I'm done with streaming. I'm back to physical media.
Go to your library. They have more than books to check out.

Did the very same thing already and never look back! More free time and money. Besides, there are not too much to watch at the first place to pay such an amount to some streaming company. Shitty content mostly or old that you watched few times. What’s the reason?! And they ruined old good movie/series (45m, 22 per season) concept demand and just copy/paste shitty series with the story repeating like for imbeciles.

I personally have a plex server that has around 25tb of data on it...movies, TV shows, concerts....I also use keepstreams that allows me to rip/download stuff off of all of the streaming sites, and then I torrent whatever I cant find there. All my friends use it and because I have so much content on there they've all canceled their streaming services in favor of my free stuff.
I just love helping people save money.

For noobs like myself, do you have some sort of self starter guide you would recommend for setting something like this up? I have cancelled everything except Netflix (that's next if they introduce ads where I am) and torrent some things but would like to set up my own library. I was thinking of going back to burning CDs but I don't even think my laptop supports those anymore.

Fun fact. If you have a library card there is an excellent chance your local library is part of the Kanopy streaming platform. This will allow you to "check out" thirty or more movies, TV series, etc a month via your library card

I'm going to try this. Ngl... it will be like going cold turkey from heroin.
14
u/Spare-Shirt24 1d ago
It's definitely different.
I've also picked up other ways to entertain myself in the evenings. I'm learning a new language, picked up watercolor painting, read more, etc.
When I want to zone out and watch something, I pop in a DVD, or check one out from the library.
16
u/AppropriateDinner528 1d ago
I finally discovered DVD's from the library. It's like taking a trip back in time to Blockbuster.
It is a whole different experience when you plan your viewing ahead. No more endless doom scrolling trying to find something to watch. We watch what we check out and that's the end of it.

I love this idea! I have a whole bookshelf, full of DVDs and Blu-rays. I never gave up on physical media. I still look for used DVDs that I don’t own.
25
u/InterestingLion6041 1d ago
Same. My husband and I are closing in on 50 so we have a ton of DVDs from back in the day when that was the way you watched new movies outside of going to the theater. Streaming was cool af when it first came around ngl and we got rid of cable to move to streaming. But, like with anything in this capitalistic hellscape, media companies wanting to extract every $ they can from us, ruined it. Now it's like buying a la carte cable. $30 for this platform, $25 for this other one... it's now more expensive to have all of the streaming platforms than it is to have cable again. I have to sit down and figure out which ones I pay for, which ones my husband pays for, and which my daughter pays for and either cancel them all or keep only the ones we use regularly. I don't think our Disney+ subscription is being used much anymore. My daughter watched all she wanted to watch and now I think I'm just paying for a platform no one watches. I'm so sick of this shit... the people with the most are trying to extract every cent they can from people with the least. In every aspect of our lives.

u/pit-of-despair 1d ago

This is Disney's very public plan. Low price to entice consumers into buying it and then slow step up to get past the loss, to break even and then profit.
The problem is that they have by far the best catalog out there, especially when you get one of the bundles.

Trust me that your child doesn't need to watch Moana for the 725th time, and if they do then just buy the damn bluray for less than your Disney+ monthly charge would have been to begin with

I cancelled Netflix a month ago, something I've been subscribing to since 2008 - The only reason I haven't cancelled Disney/Hulu is because I'm still on a much older Verizon plan that they keep trying to get me to "upgrade" [to a worse plan for more money] that pays for the bundle for me. I'll use the app for free, and would pay for it at a reasonable cost, but I'm not paying those prices.
6
u/TinyAdeptness5166 1d ago
I'm in a similar situation, I get the low tier of HBO Max for free with my phone plan, it's not great but sometimes more convenient

u/quikmantx 1d ago
I cut Netflix for the first time since 2018 2 weeks ago. I don't pay for Disney+ but I do pay for Hulu.
When Hulu gets swallowed into Disney+, I'll probably cut it too. I hate ads and I expect a big price increase as a result of them putting the two together.
40
u/MadTube 1d ago
Been subscribed to Disney+ since its inception. Last year, I barely squeaked by on the price hike. My renewal was just before the big jump. So my subscription went from $70 (last year) to $190 (this year).

I was fine when streaming for a whole family was around 10 bucks. I could stop pirating for little money, and I didn’t have to watch ads like on TV. Now those greedy fuckers all want 20+ bucks, track your logins so you’re forced to upgrade to a more expensive plan for multiple people, produce mostly trash, and have introduced ads into the basic subscription tiers. They’re becoming unpleasant and inconvenient for the user overall which was the ONLY reason so many people switchted to them in the first place. I guess I’m back to sailing the seven seas.

The justification is simple: PEOPLE PAY IT. This is a 100% discretionary income CHOICE. So if you think it's too expensive, cancel. In fact, when people accept the increase and don't cancel, the message you're sending is that the price was too low before, because you're willing to pay more.

It's insane so many of us accepted a half dozen tv subscriptions in our lives. If you have an absolute must see show and don't wanna sail the high seas, just sub for a month after the season is over and binge it over the month. It's not like the 90's when we got 25 episode seasons. You're getting 6 to 12 episodes tops. That can be knocked out easily in a month with some effort. Then move on

JFC people stop using streaming services if you're just going to complain about being milked. This is like the TCG people who just HAVE to buy the next Pokemon expansion. Move on and find a more sustainable form of entertainment. May I suggest the library where about half of the source material for movies and shows comes from. We don't have to be a heteronomous species addicted to screens. Creature comforts are fine and everything but learn to have some control and know how to pivot when you start to get priced out.
