Mett is also a bit regional. You can get it everywhere, but it is definitely much more of a thing in the northern/western half of the country. I grew up in the south east and it was never particularly popular here.
I don't eat pork, but replace the pork with beef, bison, goat etc and its delicious.
It's nostalgic to me as when I was a kid we would always munch on some raw meat when the lambs were slaughtered. My dad used to eat sliced raw liver while it was still warm
I am German, I barely eat any meat, and dislike pork unless it's bacon or a sausage. But damn, a Mettbrötchen is a good thing evey now and then. With so much onions your sweat stinks for days.
Cos trich hasnt been in pork for fucking decades on decades thats some bible shit. Im not saying eat raw pork, but its safe to eat pork at 140 which is lower than chicken. I think pork at 140 is gross and i dont like the texture i like it more cooked. But eating fresh just ground pork or beef for the intention of it being consumed raw is fine, dont just go buy any pork or beef now. Find a source who is doing it for the intended purpose.
Salmonella is basically non existent here, but tbh I never ate an egg from a supermarket so I can't say, but I ate hundreds or thousands of raw, cooked, baked whatever eggs fresh from the chickens đ
Modern pork is definitely safe to eat medium at least. Fine dining restaurants are supposed to serve it medium because thatâs where it tastes its best.
Medium rare pork is generally not served mostly because the texture is disgusting.
There hasn't been a documented farm-caused case of trichinosis in years. Thats one of the few good things of factory pork. You are unlikely to find a pig who had encountered a soil living parasite. Plus they do a lot of testing and all that.
Its basically safe in the US amd Europe to eat raw pork.
I have discussed with the council and we have come to a decision that you may claim the passport of the person that you have replied to. In order to do so, just notify the city bureau of the city you last stayed at in Germany via fax.
I'm German and I eat Mett all the time. Its kinda a tradition but also really fucking tasty. Also you can get it anywhere but fresh from the fleischtheke is the best
Nebraskan here. Most of the people in my area have German ancestry. I remember my grandparents (born in the 1920's) eating it though it was usually more of a special occasion type dish like when having guests over. I remember them sitting around a table with their friends, playing cards, smoking, drinking Schlitz and snacking on Mett the whole evening. They used beef and pickled onions though. A lot of the small town grocery stores used to make it on the spot if you wanted some.
Now that their generation is mostly gone, no one really eats it anymore
Yeah making it with pork requires very strict precautions in the entire process that you simply donât find outside of Germany. Otherwise raw pork can be quite the health hazard.
I used to work as AU Pair back in 2011 in Germany, it was cool to taste it, but people are usually so scared about raw pork, while veel tartar or sushi seem ok to them)
A bit like that yeah, but a Fleischerei has a Theke or Ladentheke (store-theke) inside so calling the Theke in the Fleischerei Fleischtheke is redundant. (At a super market can be more than one type, Fleischtheke, KĂ€setheke (cheese), Backtheke (bakery) etc.
The word is a loanword from Greek but in German it is a table for displaying and selling things from.
I don't know to be honest but I've never heard any stories of people getting sick because of mett (or beef tatar, which is essentially the same concept) but you do hear of the occasional guy who ate bad fish.
I see the general principle, and sure it's probably an artefact of how clean you can get artisanal pork in Germany (would you make mett with Aldi cuts?), but beef is undeniably a lot cleaner than pork unless the cows have been stored in truly atrocious conditions. Generally searing the outside is enough to kill parasites as they tend to not live inside the muscle.
I thought pork parasites were generally more aggessive than beef ones.
the meat is getting tested and if you really want to eat mett it has to be processeed on the same day, so it is as good and fresh as it gets. personally i have never seen or heard from someone that had an issue with mett
The pork is heavily controlled to make sure there is no parasite infestation. Hence i wouldnt try or in every country. German law consideres pork eaten raw because of Mett.
In Germany it is mandatory to test every pig fĂŒr Trichinella. Even hunters are obligated to test the hunted omnivores, wild boar and badger for Exemplar. Therefor it is save to eat fresh (max 24h old since butchering), raw port in Germany.
In germany, Pork is actually checked for parasites to ensure that this does not happen.
Other types of meat are not checked as intensely.
This is also why you should not eat raw pork outside of germany, and even in Germany, you should only eat it when it is sold as Mett. (Or, better yet, don't eat the disgusting meat paste. I am german and have never tried it.)
German food safety is pretty decent, unless you buy your Mett at a butcher you can be certain the meat is ok.
All the meat gets screened very thoroughly for all kinds of diseases and parasites.
It is so good that there are about 10 cases of trichinella infection in Germany in a year and most of them are "imported" meaning the parasites got ingested outside of Germany.
The other "big" source of infection is consumption of unscreened meat, for example from private hunters or smuggled meat.
Infection from Mett is totally unheard of, if there are cases of sickness after consumption that would be when the product was not handled correctly, for example not stored properly or too long and most of the time it is consumer error if that happens.
Sushi is different because it has been snapfrozen. Sushi from fresh fish is pretty rare in some cities close to the ocean but certainly not in Germany.
I'm a German too and love to eat it. Best on a fresh bread roll with Butter, freshly cuted onions and Salt & Pepper, kinda like to Picture above but with more Volumen.
Iâm American, currently living with yall in DE. The first company I worked at here celebrated Mettwoch every Wednesday. The hallways stunk of freshly cut raw onions and spiced meat which wouldnât normally be an issue if it wasnât 9 AM
I steak tartare and it was good. I've had raw horse before in Japan and it was pretty good. I'd assume most people's revulsion to raw pork is concern about parasites but there obviously must be a way to prepare this safely or it wouldn't be a thing.
I am German and I have tried it, my co-workers offer this several times every year.
And the meat basically has no taste to mention, it is very mild on it's own, that is why everyone puts onions on it, plus salt and/or pepper.
After realizing that I gave up on Mett entirely, I prefer my rolls with some cheese.
Har, "rolls", als ob es ĂŒberhaupt ein ordentliches Wort fĂŒr Brötchen geben wĂŒrde...
I donât like it either, but not because itâs raw meat. I just find the texture gross. Imagine a mushy, gummy, smeary meat paste. Room temp or cool. Blech. It doesnât have much flavour on its own, just mildly meaty. The salt and pepper or onions carry the flavour, really.
Itâs one of those things that is very very overrated, but iTâs RaW mEaT, so seems hardcore or whatever. Honestly itâs not great unless you like meat and raw onions with the texture of muffin dough.Â
By today it is indeed disgusting. It's quite a few years since I've had my last Mettbrötchen. But in this day and age I wouldn't eat any of it. We used to have laws and regulations regarding food, but given how theyâre basically ignored and barely enforced anymore, you are playing Russian roulette with your health.
I used to live in Germany for 6 years and I tried it a few times never really liked it but my German ex wife loved it. Now my 8 year old loves it too đ
I am German too and I love it. It's not something I have ever bought myself but it is (was?) the typical food you prepare for people that help you move. I might have had Mettbröttchen like 10-15 times in my life, ever single time was when I had helped somebody move to a new apartment/house (mostly family, sometimes friends).
Only valid if vegetarian or vegan. If not, please go to the next office of the Verfassungsschutz and let them listen to you saying the following sentence three times in a row, towaritzsch:
FĂŒnfhundertfĂŒnfundfĂŒnzig Eichhörchen nĂ€chtigen in StreichholzschĂ€chtelchen.

I am German and it's disgusting. I would never eat raw meat. But most of the people I know loving it.
