I canceled last year.

I'm done with streaming.  I'm back to physical media.

Go to your library.  They have more than books to check out.

i cancelled everything and assumed i would start pirating, but what's ended up happening instead is that i just watch nothing.

u/H_J_Rose 1d ago

Tbh that’s way better than giving any of them your money.

50

u/Putrid-VII 1d ago

...who gets the money from the pirating though?

58

u/GrandmasBoyToy69 1d ago

My vpn provider

3

u/Cubbance 6h ago

Exactly. And my vpn hasn't raised its prices in the decade I've been using this one.

2

u/Isayfyoujobu 22h ago

Which one do you use?

1

u/GrandmasBoyToy69 8h ago

Nord vpn. Really love the fact that my fire stick supports it and i can basically watch YouTube ad free by connecting to a Albania server.

u/Sabermatrixx 1d ago

You. Because you're not giving fuckwad corporations money.

14

u/-Nightopian- 21h ago

I call that trickle down economics.

u/H_J_Rose 1d ago

Won’t someone think of the CEOs?!

u/MPyro 21h ago

debrid service

u/brightfutureman 1d ago

Did the very same thing already and never look back! More free time and money. Besides, there are not too much to watch at the first place to pay such an amount to some streaming company. Shitty content mostly or old that you watched few times. What’s the reason?! And they ruined old good movie/series (45m, 22 per season) concept demand and just copy/paste shitty series with the story repeating like for imbeciles.

2

u/Sptsjunkie 23h ago

Other thing is, people will stay for a series they like, but unless you watch a ton of TV, you can purchase a full series from your provider of choice and rent a couple of movies a month for less than you are paying for streaming.

u/Due_Profession3023 1d ago

i watch a ton of youtube on my 85” lol

20

u/TESTINGSTUFFPL 1d ago

*You watch a ton of unskippable ads on your 85"

Seriously fuck Google for the way they ruined YouTube.

Look at Mr. Richy-Richard with all of his memory.

Shits like a gold mine anymore

1

u/EntertainerNo4509 1d ago

Thats prob the best and simplest option for me too.

1

u/mightylordredbeard 1d ago

I mean you don’t even need to pirate anymore. There’s 100s of really good streaming sites out there and many with better UIs than the billion dollar companies are capable of making.

The only downside to most of those sites is they load them up with annoying ass popups and porn ads. So it’s absolutely necessary to use Adblock which means unless you have a solid network ad block via a pi or something, then you’re limited to just streaming on your PC or phone. Which for me I use my game console to stream on my TV and consoles have absolute garbage built in Adblock.. only option is an Adblock DNS but even then it doesn’t get them all and you still need to deal with popups.. just popups of empty pages since for whatever reason browsers will not actually add solid popup blocking.

Dear Disney, As someone who enjoys "general entertainment " (as Disney put it) iforced for years to pay for ESPN, as part of my cable and satellite subscriptions! That kept going up because you (Disney) kept jacking up the price for said channel(s). So, many of us left those platforms, only to be met by the same greed! We will no longer be playing or paying for these games will and enjoy the SAME entertainment by other means (search YouTube, you'll find plenty of pirate apps)! Going forward, we will no longer have to worry about these outrageous markups every few months! Sincerely everyone

I personally have a plex server that has around 25tb of data on it...movies, TV shows, concerts....I also use keepstreams that allows me to rip/download stuff off of all of the streaming sites, and then I torrent whatever I cant find there. All my friends use it and because I have so much content on there they've all canceled their streaming services in favor of my free stuff.

I just love helping people save money.

"If buying isnt owning, then pirating isnt stealing."

16

u/Any-Mammoth-3251 1d ago

For noobs like myself, do you have some sort of self starter guide you would recommend for setting something like this up? I have cancelled everything except Netflix (that's next if they introduce ads where I am) and torrent some things but would like to set up my own library. I was thinking of going back to burning CDs but I don't even think my laptop supports those anymore.

14

u/Mr_Seg 1d ago

Free Media Heck Yeah has all the info you need

5

u/SackFullaGrapes 1d ago

I second this

3

u/Any-Mammoth-3251 1d ago

I recently upgraded from a 35m2 living space and pretty excited to finally have space to build a physical media collection. But I've forgot the basics and literally know less than an amateur about basic hygiene with torrenting.

2

u/-Nightopian- 21h ago

That last line is so true.

These greedy corporations have gone too far.

1

u/PropertyDangerous257 20h ago

Thank you for your service!

38

u/SnarkyAnxiety 1d ago

Fun fact. If you have a library card there is an excellent chance your local library is part of the Kanopy streaming platform. This will allow you to "check out" thirty or more movies, TV series, etc a month via your library card

4

u/Imaginary_Tower_4939 17h ago

Don't forget about Hoopla as well. My library offers both.

9

u/AaronfromKY 1d ago

The only bad news there is that some libraries are going to start charging for that service if you don't actually live in the area. Cincinnati public library is ending free reciprocity next year with Northern Kentucky Counties. I feel like this could spread across the country.

3

u/Spare-Shirt24 1d ago

That's pretty cool! Thanks for the info. I'm going to look into it

1

u/moonberrytea 1d ago

I like Kanopy but they only give me 10 tix per month ☹️

16

u/Ok_Zookeepergame5141 1d ago

I'm going to try this. Ngl... it will be like going cold turkey from heroin.

17

u/Spare-Shirt24 1d ago

It's definitely different.

I've also picked up other ways to entertain myself in the evenings.  I'm learning a new language, picked up watercolor painting, read more, etc.

When I want to zone out and watch something, I pop in a DVD, or check one out from the library.

17

u/AppropriateDinner528 1d ago

I finally discovered DVD's from the library. It's like taking a trip back in time to Blockbuster.

It is a whole different experience when you plan your viewing ahead. No more endless doom scrolling trying to find something to watch. We watch what we check out and that's the end of it.

7

u/SpotweldPro1300 1d ago

Or like going from heroin to Richard Simmons aerobics tapes.

1

u/Prize_Ostrich7605 1d ago

Find your local Streamers Anonymous. AA don't take too kindly to non-alcoholics, so chances of relapse are higher.

3

u/Ok_Zookeepergame5141 1d ago

They probably just talk about old episodes of their favorite shows that they used to stream 😭

1

u/CrissBliss 1d ago

But you’ll have more money

1

u/tryyeezus 1d ago

Once you realize that all mainstream television is produced to manipulate you (not entertain you), it becomes much easier to walk away

16

u/Far-Drama3779 1d ago

Honestly thats something people fail to realize, it's a great idea, thank you for the reminder

53

u/JROCC_CA 1d ago

I love this idea! I have a whole bookshelf, full of DVDs and Blu-rays. I never gave up on physical media. I still look for used DVDs that I don’t own.

25

u/InterestingLion6041 1d ago

Same. My husband and I are closing in on 50 so we have a ton of DVDs from back in the day when that was the way you watched new movies outside of going to the theater. Streaming was cool af when it first came around ngl and we got rid of cable to move to streaming. But, like with anything in this capitalistic hellscape, media companies wanting to extract every $ they can from us, ruined it. Now it's like buying a la carte cable. $30 for this platform, $25 for this other one... it's now more expensive to have all of the streaming platforms than it is to have cable again. I have to sit down and figure out which ones I pay for, which ones my husband pays for, and which my daughter pays for and either cancel them all or keep only the ones we use regularly. I don't think our Disney+ subscription is being used much anymore. My daughter watched all she wanted to watch and now I think I'm just paying for a platform no one watches. I'm so sick of this shit... the people with the most are trying to extract every cent they can from people with the least. In every aspect of our lives.

6

u/pit-of-despair 1d ago

Yeah, I’m with you about the physical media thing. A few years ago the last video store in my town went out of business and I scored big time on new and used videos for cheap. I had a lot even before that.

8

u/Other_Respect_6648 1d ago

I enjoy the seven seas

1

u/HollowNomad23 1d ago

But are you a friend of Judy Garland ?

5

u/squaige 1d ago

Our library has a ton of passes for museums/gardens around us (probably more but that’s what I’ve looked for) and a whole catalogue of random tools, party stuff, house stuff you can reserve to check out.

6

u/QueefTamer 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes. Going to the library is fun. My gf gets her book and I get the movies. I got a bluray player for a good deal. They also rent bluray players for free. They have a lot of games and they allow you to rent it for a full month at our place.

3

u/chriseldonhelm 1d ago

My wife and I have done the same. There is a used electronic store that sells dvds and bluerays cheap. We are building are collection up.

4

u/PauI_MuadDib 1d ago

You can stream through your library too. My library offers Binge Passes through Hoopla and you get free access to certain subscription services for, I think a week. My partner watches Hallmark+ that way 😂

3

u/SuspendedResolution 1d ago

Thanks for reminding me I need to get a new library card.

2

u/CrissBliss 1d ago

Libraries are awesome

2

u/Engineary 1d ago

Ours even has a "library of things" section, where you can check out power tools, sewing machines, even yard games! ❤️

1

u/LtLemur 1d ago

Mine even has Roku devices with these and other apps already loaded onto them

1

u/squaige 1d ago

1

u/Apathetic_Villainess 1d ago

I wish there was a library closer to where I live and easier to get to. D; I just find the not-legal sites hosting or torrent things I really want to watch.

1

u/DrRealName 1d ago

I cancelled all my streaming accounts too. Back to physical media and sailing the high seas. 15 years ago I stopped sailing because the deals were reasonable and it didn't make sense anymore. Now we're back to cable levels of greed and every streaming service is 99% unwatchable garbage anyway to pad up their content numbers.

1

u/heikkiiii 1d ago

Theres another way, the way of the high seas!

1

u/Maleficent_Energy_55 1d ago

I subscribe to Criterion Channel and Apple TV (because it’s in a bundle I use) but nothing else. I planned to subscribe to channels one month at a time here and there and never bother.

1

u/mtbcouple 1d ago

Let me just go check out the latest Lioness VHS box sets from my local library. BRB.

1

u/submarinefarm 1d ago

Plenty of better options than going to a library to get a DVD.

1

u/djprofitt 1d ago

The challenge for me is living in a dense city that would supersede the number of copies of any given movie, so it would result in me being on a waiting list for X amount of weeks sometimes to get a movie, physical or digital.

1

u/SmokingGunontheRun 1d ago

Introduced my mum to the show Resident Alien a few months ago and got all 4 seasons on DVD through our local library system.

Them having movies and TV series available to borrow was nothing new to me, but when I went to a different branch to pick up one of the box sets, saw that there was a whole section dedicated to PS5 and XBOne games. What the whaaaaa?! Blew my mind!

1

u/MontasJinx 1d ago

Earlier this year for us.

Plex is also doing some stupid stuff like this. Jellyfin for the win!!

1

u/NotSoSasquatchy 23h ago

Yard sales and flea markets are great places to find used DVDs

1

u/FallenHarmonics 23h ago

All I have is YouTube Premium and Netflix. Everything else I sail the seven seas for, even sports.

1

u/Surly_Sailor_420 18h ago

My library also has hoopla, and we stream movies/shows from our fire stick all the time.

1

u/lilacomets 16h ago

The next stop is that they'll stop releasing physical media.

2

u/Spare-Shirt24 11h ago

Yep. It's already starting.

I think it was Playstation that announced something to that effect.

I rarely play video games, but when I do, I only buy physical copies.

When they stop creating physical copies, I'm done.

u/ta112233 1d ago edited 1d ago

This. Disney DVDs are a dime a dozen at your local thrift store or goodwill. Onetime spend of $30 will get 10 of your kids favorite movies and then you’re no longer a slave to streaming.
