You got another 40 growing days to go for a carrot.

u/mike_pants Sep 13 '26
Root veg was probably too ambitious for a patio planter. I've moved on to lettuce.
Tomatoes are going gangbusters, though.

u/grapefruitfuntimes Sep 13 '26
You can totally do it as long as you have 8-12 inches of depth. It looks like you just pulled the carrots out too soon. The greens themselves are not at the maturity frond stage for the carrots. If you’d like you can try a carrot that’s more short in length. Like Bolero.

u/mike_pants Sep 13 '26
Believe you me, this was pulled too late if anything. Whatever they needed, they weren't getting it.

u/grapefruitfuntimes Sep 13 '26
I work in the agricultural industry so from what I see the fronds are too small to be mature. It could also be that thinning didn’t occur? Another commentor mentioned add fertilizer. A high phosphorus fertilizer helps.

u/mike_pants Sep 13 '26
I don't think it takes a very discerning eye to make the assessment that this carrot is a smidge immature.
Problem is, more time in the dirt was not going to solve this issue. That's as big as it was gonna get.

Appreciate you sharing, what’s your balcony pots look like? Are they the smaller ones?

Very cute, like a courtyard garden. We’re the carrots in that oval planter?

u/going_mad Sep 13 '26
I planted them in a 2ft depth box...nothing except flowers and seeds and no actual carrots. Seeds spread to crushed rock base where the box sits on and now i have 4" carrots randomly growing in the gravel...fml

u/Nazgog-Morgob Sep 14 '26
No, you planted too late. I had the same thing happen in a raised garden... Cuz I planted them too late in the seasom

u/mike_pants Sep 14 '26
I can promise you with 100% confidence that they were not planted too late.

That's too much sell it and make a fortune
12
u/Sea_Prep_Tidal_26 Sep 13 '26
Are you suggesting dumping this on the carrot market ?! You do realize the economic impact this will have on the local farmers, right ?
3
u/DaZzDiNg0o Sep 13 '26
Yep i know the impact.. but he can't eat that much alone.. or maybe make feast for whole village or town he lives in..

This reminds me of that one Loony Tunes or Mickey Mouse cartoon where Bugs/Mickey is slicing something paper thin and giving it to Donald/Daffy duck.

Listen, it's not the size of the carrot but what you do with it.
It could be the nose of an ice cream snowman?

If you grow again, lots of fine, loamy soil and compost/ fertilizer
Look up beneficial nematodes. It will stop the carrots from twisting with multiple legs.
2
u/ferncabbage Sep 13 '26
Did you pull them too soon? Or plant them too late?
3
u/mike_pants Sep 13 '26
I think I planted them too early and they got stunted from the cold nights. I planted them in May and pulled them yesterday.
Zucchinis got messed up, too. Flower after flower after flower, but only two vegetables.

Did you fork over the soil before planting? I know carrots require quite loose soil to really grow well. If the soil is really dense they'll usually stay small like this.

@op carrots are roots. If you water too much, the root doesnt haven't to grow down and big for resources. Less water is youe friend

It’s not the size that matters; it’s how you USE it. It’s perfect for a family of… ants. 🐜
