My thought too was I hated bread boxes until I saw this photo, thought I was in life hacks not mildly infuriating. Way more space. Bread boxes I don’t even get the purpose of. It’s all of your counter and it’s more space than the bread. I don’t even think it keeps the bread fresh.
That makes sense I also googled it after posting it and they said prior to preservatives in modern times bread would go stale much faster so the air flow was to trap enough moisture to allow it to live a day longer, but not enough trapped moisture to grow mold.
Keeps it from getting smooshed. And if you have a lot of people in the house you can get a few loaves in the big ones. We use ours for various things that usually are mostly not actually loaves of bread. It's like a food junk drawer. Some tortillas in there... Some of those rice paper eggrollish wrapper things that go all clear and rubbery when you use them, snacky cakes, leftover biscuits, and maybe half a loaf of bread because the dog goes after partial loaves. She leaves full ones be for some reason, but half a loaf is not safe left out in the open.
