Are you sure they're not testing you for dementia?

2.9k

u/Babetna 9h ago

My thoughts exactly. These aren't riddles these are... descriptions. And the above question literally tests long term memory.

399

u/bb_dev_g 5h ago edited 5h ago

The above question will also need an update at some stage. There are 20+ year olds who have no memories of the 90s.

155

u/VibraniumQueen 5h ago

I'm 29 and have no memory

203

u/Vast-Ad1915 5h ago

Completely understandable, RAM prices are through the roof

21

u/VibraniumQueen 5h ago

Lmao, I knew if I didnt specify, i would get unhinged comments.

That being said, I bought two ram sticks in 2020 for my pc, and for some god forsaken reason, my pc wont run if both are in at the same time. Tried each one by itself in different seating positions, and they're all fine. But the moment both are in there? Bsod.

14

u/G66GNeco 4h ago

Had that issue before and it turned out that something was specifically funky with whatever controls dual channel on one of the two sticks. Gotta test both against known good sticks to be sure it's not a minor issue with the new ones after all (there's also, like, 5 different bios options capable of causing this or similar issues but I feel like troubleshooting a 6 year old issue might be a bit of a fools errand)

That being said I, too, am 29 with no memory of the 90s. Though tbh I might have memories connected to 90s music specifically if I dig enough?

3

u/VibraniumQueen 3h ago

I mean, my fiance works in IT (and was the one trying to fix this issue before giving up) but this was just supposed to be a budget computer for me to play Lego Star wars, fortnite, and cyberpunk 2077 on. So like... it works?

Idk, I'll show him your comment and see what he says.

Ik he definitely tried different bios stuff.

Im 50 and have no memory. Just this sense that I lived life to the fullest in the 90's.

There is a possibility they are trying to recognize Post-Op Delerium, though that seems more of a risk with seniors.

https://utswmed.org/medblog/postoperative-delirium-seniors-recognizing-symptoms-reducing-risks/

82

u/SquirrelStone 6h ago

Well if you’re getting a hysterectomy there’s a chance it’s because you’ve got post-menopausal bleeding or something that’s often age-related.

821

u/havens1515 9h ago

These are the tests that Trump likes to brag about "acing"

53

u/Rahm420 6h ago

Hey now, I didn’t know those questions. He must be a genius for knowing them 😤

Thank you for your attention to this comment.

I had a high school SAP teacher adamantly believe that what you call the TV clicker in your everyday life is who you are as a person. Like a "what this says about you" survey from a gossip mag.

So that last question sounded like it was from him specifically.

It was something like: Converter = changing people personality, Remote = hermit personality, etc. I can't remember them all.

355

u/send_fleet_pics 9h ago

Who the fuck calls it a converter

or a TV clicker

186

u/Proof_Arugula_7001 9h ago

Right!? Are people really using any term other than Tube Wand?

89

u/Potential_Win_6791 8h ago

Are you all talking about the channel changer?

35

u/MyShotHam1776 7h ago

Surely you mean the TV Boss?

12

u/5k17 7h ago

As in, a Megatron?

12

u/Nienista 6h ago

OMG you just reminded me that is what we called it growing up. When did it change to "remote"?!

→ More replies (1)

5

u/hollow-earth 5h ago

Channel changer family here as well

12

u/maaaaaaaaaaaaads 5h ago

My family calls it the flipper lmao I don’t think I’ve heard it called that outside my family though.

u/Final_Candidate_7603 6h ago

That probably goes all the way back to how the original remotes worked. There were four buttons- channel up, channel down, volume up, volume down. Each one triggered a tiny rubber hammer on a spring, which hit a metal rod. The rods were different lengths and widths, and each made a distinctively different sound. The TV picked up on that sound signal and performed the desired operation. The release of the spring did make a clicking noise.

This is bringing back a very old memory of when I was a kid and had a paper route. On Fridays after dinner time I would go to each customer’s house and collect the weekly subscription fee. IIRC, for all seven days, it was $1.35, so most people would give me $1.50 in change, the extra was a tip. I guess it was easy for people to set aside some pocket change every week, so I hardly ever got paper money. On Friday evenings I would sit in the living room in front of the TV, and dump my bag of change on the floor a little at a time and start counting and wrapping the coins. I noticed right away that the jangling of the coins as they fell would make the TV do something, and had a lot of fun tricking my siblings and parents into thinking I had some kind of magic TV-changing powers.

Love this story

88

u/more2cuddle 9h ago

31

u/Early_Argument5075 8h ago

Oh I how I aged reading that… I’ll just be out back waiting to be put down

27

u/Chrispeefeart 7h ago

Clicker used to be common a very long time ago because the buttons audibly clicked when they when pressed.
Converter is a narrow regional term that got its name from when the controller was physically wired to the cable converter box.

46

u/Parker_Barker_III 9h ago

I call it a clicker! Mostly to bug people, and I can’t stop now.

29

u/redvsblueheeler 8h ago

I grew up saying clicker. My mom must say it. Is it a Midwest thing?

40

u/DrocketX 8h ago

The term clicker comes from the very first TV remote controls. They didn't use batteries - they instead used ultrasound tones. They had 4 buttons (channel up and down and volume up and down) and when you pressed one, it hit a metal bar inside that would vibrate, each at a different frequency. The TV would listen for this and take action based on the tone it heard. Because it was basically a mallet inside hitting the bar, it would emit a loud click with every button press (though you couldn't hear the tone itself because it was too high of a frequency for humans.)

Basically, the term clicker is a skeuomorph - one of those bits left over from old technology, like using a 3.5 inch floppy to represent saving in computer software.

u/GhostMaskKid 8h ago

Southern US and we called it a clicker growing up!

6

u/FeuerSchneck 7h ago

I'm from New England and I've always said clicker. I got teased for it a bit when I moved to the west coast though.

5

u/ButterflyFew2523 7h ago

It’s a clickah in MA

4

u/Quirky-Shallot644 8h ago

Im from the midwest and it has always been called a remote 🤷‍♀️

4

u/AdrianaLaServing 7h ago

I’m from the UK and have always called it a clicker.

11

u/MotherStatement1109 8h ago

We called it "the flipper" at my house lmao

20

u/OldGreySweater 9h ago

I grew up calling it a converter! I’m Canadian. And born in the 80s.

7

u/clutzyninja 8h ago

What is it converting?

16

u/OldGreySweater 8h ago

The push of the button into a channel change DUH

9

u/DrocketX 8h ago

A cable signal into a TV signal, or at least the device it controlled did. The name comes from the Starcom Cable TV Converter, one of the earliest cable boxes and it came with what was for a lot of people their first TV remote control back in the 1970's. The controller itself wound up starting to be call a converter (even though that was really more the box), and the name kind of stuck for quite a few people.

u/Ira-Spencer 4h ago

Clicker is common. Had a tenant that called it a "turner" which was a new one for me.

Now my family, being all classy, always called it a "mokentroll"

3

u/Happy-Telephone9483 4h ago

In my house growing up, a "turner" was what we called a spatula.

6

u/thesoggydingo 7h ago

My family had always called the remote a "clicker". No idea why

32

u/TiresOnFire 6h ago

An early version of the TV remote clicked, no batteries required. It had 3 or 4 buttons. When you pressed one, a hammer would hit a metal rod that would ring at a certain pitch. The receiver on the TV would respond to that tone.

7

u/Hubsimaus 6h ago

That's actually cool. No need for batteries at the most inconvenient times.

6

u/kindnessincmusic 5h ago

I don't remember this, but I remember having a TV with a wired remote

4

u/Happy-Telephone9483 4h ago edited 4h ago

A lot of Canadian boomers (and up) definitely used to call them converters, though really the word referred to the cable box that sat on top of the giant wooden television (which converted the coaxial cable from the wall to the RF antenna connection on old TVs), which they called a "converter box," and which the "converter" controlled. Is that synecdoche?

3

u/Stormfeathery BLUE 6h ago

Growing up my family would call it the clicker

3

u/animatedpileofmeat 5h ago

I still say clicker!

To be fair I was raised by my grandmother lol

3

u/GenerallySpecified 4h ago

My family still uses clicker, to the point my kids have started using it. I guess I'm helping keep the term alive into the next generation.

42

u/Sithstress_ 8h ago

When I was young parents called them “kids.”

15

u/the_stoned_ranger 5h ago

Old gf of mine used to call them “the buttons.” It makes sense but I’ve never heard anyone else use that. I think she said she picked it up from her grandma.

Shoot does no one call it a controller?

3

u/Ok_Industry_2395 7h ago

My parents did!

8

u/GustapheOfficial 6h ago

In Swedish, "button" is "knapp" and "device" is "apparat", so as I'm sure you've already figured out anyone worth knowing here calls it a "knapparat".

"I have passed this test many times. I aced it. Got 100%. It is very difficult to get 100%. But I did it. No president before me has ever done it. But I did it. I did it many times actually. The doctors were impressed. They said wow you are so good. A 100% nobody got a 100% before me. It's very difficult. But I did it."

Edit: "I would like to say thank you for the awards. The beautiful women and beautiful, sexy men. Very nice men. Great men. Strong men. Who gave me these beautiful awards. But I knew I would get them. Everybody knew. I deserved them. I deserved it far more than anyone. Everybody forgot about the other guy. Even I forgot about him. So I got the great awards. Even greater than great. The greatest, some people would say."

Edit 2: "I already have many awards. The most awards. Nobody has ever had so many awards. But if I get one more award, just one more, I will give every redditor 5,000 upvotes. Upvotes they call it. I will give them 5,000 upvotes. Nobody has ever done it. People say it's impossible. But I will. Very difficult. But I will do it. I will do it many times. I will do it like this. Click click click..."

Edit 3: "A good friend of mine, a really good friend, sent me gold. Real gold. Very beautiful gold. It's the best gold, better than the best, most people would say. I deserve it. Many people are saying I deserve it."

Edit 4: "The fake news media is saying somebody else has more upvotes in this post. 7,000 they say. Fake news. Totally fake. I demand a recount. Because nobody has more upvotes than me. Everybody knows it. People want me. They really do. They say, Mr. President, we really need you. They say it."

u/PM_me_oak_trees 4h ago

I saw a family member get a cognitive test years ago, and I noticed that they didn't tell her when she got something wrong. It's possible that a lack of feedback is all it took to convince that guy that he had a perfect score.

115

u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe 5h ago

The real question is why do they feel the need to test you so often?

Thank you! My brain said MP3 Player, then I was like well no maybe CD Player, then I was like what if it’s suppose to be Radio. Then I decided I would fail this test and be diagnosed with dementia or whatever it’s actually testing for lmao.

It's ok. I can give you hints if you get stuck.

41

u/cardboard-kansio 9h ago

I'm actually not sure what the first one is. Why would you smile just because there's music? This seems like something highly specific and possibly cultural (the other three were straightforward).

9

u/rob132 5h ago

I thought it was a music box with a twirling ballerina.

15

u/Urithiru 8h ago

People are saying radio but I thought doorbell. You smile when the resident answers the door.

Just post-surgery testing. Basic cognition. They are making sure you are ok.

20

u/iamkris10y 7h ago

Are they assuming you're still zooted from pain killers?

21

u/bliip666 5h ago

Are they testing for brain damage? I know anaesthesia can be dangerous, but come on!

17

u/CheapTactics 3h ago

Are you sure you didn't actually get a hemispherectomy?

15

u/Devchonachko 8h ago

The riddle I want answered is what was the copay for this recovery book? I'm guessing insurance knocked it down to somewhere in the ballpark of $17.

19

u/katobye 2h ago

The way I read the first one and tried to think past the obvious answer bc “its a riddle”…felt so dumb when I got to the second and realized it was that obvious 🫣

7

u/ritathecat 1h ago

I’m not going to lie, the smile part kind of threw me off. I don’t necessarily smile every time I listen to the radio.

35

u/Anders_A 5h ago

I assume this is for children and not hysterectomy patients 😂

34

u/Miiohau 4h ago

I would you could be possibly right but a question above the riddles asks for a memory from the 90s. It is possibly a dementia workbook they had lying around.

10

u/NoCommonDog 4h ago

President Trump aced this test. He's a stable genius.

96

u/IsSixAlot 10h ago

Is this a bot ragebaiting? There are huge connections between the uterus and the brain. This a simple cognitive test. Do you still know what a radio, TV, headphones and remote are? If not, surgery caused a huge chemical release in your brain that may mess with recall and recollection.

89

u/havens1515 9h ago

Then why call them riddles? To see if you have the mental capacity to realize that these aren't riddles?

Seriously, just call it a mental capacity test at that point.

49

u/nalaloveslumpy 9h ago

Because it's easier for the patient to engage if it seems like a game. Also, people behave differently when they know they're being tested, and this helps solve for that.

If the nurse notices they're struggling to finish the "riddles" then that triggers a more thorough test.

48

u/Rooney_Tuesday 9h ago

Are there places (other than dementia care-specific units) where nurses hand out activity books to patients as a secret cognition test? Because that seems wildly inappropriate and I’ve never seen anything like it in my 20+ years of healthcare.

When you’re doing orientation tests, you just ask simple questions and see how the person answers. Nurses do not remotely have time to hand out, collect, and score paper tests like this.

If you actually were doing a dementia or cognitive test (and I’m not aware of anyplace that these are routinely done simply because you had a hysterectomy?), then knowing that you are taking a cognitive test is absolutely disclosed to you. There is no reason for it to be a secret. If you are cognitively impaired then it will be evident even if you know you’re being tested.

Reddit experts are at it again.

12

u/anonymouslyonlyme 6h ago

Also like this doesn't seem like a required assignment. So the people who are like "wow thanks for the paper where's my phone?" don't get tested. Either it's important so everyone's tested or it's not and no one is. Not this weird if someone decides to do it and then fails we will maybe know it if we happen to walk by and see it testing

10

u/Cloverose2 5h ago

Exactly. If I were doing a cognitive assessment, I would go in, introduce myself, briefly explain the assessment and be able to methodically collect the results. I absolutely wouldn't rely on hovering over someone to see if they do optional activities that most people wouldn't do aloud. Assessments aren't administered in secret "gotcha" format.

It’s not like this is getting turned in to be graded. And if it was, you can’t trick someone into doing cognitive testing. That’s unethical and goes against informed consent. Doctors are required to explain tests and why it’s being done.

Bottom line is this is definitely not for medical purposes.

I'd struggle with this just because I can feel my eyes roll into the back of my head if I were given such stupid shit to fill out as an adult for no reason (that I know of).

can confirm, had a hysterectomy and I'm practically braindead most of the time. I can still use reddit though, it's basically the same

u/Devanyani 9h ago

All of us have had brainectomy's already. You can barely tell!

Ohhhh radio!! 😂 All I could think of was my kids' music making toys hahaha

10

u/NinjaOnStandby 8h ago

And I was over here listing all the devices that play music: iPod, smartphones, cd player, Walkman, radio... it took me a while to get to radio really and I was still leaning towards ipod because of the singular button wording.

3

u/beingachristianwife 5h ago

Hahaha could even have been those musical birthday cards! The question definitely needs to be updated to match the times lol

5

u/Equal_Yak_3872 5h ago

Uh oh, sounds like you better go see your uterus doctor asap! 🤣

3

u/JP147 PURPLE 8h ago

I was thinking iPod

6

u/TheGanksta 8h ago

You're obviously not sound of mind, first one is a Walkman not a radio and second one is The Kidnapper showing you the videos he recorded through your window after tying you up.

6

u/ta_mataia 6h ago

Are they giving hysterectomies to children now?

11

u/Status_Reflection993 10h ago

I do not understand how these are riddles? Any of them. Radio (stereo,  mp3 player etc.) Television, headphones, remote control (box, clicker, controller, whatever the fuck you call it)

3

u/Devanyani 9h ago

I'm old, so for the first one I thought "CD player" and chuckled to myself. Then I read the other "riddles".

Those aren’t riddles, those are questions.

26

u/Ambitious-Border-906 10h ago

Why are you infuriated by the riddles? Is it because you are stuck…

29

u/Lemansblu 10h ago

I can’t figure it out

u/JetNeoArmstrongCanon 10h ago

Then you are still to high to have recovered

15

u/RedEclipse47 10h ago

As the other person suggested, it might be dementia.

Jokes aside, these aren't really riddles, they just describe every day objects.

16

u/pm_me_fibonaccis 10h ago

You're thinking too hard. They're not riddles.

10

u/techo-soft-girl 10h ago

I think they’re very easy just not proper riddles. I can’t help but wonder if they’re AI generated.

Because they have the flow of a riddle and they’re describing things, but there’s no fun twist.

u/tryptanfelle 6h ago

These are leaked questions from Celebrity Jeopardy.

u/Disposadwarf 1h ago

there are two things to keep in mind about the riddles.

first, this is a riddle for everyone. riddles usually rely on a cultural fact, linguistic pun, or thinking well outside the box. people have different backgrounds and a clever riddle for one person will fall flat for another.

two, this is a screening tool. any anesthetics carries risk and simple things like this can expose if you had a mini stroke or other anaesthetic complication. for that it needs to be simple.
