Whatever Gaben said with piracy and good service. I think we're at the beginning of a good era for piracy and emulation, and maybe at some point Sony and the likes will take their head out of their collective asses and listen to the people who are actually making them money. It's not that we don't want to pay 70-90€ for a game, it's that we want to be sure that we own it. The day they make a console with an actual ownership system and right-to-repair implemention, I'll be standing in line to get one.
THAT is the wildest part for me. They SAW we were VERY CLEARLY still paying those bullshit insane prices for games and they STILL wanted to dip their hand into the cookie jar for more. That extra bit of greed finally broke the camel's back. Like if they'd just kept fucking off on the old route they would still probably have a good run of it. Though let's be real, it was only a matter of time with AI being out there.
Exactly. The situation was not good, as other said (prices, DRM etc), but at least there was a kind of stability. Now They wanted to wring even more money out of their customers, and turns out the tools they use against us are being turned against them.
Of course I agree. Cheaper would be better... But with the late-stage capitalistic society we live in, price trend is upwards, not downwards. It's just that the surrounding environment has changed too, with the act of spending money not being necessarily tied to a perpetual license anymore.
I just bought Pokemon yellow for $60 and Mario Kart Double Dash for $80. At least when I did that, I got games that I already know are good and are supported small, local businesses doing so.
In other words, If places like Sony and decide they want me to pay $90 for a game, I think they'll quickly find out that I'm not going to give them any money at all. There's other games I can spend that much money or less on with equal satisfaction.
I don't need elder scrolls six. I'm still enjoying 5. Fuck off, Microsoft
I have the same thinking for the prices of current-gen hardware. I'm not too attracted by AAA-games and my current build is "good enough", so basically if my PC can't run it, I don't play it. It's a luxury and one of the few leverages we have in our position.
Everything to do with the Nintendo switch 2 when it was released made me go to used game shop, get a wii, and start buying games I liked from when I was growing up. I had forgotten how much I love Sonic heroes, and I got that. Plus a half dozen other games and controllers and I still haven't spent as much as one game and one switch 2 would have cost me
No, not that. I expect my games to be full and completed regardless of price, if I'm paying for it.
I meant what I said and nothing else, there are no additional exceptions. I'm not paying that much for a game unless the additional cost is going straight to the devs wages
Yeah reasonable comment, I really meant if someone is charging AAA prices then it should be a AAA game. Although I don't mind paying for early access stuff if they're quite upfront about the state of the game and reviews line up with this and it's a small studio.
Paralives is the most recent example I can think of of this. They said it was early build and that the life mode stuff is still bare bones. They've been slow on the updates but what they were selling as the early access game is what they said was there.
Hell, if we're going full digital, where's my discount now that they don't have to worry about overhead from dealing with physical media. I mean, if I go buy a game for $80 in-store, I know the store and the distributors are getting a slice. So... Why am I paying the same digital price now that you don't have any retailers to keep happy by keeping parity?
Keep in mind, PC gaming functions on the same licensing model that PSN games do. You can lose your Steam account and CAN lose your entire library in certain cases. Valve seems much less inclined to actually pull the trigger on it and defaults to an online play ban (which I think is entirely fair) that lets you play your single player games, but it's still a gut punch that it can happen at all.
That said... The difference between a license and ownership has some issues that people aren't considering might be a problem that needs to be addressed, ultimately.
Now we just need components that actually run those games or reduce the demands of the games so much they become playable on lower spec.
I'm honestly expecting the pirate scene to start releasing decompiles of games that have all that fucking RTX PT 4K arse pimples garbage gone and run on a basic RTX 2060 at 60 FPS at 1080p
Exactly, the difference lies in the possibility. I don't pirate anymore because of the risk, I'm lucky enough to be able to pay for the games, and steam is a good enough store that I don't need to go somewhere else.
I think you missed the point. The claim was that people would happily pay 70-90€ if ownership came with it, and that the first console maker to offer that would win them over. Replying “but they don’t offer it” just restates the problem.
