Hey everyone, I thought it would be a good time to share this seeing as how Mark MacDonald is running for public office again.
I first met Mark through some friends I made at elementary school: their parents were from the same country as my parents and before long, we were dragged into Christianity by this family and doing bible studies at Mark's house.
I'm not going to get into my personal faith here, but let's just say we come from one of those "godless atheist countries" that missionaries go to and try and convert people all the time.
I was a child and obviously hung out with his children around my age during these bible study sessions. Whenever I would try to connect with them about something I liked, I was told that they weren't allowed to watch the TV shows that I watched and that I was bad for watching them because the devil was inside Pokémon/Sailor Moon. I didn't really understand it at the time—all I knew is that I was made to feel a lot of shame over a perfectly normal TV show geared towards kids. And frankly, it felt like I lived in an alternate reality where Halloween was not a fun holiday to dress up and get free candy, but instead a weird battle for my soul that I didn't even really believe in.
His kids are homeschooled of course, or were until the Christian school was built in the mid-00s. Keep in mind his youngest is late 20s/early 30.
Looking back on it, I feel like my story has a lot of similarities with many people who have grown up inside Christian fundamentalist communities or homes.
I distinctively recall a time where child-me proudly boasted about fibbing to get my parents to buy me a rare McDonald's treat (looking back on it, my parents definitely knew but indulged me anyway) and one of Mark's kids said to me, "you didn't lie did you? GOD DOESN'T LIKE LIARS."
I firmly believe that this is a form of in-group terror and shame that no child should have to face, especially one so unfamiliar with everything in this country.
As per his linkedin, Mark graduated from an American non-profit college (United States International University), but what's interesting is that he also attended Christ for the Nations Institute in Dallas, TX in 1989 (not on his LinkedIn but in his personal website "foundations of faith")
I just want people to know exactly the kinds of people that we are putting into power, and as well, I am deeply concerned about the co-opting of our conservatives by the religious right à la the USA.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
