I feel like it looked better a minute in and just got worse after that

Way too heavy on the already unnecessary outline.

u/wild_cherry1987 4d ago
wrong color. needed more like dark brown , not black outline.

Reminded me of the Bob Ross stream on twitch. Every time he made a big change like adding a tree in the middle of the painting, twitch chat would spam RUINED!! Then eventually the tree would look like a great addition and chat would spam SAVED.
I saw the RUINED chat in my mind watching this. There was no SAVED :(

I thought that too until the end, and I can clearly say it’s better in the end. The outline helps taking away the washed look at just before 1 minute in.

To be fair, it was dumb the whole time. It’s a tiny hatchet for no good reason 🤷🏻♂️

u/AreaBackground 4d ago
The bottom of the ax outline is uneven and really made this unsatisfying

u/wild_cherry1987 4d ago
the machine it's used here is not embroidery machine. it's a simple sewing machine that has embroidery funtion. embroidery machine is automatic and you don't have to do anything just change thread color. It's much much harder to work with such a machine like shown here..
39
u/PatHeist 4d ago
This is a manual embroidery machine, not a computer controlled one. Manual embroidery machines have one pedal for speed and another one for width.

u/AreaBackground 4d ago
Doesn’t make it less unsatisfying
1
u/wild_cherry1987 4d ago
It's simply manual and every mistake shows immediately..especially with such a contrasting thread

u/Chief2091 4d ago
I can eat with toothpicks as chopsticks, but why would I?
9
u/ctrl-alt-etc 4d ago
Because in this metaphor chopsticks cost $1,000.
3
u/Coolegespam 4d ago
I mean, a good sowing machine with embroidery capabilities like this aint much cheaper.
2
u/Toolikethelightning 4d ago
Do you think they’re just using a really tight zigzag stitch?
2
u/wild_cherry1987 4d ago
There are embroidery machines that do this manual job, this could be one of those, but most are hybrids of normal sewing and embroidery

u/Yars4n 4d ago
Even lines aren't an indicator of good line art and a variation in line weight looks better and is encouraged
4
u/AreaBackground 4d ago
It’s not about the weight it’s about the weird notch and poor execution of the bottom black outline

My dad used to have an embroidery/screen printing business. I always loved watching his gigantic machine just go to work.
Unfortunately he got too sick and couldn’t keep up anymore, so he eventually got rid of it. But I have some really good memories just sitting next to him for hours watching him work.
1
u/StomachPlenty2155 2h ago
was the machine called Meistergram?
1
u/treshort 1h ago
Goodness I have no idea. Was quite a long time ago. I’ll describe to the best of my memory it if that helps.
All the spools of thread were up above, I believe to the right? The screen to program at eye level on the same side, but up front so he could program/tell it what to do. The screen printing doohickey was to the left. I don’t remember if that was a piece of the unit itself, or if it was its own thing but the unit had a spot for one to sit. I remember the whole thing being gray and navy.

I like to keep mine razor sharp. Sharp enough you can shave with it. Why I've been known to circumcise a gnat.

God I hate the feeling of embroidered decals like this. Especially when they put them on shirts.
48
64
u/Rapunzel10 4d ago
That's because they usually use cheap synthetic thread, makes it stiff and scratchy. If they use nice cotton or silk it's fine but the only time you see that anymore is on luxury items. Even then most luxury stuff uses the cheap thread. I have an old scarf from before the depression that has beautiful embroidery that is softer than most fabric. So much of the fabric industry is worse quality than it was 100 years ago
21
u/wild_cherry1987 4d ago
polyester thread is very silky. what's scratching is mostly not right stabilizer (backing). You can't embroider without stabilizer.
19
u/Rapunzel10 4d ago
You can't embroider without stabilizer.
Well that's not true. I do it all the time. The scarf I have doesn't have any backing, that's part of why it's so soft. It's not the correct choice for every fabric but it can be done
But you are right that the right stabilizer will offer support without being so scratchy. The cheaper backing is certainly part of the issue

u/wild_cherry1987 4d ago
Depends how many stitches youre putting there. If it's not concentrated ornament it's possible.
But scarf has other problems - stitches sinking in, then you need dissolving in water stabilisers ON top of the scarf to keep stitches afloat, same as embroidery on towels.

u/stikky 4d ago
I never thought much of it before but I can see why people might enjoy embroidery. With a machine, putting your designs on clothes could be quite fun.
5
u/123knaeckebrot 3d ago
Every time I see one of these I get little step closer to buying an embroidering machine. And I don’t even know what I would use it for
4
u/xGhostBoyx 3d ago
It's really fun to do by hand as well, especially for smaller designs. For it does take forever for larger designs, but if you just want to do something small on the pocket of a shirt or something it doesn't take too long.
1
u/stoppeeingonthefloor 3d ago
The machine would be fun to use even with my arthritic hands that normally keep me away from fine motor/hand hobbies like this. I love that kind of stuff but usually avoid it because it hurts my hands too badly.

Am I missing the cuts (I think I see one when they changed from red to silver) when they changed thread color?

I like the part where it finishes and IMEDIATLY starts over. I didn’t want to see the finished product.

The lines were uneven and it looked better before the black outlines. This made me feel more anxious than satisfied.

Hmmmm I was going to say "tiny axe? you mean a hatchet?" but then the blade was red. If the blade is red, it's an axe obviously.

How does it switch thread color so seamlessly
5
u/Kind_Ordinary9573 4d ago
This was my question. When I’m sewing, it’s at least a 3-minute process.

u/Original-Character57 4d ago
Pulls out the black thread and shits all over their good work.
Definitely a case here where less is more.

Does anyone know the exact machine model please 🥺🙏🏾
1
u/510Goodhands 4d ago
No but just look up manual embroidery machine.
For those who don’t know, there are two petals under the machine. When is for speed, and then there’s a knee control for the width of the stitch. As how they can make the stitching change from narrow to wide as they are sewing, and the operator is using two hands to control the embroidery hoop.

This thread is fascinating
Just barely learned how to use a sewing machine and I've never done anything like that before. Making a whole axe like this seems so fun and magical to me.
Then I read the comments and find out that apparently, this is not good? Never woulda guessed 😂
I'm sure you guys are right - there's probably far better ways to do this. But as a total amateur, I still love it

Everyone complaining about uneven lines probably can’t even thread a needle.

u/Sesudesu 4d ago
The lines are bad, and I am well practiced with a sewing machine. Not that it matters, the lines are bad no matter what my personal experience level is.
3
u/TwistedMemories 4d ago
There’s still a white speck in the red near the top of the axe. That would drive my OCD and ADHD crazy.

Some people use crayons to color. This person? Death by tiny speed needle used to color.

I read a book as a kid where the FeMC was really good at embroidery so she just embroidered everything and she very consistently made strange choices i .e. embroidering wicker baskets on the hem of her skirts. This is her now.

How does this machine switch colors that fast? Is it some complex system, does it have multiple needles one for each color or am i just missing the cuts in the video where they swap colors?

I’ve seen sewing machines where you download image software and it basically “embroiders” the image for you. Minimal intervention. Is this that kind of embroidery? Software enabled?

How does it switch between the side to side stitch to a straight stitch? Is it dependent on the pressure applied to a foot pedal?

Why can’t we get tattoo machines to do this? Knock out a whole sleeve in 20mins. “That’ll be 10k.. Next!”

I love watching these kinds of videos, but don't know much about it. Do you have to switch out the thread every time you change colos, or is it like a 3d printer with multiple colors locked and loaded ready to go?

Everyone is talking about the outline, but what made me anxious is how fast the machine is going in a small area. And jealously at how this person can get their machine to operate so smoothly. Mine constantly snags.

Really impressive they used hand but automated machines are fairly cheap these days, especially if you can pick up a decent shape Tajima.
1
u/LottaLegs 4d ago
But doing it by hand is why it's here?
3
u/ThetaGrim 4d ago
Watching an automated machine doing it is satisfying, I found the free hand not as much given it was inconsistent in places.

All these nonsense about how it got worsen. Bet you guys can’t even draw a recognisable axe with pen and paper. The sewer is embroidering a 3D axe and I for one think it’s so well done.

The outlines make it go from looking like an axe to looking like a cartoon axe
