE FOR SOME REASON.

Edit: We decided not to play Roblox again after this shenanigan(which I should have done from the start)

My 20 year old partner got her twitch account suspended because the AI thought she was younger than 12

u/Shelmak_ 1d ago

Well, just like discord, better not to write "13" or something related, if someone reports your message, the system will ban you because it can't differenciate context, it assumes you are under 13 years and as it's against their tos, son banhammer strikes.

u/surlydev 1d ago

I heard of one streamer who use the phrase “Im 12” as the entry phrase for a giveaway. Chat spammed it and a lot of them got suspended accounts.

u/askiawnjka124 1d ago

Yeah writing I‘m 12 on Twitch can geht you banned.  Kinda hilarious making it as the give away phrase.

It was a fake giveaway to get people banned as a prank

Good that it's not like that on reddit otherwise you'd be banned

Yep. Doesn't matter if you literally already have your age verified either. I had someone to do that to me, so I verified my age, then less than a year later someone did it to me again and discord disabled my account again. Despite them having my face and id

46

u/Murky-Relation481 1d ago

We give the 8 year old monitored discord access. He basically only talks to me and his older brother.

One time he tried to report me just because he could (he also likes to ban and kick me from group chats he invites me to which are just me and him and functionally no different than a regular DM). I caught him, but I was like "yah that's how you lose your computer and console access" and gave him a stern talk on when and why you use that and its not for fun.

Even real people are often terrible at this, so IDK why anyone ever thought today's primitive AI would be any good at it. Someone refused to sell me a 15 rated DVD in my early 20s once, and I still can't buy alcohol sometimes even though I'm nearly 40 with a few grey hairs and loads of wrinkles. I could sometimes buy tobacco and alcohol and even drink in pubs when I was 14, too.

I have a reddit account that's over 5 years old, which I only ever used for adult topics. Based on account age and behavior reddit decided I am underage and need to provide my face (which I refuse to do)

When I was a job coach, I went to visit one of the people I supported at the middle school they cleaned (after school hours). The principal noticed me while I was walking through the halls to get to the wing my client cleaned and told me if I was waiting for my parents to pick me up, I needed to be in the office, otherwise I should be in a classroom with a teacher. I knew I looked young, but being accused of being a middle schooler was crazy.

44

u/egnards 1d ago

For reference, I'm 39:

About 3 years ago my wife and I couldn't buy beer at the grocery store on a trip to her parents house because I forgot my wallet at home and we got double carded - Double carding is a very rare thing I've experienced maybe one other time in my life and it's typically to prevent someone from buying alcohol for someone else whose under age.

In my late 20s I started working in a gen ed school in a special needs program. I probably got mistaken for a student at least 2-3 times per month. The worst situation was when one of my students bolted down the hall and I ran after him and a math teacher ran out of her room to yell at and start berating me like I was a student. . .This was a fucking 6-8th grade middle school.

9

u/a_polarbear_chilling 1d ago

A coworkers kid literally tricked the verification by scanning the face of a mannequin in a clothing store. This system is an absolute joke. Roblox wants to be able to say they have a verification system while also still reaching the same underage crowd.

1.4k

u/moitch 1d ago

The fact we're using facial recognition on children scares me even more.. that scan and associated metadata will forever be part of some database.

288

u/CedarWolf 1d ago

Well, it will be part of some database until it gets leaked or cracked or whatever, and then it will be out on the Internet, being used for only God knows what.

140

u/Vsx 1d ago

It doesn't have to be leaked or cracked. These companies sell your information willingly for what amounts to pennies.

42

u/bargu 1d ago

I've worked for a big insurance company and those fuckers trade your data like Pokemon cards, no fucks given about privacy and that was 10+ years ago.

30

u/Uncommonality 1d ago

It's only grown more intense. One of my friends from college spent some time working at a data broker. She said it's extremely shady work, out of what amounts to an entirely unmarked office building with the company having some nonsense name and effectively zero net presence except for their business registration

They primarily trade portfolios of people. Typically each person's portfolio has a unique ID, which is done to prevent the same data from being traded multiple times, and it contains everything.

All personal information you've ever dropped online, any and all documents or pictures of you hosted online, any and all confirmed and potential interests you may have, your social media accounts, the frequency of their use and your posting habits, active and inactive hours, AI analyzed trends in your speech and means of expression on services like Discord, Reddit, Whatsapp and such, links to other portfolios such as family, colleagues, friends, people you may have went to school with, your personal and professional history, family status, health conditions (confirmed and potential), and so, so, so much more.

Using a portfolio it's possible to model your psychology, place you into one of several advertising profiles and customize your experience via a service like Google AdSense to maximize engagement.

28

u/Havengul_Undying 1d ago

God knows what it l'll be used for. So does the devil. We all know what itll be used for...

12

u/Xaraxa 1d ago

It's most likely already being used to train AI to create "content" for the Epstein class.

50

u/SmokeyOkeyDokey 1d ago

While it’s objectively worse for children to have to do this, adults will also have to scan their face or ID to prove they’re an adult. Which has presented a data risk through data breaches of third-party companies doing the ID verification, like the one that partnered with Discord.

10

u/macaronysalad 1d ago

An annoying part of data sharing which needs to be regulated. You can do all the vetting in the world for a company you choose to do business with, but there is nothing legally stopping them from sharing your data with third parties who you have no idea about and how they are or aren't protecting your data. Most spam people get or breaches they're subjected to isn't even from the original company they shared data with. It's out of control and only getting worse because the government loves this loophole overriding our 4th amendment by using our tax dollars to purchase this data.

25

u/Mcnugget84 1d ago

I have some really bad news.

It’s already there. I use Google Photos. I have ultrasound pictures that were stored in the cloud before AI was a thing.

Now…. It can tell from those pictures which of my twins is which from some damn early ultrasounds.

12

u/baconboner69xD 1d ago

Yeah… privacy isn’t really a thing anymore. This kids identity was probably bought and sold 50 times already.

8

u/Mcnugget84 1d ago

I’m aware…. My kids are safer riding their bike to the local park than on their tablet. I’m glad they get outside and have IRL friends.

4

u/Cudi_buddy 1d ago

Good for you. I feel there was this weird generation or two of parents that were incredibly ignorant to the dangers of tablet/smart phones while being terrified to let their kids play in the yard with the neighbors. Feel like I see it slowly changing. Unfortunately that seems to be because all the data coming out about how damaging those devices are for young minds.

39

I can't confirm your numbers, but I'm familiar with multiple prosecutions of individuals that used Roblox to engage with children (and very many where they thought they were talking with a child but it was a state trooper).

That shit is on purpose because they know it will be wrong. They are just hoping people send in their ID's because of it so they have more information to sell to advertisers.

64

u/Which-Acanthaceae613 1d ago

That addenum of "AI can make errors please verfiy results" is going to lead to so much shit in the future. When a bank declined a loan or some ad campaign had an issue, heads would roll if they find malice. Now companies have built in liability to disciminate and just say the "AI decided" and get off without liability

46

u/ArchtypeOfOreos 1d ago

It's a platform for children, most six year olds don't have a driver's license on hand to send in. Wtf are they expecting their supposed target demographic to do?

28

u/SmokeyOkeyDokey 1d ago

In this case, it wouldn’t be for the child (because of their age and not having an ID). Parent accounts for the child would need to give their ID or biometrics, though, to link to their child’s.

So these companies can still get someone’s ID to store as data.

Yo, not gonna tell you how to raise your kids, but if you're gonna give them games try Minecraft instead. The list of grievous issues with Roblox is long but I'll keep it short.

There's no moderation and people post sex games

There has been multiple allegations associated with Roblox basically doing nothing about adults interacting with kids.

Pedos run rampant on it, in fact a YouTuber got banned for trying to bust some one doing such a thing and reporting them to Roblox.

My current boss is in the middle of a court case where not once but twice someone tried to traffic his daughter. Thankfully they trusted their dad enough to immediately tell him.

Anyway just thought you should know that this game is a literal danger in your household to children.

Play Mincraft with your kiddo it's basically digital Legos.

73

u/linkingconsequences 1d ago

i’d also add that roblox is also essentially a digital sweatshop that heavily incentivizes microtransactions, gives pennies to the people that actually made the games and their business model encourages slop games over actual well made games. there are some gems there but still.

additionally if you really want to the kid a game that’s age appropriate and they like, give them a lego game. they’re fun and generally well made

7

u/Ok-Raspberry-8099 1d ago

I agree, mine play the Lego games as well, and are currently playing with actual Legos ATM.

I spent my teens playing Minecraft starting right after its full release, Java edition as it’s now known, and it was a blast. Played on some genuinely well moderated servers and LAN worlds with friends and family. Learned quite a bit about computers too, through things like modding the game and creating my own server and texture pack. That and digital art led to me being savvy enough to do get a tech support job in college.

But yeah, I was so excited when Minecraft hit the scene because it felt exactly like digital Legos to me. My family loved building stuff with Legos but our creations always had their limits due to the cost of Legos.

Java Edition with a Realm is a very easy way for kids to safely play with friends and family and not worry about micro transactions or perverts; Bedrock is a bit more micro transaction friendly with its menu and stuff.

When you created the account for him you should have just selected the under 13 age group. If you do that it literally can't put you in the 13 and older group automatically from the face scan. It will max to the 9-12 age group.

12

u/arfelo1 1d ago

Either way, why the fuck can you not change it manually????

7

u/4d_awesome 1d ago

Originally you could. But now you HAVE to either face scan or ID scan, and if the face scan is wrong then ID is your only option.

TLDR, kids lie about their age everywhere. Except now, we’re just gonna assume everyone’s a lying kid so we don’t get sued into oblivion. Please give us all your identification that won’t definitely accidentally leak to all our third parties.

Yup, same. It was a tough situation as I came into it with my stepkid when he was 8 and already screen addicted. Pathetically so, any screen was literally like hypnosis to him. 41

u/yumyum36 1d ago

I genuinely think you're infuriated by the wrong issue.

They took a scan of your child's face?!?! Like why are you fine with that but so angry at everything else. It doesn't work because it was built to eventually become part of some government/corporate surveillance network. The accuracy never mattered. Now they got a photo of your kids face.

The game that didn't want to remove pedos because they would lose too much money, now ageing children up. Not weird at all.

14

u/IapetusApoapis342 1d ago

Your first mistake was assuming roblox is safe enough for your kid to be using it

51

u/bmm115 1d ago

I don't think lil bro should plbe playing Roblox at that age. Too many predators, too little real world experience to know the safety measures and risks.

16

u/Tandy2000 1d ago

Yeah, there is a whole problem being discussed here but there's also the issue that this 6 year old is playing Roblox at all.

Kids need to develop their critical thinking skills a lot more before interacting with strangers online. If you are gonna let your 6 year old play games online, it should only be stuff like Mario Kart where it's strictly controlled with no communication between players, or if you absolutely must, some strictly controlled environment where they can play with friends like a Minecraft server you control.

I love video games and I play video games with my daughter, but there is 0 chance I would ever let her play online games alone when she's 6 years old. Keep them to offline stuff, there's way more than enough stuff to play.

7

u/Ollie_Golly_10 1d ago

Exactly this. Roblox is literally rated T for teen for a reason, even if you monitor kids who knows what they'll do/see.

Why does Roblox have explicitly 18+ games anyway?

42

u/Crunnnch 1d ago

I think it is more to make sure people who are 18+ aren't playing with children.

36

u/-RatPack- 1d ago

If you know anything about Roblox you know this is the opposite of what they want to do.

7

u/Trollsama 1d ago

The more i learn about that game, the more Id rather let my kid do lines off a stripper than let them play it lol.

Its an old ass game a massive chunk of its playerbase started as kids and are now adults...

And as its games are community made some of those adults have made adult games.

6

u/ncopp 1d ago

Roblox is way older than people think. I remember it being a thing when I was in middle school. I turn 30 next month.

People who were kids when the game first came out are now old enough to have kids that play roblox. Pretty wild

Adults have money. Roblox likes money. If adults are gonna pay roblox money to do adult things roblox wouldn't been doing everything on their power to make money for their shareholders and that would mean they could be sued.

Not how Roblox works anymore unfortunately. You need to verify with ID still regardless

Why do we as a society allow this to exist

4

u/_Cecille 1d ago

Because everyone is either too busy trying to get by, doom scrolling 25/8, doesn't understand why it's an issue or simply doesn't care, because it "doesn't affect them".

So much stuff is protest worthy but nothing happens about, because people in power are corrupt fucks and the economy is horrible so people are a lot more worried about their immediate "survival". There's so many more reasons.

We shouldn't allow it, but we do, everyone for different reasons

9

u/pet3121 1d ago

Please dont let him play Roblox. They are games that are literally casinos with Spiderman and stuff to make it more kids friendly but at the end of the day its gambling. Available to anybody, you report it another comes up. Remember Roblox is not the game is a platform of games, plenty of predatory tactics on those games to get money out of the kids.

Maybe play a fun board game with him?

I'm not judging when I ask this, genuinely curious, What do you enjoy about Roblox and how old are you?

32

u/xXNightDriverXx 1d ago

It depends on the social situation of OPs nephew. If for example all of that boys friends play Roblox, him not being allowed to could have severe social consequences and cause him to become more distanced from his friends, or worst case, even lose them completely and get bullied as the kid with super strict parents etc.

Children are very brutal in that aspect.

It should not be that way in an ideal world, but it is.

And as long as it is done in moderation, under supervision, and with age appropriate games I think it is okay.

15

u/molecule_anteater68 1d ago

and that's why parents have to step in and say no even if there is a perceived social consequence. it sucks for a kid who feels left out but this game exists as a CSA platform.

6

u/PiccoloAwkward465 1d ago

Yeah I'm not gonna let mine melt his brain just because the other kids are doing it. I know they are and I can see the behavioral problems already.

I mean I do play board games, and many other activities with him. Heck, we hang out every other week(mostly when I am free since law school is hell incarnate). Fyi, I don’t play Roblox since 2020 as I had grown out of that phase. But I just remembered I had an account when he was talking about it, and sort of thought it would be a good idea to play together(big mistake)

The CEO got asked in an interview: "What do you think of the problem of predators on Roblox?”

And he litreally responded:  “We think of it not necessarily as a problem, but as an opportunity as well”

Should sum up the state of Roblox moderate

I can tell you one thing: don't play Roblox even with this child safety stuff it is still unsafe for kids and if something happens to him you can't even take them to court because you signed something. Also a lot of people who are specialised in child safety advice to not even touch Roblox.

But is up to you what you decide to do, this is just my advice.

Why are you letting a child scan their face for age recognition?

6

u/Mundus6 1d ago

Age verification is the biggest scam on the internet. It's in the hands of the parents. If your kid is doing stuff they are to young to be doing it's bad parenting. Whole face verification etc is just another way to collect data.

And normally the only agency in the world that actually regulates stuff (the EU) are the biggest supporters of this fiasco, so it is never going away.

6

u/hellanee 1d ago

And when I as a 23yo wanted to try that game out, AI said I am 15. Didn't want to provide documents to prove, so I had to draw wrinkles, put hair back and make a distorted annoyed sad face, only then it said i am over 21...

7

u/jerrycan-cola 1d ago

I’m 22 and it thinks I’m a pre-teen. Their “safety feature” is so dangerous

19

u/tryinsumtin 1d ago

Everybody needs to know that online games is where groomers recruit. Don't let kids who aren't old enough to understand the dangers play alone. Don't give teenagers with poor judgements adult acces to everthing. Sorry you have to be present in the moment and not playing on your phone in the other room.

Everyone knows this is a pedo breeding ground. If you let your kids play this game at this point, that’s on you.

5

u/BendyArtistic 1d ago

Both times I've had to verify, Roblox has put me in the teen group. Unfortunately I look younger than I am, so I will likely never get put in the proper age group. It's stuff like this where dependency on a faulty facial AI system makes it worse. It's never going to be accurate.

6

u/Ok_Bug_4185 1d ago

Don't let your 6 year old have access to a game that allows them to chat with strangers! Wait till they're 10-12 at least and SUPERVISE them for God's sake. My parents didn't let me get online by myself till I was 12, anything before that was supervised computer time. When they weren't home? Sucked, I watched TV.

6

u/ReeceReddit1234 1d ago

My xbox account (which asked for Age Verification) decided I was old enough one day. I'm sure they had their own factors at play but my account is like 10 years old I think?

u/Lvlyoppsm 1d ago

Or… You could’ve just manually verified the birthday instead of letting an AI do it, and the child would be in the correct age group. It’s not a person that scans the face and determines age, it’s an AI, so it’s bound to be wrong sometimes.

I see so many people complaining ab being put in the wrong age group, and they never actually try to manually fix it, they just complain 💀

21

u/AbramJH 1d ago

I mean, it’s outwardly insane that part of their process is to just guess and then apply that age. That is indeed an insane thing to do and should be called out as such.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought you needed to give legal documentation to verify your age without the face scanner? A lot of people are not comfortable with that

15

u/tastyugly 1d ago

Why would Roblox use AI to guess children's age in the first place. I get people can adjust it manually, but having it guess-timate an age in the first place seem asinine

6

u/Dahnlen 1d ago

It’s insane that to “keep kids safe” they are asking children to be photographed and then judged by an AI.
