I have a breadbox like this one, except the handle is a little apple shaped knob. My cat figured out it can open the breadbox and ate an entire loaf of bread one time. I was pissed. How’d they figure that shit out?

Some cats are like little velociraptors in that regard. Clever girls (or boys). Mine is currently working on how to open a round door knob. If they were levered knobs she'd be opening them already.

One of our raptors figured out how to open an ikea cabinet where the doors close flush a few days ago by putting his little toe beans into the crack between the doors and pulling from the side. It's where we keep laundry soaps and cleaning products though, so now it has a chunk of tape across it while we wait for a magnetic latch to get delivered. I caught him trying to pull the tape off last night because he has already figured out that is what's keeping him out. Very clever boy.

Our other 2 will absolutely find and eat/steal bags of bread, so we had to move all of ours to nearly the top shelf of the pantry. It's still not enough sometimes. Smart enough to figure out doors & culinary theft, but somehow all 3 are not smart enough to know eating the plastic the bread comes in is bad for them.

one of mine learned early on how to open the levered doors. I'm currently recouperating from a surgery in our guest room and I didn't bother trying to shut her out because she'd just get in anyway (or wake everyone else up if I locked the door).

So now I pad the surgery site and I get a lap cat for comfort.

My first pair of cats was so smart that they worked cooperatively to open doors. The skinny one would stand on her hind legs and work the doorknob with her front paws, while the fat one repeatedly threw his weight at the door, until they got it just right and POP! the door would open.

Of course only some cats are smart enough to find novel means of mischief. The batch I have now is dumber than a box of hair.

Yeah, my cat clearly understands that he needs to turn the door knob to open it, but his not having thumbs is holding him back. He'll stand up on his back legs and smack the sides of the door knob with his paws. I used to live in a place that had a lever door handle, and he could open that.

I was thinking maybe I should get a breadbox as a better hiding spot, but after hearing that I’ll stick with the cupboard since she hasn’t tried to break in there yet lol

It probably won't take long. We just had to buy child safety locks for our cabinet under the kitchen sink after our little punk figured out how to open it.

I got child safety locks for one of my cabinets, the kind that looks like a latch and you press a button to release it. He just tore the whole thing off. Apparently my cat is stronger than a 3 year old.

That plan was months in the making

Cats make excellent pentesters. They just relentlessly try every combination until one works.

Pets are smart af. I had a dog who after seeing me throw the last piece of meat in the rubbish bin (he stole a bit before that) knew how to operate anything like that. He quite literally walked at the bin, sat infront of it for 2 seconds and pressed it with his paw.

He was 4 months old, was standing around 5 meters away behind me and had never seen a rubbish bin like that open before.

We ended up having to get one that was made of metal and was too heavy for him to open by paw(s) and when he did flip open the lid with his snout it would be heavy enough when it came back down that he didn't do that again.

My eldest recently figured out how to open a LOCKED. DoorKNOB. (NOT HANDLE. KNOB.)

LOCKED.

I used to joke about fearing the day the cats outsmarted us.

We’re already fuckin here.

If you keep it in the Refrigerator then it lasts longer - and most cats haven't figured that door out yet
