Discussion 💬 Quick question
I’m new here. Since when did Burmese people start using English on here 😆? This is actually pretty cool. I've been using tt for 6yrs. Honestly, this place is way better than tt.

Whataboutism is when someone avoids answering criticism by bringing up a different issue or pointing out someone else's wrongdoing instead.
Basically, instead of addressing the problem, they say, “What about this other thing?”
I see this in most arguments nowadays. Like when other people spoke out about how women face sexual harassment, and society often blames them for what they wear. They will say "what about men who get falsely accused of sexual harassment?".Yes, there may be such cases. But they bring this up not to solve this, they use this as a reason to neglect the victim blaming towards women.

I saw a comment under my post about whataboutism that made me think about how deeply patriarchy is embedded in our society.
My post has nothing to do with hating men. Whataboutism can be used by both men and women. There is no gender role for using this.
The commenter basically mocked women for discussing sexism, saying that these supposedly “intelligent” Myanmar women will eventually marry men they criticize, give birth to their children, and become housewives anyway. They also mocked women for using “fancy foreign words” online.
Why is a woman's opinion about sexism suddenly less valid just because she might eventually get married or have children? And even if a woman chooses to become a housewife, that doesn't mean she deserves less respect or should have fewer rights.
I think this reflects how deeply traditional gender roles are ingrained in our society. Women are expected to become wives and mothers, while speaking against the system that reinforces these expectations gets treated as a joke.
But patriarchy doesn't benefit men as much as some people think, either.
Men are also expected to be providers, to suppress their emotions, to always appear strong, and to prove their masculinity. Men who don't fit these expectations can be mocked for being weak, feminine, or not being “real men.” They're often discouraged from expressing vulnerability or seeking emotional support because society teaches them that these things make them less masculine.
Of course, men and women don't necessarily experience these expectations in the same way, and women have historically faced significant disadvantages under patriarchal systems. But acknowledging that patriarchy harms men doesn't take away from the problems women face. Both can be true at the same time.
And that's why I think we should be questioning these expectations instead of defending them simply because they're traditional.
Feminism isn't about making women superior to men. It's about challenging a system that assigns people roles, expectations, and limitations based on their gender.
Women should be able to speak about sexism without being ridiculed, and men should be able to live without having their masculinity constantly questioned.
Neither women nor men should have to spend their lives proving that they're good enough according to society's expectations of their gender.

Beijing and New Delhi are understandably frustrated about Washington’s secret meeting with the junta. But honestly, the real story isn’t even about the U.S.
It’s Tokyo.
This isn’t a coincidence. Japan has been quietly working on diplomacy in Myanmar for years through things like ODA and people like Sasakawa. While Western companies pulled out after the coup, 300 Japanese businesses stuck around.
China might have the muscle on the ground, but they’re dealing with a big trust issue in Myanmar. Japan has something that China can’t just buy – soft power and trust in the region.
The U.S. and Japan are clearly using Tokyo as a neutral ground to push back against China.
But the real test isn’t about cornering the junta. It’s whether Tokyo can convince Beijing that having a stable and neutral Myanmar actually benefits them too.
What's your take?

Like poetry, music, literature, conversations, movies, etc. I am a language learner and Burmese interests me so I was curious what would be some great ways to make use of the language in terms of experiencing the culture in a way you only can if you know the language.

Hey it's me again. I asked about G-12 stuffs a few months prior but now 7 months into the journey, political changes have me rethinking about what to do. As you guys know, High school students and university students were exception to the စစ်မှုထမ်း but now only highschool students are exception to the စစ်မှုထမ်း (not to ပေါ်တာ). uni students on the other hand are no longer an exception to စစ်မှုထမ်း. They said students have to serve the country for 2 years then come back to uni after that. Well idk if they actually announced it officially. My previous plan was to finish G-12 with good marks, try to be qualified for MMU and get a degree in something which I can use to work on ships as engineer or other stuffs (သင်္ဘော မှာစက်၊အင်ဂျင်ပိုင်းဖြစ်ဖြစ်ပေါ့ကွာ). Plan B was something IT related. But now things are changing so I have to rethink about all. Is it actually the time to consider studying abroad and working there? If studying abroad is possible, what should I do? Which foreign universities are easy to apply for? Can you apply for foreign universities with G-12 Completion certificate and အမှတ်စာရင်း ? I'm quite interested in studying physics and mathematics related subjects. I think I'd be okay with engineering subjects.
I have around 4 months till the ACTUAL G-12 FINAL. And 9-10 months till အောင်စာရင်း. I'm not sure what to do but for now I'll try to get good marks in G-12 final. Then based on you guys' suggestion and idea I'll rethink about what to do. Also what's the minimum cost or average cost of attending a university in a foreign nation ( everything included from taking classes before going to uni fees)
Sorry for my English. And I will be offline for a few days as I have an exam ongoing. I'll make sure to read all comments thoroughly when I'm online again. Some of the questions I've asked above might be some dumb question but please don't mind 🙏🏻.
Take Care!

I'm another Burmese 20-something living abroad having a quarter life crisis ... I was recently chatting with high school friends about whether we would ever get to go back home. Like many Burmese youth, a lot of my friends are scattered in different countries across Asia, Europe, and N.America. Some friends have gotten married and held weddings abroad with no family present. A friend just recently had a baby.
I left in 2021. 6 years away and I can tell how much my parents have aged. Homesickness has come and gone in phases and show up in different ways. It's no longer that pressing feeling but rather become a lingering background emotion that kind of affects everything I do ...
Ever since I left, my dream has been to go back and help my country in some way, shape or form. I now have the degree I left home for, and I still don't know how I can make that happen. Am I dumb for remaining hopeful about going back in the near future? This seems dumb when people my age in the country are trying to leave.
Our elders who left Myanmar in the 60's or 80's .. I wonder if they also had dreams of going back that were never realized.
I guess I kind of needed to shout into the reddit void and hoping something comes out of this.

I’ve been saving money to move abroad next year. My current plan is to live in Thailand for one year, then move to a better country when my finances are good enough. I’m a YouTuber earning around $3,000 per month, depending on views. I’ll continue doing YouTube wherever I move since I don’t have another career. I’ve considered Dubai because of its tax benefits, but the living costs are high and I’m not sure if my budget is enough for the visa. I’ve never been abroad before. Which country would be best for me?

Edit: It is the highest peak in Kayin State, near Hpa-an city. A limestone mountain about 2734 feet (722 metres).
Could not experience sunrise unfortunately. It’s a good cardio for everyone and the view is definitely worth it. I cant believe some professionals complete the entire trail of ascent and descent in less than an hour. There are also friendly dogs along the trails that follow you from bottom to top.
