I am German and it's disgusting. I would never eat raw meat. But most of the people I know loving it.

Volksabstimmung ĂŒber AusbĂŒrgerung wann?

1

u/mat_patfan 5h ago

Ja das frage ich mich auch

8

u/Nopfen 7h ago

That sounds suspicious. A german who doesn't eat Mett, and a guy claiming to roll the dicr twice, who hasn't rolled the dice once on Mett.

4

u/down_with_opp_42 7h ago

r/rolln_the_dice_twice ist wohl kein Alman

1

u/Fine-Side-739 3h ago

TĂŒrke detected.

1

u/down_with_opp_42 3h ago

Detektoren dringend kalibrieren. Aber ich nehm's als Kompliment.

2

u/Fine-Side-739 3h ago

Muss ich wohl noch was dran rumschrauben.

1

u/nerokae1001 7h ago

Tbh most people that I know like it be it german or not. Only those from religion which forbids pork meat or vegetarian feel disgusted by it.

I am naturalized german and I love Mettbrötchen.

2

u/ysn80 6h ago

I have seen Zwiebelmettwurst made of Beef and made of poultry. There goes religion of being a blocker

1

u/SciLib0815 5h ago

Mettwurst is an entirely different thing than Mett. It's smoked and cured, so not actually raw like Mett.

1

u/xFirnen 5h ago

Mett is also a bit regional. You can get it everywhere, but it is definitely much more of a thing in the northern/western half of the country. I grew up in the south east and it was never particularly popular here.

1

u/ginandtonicsdemonic 5h ago

I don't eat pork, but replace the pork with beef, bison, goat etc and its delicious.

It's nostalgic to me as when I was a kid we would always munch on some raw meat when the lambs were slaughtered. My dad used to eat sliced raw liver while it was still warm

0

u/Fellkartoffel 4h ago

I am German, I barely eat any meat, and dislike pork unless it's bacon or a sausage. But damn, a Mettbrötchen is a good thing evey now and then. With so much onions your sweat stinks for days.

u/Upbeat-Mail7201 7h ago

Am besten schmeckts mit rohem ei

4

u/actualhumannotspider 6h ago

Salmonella and trichinosis cancel each other out.

1

u/RijnBrugge 5h ago

Trichinosis is not a concern when eating Mett.

1

u/Wentil 5h ago

Why? đŸ€”

2

u/sltiefighter 5h ago

Cos trich hasnt been in pork for fucking decades on decades thats some bible shit. Im not saying eat raw pork, but its safe to eat pork at 140 which is lower than chicken. I think pork at 140 is gross and i dont like the texture i like it more cooked. But eating fresh just ground pork or beef for the intention of it being consumed raw is fine, dont just go buy any pork or beef now. Find a source who is doing it for the intended purpose.

1

u/chasetheusername 4h ago

Why? đŸ€”

Every pig that's butchered in Germany is checked for it.

Additionally the processing, sales and storage rules are very strict, esp. when it concerns raw minced meats.

1

u/NonSumQualisEram- 4h ago

Same reason salmonella isn't a concern with raw eggs. Food safety standards.

1

u/Upbeat-Mail7201 3h ago

Salmonella is basically non existent here, but tbh I never ate an egg from a supermarket so I can't say, but I ate hundreds or thousands of raw, cooked, baked whatever eggs fresh from the chickens 😋

1

u/EuropeSusan 3h ago

Because every pork gets checked for it.

Salmonella might appear from time to time if raw eggs were too old. there are about one case every two years or something like that.

1

u/Key_Fee158 4h ago

Modern pork is definitely safe to eat medium at least. Fine dining restaurants are supposed to serve it medium because that’s where it tastes its best.

Medium rare pork is generally not served mostly because the texture is disgusting.

1

u/Swellmeister 3h ago

There hasn't been a documented farm-caused case of trichinosis in years. Thats one of the few good things of factory pork. You are unlikely to find a pig who had encountered a soil living parasite. Plus they do a lot of testing and all that.

Its basically safe in the US amd Europe to eat raw pork.

1

u/NotBreadyy 6h ago

Fuck no 😭

1

u/Busy_Difference_4503 6h ago

Du meinst Tartar? Mett muss mit Zwiebeln!

1

u/Sharkathotep 5h ago

đŸ€ź

3

u/front-wipers-unite 6h ago

I tried it when I lived in Germany. I throughly enjoyed it.

1

u/FUEL_SSBM 6h ago

I have discussed with the council and we have come to a decision that you may claim the passport of the person that you have replied to. In order to do so, just notify the city bureau of the city you last stayed at in Germany via fax.

1

u/german-wmn 6h ago

Sounds reasonable.

And also need to wait 30 business days to actually send the fax

1

u/grandioseOwl 5h ago

I would have said that's fake, but the fax made it sound plausible

1

Sending a floppy disk via pigeon is the only other way to do it iirc

If he does do that, for security reasons he will have to confirm his identity using the AusweisApp, however!

1

Das ist so deutsch. Danke

3

u/checkikul 6h ago

I’m not German , but I like it, it’s like German sushi 🍣

11

u/el_bentse 6h ago

I'm German and have never even tried it, kinda disgusting. Dibs sushi in soy sauce

2

u/Bier-Senf-Mische 6h ago

I'm German and I eat Mett all the time. Its kinda a tradition but also really fucking tasty. Also you can get it anywhere but fresh from the fleischtheke is the best

2

u/sharpshooter999 5h ago

Nebraskan here. Most of the people in my area have German ancestry. I remember my grandparents (born in the 1920's) eating it though it was usually more of a special occasion type dish like when having guests over. I remember them sitting around a table with their friends, playing cards, smoking, drinking Schlitz and snacking on Mett the whole evening. They used beef and pickled onions though. A lot of the small town grocery stores used to make it on the spot if you wanted some.

Now that their generation is mostly gone, no one really eats it anymore

1

u/Kobi1610 5h ago

You should try it. Mett and baked potatoes especially out of a wooden fire with some salt and butter. Thank me later

1

u/forwheniampresident 2h ago

Yeah making it with pork requires very strict precautions in the entire process that you simply don’t find outside of Germany. Otherwise raw pork can be quite the health hazard.

1

u/CoconutRepulsive753 54m ago

I get it for 1,50 from the local supermarket

1

u/OlsoRen 5h ago

I used to work as AU Pair back in 2011 in Germany, it was cool to taste it, but people are usually so scared about raw pork, while veel tartar or sushi seem ok to them)

1

u/Ryoubi_Wuver 5h ago

The what now??

1

u/MillyQ3 4h ago

Fleischtheke, it's where you buy fresh meat in the super market.

1

u/sulyen22 3h ago

Fleischtheke like Apotheke, this is so funny. So in supermarket is it fleischtheke but in separate shop is it still Fleischerei?

1

u/MillyQ3 3h ago

A bit like that yeah, but a Fleischerei has a Theke or Ladentheke (store-theke) inside so calling the Theke in the Fleischerei Fleischtheke is redundant. (At a super market can be more than one type, Fleischtheke, KĂ€setheke (cheese), Backtheke (bakery) etc.

The word is a loanword from Greek but in German it is a table for displaying and selling things from.

1

u/Lower_Cockroach2432 6h ago

Shushi grade fish is usually flash frozen to deal with parasites. Does the same thing really work with pork?

Trichinella is not something to mess with.

1

u/Ok-Limit-7173 6h ago

I don't know to be honest but I've never heard any stories of people getting sick because of mett (or beef tatar, which is essentially the same concept) but you do hear of the occasional guy who ate bad fish.

1

u/Lower_Cockroach2432 5h ago

I see the general principle, and sure it's probably an artefact of how clean you can get artisanal pork in Germany (would you make mett with Aldi cuts?), but beef is undeniably a lot cleaner than pork unless the cows have been stored in truly atrocious conditions. Generally searing the outside is enough to kill parasites as they tend to not live inside the muscle.

I thought pork parasites were generally more aggessive than beef ones.

1

u/Delphin_1 5h ago

You don't make mett. You only buy it. The cuts they use are a lot more regulated then the normal pork you buy and cook.

1

u/Ok-Limit-7173 4h ago

You could use normal ground pork tho, couldn't you?

1

u/Inevitable_Stand_199 3h ago

You really shouldn't

1

u/Periador 1h ago

yes, thats what is used for it

1

u/RijnBrugge 5h ago

Every single pork slaughtered in Germany must be certified to be trichinae-free.

1

u/Ok-Limit-7173 4h ago

I don't know to be honest. I've never really thought about pork or beef being dangerous when raw.

I learnd to wash everything raw chicken touches thoroughly tho.

1

u/Periador 1h ago

mett is sold at aldi, nothing about it is "artisanal pork". Its just pork

1

u/kjjustinXD 5h ago

Every single Pig gets checked for them before the meat gets used.

1

u/Tilistime 5h ago

the meat is getting tested and if you really want to eat mett it has to be processeed on the same day, so it is as good and fresh as it gets. personally i have never seen or heard from someone that had an issue with mett

1

u/mafugga77 5h ago

No such thing as “sushi grade fish”. Just a bs sales term. Nobody regulates the safe consumption of sushi vs non-sushi fish.

1

u/ConfectionIll4301 5h ago

The pork is heavily controlled to make sure there is no parasite infestation. Hence i wouldnt try or in every country. German law consideres pork eaten raw because of Mett.

1

u/Narrow_Dragonfruit71 5h ago

In Germany it is mandatory to test every pig fĂŒr Trichinella. Even hunters are obligated to test the hunted omnivores, wild boar and badger for Exemplar. Therefor it is save to eat fresh (max 24h old since butchering), raw port in Germany.

1

u/DonQuix0te_ 4h ago

In germany, Pork is actually checked for parasites to ensure that this does not happen.
Other types of meat are not checked as intensely.

This is also why you should not eat raw pork outside of germany, and even in Germany, you should only eat it when it is sold as Mett. (Or, better yet, don't eat the disgusting meat paste. I am german and have never tried it.)

1

u/Angry__German 3h ago

German food safety is pretty decent, unless you buy your Mett at a butcher you can be certain the meat is ok.

All the meat gets screened very thoroughly for all kinds of diseases and parasites.

It is so good that there are about 10 cases of trichinella infection in Germany in a year and most of them are "imported" meaning the parasites got ingested outside of Germany.

The other "big" source of infection is consumption of unscreened meat, for example from private hunters or smuggled meat.

Infection from Mett is totally unheard of, if there are cases of sickness after consumption that would be when the product was not handled correctly, for example not stored properly or too long and most of the time it is consumer error if that happens.

1

u/fraterperturabo 5h ago

i am an auslÀnder and its awesome eating mett (hackpeter)

1

u/NGO_Aktivist 4h ago

Deutsches Sushi beste

1

u/OtherwiseAct8126 3h ago

Sushi is different because it has been snapfrozen. Sushi from fresh fish is pretty rare in some cities close to the ocean but certainly not in Germany.

2

u/Impossible_Nail_2031 7h ago

Don't know what you are but you're not german

I don't even like raw onions 😂

1

u/DeepMenlyVoice 6h ago

Nope Not a German 😂

1

u/Tobitobman 6h ago

Yeah, bullshit.

1

u/kinda_alone 6h ago

It’s solid. Much better than I was expecting

1

u/Bub_bele 6h ago

hm claiming to be german but not liking mett
suspicious

1

u/FunnyGuyNoKapp 6h ago

Something tells me you are not that German you know

1

u/Tybalto 6h ago

LĂŒgner.

1

u/WolfsmaulVibes 6h ago

i prefer baking it onto the bread bun first

1

u/Gefahrendaniel 6h ago

It's not disgusting, it's awesome.

1

u/gabimaru89 6h ago

I'm German and it's delicious

1

u/MSobolev777 6h ago

Mett is just there for texture tbh. If you apply a thin layer of it, like butter and add salt-pepper and onion rings- it's actually really good

1

u/A_Finite_Element 6h ago

Swede here, had it in Germany. Like it. Now let me tell you about our fermented fish to steal the show.

1

u/KOMarcus 6h ago

It's delicious. I love it.

1

u/DarkImpacT213 6h ago

It's also not very common in the south, so fairly regional. You'll mainly encounter Mett in the Rhineland and the Ruhr valley.

1

u/VariousWar2922 6h ago

HĂ€h? Not true. Northern Germany loves it

1

u/Entire-Flower423 6h ago

SĂŒddeutschland auch.

1

u/mat_patfan 5h ago

Nicht wirklich regional habe das schon ĂŒberall im Laden gesehen und auch ĂŒberall gesehen wie Leute das Essen

1

u/Staublaeufer 6h ago

I absolutely love me some good quality Mett with onions

1

u/grumpy__g 6h ago

Thought the same till I tried it for the first time. The thought of it being raw is disgusting but soon you realise that it still tastes good.

1

u/_kastenfrosch_ 6h ago

I'm a German too and love to eat it. Best on a fresh bread roll with Butter, freshly cuted onions and Salt & Pepper, kinda like to Picture above but with more Volumen.

1

u/Badshah619 6h ago

That's the most alman comment I have ever read

1

u/Ulgoroth 5h ago

Never had this, but tatar steak on fried bread with garlic us heavenly!

1

u/MangoNo1141 5h ago

It's not disgusting. For you personally maybe.

1

u/bushhooker 5h ago

I’m American, currently living with yall in DE. The first company I worked at here celebrated Mettwoch every Wednesday. The hallways stunk of freshly cut raw onions and spiced meat which wouldn’t normally be an issue if it wasn’t 9 AM

1

u/Any-Comparison-2916 5h ago

I am german and most of the people I know love it. Great with onions and black pepper.

1

u/1rg3ndw3r 5h ago

Durch diesen Text hast du die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit verloren.

1

u/RandomUsername78421 5h ago

I steak tartare and it was good. I've had raw horse before in Japan and it was pretty good. I'd assume most people's revulsion to raw pork is concern about parasites but there obviously must be a way to prepare this safely or it wouldn't be a thing.

1

u/Hanza-Malz 5h ago

There's two types of people.

People that love Mett and those that have never eaten it.

1

u/Salty-Register-9487 5h ago

Lmao your countrymen excommunicated you over this

1

u/Efficient-Title-8719 5h ago

As a Pole i know you guys like it from the oven ;)

1

u/theflowerman5972 5h ago

As an American, I liked it. I visited my friend that lives in Bremen in August and he insisted I had to try it. I would totally eat it again😋

1

u/Vulturris 5h ago

DU BIST HIERMIT VERBANNT AUS DEM REICHE BRD!

1

u/Th3_Accountant 4h ago

I’m dutch, I never heard of raw pork but I do love tartaar (raw beef).

1

u/dumplingBoi9 4h ago

I am German and it's amazing

1

u/KindlyDesigner9810 4h ago

If the pork is from a local slaughter, its totally fine. but discusting is it defently from Aldi or Lidl or other big companys.

1

u/-riGGu- 4h ago

Schmeckt mega

1

u/KapitaenHowdy 4h ago

Jede nach seinem Geschmack. Ich könnt allein davon leben.

1

u/Independent_Eye7886 4h ago

I am German and I have tried it, my co-workers offer this several times every year.
And the meat basically has no taste to mention, it is very mild on it's own, that is why everyone puts onions on it, plus salt and/or pepper.
After realizing that I gave up on Mett entirely, I prefer my rolls with some cheese.

Har, "rolls", als ob es ĂŒberhaupt ein ordentliches Wort fĂŒr Brötchen geben wĂŒrde...

1

u/vadeka 4h ago

Belgian here, we will take your portion gladly

1

u/DerrellEsteva 4h ago

I'm German and let me tell ya, it's actually quite good.

1

u/alderhill 4h ago

I don’t like it either, but not because it’s raw meat. I just find the texture gross. Imagine a mushy, gummy, smeary meat paste. Room temp or cool. Blech. It doesn’t have much flavour on its own, just mildly meaty. The salt and pepper or onions carry the flavour, really.

It’s one of those things that is very very overrated, but iT’s RaW mEaT, so seems hardcore or whatever. Honestly it’s not great unless you like meat and raw onions with the texture of muffin dough.

1

u/SunNo1920 4h ago

So ein Quatsch Mett ist absolut köstlich!

1

u/yami_no_ko 3h ago

By today it is indeed disgusting. It's quite a few years since I've had my last Mettbrötchen. But in this day and age I wouldn't eat any of it. We used to have laws and regulations regarding food, but given how they’re basically ignored and barely enforced anymore, you are playing Russian roulette with your health.

1

u/Max_Winters02 3h ago

I used to live in Germany for 6 years and I tried it a few times never really liked it but my German ex wife loved it. Now my 8 year old loves it too 😂

1

u/best4444 3h ago

Try mettigel đŸ€Ł

I am also German and this is super lecker.

1

1

I'm an American immigrant to Germany. Mett is delicious, and a regular Sunday treat in my household.

1

u/monodefense 2h ago edited 39m ago

I am German too and I love it. It's not something I have ever bought myself but it is (was?) the typical food you prepare for people that help you move. I might have had Mettbröttchen like 10-15 times in my life, ever single time was when I had helped somebody move to a new apartment/house (mostly family, sometimes friends).

1

u/28TheOneAndOnly 2h ago

Shame on you, Mett is life xD

1

u/timewillt 5m ago

Ohne es zu versuchen kannst du nicht sagen, dass es widerlich ist. Macht 0 Sinn!

1

u/SomeOnionHater 7h ago

Then you're not German.

0

u/Touristenopfer 6h ago

Only valid if vegetarian or vegan. If not, please go to the next office of the Verfassungsschutz and let them listen to you saying the following sentence three times in a row, towaritzsch:

FĂŒnfhundertfĂŒnfundfĂŒnzig Eichhörchen nĂ€chtigen in StreichholzschĂ€chtelchen.

1

u/thundergu 6h ago

Nah, no vega crap for me
