Troubleshooting Am I being an idiot?
Hello everyone,
I'm trying to help a family member set up their internet. The internet provider has confirmed the connection is on. I assumed the NBN box would have something to plug the CAT5e cable into but I haven't seen it, so I've plugged it into the wall. The internet still isn't working.
I have the distinct sense I'm being an idiot and missing something obvious. Any advice?

Take the cover off the NBNCo NTD (right hand side). It should come off with a pull from the bottom. Then you'll see your RJ45 connections to plug a router into.

The cover of the NBN box pops off and you plug the ethernet cord into usually the 1st plug which is on the underside of the box

The NBN box is the big 2nd box from the left with the plain white panel on the front (which pops off)

The first Data port, there will be two Voice ports before it. The RSP would normally activate on Uni-D1, but if it doesnt light up go for D2-4.

As others have said NDT cover comes off think it’s two clips to press in not too hard to work out

yehhh abit.
see the the nbn battery, see how the cable goes into the underside of other nbn box. thats where all the ports are! hiding on the underside mocking you, the nbn ntd has a cover that pops off to make it easier to deal with.

There is a NBN modem in the plastic shroud, i think the device with on the left is a emergency monitoring/battery unit. When you plug the router in it will need to be in the correct ethernet port as they are all individual service ports, if you have any issues can call your ISP to confirm which one as there could still be an old active service if you just moved in. Also make sure the unit you are plugging in is a router not a modem

Well yes. But to add to that, probably try connecting Your router directly into the nbn box before you go testing wall sockets. The cat cable currently coming out of the nbn box and into the wall is the first port to try plugging into. If that doesn't work try each of them one by one. If you find that the ISP has made one of the other ports the live port, then you can plug the wall cat into that port and connect your router to one of the wall sockets.
Personally I think the right way to do it would be
- connect router directly to nbn box
- connect router output into that wall plug
- connect devices into wall sockets (assuming you want multiple devices hard wired) and also assuming there's a splitter between the wall input and that output nearby+others.
If they only want one device hard wired you can skip the wall sockets and just directly link nbn-router-computer. Or just use wireless when you have the router plugged into the right port on the nbn box.
FYI if you don't want to keep replacing the battery in the back-up, it works perfectly fine without a battery in it.

A little. You have to pop the cover off the NBN box to find the ports. Then use the right one to connect that to your router there, and you should be up and running.

As mentioned, take the cover of the large square box (pull out from the bottom)
Find the UNI-D1 port, connect an ethernet cable > WAN port (red to blue port) on router

Grey box there has NBN on it has the cover come off revealing the device you connect two. Two plastic retention things down the bottom.
Internet provider would say which port to connect to unid 1,2,3 or 4. Cable from there to WAN on your router.

Yes you are. Could have just googled? The only thing Google won't tell you, or us, is which port to plug it into. Usually it is the first, but ISPs can choose a different port.

Do their own investigation. That's heresy. Much easier to post online and prove they failed kindergarten. The scary thing is that this is apparently the competent person who knows how to do things.

Also, upgrade that CAT5e to CAT6. You are limited to 1gb speeds on CAT5e while CAT6 is maxed to 10gb speeds.

Cat5e can do 10gig over a few meters, also cat6 is technically only rated for 10gig up to 55m, if you want 10gig over the full 100m you would need cat6a

Never knew CAT5e can do more than 1gb at any length. Though if you're running more than 55m of cable domestically I keen to know why 🤣 that's a huge run 🤣

The NBN box opens and has a device inside that you can plug your ethernet cable into
