She's efficient and knows how she wants to maximize counter space. As a homeowner with a tiny kitchen I applaud this setup as it doesn't affect the functionality of the box and helps keep counter space loss to a minimum.

u/Lime_in-the-coconut 4h ago
Yeah, this is a good idea. OPs girlfriend probably finds it mildly infuriating that they can't think outside the (bread) box.

It also has the added bonus that when you open it, there's a chance that the loaf of bread might limply flop out like a dead body.

Out of curiosity OP, why is that a bad thing? You didn't say exactly why this is mildly infuriating to you, so please reply to let us know.
That placement appears to use the available space much more efficiently, including being able to put other items on the top end. Is it bad to store bread vertically, instead of horizontally? That's a real question, because I don't know.

u/49ersBraves 6h ago
I dont have a pantry but I do have dogs that have, in the past, stolen whole loaves of bread from the counter. I don't always have room in the fridge or freezer, so bread and tortillas go in a bread box. One nice thing about the bread box is that you can have stuff on top of it, which you can't do with bread.
I actually like OP's girlfriend's solution because it looks like having it sideways may actually give it more flat surface to use on top.

Bread boxes are nice when you bake your own bread to put whole loafs. Like you kinda "cure" the loaf and after a day it feels more like store bought sandwich bread.
I wouldnt put something in there I wanted to stay crusty. Also. Its nice for when you slice two pieces off a loaf. The other bread in there keeps the sliced end from being overly dried out. Because its sorta like a humidor but for loafs of bread :)→ More replies (10)→ More replies (47)29

Breadbox on the end makes good sense for: 1) space saving, and 2) keeping the bread fresher - if it's not pre-sliced bread it will keep better if you put the sliced end down and only crust exposed, maybe true even if pre-sliced.

As others stated it does take up less space, but if youāre storing a delicate, sliced bread inside like a milk bread or a sliced brioche, storing it vertically will easily collapse the soft interior of the bread and result in more compact slices. Thereās a reason stores stock most breads horizontally.
