I dont have a pantry but I do have dogs that have, in the past, stolen whole loaves of bread from the counter. I don't always have room in the fridge or freezer, so bread and tortillas go in a bread box. One nice thing about the bread box is that you can have stuff on top of it, which you can't do with bread.
I actually like OP's girlfriend's solution because it looks like having it sideways may actually give it more flat surface to use on top.
After my BC passed I continued to push food back from the edge of the counter so he wouldn’t grab it. The number of sticks of butter he ate, it’s surprisingly that he didn’t die of heart failure. 🤣😭
I still will sometimes hide things in the oven from my cat who passed last year. I do have another cat, who never really went on the counter... Until 2 DAYS AGO!!! Now I have to hide my toaster 🤦♀️
Mine only steal the fancy butter. If I buy plain butter and leave it on the counter it's fine. But if i buy Kerrygold or rolled butter and leave it out, it gets stolen.
The day after thanksgiving one year, we woke up and found our cat about halfway through a stick of butter. That’s when we realized he had probably been licking the butter for years and we’d just never caught him before.
Yeah my counters are prime real estate for other stuff with a smallish kitchen. A vertical breadbox would be neat tho, her solution is gold. I do love the old mid-century ones. Those are the cutest. I kind of made the comment to be silly. She can store her bread however she likes. It's 7:30am, I'm still in bed,, I've got houseguests, and I really dont wanna get outta bed to fuss over their needs right now 🤣 this is WAY better. Heehee
My wife loves a bread box. She has bought like 5 different ones in the last year and a half.. she can't make up her mind on one she really likes... she got one a couple back that was just a box, with a big lid on top. Then she sat the toaster on it... so you had to move the toaster, open the box, take out the bread, get your bread, put it back, put the lid back on, and set the toaster back on top..
I was like nope, not gonna be doing all that. I i got snarky and took my bread out (we each have our preferred loafs) told her "NOT MY BREAD" put it in the panty. Said I refuse to use that bread box as its dumb...
I make a slice of low carb bread toast every morning. That was way too much work to be doing.
She agreed shortly after and brought back the last one we had, thats this one. I like this one. It has that drawer! :)
growing up i had a cat that would knock the bread off the counter so the dog could eat it. they were in cahoots, i swear lol.
that was when we learned that fridge bread is the solution. at first we did cupboard bread, but the whole out of sight out of mind thing tended to cause wasted stale bread.
i thought the same with the more useable space on the end of the bread box with it being put vertically like this - better storage for small items up there, while the bread box takes up less counter space. seemed smart to me!
i've been doing fridge bread ever since i was a kid with that cat and dog in cahoots, and it works great. i find bread stays fresh longer than when it isn't kept in the fridge.
When I was younger, I woke up from an afternoon nap one time and the whole house was angry at me and I had no idea why. Turned out they thought I had eaten all the bagels my sister had bought and they didn't want to believe me that I hadn't even known there were any or that I wasn't even awake when she went shopping.
That is, until someone found the bagel bag in a corner, ripped open and slobbery...
