humankind hiccups 😅 The way this German bakery writes their S.
Is this a common way to write S for Germans?
UPDATE: I reached out to the bakery, it's in a large US city, it was opened in 2011 and owned by a couple who immigrated from Germany many years ago. The sign was written by one of their workers who is not German, and does their community outreach/participation in Farmer's markets. This was the first time it was brought to their attention. Looks to be innocent, but not well thought out.

Even the cat is like, “Don’t you dare even THINK about hitting THAT upvote!!”
I think this cat knows what is going on and has it all figured out. I’d surely pay an arm and a gonad to listen to this cat’s Ted Talk.

Is this in Germany? Why is the sign written in English?

u/dinoooooooooos Jul 03 '26
Hey so just in case but Germans speak english :D
We also have touristy areas!

u/CannibalFlossing Jul 03 '26
I doubt it is. The sign is in English and the writing on the metal bar beneath is also english
10
u/dinoooooooooos Jul 03 '26
(Once again we start to learn english in 2nd grade. Touristy areas exist.)
15
u/CannibalFlossing Jul 03 '26
I’m aware. Although given English is the only language shown…and there is literally a fitting on the wall engraved with English writing on it…it’s probably safer to assume the bakery is located predominantly English speaking nation first

That style the S is written in resembles the Sowilo rune and was used as a symbol from the Schutzstaffel (SS) which at the beginning were a kind of bodyguards and paramilitary force for the nazis up to being one of the main organs organizing the holocaust

TIL the name of this subreddit is misspelled. I never noticed this for years..... wtf...

u/nocturnal_carnivore Jul 02 '26
there’s another one called r/mildlyinteresting (spelled the right way)

u/Watermelon_Crackers Jul 03 '26
The fact I’m not in both and just realised …. That this one is misspelled and that there are two? My (Reddit) life is a lie.

u/Watermelon_Crackers Jul 03 '26
Edit: what the fuck. There’s also a [r/midlyinteresting](r/midlyinteresting)
Edit: damn, that wasn’t an edit at all. Oops. I’m high, please excuse

u/Deastrumquodvicis Jul 03 '26
Okay but your edit that the first wasn’t an edit made me laugh though. Upvote for that alone.

u/modo_11 Jul 04 '26
Lol, I hadn't noticed either.
Now I think their should be a third (or more apt misspelling of this one) to midlyinteresting, as in mid-ly. Posts should be only a little more interesting there...

It’s because r/mildlyinteresting is BS. I’ve tried posting there many times and they always get removed by mods, because they break the rules that are pedantically and arbitrarily enforced; Or it’s “not interesting” or “too interesting”. 🙄

On one hand, all of their letters have flat edges, even the O.
However, wouldn't it have been more in-style to have a squared S and not the Sig rune?
12
u/Summer_Is_Safe_ Jul 03 '26
What about the b’s and r’s? Seems purposely selective.
7
u/MonstersAtOurDoor Jul 03 '26
The B's are squared off (pointed, not round). The R is rounder, yeah.
36
u/real-crackheadhours Jul 02 '26
Definitely a dogwhistle
3
u/smircat Jul 04 '26
even their reply doesn’t hold water for me if the sign is not updated expeditiously.
plenty of people choose to use dog whistles because they can take advantage of plausible deniability. pretend it’s a price change and tape a correction over it, now guys.

So its not a German bakery but an US bakery.

u/RebaKitt3n Jul 02 '26
I’m guessing it’s a bakery in the US that serves German baked goods. What would be called a German bakery.

Yeah, I'm suspicious. I would want them to explain that. Are they mimicking the Nazi SS?
If so, they can fuck right off.

There was a rock panel show on Youtube and a guy had a KISS poster but something didn't seem right. I found out later that he had a German KISS poster and the SS were different.

My stepmom always used the Slayer ‘s’ when writing on our Christmas presents. It’s similar to this.. but this definitely seems a little too intentional for them to just have a good taste in music

u/ByronsLastStand Jul 03 '26
I'm imagining this is a German-style bakery in the US, perhaps? If you did this in Germany there would be trouble

In my own defense and partially theirs, when I use a chisel tip marker to write, those curved letters don't always come out curvy, or they look REAL bulky, so the S's and other letters get a lot more angular. No other reason behind it besides working around a chisel tip marker lol. That's just me though 😅
